Luke 23:1And they all went and took him before Pilate.Then the whole assembly rose and brought Him to Pilate, and began to accuse Him.And having risen, the whole multitude of them did lead him to Pilate,
Luke 23:2And they made statements against him, saying, This man has to our knowledge been teaching our nation to do wrong, and not to make payment of taxes to Caesar, even saying that he himself is Christ, a king."We have found this man," they said, "an agitator among our nation, forbidding the payment of tribute to Caesar, and claiming to be himself an anointed king."and began to accuse him, saying, `This one we found perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying himself to be Christ a king.`
Luke 23:3And Pilate said to him, Are you the King of the Jews? And he said in answer, You say so.Then Pilate asked Him, "You, then, are the King of the Jews?" "It is as you say," He replied.And Pilate questioned him, saying, `Thou art the king of the Jews?` and he answering him, said, `Thou dost say [it].`
Luke 23:4And Pilate said to the chief priests and the people, In my opinion this man has done no wrong.Pilate said to the High Priests and to the crowd, "I can find no crime in this man."And Pilate said unto the chief priests, and the multitude, `I find no fault in this man;`
Luke 23:5But they became more violent than before, saying, He has made trouble among the people, teaching through all Judaea from Galilee to this place.But they violently insisted. "He stirs up the people," they said, "throughout all Judaea with His teaching even from Galilee (where He first started) to this city."and they were the more urgent, saying `He doth stir up the people, teaching throughout the whole of Judea having begun from Galilee unto this place.`
Luke 23:6But at these words Pilate said, Is the man a Galilaean?On hearing this, Pilate inquired, "Is this man a Galilaean?"And Pilate having heard of Galilee, questioned if the man is a Galilean,
Luke 23:7And when he saw that he was under the authority of Herod, he sent him to Herod, who was in Jerusalem himself at that time.And learning that He belonged to Herod's jurisdiction he sent Him to Herod, for he too was in Jerusalem at that time.and having known that he is from the jurisdiction of Herod, he sent him back unto Herod, he being also in Jerusalem in those days.
Luke 23:8Now when Herod saw Jesus he was very glad, having for a long time had a desire to see him, for he had had accounts of him, and was hoping to see some wonders done by him.To Herod the sight of Jesus was a great gratification, for, for a long time, he had been wanting to see Him, because he had heard so much about Him. He hoped also to see some miracle performed by Him.And Herod having seen Jesus did rejoice exceedingly, for he was wishing for a long [time] to see him, because of hearing many things about him, and he was hoping some sign to see done by him,
Luke 23:9And he put a great number of questions to him, but he said nothing.So he put a number of questions to Him, but Jesus gave him no reply.and was questioning him in many words, and he answered him nothing.
Luke 23:10And the chief priests and the scribes were there, making statements against him violently.Meanwhile the High Priests and the Scribes were standing there and vehemently accusing Him.And the chief priests and the scribes stood vehemently accusing him,
Luke 23:11And Herod, with the men of his army, put shame on him and made sport of him, and dressing him in shining robes, he sent him back to Pilate.Then, laughing to scorn the claims of Jesus, Herod (and his soldiers with him) made sport of Him, dressed Him in a gorgeous costume, and sent Him back to Pilate.and Herod with his soldiers having set him at nought, and having mocked, having put around him gorgeous apparel, did send him back to Pilate,
Luke 23:12And that day Herod and Pilate became friends with one another, for before they had been against one another.And on that very day Herod and Pilate became friends again, for they had been for some time at enmity.and both Pilate and Herod became friends on that day with one another, for they were before at enmity between themselves.
Luke 23:13And Pilate sent for the chief priests and the rulers and the people, and said to them,Then calling together the High Priests and the Rulers and the people, Pilate said,And Pilate having called together the chief priests, and the rulers, and the people,
Luke 23:14You say that this man has been teaching the people evil things: now I, after going into the question before you, see nothing wrong in this man in connection with the things which you have said against him:"You have brought this man to me on a charge of corrupting the loyalty of the people. But, you see, I have examined him in your presence and have discovered in the man no ground for the accusations which you bring against him.said unto them, `Ye brought to me this man as perverting the people, and lo, I before you having examined, found in this man no fault in those things ye bring forward against him;
Luke 23:15And Herod is of the same opinion, for he has sent him back to us; for, you see, he has done nothing for which I might put him to death.No, nor does Herod; for he has sent him back to us; and, you see, there is nothing he has done that deserves death.no, nor yet Herod, for I sent you back unto him, and lo, nothing worthy of death is having been done by him;
Luke 23:16And so I will give him punishment and let him go.I will therefore give him a light punishment and release him."having chastised, therefore, I will release him,`
Luke 23:17[][]for it was necessary for him to release to them one at every feast,
Luke 23:18But with loud voices they said all together, Put this man to death, and make Barabbas free.Then the whole multitude burst out into a shout. "Away with this man," they said, "and release Barabbas to us"and they cried out the whole multitude saying, `Away with this one, and release to us Barabbas,`
Luke 23:19Now this man was in prison because of an attack against the government in the town, in which there had been loss of life.Barabbas! who had been lodged in jail for some time in connexion with a riot which had occurred in the city, and for murder.who had been, because of a certain sedition made in the city, and murder, cast into prison.
