John 8:1 | But Jesus went to the Mountain of Olives. | And at dawn he came again to the temple, | but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. |
John 8:2 | And early in the morning he came again into the Temple and all the people came to him and he was seated teaching them. | and all the people were coming unto him, and having sat down, he was teaching them; | At break of day however He returned to the Temple, and there the people came to Him in crowds. He seated Himself; |
John 8:3 | Now the scribes and Pharisees came, with a woman who had been taken in the act of sinning against the married relation; | and the scribes and the Pharisees bring unto him a woman having been taken in adultery, and having set her in the midst, | and was teaching them when the Scribes and the Pharisees brought to Him a woman who had been found committing adultery. They made her stand in the centre of the court, and they put the case to Him. |
John 8:4 | And putting her forward, they said to him, Master, this woman has been taken in the very act of sinning against the married relation. | they say to him, `Teacher, this woman was taken in the very crime committing adultery, | "Rabbi," they said, "this woman has been found in the very act of committing adultery. |
John 8:5 | Now in the law Moses gave directions that such women were to be stoned; what do you say about it? | and in the law, Moses did command us that such be stoned; thou, therefore, what dost thou say?` | Now, in the Law, Moses has ordered us to stone such women to death. But what do you say?" |
John 8:6 | They said this, testing him, so that they might have something against him. But Jesus, with his head bent down, made letters on the floor with his finger. | and this they said, trying him, that they might have to accuse him. And Jesus, having stooped down, with the finger he was writing on the ground, | They asked this in order to put Him to the test, so that they might have some charge to bring against Him. But Jesus leant forward and began to write with His finger on the ground. |
John 8:7 | But when they went on with their questions, he got up and said to them, Let him among you who is without sin be the first to send a stone at her. | and when they continued asking him, having bent himself back, he said unto them, `The sinless of you let him first cast the stone at her;` | When however they persisted with their question, He raised His head and said to them, "Let the sinless man among you be the first to throw a stone at her." |
John 8:8 | And again, with bent head, he made letters on the floor. | and again having stooped down, he was writing on the ground, | Then He leant forward again, and again began to write on the ground. |
John 8:9 | And when his words came to their ears, they went out one by one, starting with the oldest even to the last, because they were conscious of what was in their hearts: and Jesus was there by himself with the woman before him. | and they having heard, and by the conscience being convicted, were going forth one by one, having begun from the elders unto the last; and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. | They listened to Him, and then, beginning with the eldest, took their departure, one by one, till all were gone. And Jesus was left behind alone and the woman in the centre of the court. |
John 8:10 | Then Jesus got up, and seeing nobody but the woman, he said to her, Where are the men who said things against you? did no one give a decision against you? | And Jesus having bent himself back, and having seen no one but the woman, said to her, `Woman, where are those thine accusers? did no one pass sentence upon thee?` | Then, raising His head, Jesus said to her, "Where are they? Has no one condemned you?" |
John 8:11 | And she said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said, And I do not give a decision against you: go, and never do wrong again.] | and she said, `No one, Sir;` and Jesus said to her, `Neither do I pass sentence on thee; be going on, and no more sin.` | "No one, Sir," she replied. "And *I* do not condemn you either," said Jesus; "go, and from this time do not sin any more."] |
John 8:12 | Then again Jesus said to them, I am the light of the world; he who comes with me will not be walking in the dark but will have the light of life. | Again, therefore, Jesus spake to them, saying, `I am the light of the world; he who is following me shall not walk in the darkness, but he shall have the light of the life.` | Once more Jesus addressed them. "I am the Light of the world," He said; "the man who follows me shall certainly not walk in the dark, but shall have the light of Life." |
John 8:13 | So the Pharisees said to him, The witness you give is about yourself: your witness is not true. | The Pharisees, therefore, said to him, `Thou of thyself dost testify, thy testimony is not true;` | "You are giving testimony about yourself," said the Pharisees; "your testimony is not true." |
John 8:14 | Jesus said in answer, Even if I give witness about myself, my witness is true, because I have knowledge of where I came from and where I am going; but you have no knowledge of where I come from or of where I am going. | Jesus answered and said to them, `And if I testify of myself my testimony is true, because I have known whence I came, and whither I go, and ye ye have not known whence I come, or whither I go. | "Even if I am giving testimony about myself," replied Jesus, "my testimony is true; for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you know neither of these two things. |
