Mark 12:1And he gave them teaching in the form of stories. A man had a vine-garden planted, and put a wall about it, and made a place for crushing out the wine, and put up a tower, and let it out to field-workers, and went into another country.He began to speak to them in parables. "A man planted a vineyard, set a hedge around it, dug a pit for the winepress, built a tower, rented it out to a farmer, and went into another country.Then He began to speak to them in figurative language. "There was once a man," He said, "who planted a vineyard, fenced it round, dug a pit for the wine-tank, and built a strong lodge. Then he let the place to vine-dressers and went abroad.
Mark 12:2And when the time came, he sent a servant to get from the workmen some of the fruit of the garden.When it was time, he sent a servant to the farmer to get from the farmer his share of the fruit of the vineyard.At vintage-time he sent one of his servants to receive from the vine-dressers a share of the grapes.
Mark 12:3And they took him, and gave him blows, and sent him away with nothing.They took him, beat him, and sent him away empty.But they seized him, beat him cruelly and sent him away empty-handed.
Mark 12:4And again he sent to them another servant; and they gave him wounds on the head, and were very cruel to him.Again, he sent another servant to them; and they threw stones at him, wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully treated.Again he sent to them another servant: and as for him, they wounded him in the head and treated him shamefully.
Mark 12:5And he sent another; and they put him to death: and a number of others, whipping some, and putting some to death.Again he sent another; and they killed him; and many others, beating some, and killing some.Yet a third he sent, and him they killed. And he sent many besides, and them also they ill-treated, beating some and killing others.
Mark 12:6He still had one, a dearly loved son: he sent him last to them, saying, They will have respect for my son.Therefore he had yet one, a beloved son, he sent him last to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.'He had still one left whom he could send, a dearly-loved son: him last of all he sent, saying, "`They will treat my son with respect.'
Mark 12:7But those workmen said among themselves, This is he who will one day be the owner of the property; come, let us put him to death, and the heritage will be ours.But those farmers said among themselves, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.'"But those men the vine-dressers said to one another, "`Here is the heir: come, let us kill him, and then the property will one day be ours.'
Mark 12:8And they took him and put him to death, pushing his body out of the garden.They took him, killed him, and cast him forth out of the vineyard."So they took him and killed him, and flung his body outside the vineyard.
Mark 12:9What then will the master of the garden do? He will come and put the workmen to death, and will give the garden into the hands of others.What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the farmers, and will give the vineyard to others.What, therefore, will the owner of the vineyard do?" "He will come and put the vine-dressers to death," they said; "and will give the vineyard to others."
Mark 12:10Have you not seen this which is in the Writings: The stone which the builders put on one side, the same was made the chief stone of the building:Haven't you even read this scripture: 'The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner."Have you not read even this passage," He added, "`The stone which the builders rejected has become the Cornerstone:
Mark 12:11This was the Lord's doing, and it is a wonder in our eyes?This was from the Lord, It is marvelous in our eyes'?"this Cornerstone came from the Lord, and is wonderful in our esteem?'"
Mark 12:12And they made attempts to take him; but they were in fear of the people, because they saw that the story was against them; and they went away from him.They tried to seize him, but they feared the multitude; for they perceived that he spoke the parable against them. They left him, and went away.And they kept looking out for an opportunity to seize Him, but were afraid of the people; for they saw that in this parable He had referred to *them*. So they left Him and went away.
Mark 12:13Then they sent to him certain of the Pharisees and the Herodians, so that they might make use of his words to take him by a trick.They sent some of the Pharisees and of the Herodians to him, that they might catch him in words.Their next step was to send to Him some of the Pharisees and of Herod's partisans to entrap Him in conversation.
Mark 12:14And when they had come, they said to him, Master, we are certain that you are true, and have no fear of anyone: you have no respect for a man's position, but you are teaching the true way of God: Is it right to give taxes to Caesar or not?When they had come, they asked him, "Teacher, we know that you are honest, and don't defer to anyone; for you aren't partial to anyone, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?So they came to Him. "Rabbi," they said, "we know that you are a truthful man and you do not fear any one; for you do not recognize human distinctions, but teach God's way truly. Is it allowable to pay poll-tax to Caesar, or not?
