James 3:1Be not many teachers, my brethren, knowing that we shall receive greater judgment.Be not many [of you] teachers, my brethren, knowing that we shall receive heavier judgment. Do not be eager, my brethren, for many among you to become teachers; for you know that we teachers shall undergo severer judgement.
James 3:2For we all often offend. If any one offend not in word, *he* [is] a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body too.For in many things we all stumble. If any stumbleth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also. For we often stumble and fall, all of us. If there is any one who never stumbles in speech, that man has reached maturity of character and is able to curb his whole nature.
James 3:3Behold, we put the bits in the mouths of the horses, that they may obey us, and we turn round their whole bodies. Now if we put the horses' bridles into their mouths that they may obey us, we turn about their whole body also. Remember that we put the horses' bit into their mouths to make them obey us, and so we turn their whole bodies round.
James 3:4Behold also the ships, which are so great, and driven by violent winds, are turned about by a very small rudder, wherever the pleasure of the helmsman will.Behold, the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by rough winds, are yet turned about by a very small rudder, whither the impulse of the steersman willeth. So too with ships, great as they are, and often driven along by strong gales, yet they can be steered with a very small rudder in whichever direction the caprice of the man at the helm chooses.
James 3:5Thus also the tongue is a little member, and boasts great things. See how little a fire, how large a wood it kindles! So the tongue also is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire! In the same way the tongue is an insignificant part of the body, but it is immensely boastful. Remember how a mere spark may set a vast forest in flames.
James 3:6and the tongue [is] fire, the world of unrighteousness; the tongue is set in our members, the defiler of the whole body, and which sets fire to the course of nature, and is set on fire of hell. And the tongue is a fire: the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell. And the tongue is a fire. That world of iniquity, the tongue, is placed within us spotting and soiling our whole nature, and setting the whole round of our lives on fire, being itself set on fire by Gehenna.
James 3:7For every species both of beasts and of birds, both of creeping things and of sea animals, is tamed and has been tamed by the human species; For every kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind. For brute nature under all its forms beasts and birds, reptiles and fishes can be subjected and kept in subjection by human nature.
James 3:8but the tongue can no one among men tame; [it is] an unsettled evil, full of death-bringing poison. But the tongue can no man tame; [it is] a restless evil, [it is] full of deadly poison. But the tongue no man or woman is able to tame. It is an ever-busy mischief, and is full of deadly poison.
James 3:9Therewith bless we the Lord and Father, and therewith curse we men made after [the] likeness of God.Therewith bless we the Lord and Father; and therewith curse we men, who are made after the likeness of God: With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in God's likeness.
James 3:10Out of the same mouth goes forth blessing and cursing. It is not right, my brethren, that these things should be thus.out of the same mouth cometh forth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. Out of the same mouth there proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, this ought not to be.
James 3:11Does the fountain, out of the same opening, pour forth sweet and bitter?Doth the fountain send forth from the same opening sweet [water] and bitter? In a fountain, are fresh water and bitter sent forth from the same opening?
James 3:12Can, my brethren, a fig produce olives, or a vine figs? Neither [can] salt [water] make sweet water. Can a fig tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a vine figs? Neither [can] salt water yield sweet. Can a fig-tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a vine yield figs? No; and neither can salt water yield sweet.
James 3:13Who [is] wise and understanding among you; let him shew out of a good conversation his works in meekness of wisdom;Who is wise and understanding among you? let him show by his good life his works in meekness of wisdom. Which of you is a wise and well-instructed man? Let him prove it by a right life with conduct guided by a wisely teachable spirit.
James 3:14but if ye have bitter emulation and strife in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. But if ye have bitter jealousy and faction in your heart, glory not and lie not against the truth. But if in your hearts you have bitter feelings of envy and rivalry, do not speak boastfully and falsely, in defiance of the truth.
James 3:15This is not the wisdom which comes down from above, but earthly, natural, devilish. This wisdom is not [a wisdom] that cometh down from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. That is not the wisdom which comes down from above: it belongs to earth, to the unspiritual nature, and to evil spirits.
James 3:16For where emulation and strife [are], there [is] disorder and every evil thing. For where jealousy and faction are, there is confusion and every vile deed. For where envy and rivalry are, there also are unrest and every vile deed.
James 3:17But the wisdom from above first is pure, then peaceful, gentle, yielding, full of mercy and good fruits, unquestioning, unfeigned. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without variance, without hypocrisy. The wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceful, courteous, not self-willed, full of compassion and kind actions, free from favouritism and from all insincerity.
James 3:18But [the] fruit of righteousness in peace is sown for them that make peace. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for them that make peace. And peace, for those who strive for peace, is the seed of which the harvest is righteousness.