Luke 23:20And Pilate again said to them that it was his desire to let Jesus go free.But Pilate once more addressed them, wishing to set Jesus free.Pilate again then wishing to release Jesus called to them,
Luke 23:21But crying out they said, To the cross with him!They, however, persistently shouted, "Crucify, crucify him!"but they were calling out, saying, `Crucify, crucify him.`
Luke 23:22And he said to them a third time, Why, what evil has he done? I see no reason for putting him to death: I will give him punishment and let him go.A third time he appealed to them: "Why, what crime has the man committed? I have discovered in him nothing that deserves death. I will therefore give him a light punishment and release him."And he a third time said unto them, `Why, what evil did he? no cause of death did I find in him; having chastised him, then, I will release [him].`
Luke 23:23But they went on crying out loudly, Let him be put to death on the cross. And they had their way.But they urgently insisted, demanding with frantic outcries that He should be crucified; and their clamour prevailed.And they were pressing with loud voices asking him to be crucified, and their voices, and those of the chief priests, were prevailing,
Luke 23:24And Pilate gave his decision for their desire to be put into effect.So Pilate gave judgement, yielding to their demand.and Pilate gave judgment for their request being done,
Luke 23:25And in answer to their request, he let that man go free who had been in prison for acting against the government and causing death, and Jesus he gave up to their pleasure.The man who was lying in prison charged with riot and murder and for whom they clamoured he set free, but Jesus he gave up to be dealt with as they desired.and he released him who because of sedition and murder hath been cast into the prison, whom they were asking, and Jesus he gave up to their will.
Luke 23:26And while they were taking him away, they put their hands on Simon of Cyrene, who was coming from the country, and made him take the cross after Jesus.As soon as they led Him away, they laid hold on one Simon, a Cyrenaean, who was coming in from the country, and on his shoulders they put the cross, for him to carry it behind Jesus.And as they led him away, having taken hold on Simon, a certain Cyrenian, coming from the field, they put on him the cross, to bear [it] behind Jesus.
Luke 23:27And a great band of people went after him, and of women making signs of grief and weeping for him.A vast crowd of the people also followed Him, and of women who were beating their breasts and wailing for Him.And there was following him a great multitude of the people, and of women, who also were beating themselves and lamenting him,
Luke 23:28But Jesus, turning to them, said, Daughters of Jerusalem, let not your weeping be for me, but for yourselves and for your children.But Jesus turned towards them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.and Jesus having turned unto them, said, `Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but for yourselves weep ye, and for your children;
Luke 23:29For the days are coming in which they will say, Happy are those who have had no children, whose bodies have never given birth, whose breasts have never given milk.For a time is coming when they will say, `Blessed are the women who never bore children, and the breasts which have never given nourishment.'for, lo, days do come, in which they shall say, Happy the barren, and wombs that did not bare, and paps that did not give suck;
Luke 23:30And they will say to the mountains, Come down on us, and to the hills, Be a cover over us.Then will they begin to say to the mountains, `Fall on us;' and to the hills, `Cover us.'then they shall begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us, and to the hills, Cover us;
Luke 23:31For if they do these things when the tree is green, what will they do when it is dry?For if they are doing these things in the case of the green tree, what will be done in that of the dry?"for, if in the green tree they do these things in the dry what may happen?`
Luke 23:32And two others, evil-doers, were taken with him to be put to death.They brought also two others, criminals, to put them to death with Him.And there were also others two evil-doers with him, to be put to death;
Luke 23:33And when they came to the place which is named Golgotha, they put him on the cross, and the evil-doers, one on the right side, and the other on the left.When they reached the place called `The Skull,' there they nailed Him to the cross, and the criminals also, one at His right hand and one at His left.and when they came to the place that is called Skull, there they crucified him and the evil-doers, one on the right hand and one on the left.
Luke 23:34And Jesus said, Father, let them have forgiveness, for they have no knowledge of what they are doing. And they made division of his clothing among them by the decision of chance.Jesus prayed, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they are doing." And they divided His garments among them, drawing lots for them;And Jesus said, `Father, forgive them, for they have not known what they do;` and parting his garments they cast a lot.
