Hebrews 7:1 | For this Melchizedek, the king of Salem, a priest of the Most High God, who gave Abraham his blessing, meeting him when he came back after putting the kings to death, | For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; | For this man, Melchizedek, King of Salem and priest of the Most High God he who when Abraham was returning after defeating the kings met him and pronounced a blessing on him |
Hebrews 7:2 | And to whom Abraham gave a tenth part of everything which he had, being first named King of righteousness, and then in addition, King of Salem, that is to say, King of peace; | To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; | to whom also Abraham presented a tenth part of all being first, as his name signifies, King of righteousness, and secondly King of Salem, that is, King of peace: |
Hebrews 7:3 | Being without father or mother, or family, having no birth or end to his life, being made like the Son of God, is a priest for ever. | Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like to the Son of God; abideth a priest continually. | with no father or mother, and no record of ancestry: having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made a type of the Son of God this man Melchizedek remains a priest for ever. |
Hebrews 7:4 | Now see how great this man was, to whom our father Abraham gave a tenth part of what he had got in the fight. | Now consider how great this man was, to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils. | Now think how great this priest-king must have been to whom Abraham the patriarch gave a tenth part of the best of the spoil. |
Hebrews 7:5 | And it is true that by the law, those of the sons of Levi who have the position of priests may take a tenth part of the people's goods; that is to say, they take it from their brothers though these are the sons of Abraham. | And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes from the people according to the law, that is, from their brethren, though they come from the loins of Abraham: | And those of the descendants of Levi who receive the priesthood are authorized by the Law to take tithes from the people, that is, from their brethren, though these have sprung from Abraham. |
Hebrews 7:6 | But this man, who was not of their family, took the tenth from Abraham, and gave a blessing to him to whom God had given his undertaking. | But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes from Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises. | But, in this instance, one who does not trace his origin from them takes tithes from Abraham, and pronounces a blessing on him to whom the promises belong. |
Hebrews 7:7 | But there is no doubt that the less gets his blessing from the greater. | And without all contradiction the less is blessed by the better. | And beyond all dispute it is always the inferior who is blessed by the superior. |
Hebrews 7:8 | Now at the present time, men over whom death has power take the tenth; but then it was taken by one of whom it is witnessed that he is living. | And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is testified that he liveth. | Moreover here frail mortal men receive tithes: there one receives them about whom there is evidence that he is alive. |
Hebrews 7:9 | And we may say that in Abraham, even Levi, who has a right to take the tenth part, gave it; | And as I may say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham. | And Levi too if I may so speak pays tithes through Abraham: |
Hebrews 7:10 | Because he was still in his father's body when Melchizedek came to him. | For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him. | for Levi was yet in the loins of his forefather when Melchizedek met Abraham. |
Hebrews 7:11 | Now if it was possible for things to be made complete through the priests of the house of Levi (for the law was given to the people in connection with them), what need was there for another priest who was of the order of Melchizedek and not of the order of Aaron? | If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron? | Now if the crowning blessing was attainable by means of the Levitical priesthood for as resting on this foundation the people received the Law, to which they are still subject what further need was there for a Priest of a different kind to be raised up belonging to the order of Melchizedek instead of being said to belong to the order of Aaron? |
Hebrews 7:12 | Because if the priests are changed, it is necessary to make a change in the law. | For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law. | For when the priesthood changes, a change of Law also of necessity takes place. |
Hebrews 7:13 | For he of whom these things are said comes of another tribe, of which no man has ever made offerings at the altar. | For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar. | He, however, to whom that prophecy refers is associated with a different tribe, not one member of which has anything to do with the altar. |
Hebrews 7:14 | Because it is clear that our Lord comes out of Judah, and Moses said nothing about priests from that tribe. | For it is evident that our Lord sprang from Judah; of which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning priesthood. | For it is undeniable that our Lord sprang from Judah, a tribe of which Moses said nothing in connection with priests. |
Hebrews 7:15 | And this is even more clear if a second priest has come up who is like Melchizedek, | And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest, | And this is still more abundantly clear when we read that it is as belonging to the order of Melchizedek that a priest of a different kind is to arise, |
Hebrews 7:16 | That is to say, not made by a law based on the flesh, but by the power of a life without end: | Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life. | and hold His office not in obedience to any temporary Law, but by virtue of an indestructible Life. |
Hebrews 7:17 | For it has been witnessed of him, You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. | For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. | For the words are in evidence, "Thou art a priest for ever, belonging to the order of Melchizedek." |
Hebrews 7:18 | So the law which went before is put on one side, because it was feeble and without profit. | For there is verily a disannulling of the preceding commandment on account of its weakness and unprofitableness. | On the one hand we have here the abrogation of an earlier code because it was weak and ineffective |
Hebrews 7:19 | (Because the law made nothing complete), and in its place there is a better hope, through which we come near to God. | For the law made nothing perfect, but the introduction of a better hope did; by which we draw nigh to God. | for the Law brought no perfect blessing but on the other hand we have the bringing in of a new and better hope by means of which we draw near to God. |
Hebrews 7:20 | And as this is not without the taking of an oath | And inasmuch as not without an oath he was made priest: | And since it was not without an oath being taken |
Hebrews 7:21 | (For those were made priests without an oath, but this one was made a priest with an oath by him who says of him, The Lord gave his oath, which he will not take back, that you are a priest for ever); | (For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath, by him that said to him, The Lord swore, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:) | for these men hold office without any oath having been taken, but He holds it attested by an oath from Him who said to Him, "The Lord has sworn and will not recall His words, Thou art a Priest for ever" |
Hebrews 7:22 | By so much is it a better agreement which we have through Jesus. | By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament. | so much the more also is the Covenant of which Jesus has become the guarantor, a better covenant. |
Hebrews 7:23 | And it is true that there have been a great number of those priests, because death does not let them go on for ever; | And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death: | And they have been appointed priests many in number, because death prevents their continuance in office: |
Hebrews 7:24 | But this priest, because his life goes on for ever, is unchanging. | But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. | but He, because He continues for ever, has a priesthood which does not pass to any successor. |
Hebrews 7:25 | So that he is fully able to be the saviour of all who come to God through him, because he is ever living to make prayer to God for them. | Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come to God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. | Hence too He is able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, seeing that He ever lives to plead for them. |
Hebrews 7:26 | It was right for us to have such a high priest, one who is holy and without evil, doing no wrong, having no part with sinners, and made higher than the heavens: | For such a high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; | Moreover we needed just such a High Priest as this holy, guileless, undefiled, far removed from sinful men and exalted above the heavens; |
Hebrews 7:27 | Who has no need to make offerings for sins every day, like those high priests, first for himself, and then for the people; because he did this once and for ever when he made an offering of himself. | Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself. | who, unlike other High Priests, is not under the necessity of offering up sacrifices day after day, first for His own sins, and afterwards for those of the people; for this latter thing He did once for all when He offered up Himself. |
Hebrews 7:28 | The law makes high priests of men who are feeble; but the word of the oath, which was made after the law, gives that position to a Son, in whom all good is for ever complete. | For the law maketh men high priests who have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was after the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore. | For the Law constitutes men High Priests men with all their infirmity but the utterance of the oath, which came later than the Law, constitutes High Priest a Son who has been made for ever perfect. |