John 8:15 | You are judging from what you see; I am judging no man. | `Ye according to the flesh do judge; I do not judge any one, | You judge according to appearances: I am judging no one. |
John 8:16 | Even if I am judging, my decision is right, because I am not by myself with me is the Father who sent me. | and even if I do judge my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent me; | And even if I do judge, my judgement is just; for I am not alone, but the Father who sent me is with me. |
John 8:17 | Even in your law it is said that the witness of two men is true. | and also in your law it hath been written, that the testimony of two men are true; | In your own Law, too, it is written that the testimony of two men is true. |
John 8:18 | I give witness about myself and the Father who sent me gives witness about me. | I am [one] who is testifying of myself, and the Father who sent me doth testify of me.` | I am one giving testimony about myself, and the Father who sent me gives testimony about me." |
John 8:19 | Then they said to him, Where is your Father? Jesus said in answer, You have no knowledge of me or of my Father: if you had knowledge of me you would have knowledge of my Father. | They said, therefore, to him, `Where is thy father?` Jesus answered, `Ye have neither known me nor my Father: if me ye had known, my Father also ye had known.` | "Where is your Father?" they asked. "You know my Father as little as you know me." He replied; "if you knew me, you would know my Father also." |
John 8:20 | Jesus said these words in the place where the offerings were stored, while he was teaching in the Temple: but no man took him because his time was still to come. | These sayings spake Jesus in the treasury, teaching in the temple, and no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come; | These sayings He uttered in the Treasury, while teaching in the Temple; yet no one arrested Him, because His time had not yet come. |
John 8:21 | Then he said to them again, I am going away and you will be looking for me, but death will overtake you in your sins. It is not possible for you to come where I am going. | therefore said Jesus again to them, `I go away, and ye will seek me, and in your sin ye shall die; whither I go away, ye are not able to come.` | Again He said to them, "I am going away. Then you will try to find me, but you will die in your sins. Where I am going, it is impossible for you to come." |
John 8:22 | So the Jews said, Will he take his life? Is that why he says, Where I go it is not possible for you to come? | The Jews, therefore, said, `Will he kill himself, because he saith, Whither I go away, ye are not able to come?` | The Jews began to ask one another, "Is he going to kill himself, do you think, that he says, `Where I am going, it is impossible for you to come'?" |
John 8:23 | And he said to them, You are of the earth; I am from heaven: you are of this world; I am not of this world. | and he said to them, `Ye are from beneath, I am from above; ye are of this world, I am not of this world; | "You," He continued, "are from below, I am from above: you are of this present world, I am not of this present world. |
John 8:24 | For this reason I said to you that death will overtake you in your sins: for if you have not faith that I am he, death will come to you while you are in your sins. | I said, therefore, to you, that ye shall die in your sins, for if ye may not believe that I am [he], ye shall die in your sins.` | That is why I told you that you will die in your sins; for, unless you believe that I am He, that is what will happen." |
John 8:25 | Then they said to him, Who are you? Jesus said, What I said to you from the first. | They said, therefore, to him, `Thou who art thou?` and Jesus said to them, `Even what I did speak of to you at the beginning; | "You who are you?" they asked. "How is it that I am speaking to you at all?" replied Jesus. |
John 8:26 | I have much to say about you and against you: but he who sent me is true and what he has said to me I say to the world. | many things I have to speak concerning you and to judge, but He who sent me is true, and I what things I heard from Him these I say to the world.` | "Many things I have to speak and to judge concerning you. But He who sent me is true, and the things which I have heard from Him are those which I have come into the world to speak." |
John 8:27 | They did not see that his words were about the Father. | They knew not that of the Father he spake to them; | They did not perceive that He was speaking to them of the Father. |
John 8:28 | So Jesus said, When the Son of man has been lifted up by you, then it will be clear to you who I am, and that I do nothing of myself, but say as the Father gave me teaching. | Jesus, therefore, said to them, `When ye may lift up the Son of Man then ye will know that I am [he]; and of myself I do nothing, but according as my Father did teach me, these things I speak; | So Jesus added, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He. Of myself I do nothing; but as the Father has taught me, so I speak. |
John 8:29 | He who sent me is with me; he has not gone from me, because at all times I do the things which are pleasing to him. | and He who sent me is with me; the Father did not leave me alone, because I, the things pleasing to Him, do always.` | And He who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone: for I do always what is pleasing to Him." |
