Matthew 4:1 | Then Jesus was sent by the Spirit into the waste land to be tested by the Evil One. | Then Jesus was led up to the wilderness by the Spirit, to be tempted by the Devil, | At that time Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the Desert in order to be tempted by the Devil. |
Matthew 4:2 | And after going without food for forty days and forty nights, he was in need of it. | and having fasted forty days and forty nights, afterwards he did hunger. | There He fasted for forty days and nights; and after that He suffered from hunger. |
Matthew 4:3 | And the Evil One came and said to him, If you are the Son of God, give the word for these stones to become bread. | And the Tempter having come to him said, `If Son thou art of God speak that these stones may become loaves.` | So the Tempter came and said, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to turn into loaves." |
Matthew 4:4 | But he made answer and said, It is in the Writings, Bread is not man's only need, but every word which comes out of the mouth of God. | But he answering said, `It hath been written, Not upon bread alone doth man live, but upon every word coming forth from the mouth of God.` | "It is written," replied Jesus, "`It is not on bread alone that a man shall live, but on whatsoever God shall appoint.'" |
Matthew 4:5 | Then the Evil One took him to the holy town; and he put him on the highest point of the Temple and said to him, | Then doth the Devil take him to the [holy] city, and doth set him on the pinnacle of the temple, | Then the Devil took Him to the Holy City and caused Him to stand on the roof of the Temple, |
Matthew 4:6 | If you are the Son of God, let yourself go down; for it is in the Writings, He will give his angels care over you; and, In their hands they will keep you up, so that your foot may not be crushed against a stone. | and saith to him, `If Son thou art of God cast thyself down, for it hath been written, that, His messengers He shall charge concerning thee, and on hands they shall bear thee up, that thou mayest not dash on a stone thy foot.` | and said, "If you are God's Son, throw yourself down; for it is written, "`To His angels He will give orders concerning thee, and on their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any moment thou shouldst strike thy foot against a stone.'" |

Matthew 4:15 | The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, by the way of the sea, the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, | `Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations! | "Zebulun's land and Naphtali's land; the road by the Lake; the country beyond the Jordan; Galilee of the Nations! |
Matthew 4:16 | The people who were in the dark saw a great light, and to those in the land of the shade of death did the dawn come up. | the people that is sitting in darkness saw a great light, and to those sitting in a region and shadow of death light arose to them.` | The people who were dwelling in darkness have seen a brilliant light; and on those who were dwelling in the region of the shadow of death, on them light has dawned." |

Matthew 4:24 | And news of him went out through all Syria; and they took to him all who were ill with different diseases and pains, those having evil spirits and those who were off their heads, and those who had no power of moving.
