John 5:1 | After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. | After this there was a Festival of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. | After these things, there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. |
John 5:2 | Now in Jerusalem near the sheep-market there is a public bath which in Hebrew is named Beth-zatha. It has five doorways. | Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, called in Hebrew `Bethesda.' It has five arcades. | Now in Jerusalem by the sheep gate, there is a pool, which is called in Hebrew, "Bethesda," having five porches. |
John 5:3 | In these doorways there were a great number of people with different diseases: some unable to see, some without the power of walking, some with wasted bodies. | In these there used to lie a great number of sick persons, and of people who were blind or lame or paralyzed. | In these lay a great multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, or paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water; |
John 5:4 | [] | [] | for an angel of the Lord went down at certain times into the pool, and stirred up the water. Whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was made whole of whatever disease he was afflicted with. |
John 5:5 | One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. | And there was one man there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. | A certain man was there, who had been sick for thirty-eight years. |
John 5:6 | When Jesus saw him there on the floor it was clear to him that he had been now a long time in that condition, and so he said to the man, Is it your desire to get well? | Jesus saw him lying there, and knowing that he had been a long time in that condition, He asked him, "Do you wish to have health and strength?" | When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had been sick for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to be made well?" |
John 5:7 | The ill man said in answer, Sir, I have nobody to put me into the bath when the water is moving; and while I am on the way down some other person gets in before me. | "Sir," replied the sufferer, "I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is moved; but while I am coming some one else steps down before me." | The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I'm coming, another steps down before me." |
John 5:8 | Jesus said to him, Get up, take your bed and go. | "Rise," said Jesus, "take up your mat and walk." | Jesus said to him, "Arise, take up your mat, and walk." |
John 5:9 | And the man became well straight away, and took up his bed and went. Now that day was the Sabbath. | Instantly the man was restored to perfect health, and he took up his mat and began to walk. | Immediately, the man was made well, and took up his mat and walked. Now it was the Sabbath on that day. |
John 5:10 | So the Jews said to the man who had been made well, It is the Sabbath; and it is against the law for you to take up your bed. | That day was a Sabbath. So the Jews said to the man who had been cured, "It is the Sabbath: you must not carry your mat." | So the Jews said to him who was cured, "It is the Sabbath. It is not lawful for you to carry your mat." |
John 5:11 | He said to them, But he who made me well, said to me, Take up your bed and go. | "He who cured me," he replied, "said to me, `Take up your mat and walk.'" | He answered them, "He who made me well, the same said to me, 'Take up your mat, and walk.'" |
John 5:12 | Then they put to him the question: Who is the man who said to you, Take it up and go? | "Who is it," they asked, "that said to you, `Take up your mat and walk'?" | Then they asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Take up your mat, and walk'?" |
John 5:13 | Now he who had been made well had no knowledge who it was, Jesus having gone away because of the number of people who were in that place. | But the man who had been cured did not know who it was; for Jesus had passed out unnoticed, there being a crowd in the place. | But he who was healed didn't know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a crowd being in the place. |
John 5:14 | After a time Jesus came across him in the Temple and said to him, See, you are well and strong; do no more sin for fear a worse thing comes to you. | Afterwards Jesus found him in the Temple and said to him, "You are now restored to health. Do not sin any more, or a worse thing may befall you." | Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, "Behold, you are made well. Sin no more, so that nothing worse happens to you." |
John 5:15 | The man went away and said to the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. | The man went and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had restored him to health; | The man went away, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. |
John 5:16 | And for this reason the Jews were turned against Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. | and on this account the Jews began to persecute Jesus because He did these things on the Sabbath. | For this cause the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill him, because he did these things on the Sabbath. |
John 5:17 | But his answer was: My Father is still working even now, and so I am working. | His reply to their accusation was, "My Father works unceasingly, and so do I." | But Jesus answered them, "My Father is still working, so I am working, too." |
