Acts 12:1Now, about that time, Herod the king made cruel attacks on the Christians.Now, about that time, King Herod arrested certain members of the Church, in order to ill-treat them;At that time Herod the king laid his hands on some of those of the assembly to do them hurt,
Acts 12:2And he put James, the brother of John, to death with the sword.and James, John's brother, he beheaded.and slew James, the brother of John, with the sword.
Acts 12:3And when he saw that this was pleasing to the Jews he went on to take Peter in addition. This was at the time of the feast of unleavened bread.Finding that this gratified the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also; these being the days of Unleavened Bread.And seeing that it was pleasing to the Jews, he went on to take Peter also: (and they were the days of unleavened bread:)
Acts 12:4And having taken him, he put him in prison, with four bands of armed men to keep watch over him; his purpose being to take him out to the people after the Passover.He had him arrested and lodged in jail, handing him over to the care of sixteen soldiers; and intended after the Passover to bring him out again to the people.whom having seized he put in prison, having delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep, purposing after the passover to bring him out to the people.
Acts 12:5So Peter was kept in prison: but the church made strong prayer to God for him.So Peter was kept in prison; but long and fervent prayer was offered to God by the Church on his behalf.Peter therefore was kept in the prison; but unceasing prayer was made by the assembly to God concerning him.
Acts 12:6And when Herod was about to take him out, the same night Peter was sleeping in chains between two armed men, and the watchmen were keeping watch before the door of the prison.Now when Herod was on the point of taking him out of prison, that very night Peter was asleep between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and guards were on duty outside the door.And when Herod was going to bring him forth, that night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and guards before the door kept the prison.
Acts 12:7And a great light was seen shining in the room, and an angel of the Lord came to Peter and, touching him on his side so that he came out of his sleep, said, Get up quickly. And his chains came off his hands.Suddenly an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the cell; and, striking Peter on the side, he woke him and said, "Rise quickly." Instantly the chains dropped off his wrists.And lo, an angel of [the] Lord came there, and a light shone in the prison: and having smitten the side of Peter, he roused him up, saying, Rise up quickly. And his chains fell off his hands.
Acts 12:8Then the angel said, Put on your shoes and get ready to go. And he did so. And he said, Put your coat round you and come with me."Fasten your girdle," said the angel, "and tie on your sandals." He did so. Then the angel said, "Throw your cloak round you, and follow me."And the angel said to him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And he did so. And he says to him, Cast thine upper garment about thee and follow me.
Acts 12:9And he went out after him; and he was not certain if what was done by the angel was a fact, for it seemed to him that he was seeing a vision.So Peter went out, following him, yet could not believe that what the angel was doing was real, but supposed that he saw a vision.And going forth he followed [him] and did not know that what was happening by means of the angel was real, but supposed he saw a vision.
Acts 12:10And when they had gone past the first and second watchmen they came to the iron door into the town, which came open by itself: and they went out and down one street; and then the angel went away.And passing through the first ward and the second, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. This opened to them of itself; and, going out, they passed on through one of the streets, and then suddenly the angel left him.And having passed through a first and second guard, they came to the iron gate which leads into the city, which opened to them of itself; and going forth they went down one street, and immediately the angel left him.
Acts 12:11And when Peter came to his senses he said, Now, truly, I am certain that the Lord has sent his angel and taken me out of the hands of Herod, against all the hopes of the Jews.Peter coming to himself said, "Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent His angel and has rescued me from the power of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were anticipating."And Peter, being come to himself, said, Now I know certainly that [the] Lord has sent forth his angel and has taken me out of the hand of Herod and all the expectation of the people of the Jews.
Acts 12:12And when he became clear about this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John named Mark, where a number of them had come together for prayer.So, after thinking things over, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John surnamed Mark, where a large number of people were assembled, praying.And having become clearly conscious [in himself], he came to the house of Mary, the mother of John who was surnamed Mark, where were many gathered together and praying.
