1st-Peter 4:1 | So that as Jesus was put to death in the flesh, do you yourselves be of the same mind; for the death of the flesh puts an end to sin; | Since, then, Christ has suffered in the flesh, you also must arm yourselves with a determination to do the same because he who has suffered in the flesh has done with sin | Christ, then, having suffered for us in [the] flesh, do *ye* also arm yourselves with the same mind; for he that has suffered in [the] flesh has done with sin, |
1st-Peter 4:2 | So that you may give the rest of your lives in the flesh, not to the desires of men, but to the purpose of God. | that in future you may spend the rest of your earthly lives, governed not by human passions, but by the will of God. | no longer to live the rest of [his] time in [the] flesh to men's lusts, but to God's will. |
1st-Peter 4:3 | Because for long enough, in times past, we have been living after the way of the Gentiles, given up to the desires of the flesh, to drinking and feasting and loose behaviour and unclean worship of images; | For you have given time enough in the past to the doing of the things which the Gentiles delight in pursuing, as you did, a course of habitual licence, debauchery, hard drinking, noisy revelry, drunkenness and unholy image-worship. | For the time past [is] sufficient [for us] to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, walking in lasciviousness, lusts, wine-drinking, revels, drinkings, and unhallowed idolatries. |
1st-Peter 4:4 | And they are wondering that you no longer go with them in this violent wasting of life, and are saying evil things of you: | At this they are astonished that you do not run into the same excess of profligacy as they do; and they speak abusively of you. | Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with [them] to the same sink of corruption, speaking injuriously [of you]; |
1st-Peter 4:5 | But they will have to give an account of themselves to him who is ready to be the judge of the living and the dead. | But they will have to give account to Him who stands ready to pronounce judgement on the living and the dead. | who shall render account to him who is ready to judge [the] living and [the] dead. |
1st-Peter 4:6 | For this was the reason why the good news of Jesus was given even to the dead, so that they might be judged as men in the flesh, but might be living before God in the spirit. | For it is with this end in view that the Good News was proclaimed even to some who were dead, that they may be judged, as all mankind will be judged, in the body, but may be living a godly life in the spirit. | For to this [end] were the glad tidings preached to [the] dead also, that they might be judged, as regards men, after [the] flesh, but live, as regards God, after [the] Spirit. |
1st-Peter 4:7 | But the end of all things is near: so be serious in your behaviour and keep on the watch with prayer; | But the end of all things is now close at hand: therefore be sober-minded and temperate, so that you may give yourselves to prayer. | But the end of all things is drawn nigh: be sober therefore, and be watchful unto prayers; |
1st-Peter 4:8 | And most of all be warm in your love for one another; because in love there is forgiveness for sins without number: | Above all continue to love one another fervently, for love throws a veil over a multitude of faults. | but before all things having fervent love among yourselves, because love covers a multitude of sins; |
1st-Peter 4:9 | Keep open house for all with a glad heart; | Extend ungrudging hospitality towards one another. | hospitable one to another, without murmuring; |
1st-Peter 4:10 | Making distribution among one another of whatever has been given to you, like true servants of the unmeasured grace of God; | Whatever be the gifts which each has received, you must use them for one another's benefit, as good stewards of God's many-sided kindness. | each according as he has received a gift, ministering it to one another, as good stewards of [the] various grace of God. |
1st-Peter 4:11 | If anyone has anything to say, let it be as the words of God; if anyone has the desire to be the servant of others, let him do it in the strength which is given by God; so that in all things God may have the glory through Jesus Christ, whose are the glory and the power for ever. | If any one preaches, let it be as uttering God's truth; if any one renders a service to others, let it be in the strength which God supplies; so that in everything glory may be given to God in the name of Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the might to the Ages of the Ages. Amen. | If any one speak as oracles of God; if any one minister as of strength which God supplies; that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom is the glory and the might for the ages of ages. Amen. |
1st-Peter 4:12 | Dear brothers, do not be surprised, as if it was something strange, if your faith is tested as by fire: | Dear friends, do not be surprised at finding that that scorching flame of persecution is raging among you to put you to the test as though some surprising thing were accidentally happening to you. | Beloved, take not [as] strange the fire [of persecution] which has taken place amongst you for [your] trial, as if a strange thing was happening to you; |
1st-Peter 4:13 | But be glad that you are given a part in the pains of Christ; so that at the revelation of his glory you may have great joy. | On the contrary, in the degree that you share in the sufferings of the Christ, rejoice, so that at the unveiling of His glory you may also rejoice with triumphant gladness. | but as ye have share in the sufferings of Christ, rejoice, that in the revelation of his glory also ye may rejoice with exultation. |
1st-Peter 4:14 | If men say evil things of you because of the name of Christ, happy are you; for the Spirit of glory and of God is resting on you. | You are to be envied, if you are being reproached for bearing the name of Christ; for in that case the Spirit of glory even the Spirit of God is resting upon you. | If ye are reproached in [the] name of Christ, blessed [are ye]; for the [Spirit] of glory and the Spirit of God rests upon you: [on their part he is blasphemed, but on your part he is glorified.] |
1st-Peter 4:15 | Let no one among you undergo punishment as a taker of life, or as a thief, or as an evil-doer, or as one who is over-interested in other men's business; | But let not one of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evil-doer, or as a spy upon other people's business. | Let none of you suffer indeed as murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or as overseer of other people's matters; |
1st-Peter 4:16 | But if he undergoes punishment as a Christian, that is no shame to him; let him give glory to God in this name. | If, however, any one suffers because he is a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God for being permitted to bear that name. | but if as a christian, let him not be ashamed, but glorify God in this name. |
1st-Peter 4:17 | For the time has come for the judging, starting with the church of God; but if it makes a start with us, what will be the end of those who are not under the rule of God? | For the time has come for judgement to begin, and to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the end of those who reject God's Good News? | For the time of having the judgment begin from the house of God [is come]; but if first from us, what [shall be] the end of those who obey not the glad tidings of God? |
1st-Peter 4:18 | And if it is hard for even the good man to get salvation, what chance has the man without religion or the sinner? | And if it is difficult even for a righteous man to be saved, what will become of irreligious men and sinners? | And if the righteous is difficultly saved, where shall the impious and [the] sinner appear? |
1st-Peter 4:19 | For this reason let those who by the purpose of God undergo punishment, keep on in well-doing and put their souls into the safe hands of their Maker. | Therefore also, let those who are suffering in accordance with the will of God entrust their souls in well-doing to a faithful Creator. | Wherefore also let them who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls in well-doing to a faithful Creator. |
