John 16:1 | I have said these things to you so that you may not be in doubt. | "These things I have spoken to you in order to clear stumbling-blocks out of your path. | These things I have spoken unto you that ye may not be offended. |
John 16:2 | They will put you out of the Synagogues: yes, the time is coming when whoever puts you to death will have the belief that he is doing God's pleasure. | You will be excluded from the synagogues; nay more, the time is coming when any one who has murdered one of you will suppose he is offering service to God. | They shall put you out of the synagogues; but the hour is coming that every one who kills you will think to render service to God; |
John 16:3 | They will do these things to you because they have not had knowledge of the Father or of me. | And they will do these things because they have failed to recognize the Father and to discover who I am. | and these things they will do because they have not known the Father nor me. |
John 16:4 | I have said these things to you so that when the time comes, what I have said may come to your mind. I did not say them to you at the first, because then I was still with you. | But I have spoken these things to you in order that when the time for their accomplishment comes you may remember them, and may recollect that I told you. I did not, however, tell you all this at first, because I was still with you. | But I have spoken these things to you, that when their hour shall have come, ye may remember them, that I have said [them] unto you. But I did not say these things unto you from [the] beginning, because I was with you. |
John 16:5 | But now I am going to him who sent me; and not one of you says to me, Where are you going? | But now I an returning to Him who sent me; and not one of you asks me where I am going. | But now I go to him that has sent me, and none of you demands of me, Where goest thou? |
John 16:6 | But your hearts are full of sorrow because I have said these things. | But grief has filled your hearts because I have said all this to you. | But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. |
John 16:7 | But what I am saying is true: my going is for your good: for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. | "Yet it is the truth that I am telling you it is to your advantage that I go away. For unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. | But I say the truth to you, It is profitable for you that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I go I will send him to you. |
John 16:8 | And he, when he comes, will make the world conscious of sin, and of righteousness, and of being judged: | And He, when He comes, will convict the world in respect of sin, of righteousness, and of judgement; | And having come, he will bring demonstration to the world, of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: |
John 16:9 | Of sin, because they have not faith in me; | of sin, because they do not believe in me; | of sin, because they do not believe on me; |
John 16:10 | Of righteousness, because I go to the Father and you will see me no more; | of righteousness, because I am going to the Father, and you will no longer see me; | of righteousness, because I go away to [my] Father, and ye behold me no longer; |
John 16:11 | Of being judged, because the ruler of this world has been judged. | of judgement, because the Prince of this world is under sentence. | of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. |
John 16:12 | I have still much to say to you, but you are not strong enough for it now. | "I have much more to say to you, but you are unable at present to bear the burden of it. | I have yet many things to say to you, but ye cannot bear them now. |
John 16:13 | However, when he, the Spirit of true knowledge, has come, he will be your guide into all true knowledge: for his words will not come from himself, but whatever has come to his hearing, that he will say: and he will make clear to you the things to come. | But when He has come the Spirit of Truth He will guide you into all the truth. For He will not speak as Himself originating what He says, but all that He hears He will speak, and He will make known the future to you. | But when *he* is come, the Spirit of truth, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but whatsoever he shall hear he shall speak; and he will announce to you what is coming. |
John 16:14 | He will give me glory, because he will take of what is mine, and make it clear to you. | He will glorify me, because He will take of what is mine and will make it known to you. | He shall glorify me, for he shall receive of mine and shall announce [it] to you. |
John 16:15 | Everything which the Father has is mine: that is why I say, He will take of what is mine and will make it clear to you. | Everything that the Father has is mine; that is why I said that the Spirit of Truth takes of what is mine and will make it known to you. | All things that the Father has are mine; on account of this I have said that he receives of mine and shall announce [it] to you. |
John 16:16 | After a little time you will see me no longer; and then again, after a little time, you will see me. | "A little while and you see me no more, and again a little while and you shall see me." | A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me, [because I go away to the Father]. |
John 16:17 | So some of the disciples said one to another, What is this he is saying, After a little time, you will see me no longer; and then again, after a little time, you will see me? and, I am going to the Father? | Some of His disciples therefore said to one another, "What does this mean which He is telling us, `A little while and you do not see me, and again a little while and you shall see me,' and `Because I am going to the Father'?" | [Some] of his disciples therefore said to one another, What is this he says to us, A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me, and, Because I go away to the Father? |
John 16:18 | So they said again and again, What is this he is saying, A little time? His words are not clear to us. | So they asked one another repeatedly, "What can that `little while' mean which He speaks of? We do not understand His words." | They said therefore, What is this which he says [of] the little while? We do not know [of] what he speaks. |
