Judges 1:1And it came to pass after the death of Joshua that the children of Israel asked Jehovah, saying, Which of us shall go up against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?Now after the death of Joshua, the children of Israel made request to the Lord, saying, Who is to go up first to make war for us against the Canaanites?After the death of Josue the children of Israel consulted the Lord, saying: Who shall go up before us against the Chanaanite, and shall be the leader of the war?
Judges 1:2And Jehovah said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.And the Lord said, Judah is to go up: see, I have given the land into his hands.And the Lord said: Juda shall go up: behold I have delivered the land into his hands.
Judges 1:3And Judah said to Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, and let us fight against the Canaanites, and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot; and Simeon went with him.Then Judah said to Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my heritage, so that we may make war against the Canaanites; and I will then go with you into your heritage. So Simeon went with him.And Juda said to Simeon his brother: Come up with me into my lot, and fight against the Chanaanite, that I also may go along with thee into thy lot. And Simeon went with him.
Judges 1:4And Judah went up; and Jehovah delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand, and they smote them in Bezek, ten thousand men.And Judah went up; and the Lord gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hands; and they overcame ten thousand of them in Bezek.And Juda went up, and the Lord delivered the Chanaanite, and the Pherezite into their hands: and they slew of them in Bezec ten thousand men.
Judges 1:5And they found Adoni-Bezek in Bezek, and fought against him, and they smote the Canaanites and the Perizzites.And they came across Adoni-zedek, and made war on him; and they overcame the Canaanites and the Perizzites.And they found Adonibezec in Bezec, and fought against him, and they defeated the Chanaanite, and the Pherezite.
Judges 1:6And Adoni-Bezek fled, and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.But Adoni-zedek went in flight; and they went after him and overtook him, and had his thumbs and his great toes cut off.And Adonibezec fled: and they pursued after him and took him, and cut off his fingers and toes.
Judges 1:7And Adoni-Bezek said, Seventy kings, with their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gleaned under my table: as I have done, so God has requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.And Adoni-zedek said, Seventy kings, whose thumbs and great toes had been cut off, got broken meat under my table: as I have done, so has God done to me in full. And they took him to Jerusalem, and he came to his end there.And Adonibezec said: Seventy kings having their fingers and toes cut off, gathered up the leavings of the meat under my table: as I have done, so hath God requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.
Judges 1:8And the children of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.Then the children of Judah made an attack on Jerusalem, and took it, burning down the town after they had put its people to the sword without mercy.And the children of Juda besieging Jerusalem, took it, and put it to the sword, and set the whole city on fire.
Judges 1:9And afterwards the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the hill-country, and in the south, and in the lowland.After that the children of Judah went down to make war on the Canaanites living in the hill-country and in the south and in the lowlands.And afterwards they went down and fought against the Chanaanite, who dwelt in the mountains, and in the south, and in the plains.
Judges 1:10And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-Arba; and they slew Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai.And Caleb went against the Canaanites of Hebron: (now in earlier times Hebron was named Kiriath-arba:) and he put Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai to the sword.And Juda going forward against the Chanaanite, that dwelt in Hebron (the name whereof was in former times Cariath-Arbe) slew Sesai, and Ahiman, and Tholmai:
Judges 1:11And from there he went against the inhabitants of Debir; now the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher.And from there he went up against the people of Debir. (Now the name of Debir in earlier times was Kiriath-sepher.)And departing from thence he went to the inhabitants of Dabir, the ancient name of which was Cariath-Sepher, that is, the city of letters.
Judges 1:12And Caleb said, He that smites Kirjath-sepher and takes it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter as wife.And Caleb said, I will give Achsah, my daughter, as wife to the man who overcomes Kiriath-sepher and takes it.And Caleb said: He that shall take Cariath-Sepher, and lay it waste, to him will I give my daughter Axa to wife.
Judges 1:13And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; and he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife.And Othniel, the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; so he gave him his daughter Achsah for his wife.And Othoniel the son of Cenez, the younger brother of Caleb, having taken it, he gave him Axa his daughter to wife.
Judges 1:14And it came to pass as she came, that she urged him to ask of her father the field; and she sprang down from the ass. And Caleb said to her, What wouldest thou?Now when she came to him, he put into her mind the idea of requesting a field from her father: and she got down from her ass; and Caleb said to her, What is it?And as she was going on her way her husband admonished her to ask a field of her father. And as she sighed sitting on her ass, Caleb said to her: What aileth thee?
Judges 1:15And she said to him, Give me a blessing; for thou hast given me a southern land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.And she said to him, Give me a blessing; because you have put me in a dry south-land, now give me springs of water. So Caleb gave her the higher spring and the lower spring.But she answered: Give me a blessing, for thou hast given me a dry land: give me also a watery land. So Caleb gave her the upper and the nether watery ground.
Judges 1:16And the children of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, had gone up out of the city of palm-trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which is in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt with the people.Now Hobab the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, had come up out of the town of palm-trees, with the children of Judah, into the waste land of Arad; and he went and was living among the Amalekites;And the children of the Cinite, the kinsman of Moses, went up from the city of palms, with the children of Juda into the wilderness of his lot, which is at the south side of Arad, and they dwelt with him.
Judges 1:17And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it; and they called the name of the city Hormah.And Judah went with Simeon, his brother, and overcame the Canaanites living in Zephath, and put it under the curse; and he gave the town the name of Hormah.And Juda went with Simeon his brother, and they together defeated the Chanaanites that dwelt in Sephaath, and slew them. And the name of the city was called Horma, that is, Anathema.
Judges 1:18And Judah took Gazah and its border, and Ashkelon and its border, and Ekron and its border.Then Judah took Gaza and its limit, and Ashkelon and its limit, and Ekron and its limit.And Juda took Gaza with its confines, and Ascalon and Accaron with their confines.
