John 6:1 | After these things Jesus went away beyond the sea of Galilee, [or] of Tiberias, | After these things Jesus went away to the other side of the sea of Galilee that is, the sea of Tiberias. | After this Jesus went away across the Lake of Galilee (that is, the Lake of Tiberias). |
John 6:2 | and a great crowd followed him, because they saw the signs which he wrought upon the sick. | And a great number of people went after him because they saw the signs which he did on those who were ill. | A vast multitude followed Him, because they witnessed the miracles on the sick which He was constantly performing. |
John 6:3 | And Jesus went up into the mountain, and there sat with his disciples: | Then Jesus went up the mountain and was seated there with his disciples. | Then Jesus went up the hill, and sat there with His disciples. |
John 6:4 | but the passover, the feast of the Jews, was near. | Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near. | The Jewish Festival, the Passover, was at hand. |
John 6:5 | Jesus then, lifting up his eyes and seeing that a great crowd is coming to him, says to Philip, Whence shall we buy loaves that these may eat? | Lifting up his eyes, Jesus saw a great number of people coming to where he was, and he said to Philip, Where may we get bread for all these people? | And when He looked round and saw an immense crowd coming towards Him, He said to Philip, "Where shall we buy bread for all these people to eat?" |
John 6:6 | But this he said trying him, for he knew what he was going to do. | This he said, testing him: for he had no doubt what he himself would do. | He said this to put Philip to the test, for He Himself knew what He was going to do. |
John 6:7 | Philip answered him, Loaves for two hundred denarii are not sufficient for them, that each may have some little [portion]. | Philip made answer, Bread to the value of two hundred pence would not be enough even to give everyone a little. | "Seven pounds' worth of bread," replied Philip, "is not enough for them all to get even a scanty meal." |
John 6:8 | One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, says to him, | One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to Jesus, | One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to Him, |
John 6:9 | There is a little boy here who has five barley loaves and two small fishes; but this, what is it for so many? | There is a boy here with five barley cakes and two fishes: but what is that among such a number? | "There is a boy here with five barley loaves and a couple of fish: but what is that among so many?" |
John 6:10 | [And] Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place: the men therefore sat down, in number about five thousand. | Jesus said, Let the people be seated. Now there was much grass in that place. And those seated on the grass were about five thousand. | "Make the people sit down," said Jesus. The ground was covered with thick grass; so they sat down, the adult men numbering about 5,000. |
John 6:11 | And Jesus took the loaves, and having given thanks, distributed [them] to those that were set down; and in like manner of the small fishes as much as they would. | Then Jesus took the cakes and having given praise to God, he gave them to the people who were seated, and the fishes in the same way, as much as they had need of. | Then Jesus took the loaves, and after giving thanks He distributed them to those who were resting on the ground; and also the fish in like manner as much as they desired. |
John 6:12 | And when they had been filled, he says to his disciples, Gather together the fragments which are over and above, that nothing may be lost. | And when they had had enough, Jesus said to his disciples, Take up the broken bits which are over, so that nothing may be wasted. | When all were fully satisfied, He said to His disciples, "Gather up the broken portions that remain over, so that nothing be lost." |
John 6:13 | They gathered [them] therefore together, and filled twelve hand-baskets full of fragments of the five barley loaves, which were over and above to those that had eaten. | So they took them up: twelve baskets full of broken bits of the five cakes which were over after the people had had enough. | Accordingly they gathered them up; and with the fragments of the five barley loaves the broken portions that remained over after they had done eating they filled twelve baskets. |
John 6:14 | The men therefore, having seen the sign which Jesus had done, said, This is truly the prophet which is coming into the world. | And when the people saw the sign which he had done, they said, Truly, this is the prophet who is to come into the world. | Thereupon the people, having seen the miracle He had performed, said, "This is indeed the Prophet who was to come into the world." |
John 6:15 | Jesus therefore knowing that they were going to come and seize him, that they might make [him] king, departed again to the mountain himself alone. | Now when Jesus saw that the people were about to come and take him by force to make him a king, he went away again up the mountain by himself. | Perceiving, however, that they were about to come and carry Him off by force to make Him a king, Jesus withdrew again up the hill alone by Himself. |
John 6:16 | But when evening was come, his disciples went down to the sea, | When evening came the disciples went down to the sea; | When evening came on, His disciples went down to the Lake. |
John 6:17 | and having gone on board ship, they went over the sea to Capernaum. And it had already become dark, and Jesus had not come to them, | And they took a boat and went across the sea in the direction of Capernaum. By then it was dark and still Jesus had not come to them. | There they got on board a boat, and pushed off to cross the Lake to Capernaum. By this time it had become dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. |
