John 6:1 | After these things Jesus went away to the other side of the sea of Galilee that is, the sea of Tiberias. | After these things Jesus went away beyond the sea of Galilee (of Tiberias), | After this Jesus went away across the Lake of Galilee (that is, the Lake of Tiberias). |
John 6:2 | And a great number of people went after him because they saw the signs which he did on those who were ill. | and there was following him a great multitude, because they were seeing his signs that he was doing on the ailing; | A vast multitude followed Him, because they witnessed the miracles on the sick which He was constantly performing. |
John 6:3 | Then Jesus went up the mountain and was seated there with his disciples. | and Jesus went up to the mount, and he was there sitting with his disciples, | Then Jesus went up the hill, and sat there with His disciples. |
John 6:4 | Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near. | and the passover was nigh, the feast of the Jews. | The Jewish Festival, the Passover, was at hand. |
John 6:5 | Lifting up his eyes, Jesus saw a great number of people coming to where he was, and he said to Philip, Where may we get bread for all these people? | Jesus then having lifted up [his] eyes and having seen that a great multitude doth come to him, saith unto Philip, `Whence shall we buy loaves, that these may eat?` | And when He looked round and saw an immense crowd coming towards Him, He said to Philip, "Where shall we buy bread for all these people to eat?" |
John 6:6 | This he said, testing him: for he had no doubt what he himself would do. | and this he said, trying him, for he himself had known what he was about to do. | He said this to put Philip to the test, for He Himself knew what He was going to do. |
John 6:7 | Philip made answer, Bread to the value of two hundred pence would not be enough even to give everyone a little. | Philip answered him, `Two hundred denaries` worth of loaves are not sufficient to them, that each of them may receive some little;` | "Seven pounds' worth of bread," replied Philip, "is not enough for them all to get even a scanty meal." |
John 6:8 | One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to Jesus, | one of his disciples Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter saith to him, | One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to Him, |
John 6:9 | There is a boy here with five barley cakes and two fishes: but what is that among such a number? | `There is one little lad here who hath five barley loaves, and two fishes, but these what are they to so many?` | "There is a boy here with five barley loaves and a couple of fish: but what is that among so many?" |
John 6:10 | Jesus said, Let the people be seated. Now there was much grass in that place. And those seated on the grass were about five thousand. | And Jesus said, `Make the men to sit down;` and there was much grass in the place, the men then sat down, in number, as it were, five thousand, | "Make the people sit down," said Jesus. The ground was covered with thick grass; so they sat down, the adult men numbering about 5,000. |
John 6:11 | Then Jesus took the cakes and having given praise to God, he gave them to the people who were seated, and the fishes in the same way, as much as they had need of. | and Jesus took the loaves, and having given thanks he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to those reclining, in like manner, also of the little fishes as much as they wished. | Then Jesus took the loaves, and after giving thanks He distributed them to those who were resting on the ground; and also the fish in like manner as much as they desired. |
John 6:12 | And when they had had enough, Jesus said to his disciples, Take up the broken bits which are over, so that nothing may be wasted. | And when they were filled, he saith to his disciples, `Gather together the broken pieces that are over, that nothing may be lost;` | When all were fully satisfied, He said to His disciples, "Gather up the broken portions that remain over, so that nothing be lost." |
John 6:13 | So they took them up: twelve baskets full of broken bits of the five cakes which were over after the people had had enough. | they gathered together, therefore, and filled twelve hand-baskets with broken pieces, from the five barley loaves that were over to those having eaten. | Accordingly they gathered them up; and with the fragments of the five barley loaves the broken portions that remained over after they had done eating they filled twelve baskets. |
John 6:14 | And when the people saw the sign which he had done, they said, Truly, this is the prophet who is to come into the world. | The men, then, having seen the sign that Jesus did, said `This is truly the Prophet, who is coming to the world;` | Thereupon the people, having seen the miracle He had performed, said, "This is indeed the Prophet who was to come into the world." |
