John 8:1But Jesus went to the Mountain of Olives.but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
John 8:2And early in the morning he came again into the Temple and all the people came to him and he was seated teaching them.At break of day however He returned to the Temple, and there the people came to Him in crowds. He seated Himself; At dawn, he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him. He sat down, and taught them.
John 8:3Now the scribes and Pharisees came, with a woman who had been taken in the act of sinning against the married relation;and was teaching them when the Scribes and the Pharisees brought to Him a woman who had been found committing adultery. They made her stand in the centre of the court, and they put the case to Him.The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman taken in adultery. Having set her in the midst,
John 8:4And putting her forward, they said to him, Master, this woman has been taken in the very act of sinning against the married relation."Rabbi," they said, "this woman has been found in the very act of committing adultery.they told him, "Teacher, we found this woman in adultery, in the very act.
John 8:5Now in the law Moses gave directions that such women were to be stoned; what do you say about it?Now, in the Law, Moses has ordered us to stone such women to death. But what do you say?"Now in our law, Moses commanded us to stone such. What then do you say about her?"
John 8:6They said this, testing him, so that they might have something against him. But Jesus, with his head bent down, made letters on the floor with his finger. They asked this in order to put Him to the test, so that they might have some charge to bring against Him. But Jesus leant forward and began to write with His finger on the ground. They said this testing him, that they might have something to accuse him of. But Jesus stooped down, and wrote on the ground with his finger, as if he didn't hear.
John 8:7But when they went on with their questions, he got up and said to them, Let him among you who is without sin be the first to send a stone at her. When however they persisted with their question, He raised His head and said to them, "Let the sinless man among you be the first to throw a stone at her."But when they continued asking him, he lifted himself up, and said to them, "He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone at her."
John 8:8And again, with bent head, he made letters on the floor. Then He leant forward again, and again began to write on the ground.Again he stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.
John 8:9And when his words came to their ears, they went out one by one, starting with the oldest even to the last, because they were conscious of what was in their hearts: and Jesus was there by himself with the woman before him. They listened to Him, and then, beginning with the eldest, took their departure, one by one, till all were gone. And Jesus was left behind alone and the woman in the centre of the court. They, when they heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning from the oldest, even to the last. Jesus was left alone with the woman where she was, in the midst.
John 8:10Then Jesus got up, and seeing nobody but the woman, he said to her, Where are the men who said things against you? did no one give a decision against you? Then, raising His head, Jesus said to her, "Where are they? Has no one condemned you?"Jesus lifted himself up, and seeing no one but the woman, said to her, "Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?"
John 8:11And she said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said, And I do not give a decision against you: go, and never do wrong again.]"No one, Sir," she replied. "And *I* do not condemn you either," said Jesus; "go, and from this time do not sin any more."]She said, "No one, Lord." Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you. Go your way. From now on, sin no more."
John 8:12Then again Jesus said to them, I am the light of the world; he who comes with me will not be walking in the dark but will have the light of life.Once more Jesus addressed them. "I am the Light of the world," He said; "the man who follows me shall certainly not walk in the dark, but shall have the light of Life."Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life."
John 8:13So the Pharisees said to him, The witness you give is about yourself: your witness is not true."You are giving testimony about yourself," said the Pharisees; "your testimony is not true."The Pharisees therefore said to him, "You testify about yourself. Your witness is not valid."
John 8:14Jesus said in answer, Even if I give witness about myself, my witness is true, because I have knowledge of where I came from and where I am going; but you have no knowledge of where I come from or of where I am going."Even if I am giving testimony about myself," replied Jesus, "my testimony is true; for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you know neither of these two things.Jesus answered them, "Even if I testify about myself, my witness is true, for I know where I came from, and where I am going; but you don't know where I came from, or where I am going.
John 8:15You are judging from what you see; I am judging no man.You judge according to appearances: I am judging no one.You judge according to the flesh. I judge no one.
John 8:16Even if I am judging, my decision is right, because I am not by myself with me is the Father who sent me.And even if I do judge, my judgement is just; for I am not alone, but the Father who sent me is with me.Even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent me.
John 8:17Even in your law it is said that the witness of two men is true.In your own Law, too, it is written that the testimony of two men is true. It's also written in your law that the testimony of two men is valid.
John 8:18I give witness about myself and the Father who sent me gives witness about me.I am one giving testimony about myself, and the Father who sent me gives testimony about me."I am he who testifies about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me."
John 8:19Then they said to him, Where is your Father? Jesus said in answer, You have no knowledge of me or of my Father: if you had knowledge of me you would have knowledge of my Father."Where is your Father?" they asked. "You know my Father as little as you know me." He replied; "if you knew me, you would know my Father also."They said therefore to him, "Where is your Father?" Jesus answered, "You know neither me, nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also."
John 8:20Jesus said these words in the place where the offerings were stored, while he was teaching in the Temple: but no man took him because his time was still to come. These sayings He uttered in the Treasury, while teaching in the Temple; yet no one arrested Him, because His time had not yet come.Jesus spoke these words in the treasury, as he taught in the temple. No one took him, because his hour had not yet come.
