John 19:1Then Pilate took Jesus and had him whipped with cords. Then, therefore, did Pilate take Jesus and scourge [him],Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.
John 19:2And the men of the army made a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they put a purple robe on him.and the soldiers having plaited a crown of thorns, did place [it] on his head, and a purple garment they put around him,And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,
John 19:3And they kept coming and saying, Long life to the King of the Jews! And they gave him blows with their hands.and said, `Hail! the king of the Jews;` and they were giving him slaps. And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.
John 19:4And Pilate went out again and said to them, See, I let him come out to you to make it clear to you that I see no wrong in him.Pilate, therefore, again went forth without, and saith to them, `Lo, I do bring him to you without, that ye may know that in him I find no fault;`Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith to them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.
John 19:5Then Jesus came out with the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, Here is the man!Jesus, therefore, came forth without, bearing the thorny crown and the purple garment; and he saith to them, `Lo, the man!`Then Jesus came forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith to them, Behold the man!
John 19:6So when the chief priests and the police saw him they gave a loud cry, To the cross! to the cross! Pilate said to them, Take him yourselves and put him on the cross: I see no crime in him. When, therefore, the chief priests and the officers did see him, they cried out, saying, `Crucify, crucify;` Pilate saith to them, `Take ye him ye, and crucify; for I find no fault in him;`When therefore the chief priests and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith to them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.
John 19:7And the Jews made answer, We have a law, and by that law it is right for him to be put to death because he said he was the Son of God.the Jews answered him, `We have a law, and according to our law he ought to die, for he made himself Son of God.`The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
John 19:8When this saying came to Pilate's ears his fear became greater;When, therefore, Pilate heard this word, he was the more afraid,When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;
John 19:9And he went again into the Praetorium and said to Jesus, Where do you come from? But Jesus gave him no answer.and entered again to the praetorium, and saith to Jesus, `Whence art thou?` and Jesus gave him no answer. And went again into the judgment-hall, and saith to Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.
John 19:10Then Pilate said to him, You say nothing to me? is it not clear to you that I have power to let you go free and power to put you to death on the cross?Pilate, therefore, saith to him, `To me dost thou not speak? hast thou not known that I have authority to crucify thee, and I have authority to release thee?`Then saith Pilate to him, Speakest thou not to me? knowest thou not, that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?
John 19:11Jesus gave this answer: You would have no power at all over me if it was not given to you by God; so that he who gave me up to you has the greater sin.Jesus answered, `Thou wouldst have no authority against me, if it were not having been given thee from above; because of this, he who is delivering me up to thee hath greater sin.`Jesus answered, Thou couldst have no power against me; except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me to thee hath the greater sin.
John 19:12Hearing this, Pilate had a desire to let him go free, but the Jews said in a loud voice, If you let this man go, you are not Caesar's friend: everyone who makes himself a king goes against Caesar. From this [time] was Pilate seeking to release him, and the Jews were crying out, saying, `If this one thou mayest release, thou art not a friend of Caesar; every one making himself a king, doth speak against Caesar.`And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Cesar's friend. Whoever maketh himself a king, speaketh against Cesar.
John 19:13So when these words came to Pilate's ear, he took Jesus out, seating himself in the judge's seat in a place named in Hebrew, Gabbatha, or the Stone Floor.Pilate, therefore, having heard this word, brought Jesus without and he sat down upon the tribunal to a place called, `Pavement,` and in Hebrew, Gabbatha; When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down on the judgment-seat, in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.
John 19:14(It was the day when they made ready for the Passover; and it was about the sixth hour.) And he said to the Jews, There is your King!and it was the preparation of the passover, and as it were the sixth hour, and he saith to the Jews, `Lo, your king!`And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith to the Jews, Behold your King!
John 19:15Then they gave a loud cry, Away with him! away with him! to the cross! Pilate said to them, Am I to put your King to death on the cross? The chief priests said in answer, We have no king but Caesar.and they cried out, `Take away, take away, crucify him;` Pilate saith to them, `Your king shall I crucify?` the chief priests answered, `We have no king except Caesar.`But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith to them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Cesar.
John 19:16So then he gave him up to them to be put to death on the cross. And they took Jesus away; Then, therefore, he delivered him up to them, that he may be crucified, and they took Jesus and led [him] away,Then therefore he delivered him to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.
John 19:17And he went out with his cross on him to the place which is named Dead Man's Head (in Hebrew, Golgotha):and bearing his cross, he went forth to the place called [Place] of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha; And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew, Golgotha:
John 19:18Where they put him on the cross with two others, one on this side and one on that, and Jesus in the middle.where they crucified him, and with him two others, on this side, and on that side, and Jesus in the midst.Where they crucified him, and two others with him, on each side one, and Jesus in the midst.
John 19:19And Pilate put on the cross a statement in writing. The writing was: JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.And Pilate also wrote a title, and put [it] on the cross, and it was written, `Jesus the Nazarene, the king of the Jews;`And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.
John 19:20The writing was seen by a number of the Jews, for the place where Jesus was put to death on the cross was near the town; and the writing was in Hebrew and Latin and Greek.this title, therefore, read many of the Jews, because the place was nigh to the city where Jesus was crucified, and it was having been written in Hebrew, in Greek, in Roman. Many of the Jews then read this title: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.
John 19:21Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, Do not put, The King of the Jews, but, He said, I am the King of the Jews. The chief priests of the Jews said, therefore, to Pilate, `Write not The king of the Jews, but that one said, I am king of the Jews;`Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.
