Luke 20:1And it came about on one of those days, when he was teaching the people in the Temple and preaching the good news,And it came to pass, on one of those days, as he is teaching the people in the temple, and proclaiming good news, the chief priests and the scribes, with the elders, came upon [him],It happened on one of those days, as he was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, that the chief priests and scribes came to him with the elders.
Luke 20:2That the chief priests and the scribes and the rulers of the people came to him and said, Make clear to us by what authority you do these things and who gave you this authority.and spake unto him, saying, `Tell us by what authority thou dost these things? or who is he that gave to thee this authority?`They asked him, "Tell us: by what authority do you do these things? Or who is giving you this authority?"
Luke 20:3And in answer he said to them, I will put a question to you, and do you give me an answer:And he answering said unto them, `I will question you I also one thing, and tell me:He answered them, "I also will ask you one question. Tell me:
Luke 20:4The baptism of John, was it from heaven or of men?the baptism of John, from heaven was it, or from men?`the baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men?"
Luke 20:5And they said among themselves, If we say, From heaven; he will say, Why did you not have faith in him?And they reasoned with themselves, saying `If we may say, From heaven, he will say, Wherefore, then, did ye not believe him? They reasoned with themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say, 'Why didn't you believe him?'
Luke 20:6But if we say, Of men; we will be stoned by the people, for they are certain that John was a prophet.and if we may say, From men, all the people will stone us, for they are having been persuaded John to be a prophet.`But if we say, 'From men,' all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet."
Luke 20:7And they made answer that they had no idea where it came from. And they answered, that they knew not whence [it was],They answered that they didn't know where it was from.
Luke 20:8And Jesus said, And I will not make clear to you by what authority I do these things.and Jesus said to them, `Neither do I say to you by what authority I do these things.`Jesus said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things."
Luke 20:9And he gave the people this story: A man made a vine-garden and gave the use of it to some field-workers and went into another country for a long time. And he began to speak unto the people this simile: `A certain man planted a vineyard, and gave it out to husbandmen, and went abroad for a long time,He began to tell the people this parable. "A man planted a vineyard, and rented it out to some farmers, and went into another country for a long time.
Luke 20:10And at the right time he sent a servant to the workers to get part of the fruit from the vines; but the workmen gave him blows and sent him away with nothing.and at the season he sent unto the husbandmen a servant, that from the fruit of the vineyard they may give to him, but the husbandmen having beat him, did send [him] away empty. At the proper season, he sent a servant to the farmers to collect his share of the fruit of the vineyard. But the farmers beat him, and sent him away empty.
Luke 20:11And he sent another servant, and they gave blows to him in the same way, and put shame on him, and sent him away with nothing.`And he added to send another servant, and they that one also having beaten and dishonoured, did send away empty; He sent yet another servant, and they also beat him, and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.
Luke 20:12And he sent a third, and they gave him wounds and put him out.and he added to send a third, and this one also, having wounded, they did cast out.He sent yet a third, and they also wounded him, and threw him out.
Luke 20:13And the lord of the garden said, What am I to do? I will send my dearly loved son; they may give respect to him.`And the owner of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my son the beloved, perhaps having seen this one, they will do reverence; The lord of the vineyard said, 'What will I do? I will send my beloved son. It may be that seeing him, they will respect him.'
Luke 20:14But when the workmen saw him, they said to one another, This is he who will one day be the owner of the property: let us put him to death and the heritage will be ours.and having seen him, the husbandmen reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir; come, we may kill him, that the inheritance may become ours; But when the farmers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.'
Luke 20:15And driving him out of the garden they put him to death. Now what will the lord do to these workmen?and having cast him outside of the vineyard, they killed [him]; what, then, shall the owner of the vineyard do to them? They threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do to them?
Luke 20:16He will come and put them to destruction and give the garden to others. And when he said this, they said, May it not be so.He will come, and destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others.` And having heard, they said, `Let it not be!`He will come and destroy these farmers, and will give the vineyard to others." When they heard it, they said, "God forbid!"
Luke 20:17But he, looking on them, said, Is it not in the Writings, The stone which the builders put on one side, the same has become the chief stone of the building?and he, having looked upon them, said, `What, then, is this that hath been written: A stone that the builders rejected this became head of a corner? But he looked at them, and said, "Then what is this that is written, 'The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the chief cornerstone?'
Luke 20:18Everyone falling on that stone will be broken, but the man on whom the stone comes down will be crushed to dust.every one who hath fallen on that stone shall be broken, and on whom it may fall, it will crush him to pieces.`"Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, but it will crush whoever it falls on to dust."
Luke 20:19And the chief priests and the scribes made attempts to get their hands on him in that very hour; and they were in fear of the people, for they saw that he had made up this story against them. And the chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him in that hour, and they feared the people, for they knew that against them he spake this simile. The chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on Him that very hour, but they feared the people for they knew He had spoken this parable against them.