John 6:15 | Now when Jesus saw that the people were about to come and take him by force to make him a king, he went away again up the mountain by himself. | Jesus, therefore, having known that they are about to come, and to take him by force that they may make him king, retired again to the mountain himself alone. | Perceiving, however, that they were about to come and carry Him off by force to make Him a king, Jesus withdrew again up the hill alone by Himself. |
John 6:16 | When evening came the disciples went down to the sea; | And when evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, | When evening came on, His disciples went down to the Lake. |
John 6:17 | And they took a boat and went across the sea in the direction of Capernaum. By then it was dark and still Jesus had not come to them. | and having entered into the boat, they were going over the sea to Capernaum, and darkness had already come, and Jesus had not come unto them, | There they got on board a boat, and pushed off to cross the Lake to Capernaum. By this time it had become dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. |
John 6:18 | The sea was getting rough because of a strong wind which was blowing. | the sea also a great wind blowing was being raised, | The Lake also was getting rough, because a strong wind was blowing. |
John 6:19 | After they had gone three or four miles they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near to the boat; and they had great fear. | having pushed onwards, therefore, about twenty-five or thirty furlongs, they behold Jesus walking on the sea, and coming nigh to the boat, and they were afraid; | When, however, they had rowed three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the water and coming near the boat. |
John 6:20 | But he said to them, It is I, have no fear. | and he saith to them, `I am [he], be not afraid;` | They were terrified; but He called to them. "It is I," He said, "do not be afraid." |
John 6:21 | Then they readily took him into the boat: and straight away the boat was at the land to which they were going. | they were willing then to receive him into the boat, and immediately the boat came unto the land to which they were going. | Then they were willing to take Him on board; and in a moment the boat reached the shore at the point to which they were going. |
John 6:22 | The day after, the people who were on the other side of the sea saw that only one small boat had been there, that Jesus had not gone in that boat with the disciples, but that the disciples had gone away by themselves. | On the morrow, the multitude that was standing on the other side of the sea, having seen that there was no other little boat there except one that into which his disciples entered and that Jesus went not in with his disciples into the little boat, but his disciples went away alone, | Next morning the crowd who were still standing about on the other side of the Lake found that there had been but one small boat there, and they had seen that Jesus did not go on board with His disciples, but that His disciples went away without Him. |
John 6:23 | Some other boats, however, came from Tiberias near to the place where they had taken the bread after the Lord had given praise. | (and other little boats came from Tiberias, nigh the place where they did eat the bread, the Lord having given thanks), | Yet a number of small boats came from Tiberias to the neighbourhood of the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. |
John 6:24 | So when the people saw that Jesus was not there, or his disciples, they got into those boats and went over to Capernaum looking for Jesus. | when therefore the multitude saw that Jesus is not there, nor his disciples, they also themselves did enter into the boats, and came to Capernaum seeking Jesus; | When however the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His disciples were there, they themselves also took boats and came to Capernaum to look for Jesus. |
John 6:25 | And when they came across him on the other side of the sea they said, Rabbi, when did you come here? | and having found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, `Rabbi, when hast thou come hither?` | So when they had crossed the Lake and had found Him, they asked Him, "Rabbi, when did you come here?" |
John 6:26 | Jesus, answering them, said, Truly I say to you, You come after me, not because you saw signs, but because you were given the bread and had enough. | Jesus answered them and said, `Verily, verily, I say to you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw signs, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were satisfied; | "In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that you are searching for me not because you have seen miracles, but because you ate the loaves and had a hearty meal. |
John 6:27 | Let your work not be for the food which comes to an end, but for the food which goes on for eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you, for on him has God the Father put his mark. | work not for the food that is perishing, but for the food that is remaining to life age-during, which the Son of Man will give to you, for him did the Father seal [even] God.` | Bestow your pains not on the food which perishes, but on the food that remains unto the Life of the Ages that food which will be the Son of Man's gift to you; for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal." |
