Luke 20:1 | And it came about on one of those days, when he was teaching the people in the Temple and preaching the good news, | And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he was teaching the people in the temple, and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him, with the elders, | On one of those days while He was teaching the people in the Temple and proclaiming the Good News, the High Priests came upon Him, and the Scribes, |
Luke 20:2 | That the chief priests and the scribes and the rulers of the people came to him and said, Make clear to us by what authority you do these things and who gave you this authority. | And spoke to him, saying, Tell us, By what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority? | together with the Elders, and they asked Him, "Tell us, By what authority are you doing these things? And who is it that gave you this authority?" |
Luke 20:3 | And in answer he said to them, I will put a question to you, and do you give me an answer: | And he answered and said to them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me: | "I also will put a question to you, "He said; |
Luke 20:4 | The baptism of John, was it from heaven or of men? | The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men? | "was John's baptism of Heavenly or of human origin?" |
Luke 20:5 | And they said among themselves, If we say, From heaven; he will say, Why did you not have faith in him? | And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not? | So they debated the matter with one another. "If we say `Heavenly,'" they argued, "he will say, `Why did you not believe him?' |
Luke 20:6 | But if we say, Of men; we will be stoned by the people, for they are certain that John was a prophet. | But if we say, From men; all the people will stone us: for they are persuaded that John was a prophet. | And if we say, `human,' the people will all stone us; for they are thoroughly convinced that John was a Prophet." |
Luke 20:7 | And they made answer that they had no idea where it came from. | And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was. | And they answered that they did not know the origin of it. |
Luke 20:8 | And Jesus said, And I will not make clear to you by what authority I do these things. | And Jesus said to them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things. | "Nor will I tell you," said Jesus, "by what authority I do these things." |
Luke 20:9 | And he gave the people this story: A man made a vine-garden and gave the use of it to some field-workers and went into another country for a long time. | Then he began to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time. | Then He proceeded to speak a parable to the people. "There was a man," He said, "who planted a vineyard, let it out to vine-dressers, and went abroad for a considerable time. |
Luke 20:10 | And at the right time he sent a servant to the workers to get part of the fruit from the vines; but the workmen gave him blows and sent him away with nothing. | And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty. | At vintage-time he sent a servant to the vine-dressers, for them to give him a share of the crop; but the vine-dressers beat him cruelly and sent him away empty-handed. |
Luke 20:11 | And he sent another servant, and they gave blows to him in the same way, and put shame on him, and sent him away with nothing. | And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty. | Then he sent a second servant; and him too they beat and ill treated and sent away empty-handed. |
Luke 20:12 | And he sent a third, and they gave him wounds and put him out. | And again he sent the third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out. | Then again he sent a third; and this one also they wounded and drove away. |
Luke 20:13 | And the lord of the garden said, What am I to do? I will send my dearly loved son; they may give respect to him. | Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be when they see him they will reverence him. | Then the owner of the vineyard said, "`What am I to do? I will send my son my dearly-loved son: they will probably respect him.' |
Luke 20:14 | But when the workmen saw him, they said to one another, This is he who will one day be the owner of the property: let us put him to death and the heritage will be ours. | But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. | "But when the vine-dressers saw him, they discussed the matter with one another, and said, "`This is the heir: let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.' |
Luke 20:15 | And driving him out of the garden they put him to death. Now what will the lord do to these workmen? | So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do to them? | "So they turned him out of the vineyard and murdered him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? |
Luke 20:16 | He will come and put them to destruction and give the garden to others. And when he said this, they said, May it not be so. | He will come and destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, may that never be. | He will come and put these vine-dressers to death, and give the vineyard to others." "God forbid!" exclaimed the hearers. |
Luke 20:17 | But he, looking on them, said, Is it not in the Writings, The stone which the builders put on one side, the same has become the chief stone of the building? | And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? | He looked at them and said, "What then does that mean which is written, "`The Stone which the builders rejected has been made the cornerstone'? |
Luke 20:18 | Everyone falling on that stone will be broken, but the man on whom the stone comes down will be crushed to dust. | Whoever shall fall upon that stone, shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. | Every one who falls on that stone will be severely hurt, but on whomsoever it falls, he will be utterly crushed." |
Luke 20:19 | And the chief priests and the scribes made attempts to get their hands on him in that very hour; and they were in fear of the people, for they saw that he had made up this story against them. | And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them. | At this the Scribes and the High Priests wanted to lay hands on Him, then and there; only they were afraid of the people. For they saw that in this parable He had referred to them. |
Luke 20:20 | And they kept watch on him, and sent out secret representatives, who were acting the part of good men, in order that they might get something from his words, on account of which they might give him up to the government and into the power of the ruler. | And they watched him, and sent forth spies, who should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him to the power and authority of the governor. | So, after impatiently watching their opportunity, they sent spies who were to act the part of good and honest men, that they might fasten on some expression of His, so as to hand Him over to the ruling power and the Governor's authority. |
Luke 20:21 | And they put a question to him, saying, Master, we are certain that your teaching and your words are right, and that you have no respect for a man's position, but you are teaching the true way of God: | And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly: | So they put a question to Him. "Rabbi," they said, "we know that you say and teach what is right and that you make no distinctions between one man and another, but teach God's way truly. |
