| Acts 23:1 | And Paul, fixing his eyes on the council, said, Brethren, I have walked in all good conscience with God unto this day. | And Paul, looking stedfastly on the council, said, Brethren, I have lived before God in all good conscience until this day. | Then Paul, fixing a steady gaze on the Sanhedrin, said, "Brethren, it is with a perfectly clear conscience that I have discharged my duties before God up to this day." |
| Acts 23:2 | But the high priest Ananias ordered those standing by him to smite his mouth. | And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth. | On hearing this the High Priest Ananias ordered those who were standing near Paul to strike him on the mouth. |
| Acts 23:3 | Then Paul said to him, God will smite thee, whited wall. And *thou*, dost thou sit judging me according to the law, and breaking the law commandest me to be smitten? | Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whited wall: and sittest thou to judge me according to the law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law? | "Before long," exclaimed Paul, "God will strike you, you white-washed wall! Are you sitting there to judge me in accordance with the Law, and do you yourself actually break the Law by ordering me to be struck?" |
| Acts 23:4 | And those that stood by said, Dost thou rail against the high priest of God? | And they that stood by said, Revilest thou God's high priest? | "Do you rail at God's High Priest?" cried the men who stood by him. |
| Acts 23:5 | And Paul said, I was not conscious, brethren, that he was high priest; for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evilly of the ruler of thy people. | And Paul said, I knew not, brethren, that he was high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of a ruler of thy people. | "I did not know, brethren," replied Paul, "that he was the High Priest; for it is written, `Thou shalt not speak evil of a ruler of Thy people.'" |
| Acts 23:6 | But Paul, knowing that the one part [of them] were of the Sadducees and the other of the Pharisees, cried out in the council, Brethren, *I* am a Pharisee, son of Pharisees: *I* am judged concerning the hope and resurrection of [the] dead. | But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Brethren, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees: touching the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question. | Noticing, however, that the Sanhedrin consisted partly of Sadducees and partly of Pharisees, he called out loudly among them, "Brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of Pharisees. It is because of my hope of a resurrection of the dead that I am on my trial." |

| Acts 23:9 | And there was a great clamour, and the scribes of the Pharisees' part rising up contended, saying, We find nothing evil in this man; and if a spirit has spoken to him, or an angel ... | And there arose a great clamor: and some of the scribes of the Pharisees part stood up, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: and what if a spirit hath spoken to him, or an angel? | So there arose a great uproar; and some of the Scribes belonging to the sect of the Pharisees sprang to their feet and fiercely contended, saying, "We find no harm in the man. What if a spirit has spoken to him, or an angel !" |
| Acts 23:10 | And a great tumult having arisen, the chiliarch, fearing lest Paul should have been torn in pieces by them, commanded the troop to come down and take him by force from the midst of them, and to bring [him] into the fortress. | And when there arose a great dissension, the chief captain, fearing lest Paul should be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them, and bring him into the castle. | But when the struggle was becoming violent, the Tribune, fearing that Paul would be torn to pieces by the people, ordered the troops to go down and take him from among them by force and bring him into the barracks. |
| Acts 23:11 | But the following night the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good courage; for as thou hast testified the things concerning me at Jerusalem, so thou must bear witness at Rome also. | And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer: for as thou hast testified concerning me at Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome. | The following night the Lord came and stood at Paul's side, and said, "Be of good courage, for as you have borne faithful witness about me in Jerusalem, so you must also bear witness in Rome." |
| Acts 23:12 | And when it was day, the Jews, having banded together, put themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they should kill Paul. | And when it was day, the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul. | Now, when daylight came, the Jews formed a conspiracy and solemnly swore not to eat or drink till they had killed Paul. |
| Acts 23:13 | And they were more than forty who had joined together in this oath; | And they were more than forty that made this conspiracy. | There were more than forty of them who bound themselves by this oath. |
| Acts 23:14 | and they went to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have cursed ourselves with a curse to taste nothing until we kill Paul. | And they came to the chief priests and the elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great curse, to taste nothing until we have killed Paul. | They went to the High Priests and Elders and said to them, "We have bound ourselves under a heavy curse to take no food till we have killed Paul. |
| Acts 23:15 | Now therefore do ye with the council make a representation to the chiliarch so that he may bring him down to you, as about to determine more precisely what concerns him, and we, before he draws near, are ready to kill him. | Now therefore do ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you, as though ye would judge of his case more exactly: and we, before he comes near, are ready to slay him. | Now therefore you and the Sanhedrin should make representations to the Tribune for him to bring him down to you, under the impression that you intend to inquire more minutely about him; and we are prepared to assassinate him before he comes near the place." |
| Acts 23:16 | But Paul's sister's son, having heard of the lying in wait, came and entered into the fortress and reported [it] to Paul. | But Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait, and he came and entered into the castle and told Paul. | But Paul's sister's son heard of the intended attack upon him. So he came and went into the barracks and told Paul about it; |
| Acts 23:17 | And Paul, having called one of the centurions, said, Take this youth to the chiliarch, for he has something to report to him. | And Paul called unto him one of the centurions, and said, Bring this young man unto the chief captain; for he hath something to tell him. | and Paul called one of the Captains and said, "Take this young man to the Tribune, for he has information to give him." |
| Acts 23:18 | He therefore, having taken him with [him], led him to the chiliarch, and says, The prisoner Paul called me to [him] and asked me to lead this youth to thee, who has something to say to thee. | So he took him, and brought him to the chief captain, and saith, Paul the prisoner called me unto him, and asked me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath something to say to thee. | So he took him and brought him to the Tribune, and said, "Paul, the prisoner, called me to him and begged me to bring this youth to you, because he has something to say to you." |
| Acts 23:19 | And the chiliarch having taken him by the hand, and having gone apart in private, inquired, What is it that thou hast to report to me? | And the chief captain took him by the hand, and going aside asked him privately, What is it that thou hast to tell me? | Then the Tribune, taking him by the arm, withdrew out of the hearing of others and asked him, "What have you to tell me?" |
| Acts 23:20 | And he said, The Jews have agreed together to make a request to thee, that thou mayest bring Paul down to-morrow into the council, as about to inquire something more precise concerning him. | And he said, The Jews have agreed to ask thee to bring down Paul tomorrow unto the council, as though thou wouldest inquire somewhat more exactly concerning him. | "The Jews," he replied, "have agreed to request you to bring Paul down to the Sanhedrin to-morrow for the purpose of making yourself more accurately acquainted with the case. |
| Acts 23:21 | Do not thou then be persuaded by them, for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, who have put themselves under a curse neither to eat nor drink till they kill him; and now they are ready waiting the promise from thee. | Do not thou therefore yield unto them: for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, who have bound themselves under a curse, neither to eat nor to drink till they have slain him: and now are they ready, looking for the promise from thee. | I beg you not to comply; for more than forty men among them are lying in wait for him, who have solemnly vowed that they will neither eat nor drink till they have assassinated him; and even now they are ready, in anticipation of receiving that promise of you." |
| Acts 23:22 | The chiliarch then dismissed the youth, commanding [him], Utter to no one that thou hast represented these things to me. | So the chief captain let the young man go, charging him, Tell no man that thou hast signified these things to me. | So the Tribune sent the youth home, cautioning him. "Do not let any one know that you have given me this information," he said. |
| Acts 23:23 | And having called to [him] certain two of the centurions, he said, Prepare two hundred soldiers that they may go as far as Caesarea, and seventy horsemen, and two hundred light-armed footmen, for the third hour of the night. | And he called unto him two of the centurions, and said, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go as far as Caesarea, and horsemen threescore and ten, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night: | Then, calling to him two of the Captains, he gave his orders. "Get ready two hundred men," he said, "to march to Caesarea, with seventy cavalry and two hundred light infantry, starting at nine o'clock to-night." |
| Acts 23:24 | And [he ordered them] to provide beasts, that they might set Paul on them and carry [him] safe through to Felix the governor, | and [he bade them] provide beasts, that they might set Paul thereon, and bring him safe unto Felix the governor. | He further told them to provide horses to mount Paul on, so as to bring him safely to Felix the Governor. |

