John 6:1 | After these things Jesus went away beyond the sea of Galilee, [or] of Tiberias, | After these things Jesus went away to the other side of the sea of Galilee that is, the sea of Tiberias. | After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias. |
John 6:2 | and a great crowd followed him, because they saw the signs which he wrought upon the sick. | And a great number of people went after him because they saw the signs which he did on those who were ill. | And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he performed on them that were diseased. |
John 6:3 | And Jesus went up into the mountain, and there sat with his disciples: | Then Jesus went up the mountain and was seated there with his disciples. | And Jesus went upon a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. |
John 6:4 | but the passover, the feast of the Jews, was near. | Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near. | And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh. |
John 6:5 | Jesus then, lifting up his eyes and seeing that a great crowd is coming to him, says to Philip, Whence shall we buy loaves that these may eat? | Lifting up his eyes, Jesus saw a great number of people coming to where he was, and he said to Philip, Where may we get bread for all these people? | When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come to him, he saith to Philip, Whence shall we buy bread that these may eat? |
John 6:6 | But this he said trying him, for he knew what he was going to do. | This he said, testing him: for he had no doubt what he himself would do. | (And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.) |
John 6:7 | Philip answered him, Loaves for two hundred denarii are not sufficient for them, that each may have some little [portion]. | Philip made answer, Bread to the value of two hundred pence would not be enough even to give everyone a little. | Philip answered him, Two hundred penny-worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them make take a little: |
John 6:8 | One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, says to him, | One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to Jesus, | One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith to him, |
John 6:9 | There is a little boy here who has five barley loaves and two small fishes; but this, what is it for so many? | There is a boy here with five barley cakes and two fishes: but what is that among such a number? | There is a lad here, who hath five barley-loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? |
John 6:10 | [And] Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place: the men therefore sat down, in number about five thousand. | Jesus said, Let the people be seated. Now there was much grass in that place. And those seated on the grass were about five thousand. | And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. (Now there was much grass in the place.) So the men sat down in number about five thousand. |
John 6:11 | And Jesus took the loaves, and having given thanks, distributed [them] to those that were set down; and in like manner of the small fishes as much as they would. | Then Jesus took the cakes and having given praise to God, he gave them to the people who were seated, and the fishes in the same way, as much as they had need of. | And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes, as much as they would. |
John 6:12 | And when they had been filled, he says to his disciples, Gather together the fragments which are over and above, that nothing may be lost. | And when they had had enough, Jesus said to his disciples, Take up the broken bits which are over, so that nothing may be wasted. | When they were satisfied, he said to his disciples, Gather the fragments that remain, that nothing may be lost. |
John 6:13 | They gathered [them] therefore together, and filled twelve hand-baskets full of fragments of the five barley loaves, which were over and above to those that had eaten. | So they took them up: twelve baskets full of broken bits of the five cakes which were over after the people had had enough. | Therefore they gathered them, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley-loaves, which remained over and above to them that had eaten. |
John 6:14 | The men therefore, having seen the sign which Jesus had done, said, This is truly the prophet which is coming into the world. | And when the people saw the sign which he had done, they said, Truly, this is the prophet who is to come into the world. | Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus performed, said, This is truly that prophet that should come into the world. |
John 6:15 | Jesus therefore knowing that they were going to come and seize him, that they might make [him] king, departed again to the mountain himself alone. | Now when Jesus saw that the people were about to come and take him by force to make him a king, he went away again up the mountain by himself. | When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again to a mountain himself alone. |
John 6:16 | But when evening was come, his disciples went down to the sea, | When evening came the disciples went down to the sea; | And when evening had now come, his disciples went down to the sea, |
John 6:17 | and having gone on board ship, they went over the sea to Capernaum. And it had already become dark, and Jesus had not come to them, | And they took a boat and went across the sea in the direction of Capernaum. By then it was dark and still Jesus had not come to them. | And entered into a boat, and went over the sea towards Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus had not come to them. |
John 6:18 | and the sea was agitated by a strong wind blowing. | The sea was getting rough because of a strong wind which was blowing. | And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew. |
