John 13:1 | Now before the feast of the Passover, it was clear to Jesus that the time had come for him to go away from this world to the Father. Having once had love for those in the world who were his, his love for them went on to the end. | Now just before the Feast of the Passover this incident took place. Jesus knew that the time had come for Him to leave this world and go to the Father; and having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. | Before the festival day of the pasch, Jesus knowing that his hour was come, that he should pass out of this world to the Father: having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them unto the end. |
John 13:2 | So while a meal was going on, the Evil One having now put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to be false to him, | While supper was proceeding, the Devil having by this time suggested to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, the thought of betraying Him, Jesus, | And when supper was done, (the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray him,) |
John 13:3 | Jesus, being conscious that the Father had put everything into his hands, and that he came from God and was going to God, | although He knew that the Father had put everything into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was now going to God, | Knowing that the Father had given him all things into his hands, and that he came from God, and goeth to God; |
John 13:4 | Got up from table, put off his robe and took a cloth and put it round him. | rose from the table, threw off His upper garments, and took a towel and tied it round Him. | He riseth from supper, and layeth aside his garments, and having taken a towel, girded himself. |
John 13:5 | Then he put water into a basin and was washing the feet of the disciples and drying them with the cloth which was round him. | Then He poured water into a basin, and proceeded to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel which He had put round Him. | After that, he putteth water into a basin, and began to wash the feet of the disciples, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. |
John 13:6 | So he came to Simon Peter. Peter said, Lord, are my feet to be washed by you? | When He came to Simon Peter, Peter objected. "Master," he said, "are *you* going to wash my feet?" | He cometh therefore to Simon Peter. And Peter saith to him: Lord, dost thou wash my feet? |
John 13:7 | And Jesus, answering, said to him, What I do is not clear to you now, but it will be clear to you in time to come. | "What I am doing," answered Jesus, "for the present you do not know, but afterwards you shall know." | Jesus answered, and said to him: What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. |
John 13:8 | Peter said, I will never let my feet be washed by you, never. Jesus said in answer, If I do not make you clean you have no part with me. | "Never, while the world lasts," said Peter, "shall you wash my feet." "If I do not wash you," replied Jesus, "you have no share with me." | Peter saith to him: Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him: If I wash thee not, thou shalt have no part with me. |
John 13:9 | Simon Peter said to him, Lord, not my feet only, but my hands and my head. | "Master," said Peter, "wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head." | Simon Peter saith to him: Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head. |
John 13:10 | Jesus said to him, He who is bathed has need only to have his feet washed and then he is clean all over: and you, my disciples, are clean, but not all of you. | "Any one who has lately bathed," said Jesus, "does not need to wash more than his feet, but is clean all over. And you my disciples are clean, and yet this is not true of all of you." | Jesus saith to him: He that is washed, needeth not but to wash his feet, but is clean wholly. And you are clean, but not all. |
John 13:11 | (He had knowledge who was false to him; that is why he said, You are not all clean.) | For He knew who was betraying Him, and that was why He said, "You are not all of you clean." | For he knew who he was that would betray him; therefore he said: You are not all clean. |
John 13:12 | Then, after washing their feet and putting on his robe again, he took his seat and said to them, Do you see what I have done to you? | So after He had washed their feet, put on His garments again, and returned to the table, He said to them, "Do you understand what I have done to you? | Then after he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, being set down again, he said to them: Know you what I have done to you? |
John 13:13 | You give me the name of Master and Lord: and you are right; that is what I am. | You call me `The Rabbi' and `The Master,' and rightly so, for such I am. | You call me Master, and Lord; and you say well, for so I am. |
John 13:14 | If then I, the Lord and the Master, have made your feet clean, it is right for you to make one another's feet clean. | If I then, your Master and Rabbi, have washed your feet, it is also your duty to wash one another's feet. | If then I being your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; you also ought to wash one another's feet. |
John 13:15 | I have given you an example, so that you may do what I have done to you. | For I have set you an example in order that you may do what I have done to you. | For I have given you an example, that as I have done to you, so you do also. |
John 13:16 | Truly I say to you, A servant is not greater than his lord; and he who is sent is not greater than the one who sent him. | In most solemn truth I tell you that a servant is not superior to his master, nor is a messenger superior to him who sent him. | Amen, amen I say to you: The servant is not greater than his lord; neither is the apostle greater than he that sent him. |
John 13:17 | If these things are clear to you, happy are you if you do them. | If you know all this, blessed are you if you act accordingly. | If you know these things, you shall be blessed if you do them. |
John 13:18 | I am not talking of you all: I have knowledge of my true disciples, but things are as they are, so that the Writings may come true, The foot of him who takes bread with me is lifted up against me. | I am not speaking of all of you. I know whom I have chosen, but things are as they are in order that the Scripture may be fulfilled, which says, `He who eats my bread has lifted up his heel against me.' | I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen. But that the scripture may be fulfilled: He that eateth bread with me, shall lift up his heel against me. |
John 13:19 | From this time forward, I give you knowledge of things before they come about, so that when they come about you may have belief that I am he. | From this time forward I tell you things before they happen, in order that when they do happen you may believe that I am He. | At present I tell you, before it come to pass: that when it shall come to pass, you may believe that I am he. |