| Acts 23:27 | This man, having been taken by the Jews, and being about to be killed by them, I came up with the military and took out [of their hands], having learned that he was a Roman. | This man was seized by the Jews, and was about to be slain of them, when I came upon them with the soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman. | This man Paul had been seized by the Jews, and they were on the point of killing him, when I came upon them with the troops and rescued him, for I had been informed that he was a Roman citizen. |
| Acts 23:28 | And desiring to know the charge on which they accused him, I brought him down to their council; | And desiring to know the cause wherefore they accused him, I brought him down unto their council: | And, wishing to know with certainty the offense of which they were accusing him, I brought him down into their Sanhedrin, |
| Acts 23:29 | whom I found to be accused of questions of their law, but to have no charge laid against him [making him] worthy of death or of bonds. | whom I found to be accused about questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds. | and I discovered that the charge had to do with questions of their Law, but that he was accused of nothing for which he deserves death or imprisonment. |
| Acts 23:30 | But having received information of a plot about to be put in execution against the man [by the Jews], I have immediately sent him to thee, commanding also his accusers to say before thee the things that are against him. [Farewell.] | And when it was shown to me that there would be a plot against the man, I sent him to thee forthwith, charging his accusers also to speak against him before thee. | But now that I have received information of an intended attack upon him, I immediately send him to you, directing his accusers also to state before you the case they have against him." |
| Acts 23:31 | The soldiers therefore, according to what was ordered them, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris, | So the soldiers, as it was commanded them, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris. | So, in obedience to their orders, the soldiers took Paul and brought him by night as far as Antipatris. |
| Acts 23:32 | and on the morrow, having left the horsemen to go with him, returned to the fortress. | But on the morrow they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the castle: | The next day the infantry returned to the barracks, leaving the cavalry to proceed with him; |

| Acts 23:35 | he said, I will hear thee fully when thine accusers also are arrived. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod's praetorium. | I will hear thee fully, said he, when thine accusers also are come: and he commanded him to be kept in Herod's palace. | he said, "I will hear all you have to say, when your accusers also have come." And he ordered him to be detained in custody in Herod's Palace. |
