Matthew 5:1And seeing great masses of people he went up into the mountain; and when he was seated his disciples came to him.And having seen the multitudes, he went up to the mount, and he having sat down, his disciples came to him,Seeing the multitude of people, Jesus went up the Hill. There He seated Himself, and when His disciples came to Him,
Matthew 5:2And with these words he gave them teaching, saying, and having opened his mouth, he was teaching them, saying:He proceeded to teach them, and said:
Matthew 5:3Happy are the poor in spirit: for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.`Happy the poor in spirit because theirs is the reign of the heavens."Blessed are the poor in spirit, for to them belongs the Kingdom of the Heavens.
Matthew 5:4Happy are those who are sad: for they will be comforted.`Happy the mourning because they shall be comforted."Blessed are the mourners, for they shall be comforted.
Matthew 5:5Happy are the gentle: for the earth will be their heritage.`Happy the meek because they shall inherit the land."Blessed are the meek, for they as heirs shall obtain possession of the earth.
Matthew 5:6Happy are those whose heart's desire is for righteousness: for they will have their desire.`Happy those hungering and thirsting for righteousness because they shall be filled."Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be completely satisfied.
Matthew 5:7Happy are those who have mercy: for they will be given mercy.`Happy the kind because they shall find kindness."Blessed are the compassionate, for they shall receive compassion.
Matthew 5:8Happy are the clean in heart: for they will see God.`Happy the clean in heart because they shall see God."Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Matthew 5:9Happy are the peacemakers: for they will be named sons of God.`Happy the peacemakers because they shall be called Sons of God."Blessed are the peacemakers, for it is they who will be recognized as sons of God.
Matthew 5:10Happy are those who are attacked on account of righteousness: for the kingdom of heaven will be theirs.`Happy those persecuted for righteousness` sake because theirs is the reign of the heavens."Blessed are those who have borne persecution in the cause of Righteousness, for to them belongs the Kingdom of the Heavens.
Matthew 5:11Happy are you when men give you a bad name, and are cruel to you, and say all evil things against you falsely, because of me.`Happy are ye whenever they may reproach you, and may persecute, and may say any evil thing against you falsely for my sake"Blessed are you when they have insulted and persecuted you, and have said every cruel thing about you falsely for my sake.
Matthew 5:12Be glad and full of joy; for great is your reward in heaven: for so were the prophets attacked who were before you.rejoice ye and be glad, because your reward [is] great in the heavens, for thus did they persecute the prophets who were before you.Be joyful and triumphant, because your reward is great in the Heavens; for so were the Prophets before you persecuted.
Matthew 5:13You are the salt of the earth; but if its taste goes from the salt, how will you make it salt again? it is then good for nothing but to be put out and crushed under foot by men.`Ye are the salt of the land, but if the salt may lose savour, in what shall it be salted? for nothing is it good henceforth, except to be cast without, and to be trodden down by men."*You* are the salt of the earth; but if salt has become tasteless, in what way can it regain its saltness? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown away and trodden on by the passers by.
Matthew 5:14You are the light of the world. A town put on a hill may be seen by all.`Ye are the light of the world, a city set upon a mount is not able to be hid;*You* are the light of the world; a town cannot be hid if built on a hill-top.
Matthew 5:15And a burning light is not put under a vessel, but on its table; so that its rays may be shining on all who are in the house.nor do they light a lamp, and put it under the measure, but on the lamp-stand, and it shineth to all those in the house;Nor is a lamp lighted to be put under a bushel, but on the lampstand; and then it gives light to all in the house.
Matthew 5:16Even so let your light be shining before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.so let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and may glorify your Father who [is] in the heavens.Just so let your light shine before all men, in order that they may see your holy lives and may give glory to your Father who is in Heaven.
Matthew 5:17Let there be no thought that I have come to put an end to the law or the prophets. I have not come for destruction, but to make complete.`Do not suppose that I came to throw down the law or the prophets I did not come to throw down, but to fulfill;"Do not for a moment suppose that I have come to abrogate the Law or the Prophets: I have not come to abrogate them but to give them their completion.
Matthew 5:18Truly I say to you, Till heaven and earth come to an end, not the smallest letter or part of a letter will in any way be taken from the law, till all things are done.for, verily I say to you, till that the heaven and the earth may pass away, one iota or one tittle may not pass away from the law, till that all may come to pass.Solemnly I tell you that until Heaven and earth pass away, not one iota or smallest detail will pass away from the Law until all has taken place.
