John 19:1 | Then Pilate took Jesus and had him whipped with cords. | Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. | Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and flogged him. |
John 19:2 | And the men of the army made a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they put a purple robe on him. | And the soldiers, twisting twigs of thorn into a wreath, put it on His head, and threw round Him a crimson cloak. | The soldiers twisted thorns into a crown, and put it on his head, and dressed him in a purple garment. |
John 19:3 | And they kept coming and saying, Long life to the King of the Jews! And they gave him blows with their hands. | Then they began to march up to Him, saying in a mocking voice, "Hail King of the Jews!" And they struck Him with the palms of their hands. | They said, "Hail, King of the Jews!" and they struck him with their hands. |
John 19:4 | And Pilate went out again and said to them, See, I let him come out to you to make it clear to you that I see no wrong in him. | Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews, "See, I am bringing him out to you to let you clearly understand that I find no crime in him." | Then Pilate went out again, and said to them, "Behold, I bring him out to you, that you may know that I find no basis for a charge against him." |
John 19:5 | Then Jesus came out with the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, Here is the man! | So Jesus came out, wearing the wreath of thorns and the crimson cloak. And Pilate said to them, "See, there is the man." | Jesus therefore came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment. Pilate said to them, "Behold, the man!" |
John 19:6 | So when the chief priests and the police saw him they gave a loud cry, To the cross! to the cross! Pilate said to them, Take him yourselves and put him on the cross: I see no crime in him. | As soon then as the High Priests and the officers saw Him, they shouted "To the cross! To the cross!" "Take him yourselves and crucify him," said Pilate; "for I, at any rate, find no crime in him." | When therefore the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, saying, "Crucify! Crucify!" Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves, and crucify him, for I find no basis for a charge against him." |
John 19:7 | And the Jews made answer, We have a law, and by that law it is right for him to be put to death because he said he was the Son of God. | "We," replied the Jews, "have a Law, and in accordance with that Law he ought to die, for having claimed to be the Son of God." | The Jews answered him, "We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God." |
John 19:8 | When this saying came to Pilate's ears his fear became greater; | More alarmed than ever, Pilate no sooner heard these words than he re-entered the Praetorium and began to question Jesus. | When therefore Pilate heard this saying, he was more afraid. |
John 19:9 | And he went again into the Praetorium and said to Jesus, Where do you come from? But Jesus gave him no answer. | "What is your origin?" he asked. But Jesus gave him no answer. | He entered into the Praetorium again, and said to Jesus, "Where are you from?" But Jesus gave him no answer. |
John 19:10 | Then Pilate said to him, You say nothing to me? is it not clear to you that I have power to let you go free and power to put you to death on the cross? | "Do you refuse to speak even to me?" asked Pilate; "do you not know that I have it in my power either to release you or to crucify you?" | Pilate therefore said to him, "Aren't you speaking to me? Don't you know that I have power to release you, and have power to crucify you?" |
John 19:11 | Jesus gave this answer: You would have no power at all over me if it was not given to you by God; so that he who gave me up to you has the greater sin. | "You would have had no power whatever over me," replied Jesus, "had it not been granted you from above. On that account he who has delivered me up to you is more guilty than you are." | Jesus answered, "You would have no power at all against me, unless it were given to you from above. Therefore he who delivered me to you has greater sin." |
John 19:12 | Hearing this, Pilate had a desire to let him go free, but the Jews said in a loud voice, If you let this man go, you are not Caesar's friend: everyone who makes himself a king goes against Caesar. | Upon receiving this answer, Pilate was for releasing Him. But the Jews kept shouting, "If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar's. Every one who sets himself up as king declares himself a rebel against Caesar." | At this, Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, saying, "If you release this man, you aren't Caesar's friend! Everyone who makes himself a king speaks against Caesar!" |
John 19:13 | So when these words came to Pilate's ear, he took Jesus out, seating himself in the judge's seat in a place named in Hebrew, Gabbatha, or the Stone Floor. | On hearing this, Pilate brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judge's seat in a place called the Pavement or in Hebrew, Gabbatha. | When Pilate therefore heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called "The Pavement," but in Hebrew, "Gabbatha." |
John 19:14 | (It was the day when they made ready for the Passover; and it was about the sixth hour.) And he said to the Jews, There is your King! | It was the day of Preparation for the Passover, about six o'clock in the morning. Then he said to the Jews, "There is your king!" | Now it was the Preparation of the Passover, at about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, "Behold, your King!" |