John 6:19 | Having rowed then about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they see Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the ship; and they were frightened. | After they had gone three or four miles they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near to the boat; and they had great fear. | So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh to the boat: and they were afraid. |
John 6:20 | But he says to them, It is I: be not afraid. | But he said to them, It is I, have no fear. | But he saith to them, It is I; be not afraid. |
John 6:21 | They were willing therefore to receive him into the ship; and immediately the ship was at the land to which they went. | Then they readily took him into the boat: and straight away the boat was at the land to which they were going. | Then they willingly received him into the boat: and immediately the boat was at the land whither they were going. |
John 6:22 | On the morrow the crowd which stood on the other side of the sea, having seen that there was no other little ship there except that into which his disciples had got, and that Jesus had not gone with his disciples into the ship, but [that] his disciples had gone away alone; | The day after, the people who were on the other side of the sea saw that only one small boat had been there, that Jesus had not gone in that boat with the disciples, but that the disciples had gone away by themselves. | The day following, when the people who stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, save that one into which his disciples had entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples had gone away alone; |
John 6:23 | (but other little ships out of Tiberias came near to the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks;) | Some other boats, however, came from Tiberias near to the place where they had taken the bread after the Lord had given praise. | (Yet there came other boats from Tiberias nigh to the place where they ate bread, after the Lord had given thanks:) |
John 6:24 | when therefore the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, *they* got into the ships, and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. | So when the people saw that Jesus was not there, or his disciples, they got into those boats and went over to Capernaum looking for Jesus. | When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took boats, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus. |
John 6:25 | And having found him the other side of the sea, they said to him, Rabbi, when art thou arrived here? | And when they came across him on the other side of the sea they said, Rabbi, when did you come here? | And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither? |
John 6:26 | Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say to you, Ye seek me not because ye have seen signs, but because ye have eaten of the loaves and been filled. | Jesus, answering them, said, Truly I say to you, You come after me, not because you saw signs, but because you were given the bread and had enough. | Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say to you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye ate of the loaves, and were satisfied. |
John 6:27 | Work not [for] the food which perishes, but [for] the food which abides unto life eternal, which the Son of man shall give to you; for him has the Father sealed, [even] God. | Let your work not be for the food which comes to an end, but for the food which goes on for eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you, for on him has God the Father put his mark. | Labor not for the food which perisheth, but for that food which endureth to everlasting life, which the Son of man will give to you: for him hath God the Father sealed. |
John 6:28 | They said therefore to him, What should we do that we may work the works of God? | Then they said to him, How may we do the works of God? | Then said they to him, What shall we do, that we may work the works of God? |
John 6:29 | Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom *he* has sent. | Jesus, answering, said to them, This is to do the work of God: to have faith in him whom God has sent. | Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. |
John 6:30 | They said therefore to him, What sign then doest thou that we may see and believe thee? what dost thou work? | So they said, What sign do you give us, so that we may see and have faith in you? What do you do? | They said therefore to him, What sign showest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work? |
John 6:31 | Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written, He gave them bread out of heaven to eat. | Our fathers had the manna in the waste land, as the Writings say, He gave them bread from heaven. | Our fathers ate manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat. |
John 6:32 | Jesus therefore said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, [It is] not Moses that has given you the bread out of heaven; but my Father gives you the true bread out of heaven. | Jesus then said to them, Truly I say to you, What Moses gave you was not the bread from heaven; it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. | Then Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. |
John 6:33 | For the bread of God is he who comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world. | The bread of God is the bread which comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world. | For the bread of God is he who cometh down from heaven, and giveth life to the world. |
John 6:34 | They said therefore to him, Lord, ever give to us this bread. | Ah, Lord, they said, give us that bread for ever! | Then said they to him, Lord, evermore give us this bread. |