Mark 12:15Are we to give or not to give? But he, conscious of their false hearts, said to them, Why do you put me to the test? give me a penny, so that I may see it.Shall we give, or shall we not give?" But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, "Why do you test me? Bring me a denarius, that I may see it."Shall we pay, or shall we refuse to pay?" But He, knowing their hypocrisy, replied, "Why try to ensnare me? Bring me a shilling for me to look at."
Mark 12:16And they gave him one. And he said to them, Whose is this image and name on it? And they said to him, Caesar's.They brought it. He said to them, "Whose is this image and inscription?" They said to him, "Caesar's."They brought one; and He asked them, "Whose is this likeness and this inscription?" "Caesar's," they replied.
Mark 12:17And Jesus said to them, Give to Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and to God the things which are God's. And they were full of wonder at him.Jesus answered them, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." They marveled greatly at him."What is Caesar's," replied Jesus, "pay to Caesar and what is God's, pay to God." And they wondered exceedingly at Him.
Mark 12:18And there came to him Sadducees, who say there is no coming back from the dead; and they put a question to him, saying,There came to him Sadducees, who say that there is no resurrection. They asked him, saying,Then came to Him a party of Sadducees, a sect which denies that there is any Resurrection; and they proceeded to question Him.
Mark 12:19Master, in the law Moses says, If a man's brother comes to his end, and has a wife still living and no child, it is right for his brother to take his wife, and get a family for his brother."Teacher, Moses wrote to us, 'If a man's brother dies, and leaves a wife behind him, and leaves no child, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up children to his brother.'"Rabbi," they said, "Moses made it a law for us: `If a man's brother should die and leave a wife, but no child, the man shall marry the widow and raise up a family for his brother.'
Mark 12:20There were seven brothers: and the first took a wife, and at his death there were no offspring;There were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and dying left no children.There were once seven brothers, the eldest of whom married a wife, but at his death left no family.
Mark 12:21And the second took her, and at his death there were no offspring; and the third the same:The second took her, and died, leaving no children behind him. The third likewise;The second married her, and died, leaving no family; and the third did the same.
Mark 12:22And all the seven had no seed. Last of all the woman herself came to her death.and the seven took her and left no children. Last of all the woman also died.And so did the rest of the seven, all dying childless. Finally the woman also died.
Mark 12:23In the future life, when they come back from the dead, whose wife will she be? for the seven had her for a wife.In the resurrection, when they rise, whose wife will she be of them? For the seven had her as a wife."At the Resurrection whose wife will she be? For they all seven married her."
Mark 12:24Jesus said to them, Is not this the reason for your error, that you have no knowledge of the holy Writings or of the power of God?Jesus answered them, "Isn't this because you are mistaken, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God?"Is not this the cause of your error," replied Jesus "your ignorance alike of the Scriptures and of the power of God?
Mark 12:25When they come back from the dead, they do not get married, but are like the angels in heaven.For when they will rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.For when they have risen from among the dead, men do not marry and women are not given in marriage, but they are as angels are in Heaven.
Mark 12:26But as to the dead coming back to life; have you not seen in the book of Moses, about the burning thorn-tree, how God said to him, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?But about the dead, that they are raised; haven't you read in the book of Moses, at the Bush, how God spoke to him, saying, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?'But as to the dead, that they rise to life, have you never read in the Book of Moses, in the passage about the Bush, how God said to him, `I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?'
Mark 12:27He is not the God of the dead, but of the living: you are greatly in error.He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are therefore badly mistaken."He is not the God of dead, but of living men. You are in grave error."
Mark 12:28And one of the scribes came, and hearing their argument together, and seeing that he had given them a good answer, put the question to him, Which law is the first of all?One of the scribes came, and heard them questioning together. Knowing that he had answered them well, asked him, "What commandment is the greatest of all?"Then one of the Scribes, who had heard them disputing and well knew that Jesus had given them an answer to the point, and a forcible one, came forward and asked Him, "Which is the chief of all the Commandments?"
Mark 12:29Jesus said in answer, The first is, Give ear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord;Jesus answered, "The greatest is, 'Hear, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one:"The chief Commandment," replied Jesus, "is this: `Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is one Lord;
Mark 12:30And you are to have love for the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.' This is the primary commandment.and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, thy whole soul, thy whole mind, and thy whole strength.'
