John 19:1Then Pilate took Jesus and had him whipped with cords.Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him.Then Pilate therefore took Jesus and scourged [him].
John 19:2And the men of the army made a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they put a purple robe on him.And the soldiers, twisting twigs of thorn into a wreath, put it on His head, and threw round Him a crimson cloak.And the soldiers having plaited a crown of thorns put it on his head, and put a purple robe on him,
John 19:3And they kept coming and saying, Long life to the King of the Jews! And they gave him blows with their hands.Then they began to march up to Him, saying in a mocking voice, "Hail King of the Jews!" And they struck Him with the palms of their hands.and came to him and said, Hail, king of the Jews! and gave him blows on the face.
John 19:4And Pilate went out again and said to them, See, I let him come out to you to make it clear to you that I see no wrong in him.Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews, "See, I am bringing him out to you to let you clearly understand that I find no crime in him."And Pilate went out again and says to them, Lo, I bring him out to you, that ye may know that I find in him no fault whatever.
John 19:5Then Jesus came out with the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, Here is the man!So Jesus came out, wearing the wreath of thorns and the crimson cloak. And Pilate said to them, "See, there is the man."(Jesus therefore went forth without, wearing the crown of thorn, and the purple robe.) And he says to them, Behold the man!
John 19:6So when the chief priests and the police saw him they gave a loud cry, To the cross! to the cross! Pilate said to them, Take him yourselves and put him on the cross: I see no crime in him.As soon then as the High Priests and the officers saw Him, they shouted "To the cross! To the cross!" "Take him yourselves and crucify him," said Pilate; "for I, at any rate, find no crime in him."When therefore the chief priests and the officers saw him they cried out saying, Crucify, crucify [him]. Pilate says to them, Take him ye and crucify [him], for I find no fault in him.
John 19:7And the Jews made answer, We have a law, and by that law it is right for him to be put to death because he said he was the Son of God."We," replied the Jews, "have a Law, and in accordance with that Law he ought to die, for having claimed to be the Son of God."The Jews answered him, We have a law, and according to [our] law he ought to die, because he made himself Son of God.
John 19:8When this saying came to Pilate's ears his fear became greater;More alarmed than ever, Pilate no sooner heard these words than he re-entered the Praetorium and began to question Jesus.When Pilate therefore heard this word, he was the rather afraid,
John 19:9And he went again into the Praetorium and said to Jesus, Where do you come from? But Jesus gave him no answer."What is your origin?" he asked. But Jesus gave him no answer.and went into the praetorium again and says to Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.
John 19:10Then Pilate said to him, You say nothing to me? is it not clear to you that I have power to let you go free and power to put you to death on the cross?"Do you refuse to speak even to me?" asked Pilate; "do you not know that I have it in my power either to release you or to crucify you?"Pilate therefore says to him, Speakest thou not to *me*? Dost thou not know that I have authority to release thee and have authority to crucify thee?
John 19:11Jesus gave this answer: You would have no power at all over me if it was not given to you by God; so that he who gave me up to you has the greater sin."You would have had no power whatever over me," replied Jesus, "had it not been granted you from above. On that account he who has delivered me up to you is more guilty than you are."Jesus answered, Thou hadst no authority whatever against me if it were not given to thee from above. On this account he that has delivered me up to thee has [the] greater sin.
John 19:12Hearing this, Pilate had a desire to let him go free, but the Jews said in a loud voice, If you let this man go, you are not Caesar's friend: everyone who makes himself a king goes against Caesar.Upon receiving this answer, Pilate was for releasing Him. But the Jews kept shouting, "If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar's. Every one who sets himself up as king declares himself a rebel against Caesar."From this time Pilate sought to release him; but the Jews cried out saying, If thou releasest this [man], thou art not a friend to Caesar. Every one making himself a king speaks against Caesar.
John 19:13So when these words came to Pilate's ear, he took Jesus out, seating himself in the judge's seat in a place named in Hebrew, Gabbatha, or the Stone Floor.On hearing this, Pilate brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judge's seat in a place called the Pavement or in Hebrew, Gabbatha.Pilate therefore, having heard these words, led Jesus out and sat down upon [the] judgment-seat, at a place called Pavement, but in Hebrew Gabbatha;
John 19:14(It was the day when they made ready for the Passover; and it was about the sixth hour.) And he said to the Jews, There is your King!It was the day of Preparation for the Passover, about six o'clock in the morning. Then he said to the Jews, "There is your king!"(now it was [the] preparation of the passover; it was about the sixth hour;) and he says to the Jews, Behold your king!