Acts 12:13And he gave a blow on the door, and a young girl came to it, named Rhoda.When he knocked at the wicket in the door, a maidservant named Rhoda came to answer the knock;And when he had knocked at the door of the entry, a maid came to listen, by name Rhoda;
Acts 12:14And hearing the voice of Peter, in her joy she went running, without opening the door, to say that Peter was outside.and recognizing Peter's voice, for very joy she did not open the door, but ran in and told them that Peter was standing there.and having recognised the voice of Peter, through joy did not open the entry, but running in, reported that Peter was standing before the entry.
Acts 12:15And they said to her, You are off your head. But still she said, with decision, that it was so. And they said, It is his angel."You are mad," they said. But she strenuously maintained that it was true. "It is his guardian angel," they said.And they said to her, Thou art mad. But she maintained that it was so. And they said, It is his angel.
Acts 12:16But Peter went on giving blows on the door: and when it was open and they saw him, they were full of wonder.Meanwhile Peter went on knocking, until at last they opened the door and saw that it was really he, and were filled with amazement.But Peter continued knocking: and having opened, they saw him and were astonished.
Acts 12:17But he made a sign to them with his hand to be quiet, and gave them an account of how the Lord had taken him out of prison. And he said, Give the news to James and the brothers. And then he went away.But he motioned with his hand for silence, and then described to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. "Tell all this to James and the brethren," he added. Then he left them, and went to another place.And having made a sign to them with his hand to be silent, he related [to them] how the Lord had brought him out of prison; and he said, Report these things to James and to the brethren. And he went out and went to another place.
Acts 12:18Now when it was day, the armed men were greatly troubled about what had become of Peter.When morning came, there was no little commotion among the soldiers, as to what could possibly have become of Peter.And when it was day there was no small disturbance among the soldiers, what then was become of Peter.
Acts 12:19And Herod, when he sent for him, and he was not there, after questioning the watchmen, gave orders that they were to be put to death. Then he went down from Judaea to Caesarea for a time.And when Herod had had him searched for and could not find him, after sharply questioning the guards he ordered them away to execution. He then went down from Judaea to Caesarea and remained there.And Herod having sought him and not found him, having examined the guards, commanded [them] to be executed. And he went down from Judaea to Caesarea and stayed [there].
Acts 12:20Now he was very angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon: and they came to him, all together, and having made friends with Blastus, the controller of the king's house, they made a request for peace, because their country was dependent on the king's country for its food.Now the people of Tyre and Sidon had incurred Herod's violent displeasure. So they sent a large deputation to wait on him; and having secured the good will of Blastus, his treasurer, they begged the king to be friendly with them again, because their country was dependent on his for its food supply.And he was in bitter hostility with [the] Tyrians and Sidonians; but they came to him with one accord, and, having gained Blastus the king's chamberlain, sought peace, because their country was nourished by the king's.
Acts 12:21And on the day which had been fixed, Herod, dressed in his robes and seated in his place, made a public statement to them.So, on an appointed day, Herod, having arrayed himself in royal robes, took his seat on the tribunal, and was haranguing them;And on a set day, clothed in royal apparel and sitting on the elevated seat [of honour], Herod made a public oration to them.
Acts 12:22And the people, with loud cries, said, It is the voice of a god, not of a man.and the assembled people kept shouting, "It is the voice of a god, and not of a man!"And the people cried out, A god's voice and not a man's.
Acts 12:23And straight away the angel of the Lord sent a disease on him, because he did not give the glory to God: and his flesh was wasted away by worms, and so he came to his end.Instantly an angel of the Lord struck him, because he had not given the glory to God, and being eaten up by worms, he died.And immediately an angel of [the] Lord smote him, because he did not give the glory to God, and he expired, eaten of worms.
Acts 12:24But the word of the Lord went on increasing.But God's Message prospered, and converts were multiplied.But the word of God grew and spread itself.
Acts 12:25And Barnabas and Saul came back from Jerusalem, when their work was ended, taking with them John named Mark.And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, having discharged their mission, and they brought with them John, surnamed Mark.And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, having fulfilled the service [entrusted to them], taking also with them John, surnamed Mark.
