Matthew 2:1 | Now when the birth of Jesus took place in Beth-lehem of Judaea, in the days of Herod the king, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, | Now after the birth of Jesus, which took place at Bethlehem in Judaea in the reign of King Herod, excitement was produced in Jerusalem by the arrival of certain Magi from the east, | Now Jesus having been born in Bethlehem of Judaea, in the days of Herod the king, behold magi from the east arrived at Jerusalem, saying, |
Matthew 2:2 | Saying, Where is the King of the Jews whose birth has now taken place? We have seen his star in the east and have come to give him worship. | inquiring, "Where is the newly born king of the Jews? For we have seen his Star in the east, and have come here to do him homage." | Where is the king of the Jews that has been born? for we have seen his star in the east, and have come to do him homage. |
Matthew 2:3 | And when it came to the ears of Herod the king, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. | Reports of this soon reached the king, and greatly agitated not only him but all the people of Jerusalem. | But Herod the king having heard [of it], was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; |
Matthew 2:4 | And he got together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, questioning them as to where the birth-place of the Christ would be. | So he assembled all the High Priests and Scribes of the people, and anxiously asked them where the Christ was to be born. | and, assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ should be born. |
Matthew 2:5 | And they said to him, In Beth-lehem of Judaea; for so it is said in the writings of the prophet, | "At Bethlehem in Judaea," they replied; "for so it stands written in the words of the Prophet, | And they said to him, In Bethlehem of Judaea; for thus it is written through the prophet: |
Matthew 2:6 | You Beth-lehem, in the land of Judah, are not the least among the chiefs of Judah: out of you will come a ruler, who will be the keeper of my people Israel. | "`And thou, Bethlehem in the land of Judah, by no means the least honorable art thou among princely places in Judah! For from thee shall come a prince one who shall be the Shepherd of My People Israel.'" | And *thou* Bethlehem, land of Juda, art in no wise the least among the governors of Juda; for out of thee shall go forth a leader who shall shepherd my people Israel. |
Matthew 2:7 | Then Herod sent for the wise men privately, and put questions to them about what time the star had been seen. | Thereupon Herod sent privately for the Magi and ascertained from them the exact time of the star's appearing. | Then Herod, having secretly called the magi, inquired of them accurately the time of the star that was appearing; |
Matthew 2:8 | And he sent them to Beth-lehem and said, Go and make certain where the young child is; and when you have seen him, let me have news of it, so that I may come and give him worship. | He then directed them to go to Bethlehem, adding, "Go and make careful inquiry about the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and do him homage." | and having sent them to Bethlehem, said, Go, search out accurately concerning the child, and when ye shall have found [him] bring me back word, so that *I* also may come and do him homage. |
Matthew 2:9 | And after hearing the king, they went on their way; and the star which they saw in the east went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the young child was. | After hearing what the king said, they went to Bethlehem, while, strange to say, the star they had seen in the east led them on until it came and stood over the place where the babe was. | And they having heard the king went their way; and lo, the star, which they had seen in the east, went before them until it came and stood over the place where the little child was. |
Matthew 2:10 | And when they saw the star they were full of joy. | When they saw the star, the sight filled them with intense joy. | And when they saw the star they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. |
Matthew 2:11 | And they came into the house, and saw the young child with Mary, his mother; and falling down on their faces they gave him worship; and from their store they gave him offerings of gold, perfume, and spices. | So they entered the house; and when they saw the babe with His mother Mary, they prostrated themselves and did Him homage, and opening their treasure-chests offered gifts to Him gold, frankincense, and myrrh. | And having come into the house they saw the little child with Mary his mother, and falling down did him homage. And having opened their treasures, they offered to him gifts, gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. |
Matthew 2:12 | And it was made clear to them by God in a dream that they were not to go back to Herod; so they went into their country by another way. | But being forbidden by God in a dream to return to Herod, they went back to their own country by a different route. | And being divinely instructed in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. |