John 19:15 | Then they gave a loud cry, Away with him! away with him! to the cross! Pilate said to them, Am I to put your King to death on the cross? The chief priests said in answer, We have no king but Caesar. | This caused a storm of outcries, "Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!" "Am I to crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king, except Caesar," answered the High Priests. | They cried out, "Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar!" |
John 19:16 | So then he gave him up to them to be put to death on the cross. And they took Jesus away; | Then Pilate gave Him up to them to be crucified. Accordingly they took Jesus; | Then therefore he delivered him to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus and led him away. |
John 19:17 | And he went out with his cross on him to the place which is named Dead Man's Head (in Hebrew, Golgotha): | and He went out carrying His own cross, to the place called Skull-place or, in Hebrew, Golgotha | He went out, bearing his cross, to the place called "The place of a skull," which is called in Hebrew, "Golgotha," |
John 19:18 | Where they put him on the cross with two others, one on this side and one on that, and Jesus in the middle. | where they nailed Him to a cross, and two others at the same time, one on each side and Jesus in the middle. | where they crucified him, and with him two others, on either side one, and Jesus in the middle. |
John 19:19 | And Pilate put on the cross a statement in writing. The writing was: JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS. | And Pilate wrote a notice and had it fastened to the top of the cross. It ran thus: JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS. | Pilate wrote a title also, and put it on the cross. There was written, "JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS." |
John 19:20 | The writing was seen by a number of the Jews, for the place where Jesus was put to death on the cross was near the town; and the writing was in Hebrew and Latin and Greek. | Many of the Jews read this notice, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the notice was in three languages Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. | Therefore many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek. |
John 19:21 | Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, Do not put, The King of the Jews, but, He said, I am the King of the Jews. | This led the Jewish High Priests to remonstrate with Pilate. "You should not write `The King of the Jews,'" they said, "but that he claimed to be King of the Jews." | The chief priests of the Jews therefore said to Pilate, "Don't write, 'The King of the Jews,' but that, 'he said, I am King of the Jews.'" |
John 19:22 | But Pilate made answer, What I have put in writing will not be changed. | "What I have written I have written," was Pilate's answer. | Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written." |
John 19:23 | And when Jesus was nailed to the cross, the men of the army took his clothing, and made a division of it into four parts, to every man a part, and they took his coat: now the coat was without a join, made out of one bit of cloth. | So the soldiers, as soon as they had crucified Jesus, took His garments, including His tunic, and divided them into four parts one part for each soldier. The tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. | Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also the coat. Now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. |
John 19:24 | So they said among themselves, Let this not be cut up, but let us put it to the decision of chance and see who gets it. (They did this so that the Writings might come true, which say, They made a distribution of my clothing among them, and my coat they put to the decision of chance.) This was what the men of the army did. | So they said to one another, "Do not let us tear it. Let us draw lots for it." This happened that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says, "They shared my garments among them, and drew lots for my clothing." That was just what the soldiers did. | Then they said to one another, "Let's not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it will be," that the scripture might be fulfilled, which says, "They parted my garments among them, For my cloak they cast lots." Therefore the soldiers did these things. |
John 19:25 | Now by the side of the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister Mary, the wife of Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene. | Now standing close to the cross of Jesus were His mother and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. | But there were standing by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. |
John 19:26 | So when Jesus saw his mother and the disciple who was dear to him, he said to his mother, Mother, there is your son! | So Jesus, seeing His mother, and seeing the disciple whom He loved standing near, said to His mother, "Behold, your son!" | Therefore when Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing there, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold your son!" |
John 19:27 | Then he said to the disciple, There is your mother! And from that hour the disciple took her to his house. | Then He said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that time the disciple received her into his own home. | Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" From that hour, the disciple took her to his own home. |
John 19:28 | After this, being conscious that all things had now been done so that the Writings might come true, Jesus said, Give me water. | After this, Jesus, knowing that everything was now brought to an end, said that the Scripture might be fulfilled, "I am thirsty." | After this, Jesus, seeing that all things were now finished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, said, "I am thirsty." |
