| James 2:1 | My brothers, if you have the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ of glory, do not take a man's position into account. | My brethren, you must not make distinctions between one man and another while you are striving to maintain faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, who is our glory. | My brothers, don't hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, [the Lord] of glory, with respect of persons. |
| James 2:2 | For if a man comes into your Synagogue in fair clothing and with a gold ring, and a poor man comes in with dirty clothing, | For suppose a man comes into one of your meetings wearing gold rings and fine clothes, and there also comes in a poor man wearing shabby clothes, | For if a man with a gold ring, in fine clothing, comes into your assembly, and there come in also a poor man in filthy clothing; |
| James 2:3 | And you do honour to the man in fair clothing and say, Come here and take this good place; and you say to the poor man, Take up your position there, or be seated at my feet; | and you pay court to the one who wears the fine clothes, and say, "Sit here; this is a good place;" while to the poor man you say, "Stand there, or sit on the floor at my feet;" | and you pay special attention to him who wears the fine clothing, and say, "Sit here in a good place;" and you tell the poor man, "Stand there," or "Sit by my footstool;" |
| James 2:4 | Is there not a division in your minds? have you not become judges with evil thoughts? | is it not plain that in your hearts you have little faith, seeing that you have become judges full of wrong thoughts? | haven't you shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? |
| James 2:5 | Give ear, my dear brothers; are not those who are poor in the things of this world marked out by God to have faith as their wealth, and for their heritage the kingdom which he has said he will give to those who have love for him? | Listen, my dearly-loved brethren. Has not God chosen those whom the world regards as poor to be rich in faith and heirs of the Kingdom which He has promised to those that love Him? | Listen, my beloved brothers. Didn't God choose those who are poor in this world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he promised to those who love him? |
| James 2:6 | But you have put the poor man to shame. Are not the men of wealth rulers over you? do they not take you by force before their judges? | But *you* have put dishonour upon the poor man. Yet is it not the rich who grind you down? Are not they the very people who drag you into the Law courts? | But you have dishonored the poor man. Don't the rich oppress you, and personally drag you before the courts? |
| James 2:7 | Do they not say evil of the holy name which was given to you? | and the very people who speak evil of the noble Name by which you are called? | Don't they blaspheme the honorable name by which you are called? |
| James 2:8 | But if you keep the greatest law of all, as it is given in the holy Writings, Have love for your neighbour as for yourself, you do well: | If, however, you are keeping the Law as supreme, in obedience to the Commandment which says "You are to love your fellow man just as you love yourself," you are acting rightly. | However, if you fulfill the royal law, according to the Scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself," you do well. |
| James 2:9 | But if you take a man's position into account, you do evil, and are judged as evil-doers by the law. | But if you are making distinctions between one man and another, you are guilty of sin, and are convicted by the Law as offenders. | But if you show partiality, you commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors. |
| James 2:10 | For anyone who keeps all the law, but makes a slip in one point, is judged to have gone against it all. | A man who has kept the Law as a whole, but has failed to keep some one command, has become guilty of violating all. | For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he has become guilty of all. |
| James 2:11 | For he who said, Do not be untrue in married life, is the same who said, Put no man to death. Now if you are not untrue in married life, but you put a man to death, the law is broken. | For He who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not commit murder," and if you are a murderer, although not an adulterer, you have become an offender against the Law. | For he who said, "Do not commit adultery," said also, "Do not commit murder." Now if you do not commit adultery, but murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. |
| James 2:12 | Let your words and your acts be those of men who are to be judged by the law which makes free. | Speak and act as those should who are expecting to be judged by the Law of freedom. | So speak, and so do, as men who are to be judged by a law of freedom. |
| James 2:13 | For the man who has had no mercy will be judged without mercy, but mercy takes pride in overcoming judging. | For he who shows no mercy will have judgement given against him without mercy; but mercy triumphs over judgement. | For judgment is without mercy to him who has showed no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment. |
| James 2:14 | What use is it, my brothers, for a man to say that he has faith, if he does nothing? will such a faith give him salvation? | What good is it, my brethren, if a man professes to have faith, and yet his actions do not correspond? Can such faith save him? | What good is it, my brothers, if a man says he has faith, but has no works? Can that faith save him? |
| James 2:15 | If a brother or a sister is without clothing and in need of the day's food, | Suppose a Christian brother or sister is poorly clad or lacks daily food, | And if a brother or sister is naked and in lack of daily food, |
| James 2:16 | And one of you says to them, Go in peace, be warm and full of food; but you do not give them the things of which their bodies have need, what profit is there in this? | and one of you says to them, "I wish you well; keep yourselves warm and well fed," and yet you do not give them what they need; what is the use of that? | and one of you tells them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled;" and yet you didn't give them the things the body needs, what good is it? |
| James 2:17 | Even so faith without works is dead. | So also faith, if it is unaccompanied by obedience, has no life in it so long as it stands alone. | Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself. |
| James 2:18 | But a man may say, You have faith and I have works; let me see your faith without your works, and I will make my faith clear to you by my works. | Nay, some one will say, "You have faith, I have actions: prove to me your faith apart from corresponding actions and I will prove mine to you by my actions. | Yes, a man will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without your works, and I by my works will show you my faith. |
| James 2:19 | You have the belief that God is one, and you do well: the evil spirits have the same belief, shaking with fear. | You believe that God is one, and you are quite right: evil spirits also believe this, and shudder." | You believe that God is one. You do well. The demons also believe, and shudder. |
| James 2:20 | Do you not see, O foolish man, that faith without works is of no use? | But, idle boaster, are you willing to be taught how it is that faith apart from obedience is worthless? Take the case of Abraham our forefather. | But do you want to know, vain man, that faith apart from works is dead? |
| James 2:21 | Was not the righteousness of Abraham our father judged by his works, when he made an offering of Isaac his son on the altar? | Was it, or was it not, because of his actions that he was declared to be righteous as the result of his having offered up his son Isaac upon the altar? | Wasn't Abraham, our father, justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? |
| James 2:22 | You see that his faith was helping his works and was made complete by them; | You notice that his faith was co-operating with his actions, and that by his actions his faith was perfected; | You see that faith worked with his works, and by works faith was perfected; |
| James 2:23 | And the holy Writings were put into effect which said, And Abraham had faith in God and it was put to his account as righteousness; and he was named the friend of God. | and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "And Abraham believed God, and his faith was placed to his credit as righteousness," and he received the name of `God's friend.' | and the scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him as righteousness;" and he was called the friend of God. |

| James 2:26 | For as the body without the spirit is dead even so faith without works is dead. | For just as a human body without a spirit is lifeless, so also faith is lifeless if it is unaccompanied by obedience. | For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead. |