John 6:28 | Then they said to him, How may we do the works of God? | They said therefore unto him, `What may we do that we may work the works of God?` | "What are we to do," they asked, "in order to carry out the things that God requires?" |
John 6:29 | Jesus, answering, said to them, This is to do the work of God: to have faith in him whom God has sent. | Jesus answered and said to them, `This is the work of God, that ye may believe in him whom He did send.` | "This," replied Jesus, "is above all the thing that God requires that you should be believers in Him whom He has sent." |
John 6:30 | So they said, What sign do you give us, so that we may see and have faith in you? What do you do? | They said therefore to him, `What sign, then, dost thou, that we may see and may believe thee? what dost thou work? | "What miracle then," they asked, "do you perform for us to see and become believers in you? What do you *do*? |
John 6:31 | Our fathers had the manna in the waste land, as the Writings say, He gave them bread from heaven. | our fathers the manna did eat in the wilderness, according as it is having been written, Bread out of the heaven He gave them to eat.` | Our forefathers ate the manna in the Desert, as it is written, `He gave them bread out of Heaven to eat'." |
John 6:32 | Jesus then said to them, Truly I say to you, What Moses gave you was not the bread from heaven; it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. | Jesus, therefore, said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread out of the heaven; but my Father doth give you the true bread out of the heaven; | "In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that Moses did not give you the bread out of Heaven, but my Father is giving you the bread the true bread out of Heaven. |
John 6:33 | The bread of God is the bread which comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world. | for the bread of God is that which is coming down out of the heaven, and giving life to the world.` | For God's bread is that which comes down out of Heaven and gives Life to the world." |
John 6:34 | Ah, Lord, they said, give us that bread for ever! | They said, therefore, unto him, `Sir, always give us this bread.` | "Sir," they said, "always give us that bread." |
John 6:35 | And this was the answer of Jesus: I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never be in need of food, and he who has faith in me will never be in need of drink. | And Jesus said to them, `I am the bread of the life; he who is coming unto me may not hunger, and he who is believing in me may not thirst at any time; | "I am the bread of Life," replied Jesus; "he who comes to me shall never hunger, and he who believes in me shall never, never thirst. |
John 6:36 | But it is as I said to you: you have seen me, and still you have no faith. | but I said to you, that ye also have seen me, and ye believe not; | But it is as I have said to you: you have seen me and yet you do not believe. |
John 6:37 | Whatever the Father gives to me will come to me; and I will not send away anyone who comes to me. | all that the Father doth give to me will come unto me; and him who is coming unto me, I may in no wise cast without, | Every one whom the Father gives me will come to me, and him who comes to me I will never on any account drive away. |
John 6:38 | For I have come down from heaven, not to do my pleasure, but the pleasure of him who sent me. | because I have come down out of the heaven, not that I may do my will, but the will of Him who sent me. | For I have left Heaven and have come down to earth not to seek my own pleasure, but to do the will of Him who sent me. |
John 6:39 | And this is the pleasure of him who sent me, that I am not to let out of my hands anything which he has given me, but I am to give it new life on the last day. | `And this is the will of the Father who sent me, that all that He hath given to me I may not lose of it, but may raise it up in the last day; | And this is the will of Him who sent me, that of all that He has given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it to life on the last day. |
John 6:40 | This, I say, is my Father's pleasure, that everyone who sees the Son and has faith in him may have eternal life: and I will take him up on the last day. | and this is the will of Him who sent me, that every one who is beholding the Son, and is believing in him, may have life age-during, and I will raise him up in the last day.` | For this is my Father's will, that every one who fixes his gaze on the Son of God and believes in Him should have the Life of the Ages, and I will raise him to life on the last day." |
John 6:41 | Now the Jews said bitter things about Jesus because of his words, I am the bread which came down from heaven. | The Jews, therefore, were murmuring at him, because he said, `I am the bread that came down out of the heaven;` | Now the Jews began to find fault about Him because of His claiming to be the bread which came down out of Heaven. |