John 19:15Then they gave a loud cry, Away with him! away with him! to the cross! Pilate said to them, Am I to put your King to death on the cross? The chief priests said in answer, We have no king but Caesar.This caused a storm of outcries, "Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!" "Am I to crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king, except Caesar," answered the High Priests.But they cried out, Take [him] away, take [him] away, crucify him. Pilate says to them, Shall I crucify your king? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
John 19:16So then he gave him up to them to be put to death on the cross. And they took Jesus away;Then Pilate gave Him up to them to be crucified. Accordingly they took Jesus;Then therefore he delivered him up to them, that he might be crucified; and they took Jesus and led him away.
John 19:17And he went out with his cross on him to the place which is named Dead Man's Head (in Hebrew, Golgotha):and He went out carrying His own cross, to the place called Skull-place or, in Hebrew, GolgothaAnd he went out, bearing his cross, to the place called [place] of a skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha;
John 19:18Where they put him on the cross with two others, one on this side and one on that, and Jesus in the middle.where they nailed Him to a cross, and two others at the same time, one on each side and Jesus in the middle.where they crucified him, and with him two others, [one] on this side, and [one] on that, and Jesus in the middle.
John 19:19And Pilate put on the cross a statement in writing. The writing was: JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.And Pilate wrote a notice and had it fastened to the top of the cross. It ran thus: JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.And Pilate wrote a title also and put it on the cross. But there was written: Jesus the Nazaraean, the King of the Jews.
John 19:20The writing was seen by a number of the Jews, for the place where Jesus was put to death on the cross was near the town; and the writing was in Hebrew and Latin and Greek.Many of the Jews read this notice, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the notice was in three languages Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.This title therefore many of the Jews read, for the place of the city where Jesus was crucified was near; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, Latin.
John 19:21Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, Do not put, The King of the Jews, but, He said, I am the King of the Jews.This led the Jewish High Priests to remonstrate with Pilate. "You should not write `The King of the Jews,'" they said, "but that he claimed to be King of the Jews."The chief priests of the Jews therefore said to Pilate, Do not write, The king of the Jews, but that *he* said, I am king of the Jews.
John 19:22But Pilate made answer, What I have put in writing will not be changed."What I have written I have written," was Pilate's answer.Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written.
John 19:23And when Jesus was nailed to the cross, the men of the army took his clothing, and made a division of it into four parts, to every man a part, and they took his coat: now the coat was without a join, made out of one bit of cloth.So the soldiers, as soon as they had crucified Jesus, took His garments, including His tunic, and divided them into four parts one part for each soldier. The tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece.The soldiers therefore, when they had crucified Jesus, took his clothes, and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and the body-coat; but the body-coat was seamless, woven through the whole from the top.
John 19:24So they said among themselves, Let this not be cut up, but let us put it to the decision of chance and see who gets it. (They did this so that the Writings might come true, which say, They made a distribution of my clothing among them, and my coat they put to the decision of chance.) This was what the men of the army did.So they said to one another, "Do not let us tear it. Let us draw lots for it." This happened that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says, "They shared my garments among them, and drew lots for my clothing." That was just what the soldiers did.They said therefore to one another, Let us not rend it, but let us cast lots for it, whose it shall be; that the scripture might be fulfilled which says, They parted my garments among themselves, and on my vesture they cast lots. The soldiers therefore did these things.
John 19:25Now by the side of the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister Mary, the wife of Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene.Now standing close to the cross of Jesus were His mother and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala.And by the cross of Jesus stood his mother, and the sister of his mother, Mary the [wife] of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala.
John 19:26So when Jesus saw his mother and the disciple who was dear to him, he said to his mother, Mother, there is your son!So Jesus, seeing His mother, and seeing the disciple whom He loved standing near, said to His mother, "Behold, your son!"Jesus therefore, seeing his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, says to his mother, Woman, behold thy son.
John 19:27Then he said to the disciple, There is your mother! And from that hour the disciple took her to his house.Then He said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that time the disciple received her into his own home.Then he says unto the disciple, Behold thy mother. And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.