John 6:35 | [And] Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life: he that comes to me shall never hunger, and he that believes on me shall never thirst at any time. | And this was the answer of Jesus: I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never be in need of food, and he who has faith in me will never be in need of drink. | And Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me, shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me, shall never thirst. |
John 6:36 | But I have said to you, that ye have also seen me and do not believe. | But it is as I said to you: you have seen me, and still you have no faith. | But I said to you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not. |
John 6:37 | All that the Father gives me shall come to me, and him that comes to me I will not at all cast out. | Whatever the Father gives to me will come to me; and I will not send away anyone who comes to me. | All that the Father giveth me, shall come to me; and him that cometh to me, I will in no wise reject. |
John 6:38 | For I am come down from heaven, not that I should do *my* will, but the will of him that has sent me. | For I have come down from heaven, not to do my pleasure, but the pleasure of him who sent me. | For I came down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him that sent me. |
John 6:39 | And this is the will of him that has sent me, that of all that he has given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up in the last day. | And this is the pleasure of him who sent me, that I am not to let out of my hands anything which he has given me, but I am to give it new life on the last day. | And this is the Father's will who hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me, I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. |
John 6:40 | For this is the will of my Father, that every one who sees the Son, and believes on him, should have life eternal; and I will raise him up at the last day. | This, I say, is my Father's pleasure, that everyone who sees the Son and has faith in him may have eternal life: and I will take him up on the last day. | And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one who seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day. |
John 6:41 | The Jews therefore murmured about him, because he said, I am the bread which has come down out of heaven. | Now the Jews said bitter things about Jesus because of his words, I am the bread which came down from heaven. | The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven. |
John 6:42 | And they said, Is not this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we have known? how then does *he* say, I am come down out of heaven? | And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we have seen? How is it then that he now says, I have come down from heaven? | And they said, Is not this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven? |
John 6:43 | Jesus therefore answered and said to them, Murmur not among yourselves. | Jesus made answer and said, Do not say things against me, one to another. | Jesus therefore answered and said to them, Murmur not among yourselves. |
John 6:44 | No one can come to me except the Father who has sent me draw him, and I will raise him up in the last day. | No man is able to come to me if the Father who sent me does not give him the desire to come: and I will take him up from the dead on the last day. | No man can come to me, except the Father who hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. |
John 6:45 | It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every one that has heard from the Father [himself], and has learned [of him], comes to me; | The writings of the prophets say, And they will all have teaching from God. Everyone whose ears have been open to the teaching of the Father comes to me. | It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught from God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned from the Father, cometh to me. |
John 6:46 | not that any one has seen the Father, except he who is of God, he has seen the Father. | Not that anyone has ever seen the Father; only he who is from God, he has seen the Father. | Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he who is from God, he hath seen the Father. |
John 6:47 | Verily, verily, I say to you, He that believes [on me] has life eternal. | Truly I say to you, He who has faith in me has eternal life. | Verily, verily, I say to you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. |
John 6:48 | I am the bread of life. | I am the bread of life. | I am that bread of life. |
John 6:49 | Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and died. | Your fathers took the manna in the waste land and they are dead. | Your fathers ate manna in the wilderness, and are dead. |
John 6:50 | This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. | The bread which comes from heaven is such bread that a man may take it for food and never see death. | This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat of it, and not die. |
John 6:51 | I am the living bread which has come down out of heaven: if any one shall have eaten of this bread he shall live for ever; but the bread withal which I shall give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. | I am the living bread which has come from heaven: if any man takes this bread for food he will have life for ever: and more than this, the bread which I will give is my flesh which I will give for the life of the world. | I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man shall eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. |
John 6:52 | The Jews therefore contended among themselves, saying, How can he give us this flesh to eat? | Then the Jews had an angry discussion among themselves, saying, How is it possible for this man to give us his flesh for food? | The Jews therefore contended among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? |