John 6:42 | And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we have seen? How is it then that he now says, I have come down from heaven? | and they said, `Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we have known? how then saith this one Out of the heaven I have come down?` | They kept asking, "Is not this man Joseph's son? Is he not Jesus, whose father and mother we know? What does he mean by now saying, `I have come down out of Heaven'?" |
John 6:43 | Jesus made answer and said, Do not say things against me, one to another. | Jesus answered, therefore, and said to them, `Murmur not one with another; | "Do not thus find fault among yourselves," replied Jesus; |
John 6:44 | No man is able to come to me if the Father who sent me does not give him the desire to come: and I will take him up from the dead on the last day. | no one is able to come unto me, if the Father who sent me may not draw him, and I will raise him up in the last day; | "no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him; then I will raise him to life on the last day. |
John 6:45 | The writings of the prophets say, And they will all have teaching from God. Everyone whose ears have been open to the teaching of the Father comes to me. | it is having been written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God; every one therefore who heard from the Father, and learned, cometh to me; | It stands written in the Prophets, `And they shall all of them be taught by God'. Every one who listens to the Father and learns from Him comes to me. |
John 6:46 | Not that anyone has ever seen the Father; only he who is from God, he has seen the Father. | not that any one hath seen the Father, except he who is from God, he hath seen the Father. | No one has ever seen the Father except Him who is from God. He has seen the Father. |
John 6:47 | Truly I say to you, He who has faith in me has eternal life. | `Verily, verily, I say to you, He who is believing in me, hath life age-during; | "In most solemn truth I tell you that he who believes has the Life of the Ages. |
John 6:48 | I am the bread of life. | I am the bread of the life; | I am the bread of Life. |
John 6:49 | Your fathers took the manna in the waste land and they are dead. | your fathers did eat the manna in the wilderness, and they died; | Your forefathers ate the manna in the Desert, and they died. |
John 6:50 | The bread which comes from heaven is such bread that a man may take it for food and never see death. | this is the bread that out of the heaven is coming down, that any one may eat of it, and not die. | Here is the bread that comes down out of Heaven that a man may eat it and not die. |
John 6:51 | I am the living bread which has come from heaven: if any man takes this bread for food he will have life for ever: and more than this, the bread which I will give is my flesh which I will give for the life of the world. | `I am the living bread that came down out of the heaven; if any one may eat of this bread he shall live to the age; and the bread also that I will give is my flesh, that I will give for the life of the world.` | I am the living bread come down out of Heaven. If a man eats this bread, he shall live for ever. Moreover the bread which I will give is my flesh given for the life of the world." |
John 6:52 | Then the Jews had an angry discussion among themselves, saying, How is it possible for this man to give us his flesh for food? | The Jews, therefore, were striving with one another, saying, `How is this one able to give us [his] flesh to eat?` | This led to an angry debate among the Jews. "How can this man," they argued, "give us his flesh to eat?" |
John 6:53 | Then Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, If you do not take the flesh of the Son of man for food, and if you do not take his blood for drink, you have no life in you. | Jesus, therefore, said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, If ye may not eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and may not drink his blood, ye have no life in yourselves; | "In most solemn truth I tell you," said Jesus, "that unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no Life in you. |
John 6:54 | He who takes my flesh for food and my blood for drink has eternal life: and I will take him up from the dead at the last day. | he who is eating my flesh, and is drinking my blood, hath life age-during, and I will raise him up in the last day; | He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has the Life of the Ages, and I will raise him up on the last day. |
John 6:55 | My flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. | for my flesh truly is food, and my blood truly is drink; | For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. |
John 6:56 | He who takes my flesh for food and my blood for drink is in me and I in him. | he who is eating my flesh, and is drinking my blood, doth remain in me, and I in him. | He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in union with me, and I remain in union with him. |
