John 2:1 | On the third day two people were going to be married at Cana in Galilee. The mother of Jesus was there: | Two days later there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there, | The third day, there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee. Jesus' mother was there. |
John 2:2 | And Jesus with his disciples came as guests. | and Jesus also was invited and His disciples. | Jesus also was invited, with his disciples, to the marriage. |
John 2:3 | When they had not enough wine, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. | Now the wine ran short; whereupon the mother of Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine." | When the wine ran out, Jesus' Mother said to him, "They have no wine." |
John 2:4 | Jesus said to her, Woman, this is not your business; my time is still to come. | "Leave the matter in my hands," He replied; "the time for me to act has not yet come." | Jesus said to her, "Woman, what does that have to do with you and me? My hour has not yet come." |
John 2:5 | His mother said to the servants, Whatever he says to you, do it. | His mother said to the attendants, "Whatever he tells you to do, do it." | His mother said to the servants, "Whatever he says to you, do it." |
John 2:6 | Now six pots of stone, every one taking two or three firkins of water, were placed there for the purpose of washing, as is the way of the Jews. | Now there were six stone jars standing there (in accordance with the Jewish regulations for purification), each large enough to hold twenty gallons or more. | Now there were six water pots of stone set there after the Jews' manner of purifying, containing two or three metretes apiece. |
John 2:7 | Jesus said to the servants, Make the pots full of water. And they made them full to the top. | Jesus said to the attendants, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them to the brim. | Jesus said to them, "Fill the water pots with water." They filled them up to the brim. |
John 2:8 | Then he said to them, Now take some, and give it to the master of the feast. So they took it to him. | Then He said, "Now, take some out, and carry it to the President of the feast." | He said to them, "Now draw some out, and take it to the ruler of the feast." They took it. |
John 2:9 | After tasting the water which had now become wine, the master of the feast (having no idea where it came from, though it was clear to the servants who took the water out) sent for the newly-married man, | So they carried some to him. And no sooner had the President tasted the water now turned into wine, than not knowing where it came from, though the attendants who had drawn the water knew he called to the bridegroom | When the ruler of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and didn't know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the ruler of the feast called the bridegroom, |
John 2:10 | And said to him, Every man first puts out his best wine and when all have had enough he puts out what is not so good; but you have kept the good wine till now. | and said to him, "It is usual to put on the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then that which is inferior. But you have kept the good wine till now." | and said to him, "Everyone serves the good wine first, and when the guests have drunk freely, then that which is worse. You have kept the good wine until now!" |
John 2:11 | This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee and let his glory be seen openly; and his disciples put their faith in him. | This, the first of His miracles, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee, and thus displayed His glorious power; and His disciples believed in Him. | This beginning of his signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory. His disciples believed in him. |
John 2:12 | After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples, and they were there not more than two or three days. | Afterwards He went down to Capernaum He, and His mother, and His brothers, and His disciples; and they made a short stay there. | After this, he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, his brothers, and his disciples; and there they stayed not many days. |
John 2:13 | The time of the Passover of the Jews was near and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. | But the Jewish Passover was approaching, and for this Jesus went up to Jerusalem. | The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. |
John 2:14 | And there in the Temple he saw men trading in oxen and sheep and doves, and he saw the changers of money in their seats: | And He found in the Temple the dealers in cattle and sheep and in pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. | He found in the temple those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, and the changers of money sitting. |
John 2:15 | And he made a whip of small cords and put them all out of the Temple, with the sheep and the oxen, sending in all directions the small money of the changers and overturning their tables; | So He plaited a whip of rushes, and drove all both sheep and bullocks out of the Temple. The small coin of the brokers He upset on the ground and overturned their tables. | He made a whip of cords, and threw all out of the temple, both the sheep and the oxen; and he poured out the changers' money, and overthrew their tables. |
John 2:16 | And to those who were trading in doves he said, Take these things away; do not make my Father's house a market. | And to the pigeon-dealers He said, "Take these things away. Do not turn my Father's house into a market." | To those who sold the doves, he said, "Take these things out of here! Don't make my Father's house a marketplace!" |
John 2:17 | And it came to the minds of the disciples that the Writings say, I am on fire with passion for your house. | This recalled to His disciples the words of Scripture, "My zeal for Thy House will consume me." | His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for your house will eat me up." |
John 2:18 | Then the Jews put this question to him: What sign of authority have you to give us, seeing that you do these things? | So the Jews asked Him, "What proof of your authority do you exhibit to us, seeing that you do these things?" | The Jews therefore answered him, "What sign do you show to us, seeing that you do these things?" |
John 2:19 | And Jesus said to them, Send destruction on this Temple and I will put it up again in three days. | "Demolish this Sanctuary," said Jesus, "and in three days I will rebuild it." | Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." |
John 2:20 | The Jews said, The building of this Temple took forty-six years; and you will put it up in three days! | "It has taken forty-six years," replied the Jews, "to build this Sanctuary, and will you rebuild it in three days?" | The Jews therefore said, "Forty-six years was this temple in building, and will you raise it up in three days?" |
John 2:21 | But his words were about that holy building which was his body. | But He was speaking of the Sanctuary of His body. | But he spoke of the temple of his body. |
John 2:22 | So when he had come back again from the dead, the memory of these words came back to the disciples, and they had faith in the holy Writings and in the word which Jesus had said. | When however He had risen from among the dead, His disciples recollected that He had said this; and they believed the Scripture and the teaching which Jesus had given them. | When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he said this, and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said. |
John 2:23 | Now while he was in Jerusalem at the feast of the Passover, a great number of people came to have faith in his name, after seeing the signs which he did. | Now when He was in Jerusalem, at the Festival of the Passover, many became believers in Him through watching the miracles He performed. | Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in his name, observing his signs which he did. |
John 2:24 | But Jesus did not have faith in them, because he had knowledge of them all. | But for His part, Jesus did not trust Himself to them, because He knew them all, | But Jesus didn't trust himself to them, because he knew all people, |
John 2:25 | He had no need for any witness about man; for he himself had knowledge of what was in man. | and did not need any one's testimony concerning a man, for He of Himself knew what was in the man. | and because he didn't need for anyone to testify concerning man; for he himself knew what was in man. |
