John 5:1After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. After this there was a Festival of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
John 5:2Now in Jerusalem near the sheep-market there is a public bath which in Hebrew is named Beth-zatha. It has five doorways. Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, called in Hebrew `Bethesda.' It has five arcades.
John 5:3In these doorways there were a great number of people with different diseases: some unable to see, some without the power of walking, some with wasted bodies. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. In these there used to lie a great number of sick persons, and of people who were blind or lame or paralyzed.
John 5:4[]For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. []
John 5:5One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. And there was one man there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
John 5:6When Jesus saw him there on the floor it was clear to him that he had been now a long time in that condition, and so he said to the man, Is it your desire to get well? When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? Jesus saw him lying there, and knowing that he had been a long time in that condition, He asked him, "Do you wish to have health and strength?"
John 5:7The ill man said in answer, Sir, I have nobody to put me into the bath when the water is moving; and while I am on the way down some other person gets in before me.The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. "Sir," replied the sufferer, "I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is moved; but while I am coming some one else steps down before me."
John 5:8Jesus said to him, Get up, take your bed and go.Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. "Rise," said Jesus, "take up your mat and walk."
John 5:9And the man became well straight away, and took up his bed and went. Now that day was the Sabbath. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath. Instantly the man was restored to perfect health, and he took up his mat and began to walk.
John 5:10So the Jews said to the man who had been made well, It is the Sabbath; and it is against the law for you to take up your bed.The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed. That day was a Sabbath. So the Jews said to the man who had been cured, "It is the Sabbath: you must not carry your mat."
John 5:11He said to them, But he who made me well, said to me, Take up your bed and go.He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk. "He who cured me," he replied, "said to me, `Take up your mat and walk.'"
John 5:12Then they put to him the question: Who is the man who said to you, Take it up and go?Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk? "Who is it," they asked, "that said to you, `Take up your mat and walk'?"
John 5:13Now he who had been made well had no knowledge who it was, Jesus having gone away because of the number of people who were in that place. And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place. But the man who had been cured did not know who it was; for Jesus had passed out unnoticed, there being a crowd in the place.
John 5:14After a time Jesus came across him in the Temple and said to him, See, you are well and strong; do no more sin for fear a worse thing comes to you.Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee. Afterwards Jesus found him in the Temple and said to him, "You are now restored to health. Do not sin any more, or a worse thing may befall you."
John 5:15The man went away and said to the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole. The man went and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had restored him to health;
John 5:16And for this reason the Jews were turned against Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day. and on this account the Jews began to persecute Jesus because He did these things on the Sabbath.
John 5:17But his answer was: My Father is still working even now, and so I am working. But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. His reply to their accusation was, "My Father works unceasingly, and so do I."
John 5:18For this cause the Jews had an even greater desire to put Jesus to death, because not only did he not keep the Sabbath but he said God was his Father, so making himself equal with God.Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God. On this account then the Jews were all the more eager to put Him to death because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also spoke of God as being in a special sense His Father, thus putting Himself on a level with God.
John 5:19So Jesus made answer and said, Truly I say to you, The Son is not able to do anything himself; he is able to do only what he sees the Father doing; whatever the Father does the Son does it in the same way. Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. "In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that the Son can do nothing of Himself He can only do what He sees the Father doing; for whatever He does, that the Son does in like manner.
John 5:20For the Father has love for the Son and lets him see everything which he does: and he will let him see greater works than these so that you may be full of wonder. For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel. For the Father loves the Son and reveals to Him all that He Himself is doing. And greater deeds than these will He reveal to Him, in order that you may wonder.
John 5:21In the same way, as the Father gives life to the dead, even so the Son gives life to those to whom he is pleased to give it.For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will. For just as the Father awakens the dead and gives them life, so the Son also gives life to whom He wills.
John 5:22The Father is not the judge of men, but he has given all decisions into the hands of the Son;For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: The Father indeed does not judge any one, but He has entrusted all judgement to the Son,
John 5:23So that all men may give honour to the Son even as they give honour to the Father. He who gives no honour to the Son gives no honour to the Father who sent him. That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him. that all may honour the Son even as they honour the Father. The man who withholds honour from the Son withholds honour from the Father who sent Him.