John 6:57 | As the living Father has sent me, and I have life because of the Father, even so he who takes me for his food will have life because of me. | `According as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, he also who is eating me, even that one shall live because of me; | As the ever-living Father has sent me, and I live because of the Father, so also he who eats me will live because of me. |
John 6:58 | This is the bread which has come down from heaven. It is not like the food which your fathers had: they took of the manna, and are dead; but he who takes this bread for food will have life for ever. | this is the bread that came down out of the heaven; not as your fathers did eat the manna, and died; he who is eating this bread shall live to the age.` | This is the bread which came down out of Heaven; it is unlike that which your forefathers ate for they ate and yet died. He who eats this bread shall live for ever." |
John 6:59 | Jesus said these things in the Synagogue while he was teaching at Capernaum. | These things he said in a synagogue, teaching in Capernaum; | Jesus said all this in the synagogue while teaching at Capernaum. |
John 6:60 | Then, hearing this, a number of his disciples said, This is a hard saying; who is able to take in such teaching? | many, therefore, of his disciples having heard, said, `This word is hard; who is able to hear it?` | Many therefore of His disciples, when they heard it, said, "This is hard to accept. Who can listen to such teaching?" |
John 6:61 | When Jesus became conscious that his disciples were protesting about what he said, he said to them, Does this give you trouble? | And Jesus having known in himself that his disciples are murmuring about this, said to them, `Doth this stumble you? | But, knowing in Himself that His disciples were dissatisfied about it, Jesus asked them, |
John 6:62 | What then will you say if you see the Son of man going up to where he was before? | if then ye may behold the Son of Man going up where he was before? | "Does this seem incredible to you? What then if you were to see the Son of Man ascending again where He was before? |
John 6:63 | The spirit is the life giver; the flesh is of no value: the words which I have said to you are spirit and they are life. | the spirit it is that is giving life; the flesh doth not profit anything; the sayings that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life; | It is the spirit which gives Life. The flesh confers no benefit whatever. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and are Life. |
John 6:64 | But still some of you have no faith. For it was clear to Jesus from the first who they were who had no faith, and who it was who would be false to him. | but there are certain of you who do not believe;` for Jesus had known from the beginning who they are who are not believing, and who is he who will deliver him up, | But there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were that did not believe, and who it was that would betray Him. |
John 6:65 | And he said, This is why I said to you, No man is able to come to me if he is not given the power to do so by the Father. | and he said, `Because of this I have said to you No one is able to come unto me, if it may not have been given him from my Father.` | So He added, "That is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it be granted him by the Father." |
John 6:66 | Because of what he said, a number of the disciples went back and would no longer go with him. | From this [time] many of his disciples went away backward, and were no more walking with him, | Thereupon many of His disciples left Him and went away, and no longer associated with Him. |
John 6:67 | So Jesus said to the twelve, Have you a desire to go away? | Jesus, therefore, said to the twelve, `Do ye also wish to go away?` | Jesus therefore appealed to the Twelve. "Will you go also?" He asked. |
John 6:68 | Then Simon Peter gave this answer: Lord, to whom are we to go? you have the words of eternal life; | Simon Peter, therefore, answered him, `Sir, unto whom shall we go? thou hast sayings of life age-during; | "Master," replied Simon Peter, "to whom shall we go? Your teachings tell us of the Life of the Ages. |
John 6:69 | And we have faith and are certain that you are the Holy One of God. | and we have believed, and we have known, that thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.` | And we have come to believe and know that *you* are indeed the Holy One of God." |
John 6:70 | Then Jesus said, Did I not make a selection of you, the twelve, and one of you is a son of the Evil One? | Jesus answered them, `Did not I choose you the twelve? and of you one is a devil. | "Did not I choose you the Twelve?" said Jesus, "and even of you one is a devil." |
John 6:71 | He was talking of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. It was he who was to be false to Jesus one of the twelve. | And he spake of Judas, Simon`s [son], Iscariot, for he was about to deliver him up, being one of the twelve. | He alluded to Judas, the son of Simon the Iscariot. For he it was who, though one of the Twelve, was afterwards to betray Him. |