Matthew 5:19Whoever then goes against the smallest of these laws, teaching men to do the same, will be named least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who keeps the laws, teaching others to keep them, will be named great in the kingdom of heaven.`Whoever therefore may loose one of these commands the least and may teach men so, least he shall be called in the reign of the heavens, but whoever may do and may teach [them], he shall be called great in the reign of the heavens.Whoever therefore breaks one of these least commandments and teaches others to break them, will be called the least in the Kingdom of the Heavens; but whoever practises them and teaches them, he will be acknowledged as great in the Kingdom of the Heavens.
Matthew 5:20For I say to you, If your righteousness is not greater than the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never go into the kingdom of heaven.`For I say to you, that if your righteousness may not abound above that of the scribes and Pharisees, ye may not enter to the reign of the heavens. For I assure you that unless your righteousness greatly surpasses that of the Scribes and the Pharisees, you will certainly not find entrance into the Kingdom of the Heavens.
Matthew 5:21You have knowledge that it was said in old times, You may not put to death; and, Whoever puts to death will be in danger of being judged:`Ye heard that it was said to the ancients: Thou shalt not kill, and whoever may kill shall be in danger of the judgment;"You have heard that it was said to the ancients, `Thou shalt not commit murder', and whoever commits murder will be answerable to the magistrate.
Matthew 5:22But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be in danger of being judged; and he who says to his brother, Raca, will be in danger from the Sanhedrin; and whoever says, You foolish one, will be in danger of the hell of fire.but I I say to you, that every one who is angry at his brother without cause, shall be in danger of the judgment, and whoever may say to his brother, Empty fellow! shall be in danger of the sanhedrim, and whoever may say, Rebel! shall be in danger of the gehenna of the fire. But I say to you that every one who becomes angry with his brother shall be answerable to the magistrate; that whoever says to his brother `Raca,' shall be answerable to the Sanhedrin; and that whoever says, `You fool!' shall be liable to the Gehenna of Fire.
Matthew 5:23If then you are making an offering at the altar and there it comes to your mind that your brother has something against you,`If, therefore, thou mayest bring thy gift to the altar, and there mayest remember that thy brother hath anything against thee,If therefore when you are offering your gift upon the altar, you remember that your brother has a grievance against you,
Matthew 5:24While your offering is still before the altar, first go and make peace with your brother, then come and make your offering.leave there thy gift before the altar, and go first be reconciled to thy brother, and then having come bring thy gift.leave your gift there before the altar, and go and make friends with your brother first, and then return and proceed to offer your gift.
Matthew 5:25Come to an agreement quickly with him who has a cause against you at law, while you are with him on the way, for fear that he may give you up to the judge and the judge may give you to the police and you may be put into prison.`Be agreeing with thy opponent quickly, while thou art in the way with him, that the opponent may not deliver thee to the judge, and the judge may deliver thee to the officer, and to prison thou mayest be cast,Come to terms without delay with your opponent while you are yet with him on the way to the court; for fear he should obtain judgement from the magistrate against you, and the magistrate should give you in custody to the officer and you be thrown into prison.
Matthew 5:26Truly I say to you, You will not come out from there till you have made payment of the very last farthing.verily I say to thee, thou mayest not come forth thence till that thou mayest pay the last farthing.I solemnly tell you that you will certainly not be released till you have paid the very last farthing.
Matthew 5:27You have knowledge that it was said, You may not have connection with another man's wife:`Ye heard that it was said to the ancients: Thou shalt not commit adultery;"You have heard that it was said, `Thou shalt not commit adultery.'
Matthew 5:28But I say to you that everyone whose eyes are turned on a woman with desire has had connection with her in his heart.but I I say to you, that every one who is looking on a woman to desire her, did already commit adultery with her in his heart. But I tell you that whoever looks at a woman and cherishes lustful thoughts has already in his heart become guilty with regard to her.
Matthew 5:29And if your right eye is a cause of trouble to you, take it out and put it away from you; because it is better to undergo the loss of one part, than for all your body to go into hell.`But, if thy right eye doth cause thee to stumble, pluck it out and cast from thee, for it is good to thee that one of thy members may perish, and not thy whole body be cast to gehenna. If therefore your eye, even the right eye, is a snare to you, tear it out and away with it; it is better for you that one member should be destroyed rather than that your whole body should be thrown into Gehenna.
Matthew 5:30And if your right hand is a cause of trouble to you, let it be cut off and put it away from you; because it is better to undergo the loss of one part, than for all your body to go into hell.`And, if thy right hand doth cause thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast from thee, for it is good to thee that one of thy members may perish, and not thy whole body be cast to gehenna. And if your right hand is a snare to you, cut it off and away with it; it is better for you that one member should be destroyed rather than that your whole body should go into Gehenna.
Matthew 5:31Again, it was said, Whoever puts away his wife has to give her a statement in writing for this purpose:`And it was said, That whoever may put away his wife, let him give to her a writing of divorce;"It was also said, `If any man puts away his wife, let him give her a written notice of divorce.'