John 8:30 | When he said this a number came to have faith in him. | As he is speaking these things, many believed in him; | As He thus spoke, many became believers in Him. |
John 8:31 | Then Jesus said to the Jews who had faith in him, If you keep my word, then you are truly my disciples; | Jesus, therefore, said unto the Jews who believed in him, `If ye may remain in my word, truly my disciples ye are, and ye shall know the truth, | Jesus therefore said to those of the Jews who had now believed in Him, "As for you, if you hold fast to my teaching, then you are truly my disciples; |
John 8:32 | And you will have knowledge of what is true, and that will make you free. | and the truth shall make you free.` | and you shall know the Truth, and the Truth will make you free." |
John 8:33 | They said to him in answer, We are Abraham's seed and have never been any man's servant: why do you say, You will become free? | They answered him, `Seed of Abraham we are; and to no one have we been servants at any time; how dost thou say Ye shall become free?` | "We are descendants of Abraham," they answered, "and have never at any time been in slavery to any one. What do those words of yours mean, `You shall become free'?" |
John 8:34 | And this was the answer Jesus gave them: Truly I say to you, Everyone who does evil is the servant of sin. | Jesus answered them, `Verily, verily, I say to you Every one who is committing sin, is a servant of the sin, | "In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that every one who commits sin is the slave of sin. |
John 8:35 | Now the servant does not go on living in the house for ever, but the son does. | and the servant doth not remain in the house to the age, the son doth remain to the age; | Now a slave does not remain permanently in his master's house, but a son does. |
John 8:36 | If then the son makes you free, you will be truly free. | if then the son may make you free, in reality ye shall be free. | If then the Son shall make you free, you will be free indeed. |
John 8:37 | I am conscious that you are Abraham's seed; but you have a desire to put me to death because my word has no place in you. | `I have known that ye are seed of Abraham, but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you; | You are descendants of Abraham, I know; but you want to kill me, because my teaching gains no ground within you. |
John 8:38 | I say the things which I have seen in my Father's house: and you do the things which come to you from your father's house. | I that which I have seen with my Father do speak, and ye, therefore, that which ye have seen with your father ye do.` | The words I speak are those I have learnt in the presence of the Father. Therefore you also should do what you have heard from your father." |
John 8:39 | In answer they said to him, Our father is Abraham. Jesus said to them, If you were Abraham's children you would do what Abraham did. | They answered and said to him, `Our father is Abraham;` Jesus saith to them, `If children of Abraham ye were, the works of Abraham ye were doing; | "Our father is Abraham," they said. "If you were Abraham's children," replied Jesus, "it is Abraham's deeds that you would be doing. |
John 8:40 | But now you have a desire to put me to death, a man who has said to you what is true, as I had it from God: Abraham did not do that. | and now, ye seek to kill me a man who hath spoken to you the truth I heard from God; this Abraham did not; | But, in fact, you are longing to kill me, a man who has spoken to you the truth which I have heard from God. Abraham did not do that. |
John 8:41 | You are doing the works of your father. They said to him, We are true sons of Abraham; we have one Father, who is God. | ye do the works of your father.` They said, therefore, to him, `We of whoredom have not been born; one Father we have God;` | You are doing the deeds of your father." "We," they replied, "are not illegitimate children. We have one Father, namely God." |
John 8:42 | Jesus said to them, If God was your Father you would have love for me, because it was from God I came and am here. I did not come of myself, but he sent me. | Jesus then said to them, `If God were your father, ye were loving me, for I came forth from God, and am come; for neither have I come of myself, but He sent me; | "If God were your Father," said Jesus, "you would love me; for it is from God that I came and I am now here. I have not come of myself, but *He* sent me. |
John 8:43 | Why are my words not clear to you? It is because your ears are shut to my teaching. | wherefore do ye not know my speech? because ye are not able to hear my word. | How is it you do not understand me when I speak? It is because you cannot bear to listen to my words. |
John 8:44 | You are the children of your father the Evil One and it is your pleasure to do his desires. From the first he was a taker of life; and he did not go in the true way because there is no true thing in him. When he says what is false, it is natural to him, for he is false and the father of what is false. | `Ye are of a father the devil, and the desires of your father ye will to do; he was a man-slayer from the beginning, and in the truth he hath not stood, because there is no truth in him; when one may speak the falsehood, of his own he speaketh, because he is a liar also his father. | The father whose sons you are is the Devil; and you desire to do what gives him pleasure. *He* was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand firm in the truth for there is no truth in him. Whenever he utters his lie, he utters it out of his own store; for he is a liar, and the father of lies. |
