John 9:1 | And when he went on his way, he saw a man blind from birth. | As He passed by, He saw a man who had been blind from his birth. | And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man who was blind from his birth. |
John 9:2 | And his disciples put a question to him, saying, Master, was it because of this man's sin, or the sin of his father and mother, that he has been blind from birth? | So His disciples asked Him, "Rabbi, who sinned this man or his parents that he was born blind?" | And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who sinned, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? |
John 9:3 | Jesus said in answer, It was not because of his sin, or because of his father's or mother's; it was so that the works of God might be seen openly in him. | "Neither he nor his parents sinned," answered Jesus, "but he was born blind in order that God's mercy might be openly shown in him. | Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. |
John 9:4 | While it is day we have to do the works of him who sent me: the night comes when no work may be done. | We must do the works of Him who sent me while there is daylight. Night is coming on, when no one can work. | I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh when no man can work. |
John 9:5 | As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. | When I am in the world, I am the Light of the world." | As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. |
John 9:6 | Having said these words, he put earth, mixed with water from his mouth, on the man's eyes, | After thus speaking, He spat on the ground, and then, kneading the dust and spittle into clay, He smeared the clay over the man's eyes and said to him, | When he had thus spoken, he spit on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, |
John 9:7 | And said to him, Go and make yourself clean in the bath of Siloam (the sense of the name is, Sent). So he went away and, after washing, came back able to see. | "Go and wash in the pool of Siloam" the name means `Sent.' So he went and washed his eyes, and returned able to see. | And said to him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went therefore, and washed, and came seeing. |
John 9:8 | Then the neighbours and others who had seen him before in the street, with his hand out for money, said, Is not this the man who got money from people? | His neighbours, therefore, and the other people to whom he had been a familiar object because he was a beggar, began asking, "Is not this the man who used to sit and beg?" | The neighbors therefore, and they who before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged? |
John 9:9 | Some said, It is he: others said, No, but he is like him. He said, I am he. | "Yes it is," replied some of them. "No it is not," said others, "but he is like him." His own statement was, "I am the man." | Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he. |
John 9:10 | So they said to him, How then were your eyes made open? | "How then were your eyes opened?" they asked. | Therefore they said to him, How were thy eyes opened? |
John 9:11 | His answer was: The man who is named Jesus put earth mixed with water on my eyes, and said to me, Go and make yourself clean in Siloam: so I went away and, after washing, am now able to see. | "He whose name is Jesus," he answered, "made clay and smeared my eyes with it, and then told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed and obtained sight." | He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus, made clay, and anointed my eyes, and said to me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight. |
John 9:12 | And they said to him, Where is he? His answer was: I have no knowledge. | "Where is he?" they inquired, but the man did not know. | Then said they to him, Where is he? He said, I know not. |
John 9:13 | They took him before the Pharisees this man who had been blind. | They brought him to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. | They brought to the Pharisees him that before was blind. |
John 9:14 | Now the day on which the earth was mixed by Jesus and the man's eyes were made open was the Sabbath. | Now the day on which Jesus made the clay and opened the man's eyes was the Sabbath. | And it was the sabbath when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes. |
John 9:15 | So the Pharisees put more questions to him about how his eyes had been made open. And he said to them, He put earth on my eyes, and I had a wash and am able to see. | So the Pharisees renewed their questioning as to how he had obtained his sight. "He put clay on my eyes," he replied, "and I washed, and now I can see." | Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said to them, He put clay upon my eyes, and I washed, and do see. |
John 9:16 | Then some of the Pharisees said, That man has not come from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath. Others said, How is it possible for a sinner to do such signs? So there was a division among them. | This led some of the Pharisees to say, "That man has not come from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath." "How is it possible for a bad man to do such miracles?" argued others. | Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not from God, because he keepeth not the sabbath. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them. |
John 9:17 | Again they said to the blind man, What have you to say about him for opening your eyes? And he said, He is a prophet. | And there was a division among them. So again they asked the once blind man, "What is your account of him? for he opened your eyes." "He is a Prophet," he replied. | They say to the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thy eyes? He said, He is a prophet. |
John 9:18 | Now the Jews had no belief in the statement that he had been blind and was now able to see, till they sent for the father and mother of the man whose eyes had been made open, | The Jews, however, did not believe the statement concerning him that he had been blind and had obtained his sight until they called his parents and asked them, | But the Jews did not believe concerning him that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight. |
John 9:19 | And put the question to them, saying, Is this your son, of whom you say that he was blind at birth? how is it then that he is now able to see? | "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How is it then that he can now see?" | And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see? |
John 9:20 | In answer his father and mother said, We are certain that this is our son and that he was blind at birth: | "We know," replied the parents, "that this is our son and that he was born blind; | His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind: |