John 13:20 | Truly I say to you, He who takes to his heart anyone whom I send, takes me to his heart; and he who so takes me, takes him who sent me. | In most solemn truth I tell you that he who receives whoever I send receives me, and that he who receives me receives Him who sent me." | Amen, amen I say to you, he that receiveth whomsoever I send, receiveth me; and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me. |
John 13:21 | When Jesus had said this he was troubled in spirit, and gave witness, saying, Truly I say to you, that one of you will be false to me. | After speaking thus Jesus was troubled in spirit and said with deep earnestness, "In most solemn truth I tell you that one of you will betray me." | When Jesus had said these things, he was troubled in spirit; and he testified, and said: Amen, amen I say to you, one of you shall betray me. |
John 13:22 | Then the eyes of the disciples were turned on one another, in doubt as to whom he had in mind. | The disciples began looking at one another, at a loss to know to which of them He was referring. | The disciples therefore looked one upon another, doubting of whom he spoke. |
John 13:23 | There was at table one of his disciples, the one dear to Jesus, resting his head on Jesus' breast. | There was at table one of His disciples the one Jesus loved reclining with his head on Jesus's bosom. | Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. |
John 13:24 | Making a sign to him, Simon Peter said, Who is it he is talking about? | Making a sign therefore to him, Simon Peter said, "Tell us to whom he is referring." | Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, and said to him: Who is it of whom he speaketh? |
John 13:25 | He, then, resting his head on Jesus' breast, said to him, Lord, who is it? | So he, having his head on Jesus's bosom, leaned back and asked, "Master, who is it?" | He therefore, leaning on the breast of Jesus, saith to him: Lord, who is it? |
John 13:26 | This was the answer Jesus gave: It is the one to whom I will give this bit of bread after I have put it in the vessel. Then he took the bit of bread, put it into the vessel, and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. | "It is the one," answered Jesus, "for whom I shall dip this piece of bread and to whom I shall give it." Accordingly He dipped the piece of bread, and took it and gave it to Judas, the son of the Iscariot Simon. | Jesus answered: He it is to whom I shall reach bread dipped. And when he had dipped the bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. |
John 13:27 | And when Judas took the bread Satan went into him. Then Jesus said to him, Do quickly what you have to do. | Then, after Judas had received the piece of bread, Satan entered into him. "Lose no time about it," said Jesus to him. | And after the morsel, Satan entered into him. And Jesus said to him: That which thou dost, do quickly. |
John 13:28 | Now it was not clear to anyone at table why he said this to him. | But why He said this no one else at the table understood. | Now no man at the table knew to what purpose he said this unto him. |
John 13:29 | Some were of the opinion that because Judas kept the money-bag Jesus said to him, Get the things we have need of for the feast; or, that he was to give something to the poor. | Some, however, supposed that because Judas had the money-box Jesus meant, "Buy what we require for the Festival," or that he should give something to the poor. | For some thought, because Judas had the purse, that Jesus had said to him: Buy those things which we have need of for the festival day: or that he should give something to the poor. |
John 13:30 | So Judas, having taken the bit of bread, straight away went out: and it was night. | So Judas took the piece of bread and immediately went out. And it was night. | He therefore having received the morsel, went out immediately. And it was night. |
John 13:31 | Then when he had gone out, Jesus said, Now is glory given to the Son of man, and God is given glory in him. | So when he was gone out, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him. | When he therefore was gone out, Jesus said: Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. |
John 13:32 | If God is given glory in him, God will give him glory in himself, and will give him glory even now. | Moreover God will glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him without delay. | If God be glorified in him, God also will glorify him in himself; and immediately will he glorify him. |
John 13:33 | My dear children, I am only to be with you a little longer. Then you will be looking for me: and as I said to the Jews, so now I say to you, Where I am going you may not come. | Dear children, I am still with you a little longer. You will seek me, but, as I said to the Jews, `Where I am going you cannot come,' so for the present I say to you. | Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You shall seek me; and as I said to the Jews: Whither I go you cannot come; so I say to you now. |
John 13:34 | I give you a new law: Have love one for another; even as I have had love for you, so are you to have love one for another. | A new commandment I give you, to love one another; that as I have loved you, you also may love one another. | A new commandment I give unto you: That you love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another. |
John 13:35 | By this it will be clear to all men that you are my disciples, if you have love one for another. | It is by this that every one will know that you are my disciples if you love one another." | By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one for another. |
John 13:36 | Simon Peter said to him, Lord, where are you going? Jesus said in answer, Where I am going you may not come with me now, but you will come later. | "Master," inquired Simon Peter, "where are you going?" "Where I am going," replied Jesus, "you cannot be my follower now, but you shall be later." | Simon Peter saith to him: Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered: Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow hereafter. |
John 13:37 | Peter said to him, Why may I not come with you even now? I will give up my life for you. | "Master," asked Peter again, "why cannot I follow you now? I will lay down my life on your behalf. | Peter saith to him: Why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thee. |
John 13:38 | Jesus said in answer, Will you give up your life for me? Truly I say to you, Before the cry of the cock you will have said three times that you are not my disciple. | "You say you will lay down your life on my behalf!" said Jesus; "in most solemn truth I tell you that the cock will not crow before you have three times disowned me." | Jesus answered him: Wilt thou lay down thy life for me? Amen, amen I say to thee, the cock shall not crow, till thou deny me thrice. |