John 19:22But Pilate made answer, What I have put in writing will not be changed.Pilate answered, `What I have written, I have written.`Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written.
John 19:23And when Jesus was nailed to the cross, the men of the army took his clothing, and made a division of it into four parts, to every man a part, and they took his coat: now the coat was without a join, made out of one bit of cloth. The soldiers, therefore, when they did crucify Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to each soldier a part, also the coat, and the coat was seamless, from the top woven throughout,Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.
John 19:24So they said among themselves, Let this not be cut up, but let us put it to the decision of chance and see who gets it. (They did this so that the Writings might come true, which say, They made a distribution of my clothing among them, and my coat they put to the decision of chance.) This was what the men of the army did.they said, therefore, to one another, `We may not rend it, but cast a lot for it, whose it shall be;` that the Writing might be fulfilled, that is saying, `They divided my garments to themselves, and upon my raiment they did cast a lot;` the soldiers, therefore, indeed, did these things. They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.
John 19:25Now by the side of the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister Mary, the wife of Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene. And there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother`s sister, Mary of Cleopas, and Mary the Magdalene; Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
John 19:26So when Jesus saw his mother and the disciple who was dear to him, he said to his mother, Mother, there is your son!Jesus, therefore, having seen [his] mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he was loving, he saith to his mother, `Woman, lo, thy son;`When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith to his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
John 19:27Then he said to the disciple, There is your mother! And from that hour the disciple took her to his house.afterward he saith to the disciple, `Lo, thy mother;` and from that hour the disciple took her to his own [home].Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.
John 19:28After this, being conscious that all things had now been done so that the Writings might come true, Jesus said, Give me water. After this, Jesus knowing that all things now have been finished, that the Writing may be fulfilled, saith, `I thirst;`After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
John 19:29Now there was a vessel ready, full of bitter wine, and they put a sponge full of it on a stick and put it to his mouth.a vessel, therefore, was placed full of vinegar, and they having filled a sponge with vinegar, and having put [it] around a hyssop stalk, did put [it] to his mouth; Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
John 19:30So when Jesus had taken the wine he said, All is done. And with his head bent he gave up his spirit.when, therefore, Jesus received the vinegar, he said, `It hath been finished;` and having bowed the head, gave up the spirit. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and expired.
John 19:31Now it was the day of getting ready for the Passover, and so that the bodies might not be on the cross on the Sabbath (because the day of that Sabbath was a great day), the Jews made a request to Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. The Jews, therefore, that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, since it was the preparation, (for that sabbath day was a great one,) asked of Pilate that their legs may be broken, and they taken away. The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath, (for that sabbath was a great day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
John 19:32So the men of the army came, and the legs of the first were broken and then of the other who was put to death on the cross with Jesus:The soldiers, therefore, came, and of the first indeed they did break the legs, and of the other who was crucified with him,Then came the soldiers, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who was crucified with him.
John 19:33But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was dead by this time, and so his legs were not broken;and having come to Jesus, when they saw him already having been dead, they did not break his legs; But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they broke not his legs:
John 19:34But one of the men made a wound in his side with a spear, and straight away there came out blood and water.but one of the soldiers with a spear did pierce his side, and immediately there came forth blood and water; But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came out blood and water.
John 19:35And he who saw it has given witness (and his witness is true; he is certain that what he says is true) so that you may have belief.and he who hath seen hath testified, and his testimony is true, and that one hath known that true things he speaketh, that ye also may believe. And he that saw it, testified, and his testimony is true: and he knoweth that he speaketh truth, that ye may believe.
John 19:36These things came about so that the Writings might be true, No bone of his body will be broken. For these things came to pass, that the Writing may be fulfilled, `A bone of him shall not be broken;`For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.
John 19:37And again another verse says, They will see him who was wounded by their spears.and again another Writing saith, `They shall look to him whom they did pierce.`And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.
John 19:38After these things, Joseph of Arimathaea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, made a request to Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate said he might do so. So he went and took away his body. And after these things did Joseph of Arimathea being a disciple of Jesus, but concealed, through the fear of the Jews ask of Pilate, that he may take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave leave; he came, therefore, and took away the body of Jesus,And after this, Joseph of Arimathea (being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews) besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore and took the body of Jesus.
John 19:39And Nicodemus came (he who had first come to Jesus by night) with a roll of myrrh and aloes mixed, about a hundred pounds.and Nicodemus also came who came unto Jesus by night at the first bearing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, as it were, a hundred pounds. And there came also Nicodemus (who at the first came to Jesus by night) and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pound weight.
John 19:40Then they took the body of Jesus, folding linen about it with the spices, as is the way of the Jews when they put the dead to rest. They took, therefore, the body of Jesus, and bound it with linen clothes with the spices, according as it was the custom of the Jews to prepare for burial; Then they took the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen cloths, with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.
John 19:41Now there was a garden near the cross, and in the garden a new place for the dead in which no man had ever been put.and there was in the place where he was crucified a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one was yet laid; Now in the place where he was crucified, there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulcher, in which was never man yet laid.
John 19:42So they put Jesus there, because it was the Jews' day of getting ready for the Passover, and the place was near.there, therefore, because of the preparation of the Jews, because the tomb was nigh, they laid Jesus. There they laid Jesus therefore, because of the Jews' preparation-day, for the sepulcher was nigh at hand.