John 8:21Then he said to them again, I am going away and you will be looking for me, but death will overtake you in your sins. It is not possible for you to come where I am going.Again He said to them, "I am going away. Then you will try to find me, but you will die in your sins. Where I am going, it is impossible for you to come."Jesus said therefore again to them, "I am going away, and you will seek me, and will die in your sins. Where I go, you can't come."
John 8:22So the Jews said, Will he take his life? Is that why he says, Where I go it is not possible for you to come? The Jews began to ask one another, "Is he going to kill himself, do you think, that he says, `Where I am going, it is impossible for you to come'?"The Jews therefore said, "Will he kill himself, that he says, 'Where I am going, you can't come?'"
John 8:23And he said to them, You are of the earth; I am from heaven: you are of this world; I am not of this world."You," He continued, "are from below, I am from above: you are of this present world, I am not of this present world. He said to them, "You are from beneath. I am from above. You are of this world. I am not of this world.
John 8:24For this reason I said to you that death will overtake you in your sins: for if you have not faith that I am he, death will come to you while you are in your sins. That is why I told you that you will die in your sins; for, unless you believe that I am He, that is what will happen."I said therefore to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins."
John 8:25Then they said to him, Who are you? Jesus said, What I said to you from the first."You who are you?" they asked. "How is it that I am speaking to you at all?" replied Jesus. They said therefore to him, "Who are you?" Jesus said to them, "Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning.
John 8:26I have much to say about you and against you: but he who sent me is true and what he has said to me I say to the world."Many things I have to speak and to judge concerning you. But He who sent me is true, and the things which I have heard from Him are those which I have come into the world to speak."I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you. However he who sent me is true; and the things which I heard from him, these I say to the world."
John 8:27They did not see that his words were about the Father. They did not perceive that He was speaking to them of the Father. They didn't perceive that he spoke to them about the Father.
John 8:28So Jesus said, When the Son of man has been lifted up by you, then it will be clear to you who I am, and that I do nothing of myself, but say as the Father gave me teaching. So Jesus added, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He. Of myself I do nothing; but as the Father has taught me, so I speak.Jesus therefore said to them, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then will you know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself, but as my Father taught me, I say these things.
John 8:29He who sent me is with me; he has not gone from me, because at all times I do the things which are pleasing to him.And He who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone: for I do always what is pleasing to Him."He who sent me is with me. The Father hasn't left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him."
John 8:30When he said this a number came to have faith in him.As He thus spoke, many became believers in Him.As he spoke these things, many believed in him.
John 8:31Then Jesus said to the Jews who had faith in him, If you keep my word, then you are truly my disciples;Jesus therefore said to those of the Jews who had now believed in Him, "As for you, if you hold fast to my teaching, then you are truly my disciples;Jesus therefore said to those Jews who had believed him, "If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples.
John 8:32And you will have knowledge of what is true, and that will make you free.and you shall know the Truth, and the Truth will make you free."You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."
John 8:33They said to him in answer, We are Abraham's seed and have never been any man's servant: why do you say, You will become free?"We are descendants of Abraham," they answered, "and have never at any time been in slavery to any one. What do those words of yours mean, `You shall become free'?"They answered him, "We are Abraham's seed, and have never yet been in bondage to anyone. How do you say, 'You will be made free?'"
John 8:34And this was the answer Jesus gave them: Truly I say to you, Everyone who does evil is the servant of sin."In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that every one who commits sin is the slave of sin.Jesus answered them, "Most assuredly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is the bondservant of sin.
John 8:35Now the servant does not go on living in the house for ever, but the son does. Now a slave does not remain permanently in his master's house, but a son does.A bondservant doesn't live in the house forever. A son remains forever.
John 8:36If then the son makes you free, you will be truly free.If then the Son shall make you free, you will be free indeed. If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
John 8:37I am conscious that you are Abraham's seed; but you have a desire to put me to death because my word has no place in you.You are descendants of Abraham, I know; but you want to kill me, because my teaching gains no ground within you.I know that you are Abraham's seed, yet you seek to kill me, because my word finds no place in you.
John 8:38I say the things which I have seen in my Father's house: and you do the things which come to you from your father's house. The words I speak are those I have learnt in the presence of the Father. Therefore you also should do what you have heard from your father."I say the things which I have seen with my Father; and you also do the things which you have seen with your father."
John 8:39In answer they said to him, Our father is Abraham. Jesus said to them, If you were Abraham's children you would do what Abraham did."Our father is Abraham," they said. "If you were Abraham's children," replied Jesus, "it is Abraham's deeds that you would be doing. They answered him, "Our father is Abraham." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would do the works of Abraham.
John 8:40But now you have a desire to put me to death, a man who has said to you what is true, as I had it from God: Abraham did not do that. But, in fact, you are longing to kill me, a man who has spoken to you the truth which I have heard from God. Abraham did not do that. But now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God. Abraham didn't do this.
