Matthew 3:1And in those days John the Baptist came preaching in the waste land of Judaea,In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, About this time John the Baptist made his appearance, preaching in the Desert of Judaea.
Matthew 3:2Saying, Let your hearts be turned from sin; for the kingdom of heaven is near.And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. "Repent," he said, "for the Kingdom of the Heavens is now close at hand."
Matthew 3:3For this is he of whom Isaiah the prophet said, The voice of one crying in the waste land, Make ready the way of the Lord, make his roads straight.For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. He it is who was spoken of through the Prophet Isaiah when he said, "The voice of one crying aloud, `In the desert prepare ye a road for the Lord: make His highway straight.'"
Matthew 3:4Now John was clothed in camel's hair, with a leather band about him; and his food was locusts and honey.And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey. This man John wore a garment of camel's hair, and a loincloth of leather; and he lived upon locusts and wild honey.
Matthew 3:5Then Jerusalem and all Judaea went out to him, and all the people from near Jordan;Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, Then large numbers of people went out to him people from Jerusalem and from all Judaea, and from the whole of the Jordan valley
Matthew 3:6And they were given baptism by him in the river Jordan, saying openly that they had done wrong.And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins. and were baptized by him in the Jordan, making full confession of their sins.
Matthew 3:7But when he saw a number of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, Offspring of snakes, at whose word are you going in flight from the wrath to come?But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he exclaimed, "O vipers' brood, who has warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
Matthew 3:8Let your change of heart be seen in your works:Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: Therefore let your lives prove your change of heart;
Matthew 3:9And say not to yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; because I say to you that God is able from these stones to make children for Abraham.And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. and do not imagine that you can say to yourselves, `We have Abraham as our forefather,' for I tell you that God can raise up descendants for Abraham from these stones.
Matthew 3:10And even now the axe is put to the root of the trees; every tree then which does not give good fruit is cut down, and put into the fire.And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. And already the axe is lying at the root of the trees, so that every tree which does not produce good fruit will quickly be hewn down and thrown into the fire.
Matthew 3:11Truly, I give baptism with water to those of you whose hearts are changed; but he who comes after me is greater than I, whose shoes I am not good enough to take up: he will give you baptism with the Holy Spirit and with fire:I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: I indeed am baptizing you in water on a profession of repentance; but He who is coming after me is mightier than I: His sandals I am not worthy to carry for a moment; He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire.
Matthew 3:12In whose hand is the instrument with which he will make clean his grain; he will put the good grain in his store, but the waste will be burned up in the fire which will never be put out.Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. His winnowing-shovel is in His hand, and He will make a thorough clearance of His threshing-floor, gathering His wheat into the storehouse, but burning up the chaff in unquenchable fire."
Matthew 3:13Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be given baptism by him.Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. Just at that time Jesus, coming from Galilee to the Jordan, presents Himself to John to be baptized by him.
Matthew 3:14But John would have kept him back, saying, It is I who have need of baptism from you, and do you come to me?But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? John protested. "It is I," he said, "who have need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?"
Matthew 3:15But Jesus made answer, saying to him, Let it be so now: because so it is right for us to make righteousness complete. Then he gave him baptism.And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. "Let it be so on this occasion," Jesus replied; "for so we ought to fulfil every religious duty." Then he consented;
Matthew 3:16And Jesus, having been given baptism, straight away went up from the water; and, the heavens opening, he saw the Spirit of God coming down on him as a dove;And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: and Jesus was baptized, and immediately went up from the water. At that moment the heavens opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him,
Matthew 3:17And a voice came out of heaven, saying, This is my dearly loved Son, with whom I am well pleased.And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. while a voice came from Heaven, saying, "This is My Son, the dearly loved, in whom is My delight."