Judges 1:19And Jehovah was with Judah; and he took possession of the hill-country, for he did not dispossess the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.And the Lord was with Judah; and he took the hill-country for his heritage; but he was unable to make the people of the valley go out, for they had war-carriages of iron.And the Lord was with Juda, and he possessed the hill country: but was not able to destroy the inhabitants of the valley, because they had many chariots armed with scythes.
Judges 1:20And they gave to Caleb Hebron, as Moses had said; and he dispossessed from thence the three sons of Anak.And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had said; and he took the land of the three sons of Anak, driving them out from there.And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had said, who destroyed out of it the three sons of Enac.
Judges 1:21And the children of Benjamin did not dispossess the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.And the children of Judah did not make the Jebusites who were living in Jerusalem go out; the Jebusites are still living with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem.But the sons of Benjamin did not destroy the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem: and the Jebusite hath dwelt with the sons of Benjamin in Jerusalem until this present day.
Judges 1:22And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel; and Jehovah was with them.And the family of Joseph went up against Beth-el, and the Lord was with them.The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, and the Lord was with them.
Judges 1:23And the house of Joseph sent to search out Bethel; now the name of the city before was Luz.So they sent men to make a search round Beth-el. (Now the name of the town in earlier times was Luz.)For when they were besieging the city, which before was called Luza,
Judges 1:24And the guards saw a man come forth out of the city, and said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, how [we] may enter into the city, and we will shew thee kindness.And the watchers saw a man coming out of the town, and said to him, If you will make clear to us the way into the town, we will be kind to you.They saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him: Shew us the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.
Judges 1:25And he shewed them how to enter into the city. And they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.So he made clear to them the way into the town, and they put it to the sword; but they let the man and all his family get away safe.And when he had shewn them, they smote the city with the edge of the sword: but that man and all his kindred they let go:
Judges 1:26And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called its name Luz, which is its name to this day.And he went into the land of the Hittites, building a town there and naming it Luz: which is its name to this day.Who being sent away, went into the land of Hethim, and built there a city, and called it Luza: which is so called until this day.
Judges 1:27And Manasseh did not dispossess Beth-shean and its dependent villages, nor Taanach and its dependent villages, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its dependent villages, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its dependent villages, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its dependent villages; and the Canaanites would dwell in that land.And Manasseh did not take away the land of the people of Beth-shean and its daughter-towns, or of Taanach and its daughter-towns, or of the people of Dor and its daughter-towns, or of the people of Ibleam and its daughter-towns, or of the people of Megiddo and its daughter-towns, driving them out; but the Canaanites would go on living in that land.Manasses also did not destroy Bethsan, and Thanac with their villages, nor the inhabitants of Dor, and Jeblaam, and Mageddo with their villages. And the Chanaanite began to dwell with them.
Judges 1:28And it came to pass when Israel became strong, that they made the Canaanites tributary; but they did not utterly dispossess them.And whenever Israel became strong, they put the Canaanites to forced work, without driving them out completely.But after Israel was grown strong he made them tributaries, and would not destroy them.
Judges 1:29And Ephraim did not dispossess the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt among them in Gezer.And Ephraim did not make the Canaanites who were living in Gezer go out; but the Canaanites went on living in Gezer among them.Ephraim also did not slay the Chanaanite that dwelt in Gazer, but dwelt with him.
Judges 1:30Zebulun did not dispossess the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.Zebulun did not make the people of Kitron or the people of Nahalol go out; but the Canaanites went on living among them and were put to forced work.Zabulon destroyed not the inhabitants of Cetron, and Naalol: but the Chanaanite dwelt among them, and became their tributaries.
Judges 1:31Asher did not dispossess the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor Ahlab, nor Achzib, nor Helbah, nor Aphik, nor Rehob;And Asher did not take the land of the people of Acco, or Zidon, or Ahlab, or Achzib, or Helbah, or Aphik, or Rehob, driving them out;Aser also destroyed not the inhabitants of Accho, and of Sidon, of Ahalab, and of Achazib, and of Helba, and of Aphec, and of Rohob:
Judges 1:32and the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not dispossess them.But the Asherites went on living among the Canaanites, the people of the land, without driving them out.And he dwelt in the midst of the Chanaanites the inhabitants of that land, and did not slay them.
Judges 1:33Naphtali did not dispossess the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; and he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, but the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became tributaries to them.Naphtali did not take the land of the people of Beth-shemesh or of Beth-anath, driving them out; but he was living among the Canaanites in the land; however, the people of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath were put to forced work.Nephtali also destroyed not the inhabitants of Bethsames, and of Bethanath: and he dwelt in the midst of the Chanaanites the inhabitants of the land, and the Bethsamites and Bethanites were tributaries to him.
Judges 1:34And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the hill-country, for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley.And the children of Dan were forced into the hill-country by the Amorites, who would not let them come down into the valley;And the Amorrhite straitened the children of Dan in the mountain, and gave them not place to go down to the plain:
Judges 1:35And the Amorites would dwell on mount Heres, in Ajalon and in Shaalbim; but the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, and they became tributaries.For the Amorites would go on living in Mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim; but the children of Joseph became stronger than they, and put them to forced work.And he dwelt in the mountain Hares, that is, of potsherds, in Aialon and Salebim. And the hand of the house of Joseph was heavy upon him, and he became tributary to him.
Judges 1:36And the border of the Amorites was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rock, and upwards.And the limit of the Edomites went from the slope of Akrabbim from Sela and up.And the border of the Amorrhite was from the ascent of the scorpion, the rock, and the higher places.