Matthew 5:32But I say to you that everyone who puts away his wife for any other cause but the loss of her virtue, makes her false to her husband; and whoever takes her as his wife after she is put away, is no true husband to her.but I I say to you, that whoever may put away his wife, save for the matter of whoredom, doth make her to commit adultery; and whoever may marry her who hath been put away doth commit adultery. But I tell you that every man who puts away his wife except on the ground of unfaithfulness causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries her when so divorced commits adultery.
Matthew 5:33Again, you have knowledge that it was said in old times, Do not take false oaths, but give effect to your oaths to the Lord:`Again, ye heard that it was said to the ancients: Thou shalt not swear falsely, but thou shalt pay to the Lord thine oaths;"Again, you have heard that it was said to the ancients, `Thou shalt not swear falsely, but shalt perform thy vows to the Lord.'
Matthew 5:34But I say to you, Take no oaths at all: not by the heaven, because it is the seat of God;but I I say to you, not to swear at all; neither by the heaven, because it is the throne of God,But I tell you not to swear at all; neither by Heaven, for it is God's throne;
Matthew 5:35Or by the earth, because it is the resting-place for his foot; or by Jerusalem, because it is the town of the great King.nor by the earth, because it is His footstool, nor by Jerusalem, because it is a city of a great king, nor by the earth, for it is the footstool under His feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the City of the Great King.
Matthew 5:36You may not take an oath by your head, because you are not able to make one hair white or black.nor by thy head mayest thou swear, because thou art not able one hair to make white or black; And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.
Matthew 5:37But let your words be simply, Yes or No: and whatever is more than these is of the Evil One.but let your word be, Yes, Yes, No, No, and that which is more than these is of the evil. But let your language be, `Yes, yes,' or `No, no.' Anything in excess of this comes from the Evil one.
Matthew 5:38You have knowledge that it was said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:`Ye heard that it was said: Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth;"You have heard that it was said, `Eye for eye, tooth for tooth.'
Matthew 5:39But I say to you, Do not make use of force against an evil man; but to him who gives you a blow on the right side of your face let the left be turned.but I I say to you, not to resist the evil, but whoever shall slap thee on thy right cheek, turn to him also the other; But I tell you not to resist a wicked man, but if any one strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other to him as well.
Matthew 5:40And if any man goes to law with you and takes away your coat, do not keep back your robe from him.and whoever is willing to take thee to law, and thy coat to take suffer to him also the cloak. If any one wishes to go to law with you and to deprive you of your under garment, let him take your outer one also.
Matthew 5:41And whoever makes you go one mile, go with him two.`And whoever shall impress thee one mile, go with him two,And whoever shall compel you to convey his goods one mile, go with him two.
Matthew 5:42Give to him who comes with a request, and keep not your property from him who would for a time make use of it.to him who is asking of thee be giving, and him who is willing to borrow from thee thou mayest not turn away.To him who asks, give: from him who would borrow, turn not away.
Matthew 5:43You have knowledge that it was said, Have love for your neighbour, and hate for him who is against you:`Ye heard that it was said: Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and shalt hate thine enemy;"You have heard that it was said, `Thou shalt love thy neighbour and hate thine enemy.'
Matthew 5:44But I say to you, Have love for those who are against you, and make prayer for those who are cruel to you;but I I say to you, Love your enemies, bless those cursing you, do good to those hating you, and pray for those accusing you falsely, and persecuting you,But I command you all, love your enemies, and pray for your persecutors;
Matthew 5:45So that you may be the sons of your Father in heaven; for his sun gives light to the evil and to the good, and he sends rain on the upright man and on the sinner.that ye may be sons of your Father in the heavens, because His sun He doth cause to rise on evil and good, and He doth send rain on righteous and unrighteous.that so you may become true sons of your Father in Heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the wicked as well as the good, and sends rain upon those who do right and those who do wrong.
Matthew 5:46For if you have love for those who have love for you, what credit is it to you? do not the tax-farmers the same?`For, if ye may love those loving you, what reward have ye? do not also the tax-gatherers the same? For if you love only those who love you, what reward have you earned? Do not even the tax-gatherers do that?
Matthew 5:47And if you say, Good day, to your brothers only, what do you do more than others? do not even the Gentiles the same?and if ye may salute your brethren only, what do ye abundant? do not also the tax-gatherers so?And if you salute only your near relatives, what praise is due to you? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?
Matthew 5:48Be then complete in righteousness, even as your Father in heaven is complete.ye shall therefore be perfect, as your Father who [is] in the heavens is perfect. You however are to be complete in goodness, as your Heavenly Father is complete.