John 8:41You are doing the works of your father. They said to him, We are true sons of Abraham; we have one Father, who is God.You are doing the deeds of your father." "We," they replied, "are not illegitimate children. We have one Father, namely God."You do the works of your father." They said to him, "We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father, God."
John 8:42Jesus said to them, If God was your Father you would have love for me, because it was from God I came and am here. I did not come of myself, but he sent me."If God were your Father," said Jesus, "you would love me; for it is from God that I came and I am now here. I have not come of myself, but *He* sent me.Therefore Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came forth and have come from God. For neither have I come of myself, but he sent me.
John 8:43Why are my words not clear to you? It is because your ears are shut to my teaching. How is it you do not understand me when I speak? It is because you cannot bear to listen to my words. Why don't you understand my speech? Because you can't hear my word.
John 8:44You are the children of your father the Evil One and it is your pleasure to do his desires. From the first he was a taker of life; and he did not go in the true way because there is no true thing in him. When he says what is false, it is natural to him, for he is false and the father of what is false. The father whose sons you are is the Devil; and you desire to do what gives him pleasure. *He* was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand firm in the truth for there is no truth in him. Whenever he utters his lie, he utters it out of his own store; for he is a liar, and the father of lies. You are of your Father, the devil, and it is your desire to do the lusts of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and doesn't stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own; for he is a liar, and the father of it.
John 8:45But because I say what is true, you have no belief in me.But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me.But because I tell the truth, you don't believe me.
John 8:46Which of you is able truly to say that I am a sinner? If I say what is true, why have you no belief in me?Which of *you* convicts me of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me?Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me?
John 8:47He who is a child of God gives ear to the words of God: your ears are not open to them because you are not from God.He who is a child of God listens to God's words. You do not listen to them: and why? It is because you are not God's children."He who is of God hears the words of God. For this cause you don't hear, because you are not of God."
John 8:48The Jews said to him in answer, Are we not right in saying that you are of Samaria and have an evil spirit?"Are we not right," answered the Jews, "in saying that you are a Samaritan and are possessed by a demon?"Then the Jews answered him, "Don't we say well that you are a Samaritan, and have a demon?"
John 8:49And this was the answer of Jesus: I have not an evil spirit; but I give honour to my Father and you do not give honour to me."I am not possessed by a demon," replied Jesus. "On the contrary I honour my Father, and you dishonour me.Jesus answered, "I don't have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me.
John 8:50I, however, am not in search of glory for myself: there is One who is searching for it and he is judge.I, however, am not aiming at glory for myself: there is One who aims at glory for me and who judges. But I don't seek my own glory. There is one who seeks and judges.
John 8:51Truly I say to you, If a man keeps my word he will never see death. In most solemn truth I tell you that if any one shall have obeyed my teaching he shall in no case ever see death."Most assuredly, I tell you, if a person keeps my word, he will never see death."
John 8:52The Jews said to him, Now we are certain that you have an evil spirit. Abraham is dead, and the prophets are dead; and you say, If a man keeps my word he will never see death."Now," exclaimed the Jews, "we know that you are possessed by a demon. Abraham died, and so did the Prophets, and yet *you* say, `If any one shall have obeyed my teaching, he shall in no case ever taste death.'Then the Jews said to him, "Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets; and you say, 'If a man keeps my word, he will never taste of death.'
John 8:53Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? and the prophets are dead: who do you say that you are?Are you really greater than our forefather Abraham? For he died. And the prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?"Are you greater than our father, Abraham, who died? The prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?"
John 8:54Jesus said in answer, If I take glory for myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father who gives me glory, of whom you say that he is your God."Were I to glorify myself," answered Jesus, "I should have no real glory. There is One who glorifies me namely my Father, who you say is your God.Jesus answered, "If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say that he is our God.
John 8:55You have no knowledge of him, but I have knowledge of him; and if I said I have no knowledge of him I would be talking falsely like you: but I have full knowledge of him, and I keep his word. You do not know Him, but I know Him perfectly; and were I to deny my knowledge of Him, I should resemble you, and be a liar. On the contrary I do know Him, and I obey His commands. You have not known him, but I know him. If I said, 'I don't know him,' I would be like you, a liar. But I know him, and keep his word.
John 8:56Your father Abraham was full of joy at the hope of seeing my day: he saw it and was glad.Abraham your forefather exulted in the hope of seeing my day: and he saw it, and was glad."Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day. He saw it, and was glad."
John 8:57Then the Jews said to him, You are not fifty years old; have you seen Abraham?"You are not yet fifty years old," cried the Jews, "and have you seen Abraham?"The Jews therefore said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?"
John 8:58Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, Before Abraham came into being, I am."In most solemn truth," answered Jesus, "I tell you that before Abraham came into existence, I am."Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I tell you, before Abraham was born, I AM."
John 8:59So they took up stones to send at him: but Jesus got secretly out of their way and went out of the Temple.Thereupon they took up stones with which to stone Him, but He hid Himself and went away out of the Temple. They took up stones therefore to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