John 9:21 | But how it is he is now able to see, or who made his eyes open, we are not able to say: put the question to him; he is old enough to give an answer for himself. | but how it is that he can now see or who has opened his eyes we do not know. Ask him himself; he is of full age; he himself will give his own account of it." | But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he will speak for himself. |
John 9:22 | They said this because of their fear of the Jews: for the Jews had come to an agreement that if any man said that Jesus was the Christ he would be put out of the Synagogue. | Such was their answer, because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already settled among themselves that if any one should acknowledge Jesus as the Christ, he should be excluded from the synagogue. | These words his parents spoke, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man confessed that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue. |
John 9:23 | That was the reason why they said, He is old enough; put the question to him. | That was why his parents said, "He is of full age: ask him himself." | Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him. |
John 9:24 | So they sent a second time for the man who had been blind and they said to him, Give glory to God: it is clear to us that this man is a sinner. | A second time therefore they called the man who had been blind, and said, "Give God the praise: we know that that man is a sinner." | Then again they called the man that was blind, and said to him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner. |
John 9:25 | He said in answer, I have no knowledge if he is a sinner or not, but one thing I am certain about; I was blind, and now I see. | "Whether he is a sinner or not, I do not know," he replied; "one thing I know that I was once blind and that now I can see." | He answered and said, Whether he is a sinner, I know not: one thing I know, that whereas I was blind, now I see. |
John 9:26 | Then they said to him, What did he do to you? how did he give you the use of your eyes? | "What did he do to you?" they asked; "how did he open your eyes?" | Then they said to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thy eyes? |
John 9:27 | His answer was: I have said it before, but your ears were shut: why would you have me say it again? is it your desire to become his disciples? | "I have told you already," he replied, "and you did not listen to me. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also mean to be disciples of his?" | He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: Why would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples? |
John 9:28 | And they were angry with him and said, You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. | Then they railed at him, and said, "You are that man's disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. | Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are the disciples of Moses. |
John 9:29 | We are certain that God gave his word to Moses: but as for this man, we have no knowledge where he comes from. | We know that God spoke to Moses; but as for this fellow we do not know where he comes from." | We know that God spoke to Moses: as for this man, we know not whence he is. |
John 9:30 | The man said in answer, Why, here is a strange thing! You have no knowledge where he comes from though he gave me the use of my eyes. | "Why, this is marvellous!" the man replied; "you do not know where he comes from, and yet he has opened my eyes! | The man answered and said to them, Why, herein is a marvelous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened my eyes. |
John 9:31 | We have knowledge that God does not give ear to sinners, but if any man is a worshipper of God and does his pleasure, to him God's ears are open. | We know that God does not listen to bad people, but that if any one is a God-fearing man and obeys Him, to him He listens. | Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man is a worshiper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth. |
John 9:32 | In all the years nobody has ever before seen the eyes of a man blind from birth made open. | From the beginning of the world such a thing was never heard of as that any one should open the eyes of a man blind from his birth. | Since the world began hath it not been heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind. |
John 9:33 | If this man did not come from God he would be unable to do anything. | Had that man not come from God, he could have done nothing." | If this man were not from God, he could do nothing. |
John 9:34 | Their answer was: You came to birth through sin; do you make yourself our teacher? And they put him out of the Synagogue. | "You," they replied, "were wholly begotten and born in sin, and do *you* teach *us*?" And they put him out of the synagogue. | They answered and said to him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? and they cast him out. |
John 9:35 | It came to the ears of Jesus that they had put him out, and meeting him he said, Have you faith in the Son of man? | Jesus heard that they had done this. So having found him, He asked him, "Do you believe in the Son of God?" | Jesus heard that they had cast him out: and when he had found him, he said to him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? |
John 9:36 | He said in answer, And who is he, Lord? Say, so that I may have faith in him. | "Who is He, Sir?" replied the man. "Tell me, so that I may believe in Him." | He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I may believe on him? |
John 9:37 | Jesus said to him, You have seen him; it is he who is talking to you. | "You have seen Him," said Jesus; "and not only so: He is now speaking to you." | And Jesus said to him, thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee. |
John 9:38 | And he said, Lord, I have faith. And he gave him worship. | "I believe, Sir," he said. And he threw himself at His feet. | And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshiped him. |
John 9:39 | And Jesus said, I came into this world to be a judge, so that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind. | "I came into this world," said Jesus, "to judge men, that those who do not see may see, and that those who do see may become blind." | And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they who see not, may see; and that they who see, may be made blind. |
John 9:40 | These words came to the ears of the Pharisees who were with him and they said to him, Are we, then, blind? | These words were heard by those of the Pharisees who were present, and they asked Him, "Are *we* also blind?" | And some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these words, and said to him, Are we blind also? |
John 9:41 | Jesus said to them, If you were blind you would have no sin: but now that you say, We see; your sin is there still. | "If you were blind," answered Jesus, "you would have no sin; but as a matter of fact you boast that you see. So your sin remains!" | Jesus said to them, If ye were blind, ye would have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth. |