John 16:19 | Jesus saw that they had a desire to put the question to him, so he said to them, Is this what you are questioning one with another, why I said, After a little time, you will see me no longer; and then again, after a little time, you will see me? | Jesus perceived that they wanted to ask Him, and He said, "Is this what you are questioning one another about my saying, `A little while and you do not see me, and again a little while and you shall see me'? | Jesus knew therefore that they desired to demand of him, and said to them, Do ye inquire of this among yourselves that I said, A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me? |
John 16:20 | Truly I say to you, You will be weeping and sorrowing, but the world will be glad: you will be sad, but your sorrow will be turned into joy. | In most solemn truth I tell you that you will weep aloud and lament, but the world will be glad. You will mourn, but your grief will be turned into gladness. | Verily, verily, I say to you, that ye shall weep and lament, ye, but the world shall rejoice; and ye will be grieved, but your grief shall be turned to joy. |
John 16:21 | When a woman is about to give birth she has sorrow, because her hour is come; but when she has given birth to the child, the pain is put out of her mind by the joy that a man has come into the world. | A woman, when she is in labour, has sorrow, because her time has come. But when she has given birth to the babe, she no longer remembers the pain, because of her joy at a child being born into the world. | A woman, when she gives birth to a child, has grief because her hour has come; but when the child is born, she no longer remembers the trouble, on account of the joy that a man has been born into the world. |
John 16:22 | So you have sorrow now: but I will see you again, and your hearts will be glad, and no one will take away your joy. | So you also now have sorrow; but I shall see you again, and your hearts will be glad, and your gladness no one will take away from you. | And ye now therefore have grief; but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one takes from you. |
John 16:23 | And on that day you will put no questions to me. Truly I say to you, Whatever request you make to the Father, he will give it to you in my name. | You will put no questions to me then. "In most solemn truth I tell you that whatever you ask the Father for in my name He will give you. | And in that day ye shall demand nothing of me: verily, verily, I say to you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give you. |
John 16:24 | Up to now you have made no request in my name: do so, and it will be answered, so that your hearts may be full of joy. | As yet you have not asked for anything in my name: ask, and you shall receive, that your hearts may be filled with gladness. | Hitherto ye have asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. |
John 16:25 | All this I have said to you in veiled language: but the time is coming when I will no longer say things in veiled language but will give you knowledge of the Father clearly. | "All this I have spoken to you in veiled language. The time is coming when I shall no longer speak to you in veiled language, but will tell you about the Father in plain words. | These things I have spoken to you in allegories; the hour is coming that I will no longer speak to you in allegories, but will declare to you openly concerning the Father. |
John 16:26 | In that day you will make requests in my name: and I do not say that I will make prayer to the Father for you, | At that time you will make your requests in my name; and I do not promise to ask the Father on your behalf, | In that day ye shall ask in my name; and I say not to you that I will demand of the Father for you, |
John 16:27 | For the Father himself gives his love to you, because you have given your love to me and have had faith that I came from God. | for the Father Himself holds you dear, because you have held me dear and have believed that I came from the Father's presence. | for the Father himself has affection for you, because ye have had affection for me, and have believed that I came out from God. |
John 16:28 | I came out from the Father and have come into the world: again, I go away from the world and go to the Father. | I came from the Father and have come into the world. Again I am leaving the world and am going to the Father." | I came out from the Father and have come into the world; again, I leave the world and go to the Father. |
John 16:29 | His disciples said, Now you are talking clearly and not in veiled language. | "Ah, now you are using plain language," said His disciples, "and are uttering no figure of speech! | His disciples say to him, Lo, now thou speakest openly and utterest no allegory. |
John 16:30 | Now we are certain that you have knowledge of all things and have no need for anyone to put questions to you: through this we have faith that you came from God. | Now we know that you have all knowledge, and do not need to be pressed with questions. Through this we believe that you came from God." | Now we know that thou knowest all things, and hast not need that any one should demand of thee. By this we believe that thou art come from God. |
John 16:31 | Jesus made answer, Have you faith now? | "Do you at last believe?" replied Jesus. | Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe? |
John 16:32 | See, a time is coming, yes, it is now here, when you will go away in all directions, every man to his house, and I will be by myself: but I am not by myself, because the Father is with me. | "Remember that the time is coming, nay, has already come, for you all to be dispersed each to his own home and to leave me alone. And yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. | Behold, [the] hour is coming, and has come, that ye shall be scattered, each to his own, and shall leave me alone; and [yet] I am not alone, for the Father is with me. |
John 16:33 | I have said all these things to you so that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble: but take heart! I have overcome the world. | "I have spoken all this to you in order that in me you may have peace. In the world you have affliction. But keep up your courage: *I* have won the victory over the world." | These things have I spoken to you that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye have tribulation; but be of good courage: I have overcome the world. |