Luke 20:20And they kept watch on him, and sent out secret representatives, who were acting the part of good men, in order that they might get something from his words, on account of which they might give him up to the government and into the power of the ruler. And, having watched [him], they sent forth liers in wait, feigning themselves to be righteous, that they might take hold of his word, to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor,They watched him, and sent out spies, who pretended to be righteous, that they might trap him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor.
Luke 20:21And they put a question to him, saying, Master, we are certain that your teaching and your words are right, and that you have no respect for a man's position, but you are teaching the true way of God:and they questioned him, saying, `Teacher, we have known that thou dost say and teach rightly, and dost not accept a person, but in truth the way of God dost teach; They asked him, "Teacher, we know that you say and teach what is right, and aren't partial to anyone, but truly teach the way of God.
Luke 20:22Is it right for us to make payment of taxes to Caesar or not?Is it lawful to us to give tribute to Caesar or not?`Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?"
Luke 20:23But he saw through their trick and said to them,And he, having perceived their craftiness, said unto them, `Why me do ye tempt? But he perceived their slyness, and said to them, "Why do you test me?
Luke 20:24Let me see a penny. Whose image and name are on it? And they said, Caesar's.shew me a denary; of whom hath it an image and superscription?` and they answering said, `Of Caesar:`Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?" They answered, "Caesar's."
Luke 20:25And he said, Then give to Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and to God the things which are God's.and he said to them, `Give back, therefore, the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God;`He said to them, "Then give to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."
Luke 20:26And they were not able to get anything from these words before the people: but they were full of wonder at his answer, and said nothing.and they were not able to take hold on his saying before the people, and having wondered at his answer, they were silent. They weren't able to trap him in his words before the people. They marveled at his answer, and were silent.
Luke 20:27And some of the Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no coming back from the dead; and they said to him,And certain of the Sadducees, who are denying that there is a rising again, having come near, questioned him,Some of the Sadducees came to him, those who deny that there is a resurrection.
Luke 20:28Master, Moses said that if a man's brother comes to his end, having a wife, but no children, his brother is to take the wife, and get a family for his brother.saying, `Teacher, Moses wrote to us, If any one`s brother may die, having a wife, and he may die childless that his brother may take the wife, and may raise up seed to his brother. They asked him, "Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man's brother dies having a wife, and he is childless, his brother should take the wife, and raise up children for his brother.
Luke 20:29Now there were seven brothers, and the first had a wife and came to his end, having no children;`There were, then, seven brothers, and the first having taken a wife, died childless,There were therefore seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died childless.
Luke 20:30And the second;and the second took the wife, and he died childless,The second took her as wife, and he died childless.
Luke 20:31And the third took her; and in the same way, all the seven, without having any children, came to their end.and the third took her, and in like manner also the seven they left not children, and they died; The third took her, and likewise the seven all left no children, and died.
Luke 20:32And last of all, the woman came to her end.and last of all died also the woman:Afterward the woman also died.
Luke 20:33When they come back from the dead, whose wife will she be? for all the seven had her.in the rising again, then, of which of them doth she become wife? for the seven had her as wife.`Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them will she be? For the seven had her as a wife."
Luke 20:34And Jesus said to them, The sons of this world are married and have wives; And Jesus answering said to them, `The sons of this age do marry and are given in marriage,Jesus said to them, "The sons of this age marry, and are given in marriage.
Luke 20:35But those to whom is given the reward of the world to come, and to come back from the dead, have no wives, and are not married;but those accounted worthy to obtain that age, and the rising again that is out of the dead, neither marry, nor are they given in marriage; But those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage.
Luke 20:36And death has no more power over them, for they are equal to the angels, and are sons of God, being of those who will come back from the dead.for neither are they able to die any more for they are like messengers and they are sons of God, being sons of the rising again. For neither can they die any more, for they are like the angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.
Luke 20:37But even Moses made it clear that the dead come back to life, saying, in the story of the burning thorn-tree, The Lord, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.`And that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the Bush, since he doth call the Lord, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed at the bush, when he called the Lord 'The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.'
Luke 20:38Now he is not the God of the dead but of the living: for all men are living to him.and He is not a God of dead men, but of living, for all live to Him.`Now he is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for all are alive to him."

Luke 20:42For David himself says in the book of Psalms, The Lord said to my Lord, Take your seat at my right hand, and David himself saith in the Book of Psalms, The Lord said to my lord, Sit thou on my right hand,David himself says in the book of Psalms, 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand,
Luke 20:43Till I put under your feet all those who are against you.till I shall make thine enemies thy footstool;Until I make your enemies the footstool of your feet."'
Luke 20:44David then gives him the name of Lord, so how is it possible for him to be his son?David, then, doth call him lord, and how is he his son?`"David therefore calls him Lord, so how is he his son?"
Luke 20:45And in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples,And, all the people hearing, he said to his disciples,In the hearing of all the people, he said to his disciples,