John 19:28After this, being conscious that all things had now been done so that the Writings might come true, Jesus said, Give me water.After this, Jesus, knowing that everything was now brought to an end, said that the Scripture might be fulfilled, "I am thirsty."After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now finished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, says, I thirst.
John 19:29Now there was a vessel ready, full of bitter wine, and they put a sponge full of it on a stick and put it to his mouth.There was a jar of wine standing there. With this wine they filled a sponge, put it on the end of a stalk of hyssop, and lifted it to His mouth.There was a vessel therefore there full of vinegar, and having filled a sponge with vinegar, and putting hyssop round it, they put it up to his mouth.
John 19:30So when Jesus had taken the wine he said, All is done. And with his head bent he gave up his spirit.As soon as Jesus had taken the wine, He said, "It is finished." And then, bowing His head, He yielded up His spirit.When therefore Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished; and having bowed his head, he delivered up his spirit.
John 19:31Now it was the day of getting ready for the Passover, and so that the bodies might not be on the cross on the Sabbath (because the day of that Sabbath was a great day), the Jews made a request to Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.Meanwhile the Jews, because it was the day of Preparation for the Passover, and in order that the bodies might not remain on the crosses during the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was one of special solemnity), requested Pilate to have the legs of the dying men broken, and the bodies removed.The Jews therefore, that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, for it was [the] preparation, (for the day of that sabbath was a great [day],) demanded of Pilate that their legs might be broken and they taken away.
John 19:32So the men of the army came, and the legs of the first were broken and then of the other who was put to death on the cross with Jesus:Accordingly the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and also of the other who had been crucified with Jesus.The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first and of the other that had been crucified with him;
John 19:33But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was dead by this time, and so his legs were not broken;Then they came to Jesus Himself: but when they saw that He was already dead, they refrained from breaking His legs.but coming to Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead they did not break his legs,
John 19:34But one of the men made a wound in his side with a spear, and straight away there came out blood and water.One of the soldiers, however, made a thrust at His side with a lance, and immediately blood and water flowed out.but one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately there came out blood and water.
John 19:35And he who saw it has given witness (and his witness is true; he is certain that what he says is true) so that you may have belief.This statement is the testimony of an eye-witness, and it is true. He knows that he is telling the truth in order that you also may believe.And he who saw it bears witness, and his witness is true, and he knows that he says true that ye also may believe.
John 19:36These things came about so that the Writings might be true, No bone of his body will be broken.For all this took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled which declares, "Not one of His bones shall be broken."For these things took place that the scripture might be fulfilled, Not a bone of him shall be broken.
John 19:37And again another verse says, They will see him who was wounded by their spears.And again another Scripture says, "They shall look on Him whom they have pierced."And again another scripture says, They shall look on him whom they pierced.
John 19:38After these things, Joseph of Arimathaea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, made a request to Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate said he might do so. So he went and took away his body.After this, Joseph of Arimathaea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but for fear of the Jews a secret disciple, asked Pilate's permission to carry away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him leave. So he came and removed the body.And after these things Joseph of Arimathaea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly through fear of the Jews, demanded of Pilate that he might take the body of Jesus: and Pilate allowed it. He came therefore and took away the body of Jesus.
John 19:39And Nicodemus came (he who had first come to Jesus by night) with a roll of myrrh and aloes mixed, about a hundred pounds.Nicodemus too he who at first had visited Jesus by night came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, in weight about seventy or eighty pounds.And Nicodemus also, who at first came to Jesus by night, came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds [weight].
John 19:40Then they took the body of Jesus, folding linen about it with the spices, as is the way of the Jews when they put the dead to rest.Taking down the body they wrapped it in linen cloths along with the spices, in accordance with the Jewish mode of preparing for burial.They took therefore the body of Jesus and bound it up in linen with the spices, as it is the custom with the Jews to prepare for burial.
John 19:41Now there was a garden near the cross, and in the garden a new place for the dead in which no man had ever been put.There was a garden at the place where Jesus had been crucified, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had yet been buried.But there was in the place where he had been crucified a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had ever been laid.
John 19:42So they put Jesus there, because it was the Jews' day of getting ready for the Passover, and the place was near.Therefore, because it was the day of Preparation for the Jewish Passover, and the tomb was close at hand, they put Jesus there.There therefore, on account of the preparation of the Jews, because the tomb was near, they laid Jesus.