Matthew 2:13 | And when they had gone, an angel of the Lord came to Joseph in a dream, saying, Get up and take the young child and his mother, and go into Egypt, and do not go from there till I give you word; for Herod will be searching for the young child to put him to death. | When they were gone, and angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Rise: take the babe and His mother and escape to Egypt, and remain there till I bring you word. For Herod is about to make search for the child in order to destroy Him." | Now, they having departed, behold, an angel of [the] Lord appears in a dream to Joseph, saying, Arise, take to [thee] the little child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be there until I shall tell thee; for Herod will seek the little child to destroy it. |
Matthew 2:14 | So he took the young child and his mother by night, and went into Egypt; | So Joseph roused himself and took the babe and His mother by night and departed into Egypt. | And, having arisen, he took to [him] the little child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt. |
Matthew 2:15 | And was there till the death of Herod; so that the word of the Lord through the prophet might come true, Out of Egypt have I sent for my son. | There he remained till Herod's death, that what the Lord had said through the Prophet might be fulfilled, "Out of Egypt I called My Son." | And he was there until the death of Herod, that that might be fulfilled which was spoken by [the] Lord through the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. |
Matthew 2:16 | Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, was very angry; and he sent out, and put to death all the male children in Beth-lehem and in all the parts round about it, from two years old and under, acting on the knowledge which he had got with care from the wise men. | Then Herod, finding that the Magi had trifled with him, was furious, and sent and massacred all the boys under two years of age, in Bethlehem and all its neighbourhood, according to the date he had so carefully ascertained from the Magi. | Then Herod, seeing that he had been mocked by the magi, was greatly enraged; and sent and slew all the boys which [were] in Bethlehem, and in all its borders, from two years and under, according to the time which he had accurately inquired from the magi. |
Matthew 2:17 | Then the word of Jeremiah the prophet came true, | Then were these words, spoken by the Prophet Jeremiah, fulfilled, | Then was fulfilled that which was spoken through Jeremias the prophet, saying, |
Matthew 2:18 | In Ramah there was a sound of weeping and great sorrow, Rachel weeping for her children, and she would not be comforted for their loss. | "A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and bitter lamentation: It was Rachel bewailing her children, and she refused to be comforted because there were no more." | A voice has been heard in Rama, weeping, and great lamentation: Rachel weeping [for] her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. |
Matthew 2:19 | But when Herod was dead, an angel of the Lord came in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, | But after Herod's death an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, and said to him, | But Herod having died, behold, an angel of [the] Lord appears in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, |
Matthew 2:20 | Saying, Get up and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: because they who were attempting to take the young child's life are dead. | "Rise from sleep, and take the child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the child's life are dead." | Arise, take to [thee] the little child and its mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they who sought the life of the little child are dead. |
Matthew 2:21 | And he got up, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel. | So he roused himself and took the child and His mother and came into the land of Israel. | And he arose and took to [him] the little child and its mother, and came into the land of Israel; |
Matthew 2:22 | But when it came to his ears that Archelaus was ruling over Judaea in the place of his father Herod, he was in fear of going there; and God having given him news of the danger in a dream, he went out of the way into the country parts of Galilee. | But hearing that Archelaus had succeeded his father Herod on the throne of Judaea, he was afraid to go there; and being instructed by God in a dream he withdrew into Galilee, | but having heard that 'Archelaus reigns over Judaea, instead of Herod his father,' he was afraid to go there; and having been divinely instructed in a dream, he went away into the parts of Galilee, |
Matthew 2:23 | And he came and was living in a town named Nazareth: so that the word of the prophets might come true, He will be named a Nazarene. | and went and settled in a town called Nazareth, in order that these words spoken through the Prophets might be fulfilled, "He shall be called a Nazarene." | and came and dwelt in a town called Nazareth; so that that should be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophets, He shall be called a Nazaraean. |