John 6:53 | Jesus therefore said to them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Unless ye shall have eaten the flesh of the Son of man, and drunk his blood, ye have no life in yourselves. | Then Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, If you do not take the flesh of the Son of man for food, and if you do not take his blood for drink, you have no life in you. | Then Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. |
John 6:54 | He that eats my flesh and drinks my blood has life eternal, and I will raise him up at the last day: | He who takes my flesh for food and my blood for drink has eternal life: and I will take him up from the dead at the last day. | Whoever eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. |
John 6:55 | for my flesh is truly food and my blood is truly drink. | My flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. | For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. |
John 6:56 | He that eats my flesh and drinks my blood dwells in me and I in him. | He who takes my flesh for food and my blood for drink is in me and I in him. | He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. |
John 6:57 | As the living Father has sent me and I live on account of the Father, *he* also who eats me shall live also on account of me. | As the living Father has sent me, and I have life because of the Father, even so he who takes me for his food will have life because of me. | As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. |
John 6:58 | This is the bread which has come down out of heaven. Not as the fathers ate and died: he that eats this bread shall live for ever. | This is the bread which has come down from heaven. It is not like the food which your fathers had: they took of the manna, and are dead; but he who takes this bread for food will have life for ever. | This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers ate manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever. |
John 6:59 | These things he said in [the] synagogue, teaching in Capernaum. | Jesus said these things in the Synagogue while he was teaching at Capernaum. | These things he said in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum. |
John 6:60 | Many therefore of his disciples having heard [it] said, This word is hard; who can hear it? | Then, hearing this, a number of his disciples said, This is a hard saying; who is able to take in such teaching? | Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is a hard saying; who can hear it? |
John 6:61 | But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples murmur concerning this, said to them, Does this offend you? | When Jesus became conscious that his disciples were protesting about what he said, he said to them, Does this give you trouble? | When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said to them, Doth this offend you? |
John 6:62 | If then ye see the Son of man ascending up where he was before? | What then will you say if you see the Son of man going up to where he was before? | What if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before? |
John 6:63 | It is the Spirit which quickens, the flesh profits nothing: the words which I have spoken unto you are spirit and are life. | The spirit is the life giver; the flesh is of no value: the words which I have said to you are spirit and they are life. | It is the spirit that reviveth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak to you, they are spirit, and they are life. |
John 6:64 | But there are some of you who do not believe. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would deliver him up. | But still some of you have no faith. For it was clear to Jesus from the first who they were who had no faith, and who it was who would be false to him. | But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who he was that would betray him. |
John 6:65 | And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no one can come to me unless it be given to him from the Father. | And he said, This is why I said to you, No man is able to come to me if he is not given the power to do so by the Father. | And he said, Therefore I said to you, that no man can come to me, except it were given to him by my Father. |
John 6:66 | From that [time] many of his disciples went away back and walked no more with him. | Because of what he said, a number of the disciples went back and would no longer go with him. | From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. |
John 6:67 | Jesus therefore said to the twelve, Will ye also go away? | So Jesus said to the twelve, Have you a desire to go away? | Then said Jesus to the twelve, Will ye also go away? |
John 6:68 | Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast words of life eternal; | Then Simon Peter gave this answer: Lord, to whom are we to go? you have the words of eternal life; | Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. |
John 6:69 | and we have believed and known that thou art the holy one of God. | And we have faith and are certain that you are the Holy One of God. | And we believe, and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God. |
John 6:70 | Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you the twelve? and of you one is a devil. | Then Jesus said, Did I not make a selection of you, the twelve, and one of you is a son of the Evil One? | Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? |
John 6:71 | Now he spoke of Judas [the son] of Simon, Iscariote, for he [it was who] should deliver him up, being one of the twelve. | He was talking of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. It was he who was to be false to Jesus one of the twelve. | He spoke of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for it was he that was to betray him, being one of the twelve. |