John 8:45 | But because I say what is true, you have no belief in me. | `And because I say the truth, ye do not believe me. | But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me. |
John 8:46 | Which of you is able truly to say that I am a sinner? If I say what is true, why have you no belief in me? | Who of you doth convict me of sin? and if I speak truth, wherefore do ye not believe me? | Which of *you* convicts me of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me? |
John 8:47 | He who is a child of God gives ear to the words of God: your ears are not open to them because you are not from God. | he who is of God, the sayings of God he doth hear; because of this ye do not hear, because of God ye are not.` | He who is a child of God listens to God's words. You do not listen to them: and why? It is because you are not God's children." |
John 8:48 | The Jews said to him in answer, Are we not right in saying that you are of Samaria and have an evil spirit? | The Jews, therefore, answered and said to him, `Do we not say well, that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon?` | "Are we not right," answered the Jews, "in saying that you are a Samaritan and are possessed by a demon?" |
John 8:49 | And this was the answer of Jesus: I have not an evil spirit; but I give honour to my Father and you do not give honour to me. | Jesus answered, `I have not a demon, but I honour my Father, and ye dishonour me; | "I am not possessed by a demon," replied Jesus. "On the contrary I honour my Father, and you dishonour me. |
John 8:50 | I, however, am not in search of glory for myself: there is One who is searching for it and he is judge. | and I do not seek my own glory; there is who is seeking and is judging; | I, however, am not aiming at glory for myself: there is One who aims at glory for me and who judges. |
John 8:51 | Truly I say to you, If a man keeps my word he will never see death. | verily, verily, I say to you, If any one may keep my word, death he may not see to the age.` | In most solemn truth I tell you that if any one shall have obeyed my teaching he shall in no case ever see death." |
John 8:52 | The Jews said to him, Now we are certain that you have an evil spirit. Abraham is dead, and the prophets are dead; and you say, If a man keeps my word he will never see death. | The Jews, therefore, said to him, `Now we have known that thou hast a demon; Abraham did die, and the prophets, and thou dost say, If any one may keep my word, he shall not taste of death to the age! | "Now," exclaimed the Jews, "we know that you are possessed by a demon. Abraham died, and so did the Prophets, and yet *you* say, `If any one shall have obeyed my teaching, he shall in no case ever taste death.' |
John 8:53 | Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? and the prophets are dead: who do you say that you are? | Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died; whom dost thou make thyself?` | Are you really greater than our forefather Abraham? For he died. And the prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?" |
John 8:54 | Jesus said in answer, If I take glory for myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father who gives me glory, of whom you say that he is your God. | Jesus answered, `If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing; it is my Father who is glorifying me, of whom ye say that He is your God; | "Were I to glorify myself," answered Jesus, "I should have no real glory. There is One who glorifies me namely my Father, who you say is your God. |
John 8:55 | You have no knowledge of him, but I have knowledge of him; and if I said I have no knowledge of him I would be talking falsely like you: but I have full knowledge of him, and I keep his word. | and ye have not known Him, and I have known Him, and if I say that I have not known Him, I shall be like you speaking falsely; but I have known Him, and His word I keep; | You do not know Him, but I know Him perfectly; and were I to deny my knowledge of Him, I should resemble you, and be a liar. On the contrary I do know Him, and I obey His commands. |
John 8:56 | Your father Abraham was full of joy at the hope of seeing my day: he saw it and was glad. | Abraham, your father, was glad that he might see my day; and he saw, and did rejoice.` | Abraham your forefather exulted in the hope of seeing my day: and he saw it, and was glad." |
John 8:57 | Then the Jews said to him, You are not fifty years old; have you seen Abraham? | The Jews, therefore, said unto him, `Thou art not yet fifty years old, and Abraham hast thou seen?` | "You are not yet fifty years old," cried the Jews, "and have you seen Abraham?" |
John 8:58 | Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, Before Abraham came into being, I am. | Jesus said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, Before Abraham`s coming I am;` | "In most solemn truth," answered Jesus, "I tell you that before Abraham came into existence, I am." |
John 8:59 | So they took up stones to send at him: but Jesus got secretly out of their way and went out of the Temple. | they took up, therefore, stones that they may cast at him, but Jesus hid himself, and went forth out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by. | Thereupon they took up stones with which to stone Him, but He hid Himself and went away out of the Temple. |