John 6:18 | and the sea was agitated by a strong wind blowing. | The sea was getting rough because of a strong wind which was blowing. | The Lake also was getting rough, because a strong wind was blowing. |
John 6:19 | Having rowed then about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they see Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the ship; and they were frightened. | After they had gone three or four miles they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near to the boat; and they had great fear. | When, however, they had rowed three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the water and coming near the boat. |
John 6:20 | But he says to them, It is I: be not afraid. | But he said to them, It is I, have no fear. | They were terrified; but He called to them. "It is I," He said, "do not be afraid." |
John 6:21 | They were willing therefore to receive him into the ship; and immediately the ship was at the land to which they went. | Then they readily took him into the boat: and straight away the boat was at the land to which they were going. | Then they were willing to take Him on board; and in a moment the boat reached the shore at the point to which they were going. |
John 6:22 | On the morrow the crowd which stood on the other side of the sea, having seen that there was no other little ship there except that into which his disciples had got, and that Jesus had not gone with his disciples into the ship, but [that] his disciples had gone away alone; | The day after, the people who were on the other side of the sea saw that only one small boat had been there, that Jesus had not gone in that boat with the disciples, but that the disciples had gone away by themselves. | Next morning the crowd who were still standing about on the other side of the Lake found that there had been but one small boat there, and they had seen that Jesus did not go on board with His disciples, but that His disciples went away without Him. |
John 6:23 | (but other little ships out of Tiberias came near to the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks;) | Some other boats, however, came from Tiberias near to the place where they had taken the bread after the Lord had given praise. | Yet a number of small boats came from Tiberias to the neighbourhood of the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. |
John 6:24 | when therefore the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, *they* got into the ships, and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. | So when the people saw that Jesus was not there, or his disciples, they got into those boats and went over to Capernaum looking for Jesus. | When however the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His disciples were there, they themselves also took boats and came to Capernaum to look for Jesus. |
John 6:25 | And having found him the other side of the sea, they said to him, Rabbi, when art thou arrived here? | And when they came across him on the other side of the sea they said, Rabbi, when did you come here? | So when they had crossed the Lake and had found Him, they asked Him, "Rabbi, when did you come here?" |
John 6:26 | Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say to you, Ye seek me not because ye have seen signs, but because ye have eaten of the loaves and been filled. | Jesus, answering them, said, Truly I say to you, You come after me, not because you saw signs, but because you were given the bread and had enough. | "In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that you are searching for me not because you have seen miracles, but because you ate the loaves and had a hearty meal. |
John 6:27 | Work not [for] the food which perishes, but [for] the food which abides unto life eternal, which the Son of man shall give to you; for him has the Father sealed, [even] God. | Let your work not be for the food which comes to an end, but for the food which goes on for eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you, for on him has God the Father put his mark. | Bestow your pains not on the food which perishes, but on the food that remains unto the Life of the Ages that food which will be the Son of Man's gift to you; for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal." |
John 6:28 | They said therefore to him, What should we do that we may work the works of God? | Then they said to him, How may we do the works of God? | "What are we to do," they asked, "in order to carry out the things that God requires?" |
John 6:29 | Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom *he* has sent. | Jesus, answering, said to them, This is to do the work of God: to have faith in him whom God has sent. | "This," replied Jesus, "is above all the thing that God requires that you should be believers in Him whom He has sent." |
John 6:30 | They said therefore to him, What sign then doest thou that we may see and believe thee? what dost thou work? | So they said, What sign do you give us, so that we may see and have faith in you? What do you do? | "What miracle then," they asked, "do you perform for us to see and become believers in you? What do you *do*? |
John 6:31 | Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written, He gave them bread out of heaven to eat. | Our fathers had the manna in the waste land, as the Writings say, He gave them bread from heaven. | Our forefathers ate the manna in the Desert, as it is written, `He gave them bread out of Heaven to eat'." |