John 5:18 | For this cause the Jews had an even greater desire to put Jesus to death, because not only did he not keep the Sabbath but he said God was his Father, so making himself equal with God. | On this account then the Jews were all the more eager to put Him to death because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also spoke of God as being in a special sense His Father, thus putting Himself on a level with God. | For this cause therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only broke the Sabbath, but also called God his own Father, making himself equal with God. |
John 5:19 | So Jesus made answer and said, Truly I say to you, The Son is not able to do anything himself; he is able to do only what he sees the Father doing; whatever the Father does the Son does it in the same way. | "In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that the Son can do nothing of Himself He can only do what He sees the Father doing; for whatever He does, that the Son does in like manner. | Jesus therefore answered them, "Most assuredly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing of himself, but what he sees the Father doing. For whatever things he does, these the Son also does likewise. |
John 5:20 | For the Father has love for the Son and lets him see everything which he does: and he will let him see greater works than these so that you may be full of wonder. | For the Father loves the Son and reveals to Him all that He Himself is doing. And greater deeds than these will He reveal to Him, in order that you may wonder. | For the Father loves the Son, and shows him all things that he himself does. He will show him greater works than these, that you may marvel. |
John 5:21 | In the same way, as the Father gives life to the dead, even so the Son gives life to those to whom he is pleased to give it. | For just as the Father awakens the dead and gives them life, so the Son also gives life to whom He wills. | For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom he desires. |
John 5:22 | The Father is not the judge of men, but he has given all decisions into the hands of the Son; | The Father indeed does not judge any one, but He has entrusted all judgement to the Son, | For neither does the Father judge any man, but he has given all judgment to the Son, |
John 5:23 | So that all men may give honour to the Son even as they give honour to the Father. He who gives no honour to the Son gives no honour to the Father who sent him. | that all may honour the Son even as they honour the Father. The man who withholds honour from the Son withholds honour from the Father who sent Him. | that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who doesn't honor the Son doesn't honor the Father who sent him. |
John 5:24 | Truly I say to you, The man whose ears are open to my word and who has faith in him who sent me, has eternal life; he will not be judged, but has come from death into life. | "In most solemn truth I tell you that he who listens to my teaching and believes Him who sent me, has the Life of the Ages, and does not come under judgement, but has passed over out of death into Life. | Most assuredly I tell you, he who hears my word, and believes him who sent me, has eternal life, and doesn't come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. |
John 5:25 | Truly I say to you, The time is coming, it has even now come, when the voice of the Son of God will come to the ears of the dead, and those hearing it will have life. | "In most solemn truth I tell you that a time is coming nay, has already come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear it will live. | Most assuredly, I tell you, the hour comes, and now is, when the dead will hear the Son of God's voice; and those who hear will live. |
John 5:26 | For even as the Father has life in himself, so he has given to the Son to have life in himself. | For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He has also given to the Son to have life in Himself. | For as the Father has life in himself, even so he gave to the Son also to have life in himself. |
John 5:27 | And he has given him authority to be judge because he is the Son of man. | And He has conferred on Him authority to act as Judge, because He is the Son of Man. | He also gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man. |
John 5:28 | Do not be surprised at this: for the time is coming when his voice will come to all who are in the place of the dead, | Wonder not at this. For a time is coming when all who are in the graves will hear His voice and will come forth | Don't marvel at this, for the hour comes, in which all that are in the tombs will hear his voice, |
John 5:29 | And they will come out; those who have done good, into the new life; and those who have done evil, to be judged. | they who have done what is right to the resurrection of Life, and they whose actions have been evil to the resurrection of judgement. | and will come forth; those who have done good, to the resurrection of life; and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment. |
John 5:30 | Of myself I am unable to do anything: as the voice comes to me so I give a decision: and my decision is right because I have no desire to do what is pleasing to myself, but only what is pleasing to him who sent me. | "I can of my own self do nothing. As I am bidden, so I judge; and mine is a just judgement, because it is not my own will that guides me, but the will of Him who sent me. | I can of myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is righteous; because I don't seek my own will, but the will of my Father who sent me. |
