Matthew 4:1

Then Jesus was sent by the Spirit into the waste land to be tested by the Evil One.

Then Jesus was led up to the wilderness by the Spirit, to be tempted by the Devil,

At that time Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the Desert in order to be tempted by the Devil.

Matthew 4:2

And after going without food for forty days and forty nights, he was in need of it.

and having fasted forty days and forty nights, afterwards he did hunger.

There He fasted for forty days and nights; and after that He suffered from hunger.

Matthew 4:3

And the Evil One came and said to him, If you are the Son of God, give the word for these stones to become bread.

And the Tempter having come to him said, `If Son thou art of God speak that these stones may become loaves.`

So the Tempter came and said, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to turn into loaves."

Matthew 4:4

But he made answer and said, It is in the Writings, Bread is not man's only need, but every word which comes out of the mouth of God.

But he answering said, `It hath been written, Not upon bread alone doth man live, but upon every word coming forth from the mouth of God.`

"It is written," replied Jesus, "`It is not on bread alone that a man shall live, but on whatsoever God shall appoint.'"

Matthew 4:5

Then the Evil One took him to the holy town; and he put him on the highest point of the Temple and said to him,

Then doth the Devil take him to the [holy] city, and doth set him on the pinnacle of the temple,

Then the Devil took Him to the Holy City and caused Him to stand on the roof of the Temple,

Matthew 4:6

If you are the Son of God, let yourself go down; for it is in the Writings, He will give his angels care over you; and, In their hands they will keep you up, so that your foot may not be crushed against a stone.

and saith to him, `If Son thou art of God cast thyself down, for it hath been written, that, His messengers He shall charge concerning thee, and on hands they shall bear thee up, that thou mayest not dash on a stone thy foot.`

and said, "If you are God's Son, throw yourself down; for it is written, "`To His angels He will give orders concerning thee, and on their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any moment thou shouldst strike thy foot against a stone.'"

Matthew 4:7

Jesus said to him, Again it is in the Writings, You may not put the Lord your God to the test.

Jesus said to him again, `It hath been written, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.`

"Again it is written," replied Jesus, "`Thou shalt not put the Lord thy God to the proof.'"

Matthew 4:8

Again, the Evil One took him up to a very high mountain, and let him see all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them;

Again doth the Devil take him to a very high mount, and doth shew to him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them,

Then the Devil took Him to the top of an exceedingly lofty mountain, from which he caused Him to see all the Kingdoms of the world and their splendour,

Matthew 4:9

And he said to him, All these things will I give you, if you will go down on your face and give me worship.

and saith to him, `All these to thee I will give, if falling down thou mayest bow to me.`

and said to Him, "All this I will give you, if you will kneel down and do me homage."

Matthew 4:10

Then said Jesus to him, Away, Satan: for it is in the Writings, Give worship to the Lord your God and be his servant only.

Then saith Jesus to him, `Go Adversary, for it hath been written, The Lord thy God thou shalt bow to, and Him only thou shalt serve.`

"Begone, Satan!" Jesus replied; "for it is written, `To the Lord thy God thou shalt do homage, and to Him alone shalt thou render worship.'"

Matthew 4:11

Then the Evil One went away from him, and angels came and took care of him.

Then doth the Devil leave him, and lo, messengers came and were ministering to him.

Thereupon the Devil left Him, and angels at once came and ministered to Him.

Matthew 4:12

Now when it came to his ears that John had been put in prison, he went away to Galilee;

And Jesus having heard that John was delivered up, did withdraw to Galilee,

Now when Jesus heard that John was thrown into prison, He withdrew into Galilee,

Matthew 4:13

And going away from Nazareth, he came and made his living-place in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the country of Zebulun and Naphtali:

and having left Nazareth, having come, he dwelt at Capernaum that is by the sea, in the borders of Zebulun and Naphtalim,

and leaving Nazareth He went and settled at Capernaum, a town by the Lake on the frontiers of Zebulun and Naphtali,

Matthew 4:14

So that the word of the prophet Isaiah might come true,

that it might be fulfilled that was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying,

in order that these words, spoken through the Prophet Isaiah, might be fulfilled,

Matthew 4:15

The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, by the way of the sea, the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles,

`Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations!

"Zebulun's land and Naphtali's land; the road by the Lake; the country beyond the Jordan; Galilee of the Nations!

Matthew 4:16

The people who were in the dark saw a great light, and to those in the land of the shade of death did the dawn come up.

the people that is sitting in darkness saw a great light, and to those sitting in a region and shadow of death light arose to them.`

The people who were dwelling in darkness have seen a brilliant light; and on those who were dwelling in the region of the shadow of death, on them light has dawned."

Matthew 4:17

From that time Jesus went about preaching and saying, Let your hearts be turned from sin, for the kingdom of heaven is near.

From that time began Jesus to proclaim and to say, `Reform ye, for come nigh hath the reign of the heavens.`

From that time Jesus began to preach. "Repent," He said, "for the Kingdom of the Heavens is now close at hand."

Matthew 4:18

And when he was walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, whose other name was Peter, and Andrew, his brother, who were putting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.

And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon named Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a drag into the sea for they were fishers

And walking along the shore of the Lake of Galilee He saw two brothers Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew throwing a drag-net into the Lake; for they were fishers.

Matthew 4:19

And he said to them, Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.

and he saith to them, `Come ye after me, and I will make you fishers of men,`

And He said to them, "Come and follow me, and I will make you fishers of men."

Matthew 4:20

And straight away they let go the nets and went after him.

and they, immediately, having left the nets, did follow him.

So they immediately left their nets and followed Him. As He went further on,

Matthew 4:21

And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James, the son of Zebedee, and John, his brother, in the boat with their father, stitching up their nets; and he said, Come.

And having advanced thence, he saw other two brothers, James of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, refitting their nets, and he called them,

He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zabdi and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zabdi mending their nets; and He called them.

Matthew 4:22

And they went straight from the boat and their father and came after him.

and they, immediately, having left the boat and their father, did follow him.

And they at once left the boat and their father, and followed Him.

Matthew 4:23

And Jesus went about in all Galilee, teaching in their Synagogues and preaching the good news of the kingdom, and making well those who were ill with any disease among the people.

And Jesus was going about all Galilee teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the reign, and healing every disease, and every malady among the people,

Then Jesus travelled through all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the Good News of the Kingdom, and curing every kind of disease and infirmity among the people.

Matthew 4:24

And news of him went out through all Syria; and they took to him all who were ill with different diseases and pains, those having evil spirits and those who were off their heads, and those who had no power of moving. And he made them well.

and his fame went forth to all Syria, and they brought to him all having ailments, pressed with manifold sicknesses and pains, and demoniacs, and lunatics, and paralytics, and he healed them.

Thus His fame spread through all Syria; and they brought all the sick to Him, the people who were suffering from various diseases and pains demoniacs, epileptics, paralytics; and He cured them.

Matthew 4:25

And there went after him great numbers from Galilee and Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judaea and from the other side of Jordan.

And there followed him many multitudes from Galilee, and Decapolis, and Jerusalem, and Judea, and beyond the Jordan.

And great crowds followed Him, coming from Galilee, from the Ten Towns, from Jerusalem, and from beyond the district on the other side of the Jordan.