John 6:32 | Jesus therefore said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, [It is] not Moses that has given you the bread out of heaven; but my Father gives you the true bread out of heaven. | Jesus then said to them, Truly I say to you, What Moses gave you was not the bread from heaven; it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. | "In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that Moses did not give you the bread out of Heaven, but my Father is giving you the bread the true bread out of Heaven. |
John 6:33 | For the bread of God is he who comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world. | The bread of God is the bread which comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world. | For God's bread is that which comes down out of Heaven and gives Life to the world." |
John 6:34 | They said therefore to him, Lord, ever give to us this bread. | Ah, Lord, they said, give us that bread for ever! | "Sir," they said, "always give us that bread." |
John 6:35 | [And] Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life: he that comes to me shall never hunger, and he that believes on me shall never thirst at any time. | And this was the answer of Jesus: I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never be in need of food, and he who has faith in me will never be in need of drink. | "I am the bread of Life," replied Jesus; "he who comes to me shall never hunger, and he who believes in me shall never, never thirst. |
John 6:36 | But I have said to you, that ye have also seen me and do not believe. | But it is as I said to you: you have seen me, and still you have no faith. | But it is as I have said to you: you have seen me and yet you do not believe. |
John 6:37 | All that the Father gives me shall come to me, and him that comes to me I will not at all cast out. | Whatever the Father gives to me will come to me; and I will not send away anyone who comes to me. | Every one whom the Father gives me will come to me, and him who comes to me I will never on any account drive away. |
John 6:38 | For I am come down from heaven, not that I should do *my* will, but the will of him that has sent me. | For I have come down from heaven, not to do my pleasure, but the pleasure of him who sent me. | For I have left Heaven and have come down to earth not to seek my own pleasure, but to do the will of Him who sent me. |
John 6:39 | And this is the will of him that has sent me, that of all that he has given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up in the last day. | And this is the pleasure of him who sent me, that I am not to let out of my hands anything which he has given me, but I am to give it new life on the last day. | And this is the will of Him who sent me, that of all that He has given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it to life on the last day. |
John 6:40 | For this is the will of my Father, that every one who sees the Son, and believes on him, should have life eternal; and I will raise him up at the last day. | This, I say, is my Father's pleasure, that everyone who sees the Son and has faith in him may have eternal life: and I will take him up on the last day. | For this is my Father's will, that every one who fixes his gaze on the Son of God and believes in Him should have the Life of the Ages, and I will raise him to life on the last day." |
John 6:41 | The Jews therefore murmured about him, because he said, I am the bread which has come down out of heaven. | Now the Jews said bitter things about Jesus because of his words, I am the bread which came down from heaven. | Now the Jews began to find fault about Him because of His claiming to be the bread which came down out of Heaven. |
John 6:42 | And they said, Is not this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we have known? how then does *he* say, I am come down out of heaven? | And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we have seen? How is it then that he now says, I have come down from heaven? | They kept asking, "Is not this man Joseph's son? Is he not Jesus, whose father and mother we know? What does he mean by now saying, `I have come down out of Heaven'?" |
John 6:43 | Jesus therefore answered and said to them, Murmur not among yourselves. | Jesus made answer and said, Do not say things against me, one to another. | "Do not thus find fault among yourselves," replied Jesus; |
John 6:44 | No one can come to me except the Father who has sent me draw him, and I will raise him up in the last day. | No man is able to come to me if the Father who sent me does not give him the desire to come: and I will take him up from the dead on the last day. | "no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him; then I will raise him to life on the last day. |
John 6:45 | It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every one that has heard from the Father [himself], and has learned [of him], comes to me; | The writings of the prophets say, And they will all have teaching from God. Everyone whose ears have been open to the teaching of the Father comes to me. | It stands written in the Prophets, `And they shall all of them be taught by God'. Every one who listens to the Father and learns from Him comes to me. |
John 6:46 | not that any one has seen the Father, except he who is of God, he has seen the Father. | Not that anyone has ever seen the Father; only he who is from God, he has seen the Father. | No one has ever seen the Father except Him who is from God. He has seen the Father. |
John 6:47 | Verily, verily, I say to you, He that believes [on me] has life eternal. | Truly I say to you, He who has faith in me has eternal life. | "In most solemn truth I tell you that he who believes has the Life of the Ages. |
John 6:48 | I am the bread of life. | I am the bread of life. | I am the bread of Life. |
