Genesis 39:1Now Joseph was taken down to Egypt; and Potiphar the Egyptian, a captain of high position in Pharaoh's house, got him for a price from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there. And Joseph was brought down to Egypt: and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmaelites, who had brought him down thither. And Joseph was brought into Egypt, and Putiphar an eunuch of Pharao, chief captain of the army, an Egyptian, bought him of the Ismaelites, by whom he was brought.
Genesis 39:2And the Lord was with Joseph, and he did well; and he was living in the house of his master the Egyptian. And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man: and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. And the Lord was with him, and he was a prosperous man in all things: and he dwelt in his master's house,
Genesis 39:3And his master saw that the Lord was with him, making everything he did go well. And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand.Who knew very well that the Lord was with him, and made all that he did to prosper in his hand.
Genesis 39:4And having a high opinion of Joseph as his servant, he made him the overseer of his house and gave him control over all he had.And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand. And Joseph found favour in the sight of his master, and ministered to him: and being set over all by him, he governed the house committed to him, and all things that were delivered to him:
Genesis 39:5And from the time when he made him overseer and gave him control of all his property, the blessing of the Lord was with the Egyptian, because of Joseph; the blessing of the Lord was on all he had, in the house and in the field. And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake: and the blessing of the LORD was on all that he had in the house, and in the field. And the Lord blessed the house of the Egyptian for Joseph's sake, and multiplied all his substance, both at home, and in the fields.
Genesis 39:6And he gave Joseph control of all his property, keeping no account of anything, but only the food which was put before him. Now Joseph was very beautiful in form and face. And he left all that he had in Joseph's hand; and he knew not aught he had, save the bread which he ate; and Joseph was a goodly person, and well favored.h And after many days his mistress 'cast her eyes on Joseph, and said: Lie with me.
Genesis 39:7And after a time, his master's wife, looking on Joseph with desire, said to him, Be my lover. And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph: and she said, Lie with me.But he, in no wise consenting to that wicked act, said to her: Behold, my master hath delivered all things to me, and knoweth not what he hath in his own house:
Genesis 39:8But he would not, and said to her, You see that my master keeps no account of what I do in his house, and has put all his property in my control; But he refused, and said to his master's wife, Behold, my master knoweth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand:Neither knew he any other thing, but the bread which he ate. And Joseph was of a beautiful countenance, and comely to behold.
Genesis 39:9So that no one has more authority in this house than I have; he has kept nothing back from me but you, because you are his wife; how then may I do this great wrong, sinning against God?There is none greater in his house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?Neither is there any thing which is hot in my power, or that he hath not delivered to me, but thee, who art his wife : how then can I do this wicked thing, and I sin against my God?
Genesis 39:10And day after day she went on requesting Joseph to come to her and be her lover, but he would not give ear to her.And it came to pass, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not to her, to lie by her, or to be with her. With such words as these day by day, both the woman was importunate with the young man, and he refused the adultery.
Genesis 39:11Now one day he went into the house to do his work; and not one of the men of the house was inside. And it came to pass, about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within. Now it happened on it certain day, that Joseph went into the house, and was doing some business without any, man with him:
Genesis 39:12And pulling at his coat, she said, Come to my bed; but slipping out of his coat, he went running away. And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and went out.And she catching the skirt of his garment, said: Lie with me. But he leaving the garment in her hand, fled, and went out.
Genesis 39:13And when she saw that he had got away, letting her keep his coat,And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and had fled forth,And when the woman saw the garment in her hands, and herself disregarded,
Genesis 39:14She sent for the men of her house and said to them, See, he has let a Hebrew come here and make sport of us; he came to my bed, and I gave a loud cry; That she called to the men of her house, and spoke to them, saying, See, he hath brought in a Hebrew to us to mock us: he came in to me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice:She called to her the men of her house, and said to them: See, he hath brought in a Hebrew, to abuse us: he came in to me, to lie with me : and when I cried out,
Genesis 39:15And hearing it he went running out without his coat. And it came to pass, when he heard that I raised my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and went out.And he heard my voice, he left the garment that I held, and got him out.
Genesis 39:16And she kept his coat by her, till his master came back. And she laid up his garment by her until his lord came home. For a proof therefore of her fidelity, she kept the garment, and shewed it to her husband when he returned home:
Genesis 39:17Then she gave him the same story, saying, The Hebrew servant whom you have taken into our house came in to make sport of me;And she spoke to him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought to us, came in to me to mock me.And said: The Hebrew servant, whom thou best brought, came to me to abuse me.
Genesis 39:18And when I gave a loud cry he went running out without his coat. And it came to pass, as I raised my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled. And when he heard me cry, he left the garment which I held, and fled out.
Genesis 39:19And hearing his wife's account of what his servant had done, he became very angry. And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that his wrath was kindled. His master hearing these things, and giving too much credit to his wife's words, was very angry.
Genesis 39:20And Joseph's master took him and put him in prison, in the place where the king's prisoners were kept in chains, and he was there in the prison-house.And Joseph's master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king's prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison. And cast Joseph into the prison, where the king's prisoners were kept, and he was there shut up.
Genesis 39:21But the Lord was with Joseph, and was good to him, and made the keeper of the prison his friend. But the LORD was with Joseph, and showed him mercy, and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. But the Lord was with Joseph and having mercy upon him gave him favour in the sight of the chief keeper of the prison:
Genesis 39:22And the keeper of the prison put all the prisoners under Joseph's control, and he was responsible for whatever was done there. And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatever they did there, was done by him.Who delivered into his hand all the prisoners that were kept in custody: and whatsoever was done was under him.
Genesis 39:23And the keeper of the prison gave no attention to anything which was under his care, because the Lord was with him; and the Lord made everything he did go well. The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the LORD was with him: and that which he did the LORD made it to prosper.Neither did he himself know any thing, having committed all things to him: for the Lord was with him, and made all that he did to prosper.
