Matthew 23:4They make hard laws and put great weights on men's backs; but they themselves will not put a finger to them.For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. for they bind together burdens heavy and grievous to be borne, and lay upon the shoulders of men, but with their finger they will not move them.
Matthew 23:5But all their works they do so as to be seen by men: for they make wide their phylacteries, and the edges of their robes,But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, `And all their works they do to be seen by men, and they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the fringes of their garments,
Matthew 23:6And the things desired by them are the first places at feasts, and the chief seats in the Synagogues,And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, they love also the chief couches in the supper, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
Matthew 23:7And words of respect in the market-places, and to be named by men, Teacher.And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. and the salutations in the market-places, and to be called by men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
Matthew 23:8But you may not be named Teacher: for one is your teacher, and you are all brothers.But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. `And ye ye may not be called Rabbi, for one is your director the Christ, and all ye are brethren;
Matthew 23:9And give no man the name of father on earth: because one is your Father, who is in heaven.And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. and ye may not call [any] your father on the earth, for one is your Father, who is in the heavens,
Matthew 23:10And you may not be named guides: because one is your Guide, even Christ.Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. nor may ye be called directors, for one is your director the Christ.
Matthew 23:11But let the greatest among you be your servant.But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. And the greater of you shall be your ministrant,
Matthew 23:12And whoever makes himself high will be made low, and whoever makes himself low will be made high.And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. and whoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled, and whoever shall humble himself shall be exalted.
Matthew 23:13But a curse is on you, scribes and Pharisees, false ones! because you are shutting the kingdom of heaven against men: for you do not go in yourselves, and those who are going in, you keep back.But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. `Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut up the reign of the heavens before men, for ye do not go in, nor those going in do ye suffer to enter.
Matthew 23:14[]Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. `Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye eat up the houses of the widows, and for a pretence make long prayers, because of this ye shall receive more abundant judgment.
Matthew 23:15A curse is on you, scribes and Pharisees, false ones! for you go about land and sea to get one disciple and, having him, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. `Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye go round the sea and the dry land to make one proselyte, and whenever it may happen ye make him a son of gehenna twofold more than yourselves.
Matthew 23:16A curse is on you, blind guides, who say, Whoever takes an oath by the Temple, it is nothing; but whoever takes an oath by the gold of the Temple, he is responsible.Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! `Wo to you, blind guides, who are saying, Whoever may swear by the sanctuary, it is nothing, but whoever may swear by the gold of the sanctuary is debtor!
Matthew 23:17You foolish ones and blind: which is greater, the gold, or the Temple which makes the gold holy?Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? Fools and blind! for which [is] greater, the gold, or the sanctuary that is sanctifying the gold?
Matthew 23:18And, Whoever takes an oath by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever takes an oath by the offering which is on it, he is responsible.And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty. `And, whoever may swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever may swear by the gift that is upon it is debtor!
Matthew 23:19You blind ones: which is greater, the offering, or the altar which makes the offering holy?Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? Fools and blind! for which [is] greater, the gift, or the altar that is sanctifying the gift?
Matthew 23:20He, then, who takes an oath by the altar, takes it by the altar and by all things on it.Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon. `He therefore who did swear by the altar, doth swear by it, and by all things on it;
Matthew 23:21And he who takes an oath by the Temple, takes it by the Temple and by him whose house it is.And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein. and he who did swear by the sanctuary, doth swear by it, and by Him who is dwelling in it;

Matthew 23:23A curse is on you, scribes and Pharisees, false ones! for you make men give a tenth of all sorts of sweet-smelling plants, but you give no thought to the more important things of the law, righteousness, and mercy, and faith; but it is right for you to do these, and not to let the others be undone.Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. `Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye give tithe of the mint, and the dill, and the cumin, and did neglect the weightier things of the Law the judgment, and the kindness, and the faith; these it behoved [you] to do, and those not to neglect.

Matthew 23:26You blind Pharisee, first make clean the inside of the cup and of the plate, so that the outside may become equally clean.Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. `Blind Pharisee! cleanse first the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside of them also may become clean.
Matthew 23:27A curse is on you, scribes and Pharisees, false ones! for you are like the resting-places of the dead, which are made white, and seem beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men's bones and of all unclean things.Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. `Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye are like to whitewashed sepulchres, which outwardly indeed do appear beautiful, and within are full of bones of dead men, and of all uncleanness;
Matthew 23:28Even so you seem to men to be full of righteousness, but inside you are all false and full of wrongdoing.Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. so also ye outwardly indeed do appear to men righteous, and within ye are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
Matthew 23:29A curse is on you, scribes and Pharisees, false ones! because you put up buildings for housing the dead bodies of the prophets, and make fair the last resting-places of good men, and say,Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous, `Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and adorn the tombs of the righteous,
Matthew 23:30If we had been living in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in the blood of the prophets.And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
Matthew 23:31So that you are witnesses against yourselves that you are the sons of those who put the prophets to death.Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets. So that ye testify to yourselves, that ye are sons of them who did murder the prophets;
Matthew 23:32Make full, then, the measure of your fathers.Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. and ye ye fill up the measure of your fathers.
Matthew 23:33You snakes, offspring of snakes, how will you be kept from the punishment of hell?Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? `Serpents! brood of vipers! how may ye escape from the judgment of the gehenna?
Matthew 23:34For this reason, I send you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: some of them you will put to death and put on the cross, and to some of them you will give blows in your Synagogues, driving them from town to town;Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city: `Because of this, lo, I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes, and of them ye will kill and crucify, and of them ye will scourge in your synagogues, and will pursue from city to city;
Matthew 23:35So that on you may come all the blood of the upright on the earth, from the blood of upright Abel to the blood of Zachariah, son of Barachiah, whom you put to death between the Temple and the altar.That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. that on you may come all the righteous blood being poured out on the earth from the blood of Abel the righteous, unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the sanctuary and the altar:
Matthew 23:36Truly I say to you, All these things will come on this generation.Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation. verily I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation.
Matthew 23:37O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, putting to death the prophets, and stoning those who are sent to her! Again and again would I have taken your children to myself as a bird takes her young ones under her wings, and you would not!O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! `Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that art killing the prophets, and stoning those sent unto thee, how often did I will to gather thy children together, as a hen doth gather her own chickens under the wings, and ye did not will.
Matthew 23:38See, your house is made waste.Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. Lo, left desolate to you is your house;
Matthew 23:39For I say to you, You will not see me from this time till you say, A blessing on him who comes in the name of the Lord.For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. for I say to you, ye may not see me henceforth, till ye may say, Blessed [is] he who is coming in the name of the Lord.`