John 19:29 | Now there was a vessel ready, full of bitter wine, and they put a sponge full of it on a stick and put it to his mouth. | There was a jar of wine standing there. With this wine they filled a sponge, put it on the end of a stalk of hyssop, and lifted it to His mouth. | Now a vessel full of vinegar was set there; so they put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop, and brought it to his mouth. |
John 19:30 | So when Jesus had taken the wine he said, All is done. And with his head bent he gave up his spirit. | As soon as Jesus had taken the wine, He said, "It is finished." And then, bowing His head, He yielded up His spirit. | When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, "It is finished." He bowed his head, and gave up his spirit. |
John 19:31 | Now it was the day of getting ready for the Passover, and so that the bodies might not be on the cross on the Sabbath (because the day of that Sabbath was a great day), the Jews made a request to Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. | Meanwhile the Jews, because it was the day of Preparation for the Passover, and in order that the bodies might not remain on the crosses during the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was one of special solemnity), requested Pilate to have the legs of the dying men broken, and the bodies removed. | Therefore the Jews, because it was the Preparation, so that the bodies wouldn't remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a special one), asked of Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. |
John 19:32 | So the men of the army came, and the legs of the first were broken and then of the other who was put to death on the cross with Jesus: | Accordingly the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and also of the other who had been crucified with Jesus. | Therefore the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who was crucified with him; |
John 19:33 | But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was dead by this time, and so his legs were not broken; | Then they came to Jesus Himself: but when they saw that He was already dead, they refrained from breaking His legs. | but when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was already dead, they didn't break his legs. |
John 19:34 | But one of the men made a wound in his side with a spear, and straight away there came out blood and water. | One of the soldiers, however, made a thrust at His side with a lance, and immediately blood and water flowed out. | However one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. |
John 19:35 | And he who saw it has given witness (and his witness is true; he is certain that what he says is true) so that you may have belief. | This statement is the testimony of an eye-witness, and it is true. He knows that he is telling the truth in order that you also may believe. | He who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, that you also may believe. |
John 19:36 | These things came about so that the Writings might be true, No bone of his body will be broken. | For all this took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled which declares, "Not one of His bones shall be broken." | For these things happened, that the scripture might be fulfilled, "A bone of him will not be broken." |
John 19:37 | And again another verse says, They will see him who was wounded by their spears. | And again another Scripture says, "They shall look on Him whom they have pierced." | Again another scripture says, "They will look on him whom they pierced." |
John 19:38 | After these things, Joseph of Arimathaea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, made a request to Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate said he might do so. So he went and took away his body. | After this, Joseph of Arimathaea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but for fear of the Jews a secret disciple, asked Pilate's permission to carry away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him leave. So he came and removed the body. | After these things, Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked of Pilate that he might take away Jesus' body. Pilate gave him permission. He came therefore, and took away his body. |
John 19:39 | And Nicodemus came (he who had first come to Jesus by night) with a roll of myrrh and aloes mixed, about a hundred pounds. | Nicodemus too he who at first had visited Jesus by night came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, in weight about seventy or eighty pounds. | Nicodemus also came, he who at first came to Jesus by night, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred Roman pounds. |
John 19:40 | Then they took the body of Jesus, folding linen about it with the spices, as is the way of the Jews when they put the dead to rest. | Taking down the body they wrapped it in linen cloths along with the spices, in accordance with the Jewish mode of preparing for burial. | So they took Jesus' body, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. |
John 19:41 | Now there was a garden near the cross, and in the garden a new place for the dead in which no man had ever been put. | There was a garden at the place where Jesus had been crucified, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had yet been buried. | Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden. In the garden a new tomb in which no man had ever yet been laid. |
John 19:42 | So they put Jesus there, because it was the Jews' day of getting ready for the Passover, and the place was near. | Therefore, because it was the day of Preparation for the Jewish Passover, and the tomb was close at hand, they put Jesus there. | Then because of the Jews' Preparation (for the tomb was near at hand) they laid Jesus there. |