Luke 23:35And the people were looking on. And the rulers made sport of him, saying, He was a saviour of others; let him do something for himself, if he is the Christ, the man of God's selection.and the people stood looking on. The Rulers, too, repeatedly uttered their bitter taunts. "This fellow," they said, "saved others: let him save himself, if he is God's Anointed, the Chosen One."And the people were standing, looking on, and the rulers also were sneering with them, saying, `Others he saved, let him save himself, if this be the Christ, the choice one of God.`
Luke 23:36And the men of the army made sport of him, coming to him and giving him bitter wine,And the soldiers also made sport of Him, coming and offering Him sour wine and saying,And mocking him also were the soldiers, coming near and offering vinegar to him,
Luke 23:37And saying, If you are the King of the Jews, get yourself free."Are *you* the King of the Jews? Save yourself, then!"and saying, `If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.`
Luke 23:38And these words were put in writing over him, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.There was moreover a writing over His head: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.And there was also a superscription written over him, in letters of Greek, and Roman, and Hebrew, `This is the King of the Jews.`
Luke 23:39And one of the evil-doers on the cross, with bitter feeling, said to him, Are you not the Christ? Get yourself and us out of this.Now one of the criminals who had been crucified insulted Him, saying, "Are not you the Christ? Save yourself and us."And one of the evil-doers who were hanged, was speaking evil of him, saying, `If thou be the Christ, save thyself and us.`
Luke 23:40But the other, protesting, said, Have you no fear of God? for you have a part in the same punishment,But the other, answering, reproved him. "Do you also not fear God," he said, "when you are actually suffering the same punishment?And the other answering, was rebuking him, saying, `Dost thou not even fear God, that thou art in the same judgment?
Luke 23:41And with reason; for we have the right reward of our acts, but this man has done nothing wrong.And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving due requital for what we have done. But He has done nothing amiss."and we indeed righteously, for things worthy of what we did we receive back, but this one did nothing out of place;`
Luke 23:42And he said, Jesus, keep me in mind when you come in your kingdom.And he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come in your Kingdom."and he said to Jesus, `Remember me, lord, when thou mayest come in thy reign;`
Luke 23:43And he said to him, Truly I say to you, Today you will be with me in Paradise."I tell you in solemn truth," replied Jesus, "that this very day you shall be with me in Paradise."and Jesus said to him, `Verily I say to thee, To-day with me thou shalt be in the paradise.`
Luke 23:44And it was now about the sixth hour; and all the land was dark till the ninth hour;It was now about noon, and a darkness came over the whole country till three o'clock in the afternoon.And it was, as it were, the sixth hour, and darkness came over all the land till the ninth hour,
Luke 23:45The light of the sun went out, and the curtain in the Temple was parted in two.The sun was darkened, and the curtain of the Sanctuary was torn down the middle,and the sun was darkened, and the vail of the sanctuary was rent in the midst,
Luke 23:46And Jesus gave a loud cry and said, Father, into your hands I give my spirit: and when he had said this, he gave up his spirit.and Jesus cried out in a loud voice, and said, "Father, to Thy hands I entrust my spirit." And after uttering these words He yielded up His spirit.and having cried with a loud voice, Jesus said, `Father, to Thy hands I commit my spirit;` and these things having said, he breathed forth the spirit.
Luke 23:47And when the captain saw what was done, he gave praise to God, saying, Without doubt this was an upright man.The Captain, seeing what had happened, gave glory to God, saying, "Beyond question this man was innocent."And the centurion having seen what was done, did glorify God, saying, `Really this man was righteous;`
Luke 23:48And all the people who had come together to see it, when they saw the things which were done, went back again making signs of grief.And all the crowds that had come together to this sight, after seeing all that had occurred, returned to the city beating their breasts.and all the multitudes who were come together to this sight, beholding the things that came to pass, smiting their breasts did turn back;
Luke 23:49And all his friends and the women who came with him from Galilee, were waiting at a distance, watching these things.But all His acquaintances, and the women who had been His followers after leaving Galilee, continued standing at a distance and looking on.and all his acquaintances stood afar off, and women who did follow him from Galilee, beholding these things.
Luke 23:50Now there was a man named Joseph, a man of authority and a good and upright manThere was a member of the Council of the name of Joseph, a kind-hearted and upright man,And lo, a man, by name Joseph, being a counsellor, a man good and righteous,
Luke 23:51(He had not given his approval to their decision or their acts), of Arimathaea, a town of the Jews, who was waiting for the kingdom of God:who came from the Jewish town of Arimathaea and was awaiting the coming of the Kingdom of God. He had not concurred in the design or action of the Council,he was not consenting to their counsel and deed from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who also himself was expecting the reign of God,
Luke 23:52This man went to Pilate and made a request for the body of Jesus.and now he went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.he, having gone near to Pilate, asked the body of Jesus,
Luke 23:53And he took it down, and folding it in a linen cloth, he put it in a place cut in the rock for a dead body; and no one had ever been put in it.Then, taking it down, he wrapped it in a linen sheet and laid it in a tomb in the rock, where no one else had yet been put.and having taken it down, he wrapped it in fine linen, and placed it in a tomb hewn out, where no one was yet laid.
Luke 23:54Now it was the day of making ready and the Sabbath was coming on.It was the Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was near at hand.And the day was a preparation, and sabbath was approaching,
Luke 23:55And the women who had come with him from Galilee went after him and saw the place and how his body had been put to rest;The women those who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed close behind, and saw the tomb and how His body was placed.and the women also who have come with him out of Galilee having followed after, beheld the tomb, and how his body was placed,
Luke 23:56And they went back and got ready spices and perfumes; and on the Sabbath they took their rest, in agreement with the law.Then they returned, and prepared spices and perfumes. On the Sabbath they rested in obedience to the Commandment.and having turned back, they made ready spices and ointments, and on the sabbath, indeed, they rested, according to the command.