Mark 12:31The second is this, Have love for your neighbour as for yourself. There is no other law greater than these.The second is like this, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these.""The second is this: `Thou shalt love thy fellow man as thou lovest thyself.' "Other Commandment greater than these there is none."
Mark 12:32And the scribe said to him, Truly, Master, you have well said that he is one, and there is no other but he:The scribe said to him, "Truly, teacher, you have said well that he is one, and there is none other but he,So the Scribe said to Him, "Rightly, in very truth, Rabbi, have you said that He stands alone, and there is none but He;
Mark 12:33And to have love for him with all the heart, and with all the mind, and with all the strength, and to have the same love for his neighbour as for himself, is much more than all forms of offerings.and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices."and To love Him with all one's heart, with all one's understanding, and with all one's strength, and to love one's fellow man no less than oneself, is far better than all our whole burnt-offerings and sacrifices."
Mark 12:34And when Jesus saw that he gave a wise answer, he said to him, You are not far from the kingdom of God. And every man after that was in fear of questioning him any more.When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." No one dared ask him any question after that.Perceiving that the Scribe had answered wisely Jesus said to him, "You are not far from the Kingdom of God." No one from that time forward ventured to put any question to Him.
Mark 12:35And Jesus, when he was teaching in the Temple, said, How do the scribes say that the Christ is the Son of David?Jesus responded, as he taught in the temple, "How is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David?But, while teaching in the Temple, Jesus asked, "How is it the Scribes say that the Christ is a son of David?
Mark 12:36David himself said in the Holy Spirit, The Lord said to my Lord, Be seated at my right hand, till I put those who are against you under your feet.For David himself said in the Holy Spirit, 'The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, Until I make your enemies the footstool of your feet.'David himself said, taught by the Holy Spirit, "`The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand, until I have made thy foes a footstool under thy feet.'
Mark 12:37David himself gives him the name of Lord; and how then is he his son? And the common people gave ear to him gladly.Therefore David himself calls him Lord, so how can he be his son?" The common people heard him gladly."David himself calls Him `Lord:' how then can He be his son?" And the mass of people found pleasure in listening to Jesus.
Mark 12:38And in his teaching he said, Be on your watch against the scribes, whose pleasure it is to go about in long robes and be respected in the market-places,In his teaching he said to them, "Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and to get greetings in the marketplaces,Moreover in the course of His teaching He said, "Be on your guard against the Scribes who like to walk about in long robes and to be bowed to in places of public resort,
Mark 12:39And to have the chief seats in the Synagogues and the first places at feasts;and chief seats in the synagogues, and chief places at feasts:and to occupy the best seats in the synagogues and at dinner parties,
Mark 12:40Who take away the property of widows, and before the eyes of men make long prayers; these will be judged more hardly.those who devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation."and who swallow up the property of widows and then mask their wickedness by making long prayers: these men will receive far heavier punishment."
Mark 12:41And he took a seat by the place where the money was kept, and saw how the people put money into the boxes: and a number who had wealth put in much.Jesus sat down opposite the treasury, and saw how the multitude cast money into the treasury. Many who were rich cast in much.Having taken a seat opposite the Treasury, He observed how the people were dropping money into the Treasury, and that many of the wealthy threw in large sums.
Mark 12:42And there came a poor widow, and she put in two little bits of money, which make a farthing.There came a poor widow, and she cast in two lepta, which make a quadrans.But there came one poor widow and dropped in two farthings, equal in value to a halfpenny.
Mark 12:43And he made his disciples come to him, and said to them, Truly I say to you, This poor widow has put in more than all those who are putting money into the box:He called his disciples to himself, and said to them, "Most assuredly I tell you, this poor widow gave more than all those who are giving into the treasury,So He called His disciples to Him and said, "In solemn truth I tell you that this widow, poor as she is, has thrown in more than all the other contributors to the Treasury;
Mark 12:44Because they all put in something out of what they had no need for; but she out of her need put in all she had, even all her living.for they all gave out of their abundance, but she, out of her poverty, gave all that she had to live on."for they have all contributed out of what they could well spare, but she out of her need has thrown in all she possessed all she had to live on."