John 5:24Truly I say to you, The man whose ears are open to my word and who has faith in him who sent me, has eternal life; he will not be judged, but has come from death into life.Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. "In most solemn truth I tell you that he who listens to my teaching and believes Him who sent me, has the Life of the Ages, and does not come under judgement, but has passed over out of death into Life.
John 5:25Truly I say to you, The time is coming, it has even now come, when the voice of the Son of God will come to the ears of the dead, and those hearing it will have life.Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. "In most solemn truth I tell you that a time is coming nay, has already come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear it will live.
John 5:26For even as the Father has life in himself, so he has given to the Son to have life in himself. For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He has also given to the Son to have life in Himself.
John 5:27And he has given him authority to be judge because he is the Son of man.And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. And He has conferred on Him authority to act as Judge, because He is the Son of Man.
John 5:28Do not be surprised at this: for the time is coming when his voice will come to all who are in the place of the dead,Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, Wonder not at this. For a time is coming when all who are in the graves will hear His voice and will come forth
John 5:29And they will come out; those who have done good, into the new life; and those who have done evil, to be judged. And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. they who have done what is right to the resurrection of Life, and they whose actions have been evil to the resurrection of judgement.
John 5:30Of myself I am unable to do anything: as the voice comes to me so I give a decision: and my decision is right because I have no desire to do what is pleasing to myself, but only what is pleasing to him who sent me.I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me. "I can of my own self do nothing. As I am bidden, so I judge; and mine is a just judgement, because it is not my own will that guides me, but the will of Him who sent me.
John 5:31If I gave witness about myself, my witness would not be true.If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. "If I give testimony concerning myself, my testimony cannot be accepted.
John 5:32There is another who gives witness about me and I am certain that the witness he gives about me is true. There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. There is Another who gives testimony concerning me, and I know that the testimony is true which He offers concerning me.
John 5:33You sent to John and he gave true witness.Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth. "You sent to John, and he both was and still is a witness to the truth.
John 5:34But I have no need of a man's witness: I only say these things so that you may have salvation. But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved. But the testimony on my behalf which I accept is not from man; though I say all this in order that you may be saved.
John 5:35He was a burning and shining light, and for a time you were ready to be happy in his light. He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. He was the lamp that burned and shone, and for a time you were willing to be gladdened by his light.
John 5:36But the witness which I have is greater than that of John: the work which the Father has given me to do, the very work which I am now doing, is a witness that the Father has sent me.But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. "But the testimony which I have is weightier than that of John; for the work the Father has assigned to me for me to bring it to completion the very work which I am doing affords testimony concerning me that the Father has sent me.
John 5:37And the Father himself who sent me has given witness about me. Not one of you has ever given ear to his voice; his form you have not seen. And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. And the Father who sent me, *He* has given testimony concerning me. None of you have ever either heard His voice or seen what He is like.
John 5:38And you have not kept his word in your hearts, because you have not faith in him whom he has sent. And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. Nor have you His word dwelling within you, for you refuse to believe Him whom *He* has sent.
John 5:39You make search in the holy Writings, in the belief that through them you get eternal life; and it is those Writings which give witness about me.Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. "You search the Scriptures, because you suppose that in them you will find the Life of the Ages; and it is those Scriptures that yield testimony concerning me;
John 5:40And still you have no desire to come to me so that you may have life. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. and yet you are unwilling to come to me that you may have Life.
John 5:41I do not take honour from men;I receive not honour from men. "I do not accept glory from man,
John 5:42But I have knowledge of you that you have no love for God in your hearts. But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. but I know you well, and I know that in your hearts you do not really love God.
John 5:43I have come in my Father's name, and your hearts are not open to me. If another comes with no other authority but himself, you will give him your approval.I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. I have come as my Father's representative, and you do not receive me. If some one else comes representing only himself, him you will receive.
John 5:44How is it possible for you to have faith while you take honour one from another and have no desire for the honour which comes from the only God?How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only? How is it possible for you to believe, while you receive glory from one another and have no desire for the glory that comes from the only God?
John 5:45Put out of your minds the thought that I will say things against you to the Father: the one who says things against you is Moses, on whom you put your hopes.Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. "Do not suppose that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you, namely Moses, on whom your hope rests.
John 5:46If you had belief in Moses you would have belief in me; for his writings are about me.For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. For if you believe Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote about me.
John 5:47If you have no belief in his writings, how will you have belief in my words? But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words? But if you disbelieve his writings, how are you to believe my words?"