Luke 20:22 | Is it right for us to make payment of taxes to Caesar or not? | Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Cesar, or not? | Is it allowable to pay a tax to Caesar, or not?" |
Luke 20:23 | But he saw through their trick and said to them, | But he perceived their craftiness, and said to them, Why tempt ye me? | But He saw through their knavery and replied, |
Luke 20:24 | Let me see a penny. Whose image and name are on it? And they said, Caesar's. | Show me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Cesar's. | "Show me a shilling; whose likeness and inscription does it bear?" "Caesar's," they said. |
Luke 20:25 | And he said, Then give to Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and to God the things which are God's. | And he said to them, Render therefore to Cesar the things which are Cesar's, and to God the things which are God's. | "Pay therefore," He replied, "what is Caesar's to Caesar and what is God's to God." |
Luke 20:26 | And they were not able to get anything from these words before the people: but they were full of wonder at his answer, and said nothing. | And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marveled at his answer, and held their peace. | There was nothing here that they could lay hold of before the people, and marvelling at His answer they said no more. |
Luke 20:27 | And some of the Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no coming back from the dead; and they said to him, | Then came to him certain of the Sadducees (who deny that there is any resurrection) and they asked him, | Next some of the Sadducees came forward (who deny that there is a Resurrection), and they asked Him, |
Luke 20:28 | Master, Moses said that if a man's brother comes to his end, having a wife, but no children, his brother is to take the wife, and get a family for his brother. | Saying, Master, Moses wrote to us, If any man's brother should die, having a wife, and he should die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed to his brother. | "Rabbi, Moses made it a law for us that if a man's brother should die, leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up a family for his brother. |
Luke 20:29 | Now there were seven brothers, and the first had a wife and came to his end, having no children; | There were therefore seven brothers: and the first took a wife, and died without children. | Now there were seven brothers. The first of them took a wife and died childless. |
Luke 20:30 | And the second; | And the second took her for a wife, and he died childless. | The second and the third also took her; |
Luke 20:31 | And the third took her; and in the same way, all the seven, without having any children, came to their end. | And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: And they left no children, and died. | and all seven, having done the same, left no children when they died. |
Luke 20:32 | And last of all, the woman came to her end. | Last of all the woman died also. | Finally the woman also died. |
Luke 20:33 | When they come back from the dead, whose wife will she be? for all the seven had her. | Therefore in the resurrection, whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife. | The woman, then at the Resurrection whose wife shall she be? for they all seven married her." |
Luke 20:34 | And Jesus said to them, The sons of this world are married and have wives; | And Jesus answering, said to them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage: | "The men of this age," replied Jesus, "marry, and the women are given in marriage. |
Luke 20:35 | But those to whom is given the reward of the world to come, and to come back from the dead, have no wives, and are not married; | But they who shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage. | But as for those who shall have been deemed worthy to find a place in that other age and in the Resurrection from among the dead, the men do not marry and the women are not given in marriage. |
Luke 20:36 | And death has no more power over them, for they are equal to the angels, and are sons of God, being of those who will come back from the dead. | Neither can they die any more: for they are equal to the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection. | For indeed they cannot die again; they are like angels, and are sons of God through being sons of the Resurrection. |
Luke 20:37 | But even Moses made it clear that the dead come back to life, saying, in the story of the burning thorn-tree, The Lord, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. | Now that the dead are raised, even Moses showed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. | But that the dead rise to life even Moses clearly implies in the passage about the Bush, where he calls the Lord `The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' |
Luke 20:38 | Now he is not the God of the dead but of the living: for all men are living to him. | For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live to him. | He is not a God of dead, but of living men, for to Him are all living." |
Luke 20:39 | And some of the scribes, in answer to this, said, Master, you have said well. | Then certain of the scribes answering, said, Master, thou hast well said. | Then some of the Scribes replied, "Rabbi, you have spoken well." |
Luke 20:40 | And they had fear of putting any more questions to him. | And after that, they durst not ask him any question at all. | From that time, however, no one ventured to challenge Him with a single question. |
Luke 20:41 | And he said to them, Why do they say that the Christ is the son of David? | And he said to them, How say they that Christ is David's son? | But He asked them, "How is it they say that the Christ is a son of David? |
Luke 20:42 | For David himself says in the book of Psalms, The Lord said to my Lord, Take your seat at my right hand, | And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, | Why, David himself says in the Book of Psalms, "`The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand |
Luke 20:43 | Till I put under your feet all those who are against you. | Till I make thy enemies thy footstool. | Until I have made thy foes a footstool under they feet.' |
Luke 20:44 | David then gives him the name of Lord, so how is it possible for him to be his son? | David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son? | "David himself therefore calls Him Lord, and how can He be his son?" |
Luke 20:45 | And in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples, | Then in the audience of all the people, he said to his disciples, | Then, in the hearing of all the people, He said to the disciples, |
Luke 20:46 | Keep away from the scribes, whose pleasure it is to go about in long robes, and to have words of respect said to them in the market-places, and to take the chief seats in the Synagogues and the first places at feasts; | Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts; | "Beware of the Scribes, who like to walk about in long robes, and love to be bowed to in places of public resort and to occupy the best seats in the synagogues or at a dinner party; |
Luke 20:47 | Who take the property of widows and before the eyes of men make long prayers; they will get a greater punishment. | Who devour widows' houses, and for a show make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation. | who swallow up the property of widows and mask their wickedness by making long prayers. They will be punished far more severely than others." |