John 5:31 | If I gave witness about myself, my witness would not be true. | "If I give testimony concerning myself, my testimony cannot be accepted. | "If I testify about myself, my witness is not valid. |
John 5:32 | There is another who gives witness about me and I am certain that the witness he gives about me is true. | There is Another who gives testimony concerning me, and I know that the testimony is true which He offers concerning me. | It is another who testifies about me. I know that the testimony which he testifies about me is true. |
John 5:33 | You sent to John and he gave true witness. | "You sent to John, and he both was and still is a witness to the truth. | You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth. |
John 5:34 | But I have no need of a man's witness: I only say these things so that you may have salvation. | But the testimony on my behalf which I accept is not from man; though I say all this in order that you may be saved. | But the testimony which I receive is not from man. However, I say these things that you may be saved. |
John 5:35 | He was a burning and shining light, and for a time you were ready to be happy in his light. | He was the lamp that burned and shone, and for a time you were willing to be gladdened by his light. | He was the lamp that burns and shines, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. |
John 5:36 | But the witness which I have is greater than that of John: the work which the Father has given me to do, the very work which I am now doing, is a witness that the Father has sent me. | "But the testimony which I have is weightier than that of John; for the work the Father has assigned to me for me to bring it to completion the very work which I am doing affords testimony concerning me that the Father has sent me. | But the testimony which I have is greater than that of John, for the works which the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I do, testify about me, that the Father has sent me. |
John 5:37 | And the Father himself who sent me has given witness about me. Not one of you has ever given ear to his voice; his form you have not seen. | And the Father who sent me, *He* has given testimony concerning me. None of you have ever either heard His voice or seen what He is like. | The Father himself, who sent me, has testified about me. You have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his form. |
John 5:38 | And you have not kept his word in your hearts, because you have not faith in him whom he has sent. | Nor have you His word dwelling within you, for you refuse to believe Him whom *He* has sent. | You don't have his word living in you; for whom he sent, him you don't believe. |
John 5:39 | You make search in the holy Writings, in the belief that through them you get eternal life; and it is those Writings which give witness about me. | "You search the Scriptures, because you suppose that in them you will find the Life of the Ages; and it is those Scriptures that yield testimony concerning me; | You search the scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and these are they which testify about me. |
John 5:40 | And still you have no desire to come to me so that you may have life. | and yet you are unwilling to come to me that you may have Life. | Yet you will not come to me, that you may have life. |
John 5:41 | I do not take honour from men; | "I do not accept glory from man, | I don't receive glory from men. |
John 5:42 | But I have knowledge of you that you have no love for God in your hearts. | but I know you well, and I know that in your hearts you do not really love God. | But I know you, that you don't have God's love in yourselves. |
John 5:43 | I have come in my Father's name, and your hearts are not open to me. If another comes with no other authority but himself, you will give him your approval. | I have come as my Father's representative, and you do not receive me. If some one else comes representing only himself, him you will receive. | I have come in my Father's name, and you don't receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. |
John 5:44 | How is it possible for you to have faith while you take honour one from another and have no desire for the honour which comes from the only God? | How is it possible for you to believe, while you receive glory from one another and have no desire for the glory that comes from the only God? | How can you believe, who receive glory from one another, and you don't seek the glory that comes from the only God? |
John 5:45 | Put out of your minds the thought that I will say things against you to the Father: the one who says things against you is Moses, on whom you put your hopes. | "Do not suppose that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you, namely Moses, on whom your hope rests. | "Don't think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you, even Moses, on whom you have set your hope. |
John 5:46 | If you had belief in Moses you would have belief in me; for his writings are about me. | For if you believe Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote about me. | For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote about me. |
John 5:47 | If you have no belief in his writings, how will you have belief in my words? | But if you disbelieve his writings, how are you to believe my words?" | But if you don't believe his writings, how will you believe my words?" |