John 6:49 | Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and died. | Your fathers took the manna in the waste land and they are dead. | Your forefathers ate the manna in the Desert, and they died. |
John 6:50 | This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. | The bread which comes from heaven is such bread that a man may take it for food and never see death. | Here is the bread that comes down out of Heaven that a man may eat it and not die. |
John 6:51 | I am the living bread which has come down out of heaven: if any one shall have eaten of this bread he shall live for ever; but the bread withal which I shall give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. | I am the living bread which has come from heaven: if any man takes this bread for food he will have life for ever: and more than this, the bread which I will give is my flesh which I will give for the life of the world. | I am the living bread come down out of Heaven. If a man eats this bread, he shall live for ever. Moreover the bread which I will give is my flesh given for the life of the world." |
John 6:52 | The Jews therefore contended among themselves, saying, How can he give us this flesh to eat? | Then the Jews had an angry discussion among themselves, saying, How is it possible for this man to give us his flesh for food? | This led to an angry debate among the Jews. "How can this man," they argued, "give us his flesh to eat?" |
John 6:53 | Jesus therefore said to them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Unless ye shall have eaten the flesh of the Son of man, and drunk his blood, ye have no life in yourselves. | Then Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, If you do not take the flesh of the Son of man for food, and if you do not take his blood for drink, you have no life in you. | "In most solemn truth I tell you," said Jesus, "that unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no Life in you. |
John 6:54 | He that eats my flesh and drinks my blood has life eternal, and I will raise him up at the last day: | He who takes my flesh for food and my blood for drink has eternal life: and I will take him up from the dead at the last day. | He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has the Life of the Ages, and I will raise him up on the last day. |
John 6:55 | for my flesh is truly food and my blood is truly drink. | My flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. | For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. |
John 6:56 | He that eats my flesh and drinks my blood dwells in me and I in him. | He who takes my flesh for food and my blood for drink is in me and I in him. | He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in union with me, and I remain in union with him. |
John 6:57 | As the living Father has sent me and I live on account of the Father, *he* also who eats me shall live also on account of me. | As the living Father has sent me, and I have life because of the Father, even so he who takes me for his food will have life because of me. | As the ever-living Father has sent me, and I live because of the Father, so also he who eats me will live because of me. |
John 6:58 | This is the bread which has come down out of heaven. Not as the fathers ate and died: he that eats this bread shall live for ever. | This is the bread which has come down from heaven. It is not like the food which your fathers had: they took of the manna, and are dead; but he who takes this bread for food will have life for ever. | This is the bread which came down out of Heaven; it is unlike that which your forefathers ate for they ate and yet died. He who eats this bread shall live for ever." |
John 6:59 | These things he said in [the] synagogue, teaching in Capernaum. | Jesus said these things in the Synagogue while he was teaching at Capernaum. | Jesus said all this in the synagogue while teaching at Capernaum. |
John 6:60 | Many therefore of his disciples having heard [it] said, This word is hard; who can hear it? | Then, hearing this, a number of his disciples said, This is a hard saying; who is able to take in such teaching? | Many therefore of His disciples, when they heard it, said, "This is hard to accept. Who can listen to such teaching?" |
John 6:61 | But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples murmur concerning this, said to them, Does this offend you? | When Jesus became conscious that his disciples were protesting about what he said, he said to them, Does this give you trouble? | But, knowing in Himself that His disciples were dissatisfied about it, Jesus asked them, |
John 6:62 | If then ye see the Son of man ascending up where he was before? | What then will you say if you see the Son of man going up to where he was before? | "Does this seem incredible to you? What then if you were to see the Son of Man ascending again where He was before? |
John 6:63 | It is the Spirit which quickens, the flesh profits nothing: the words which I have spoken unto you are spirit and are life. | The spirit is the life giver; the flesh is of no value: the words which I have said to you are spirit and they are life. | It is the spirit which gives Life. The flesh confers no benefit whatever. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and are Life. |
John 6:64 | But there are some of you who do not believe. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would deliver him up. | But still some of you have no faith. For it was clear to Jesus from the first who they were who had no faith, and who it was who would be false to him. | But there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were that did not believe, and who it was that would betray Him. |
John 6:65 | And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no one can come to me unless it be given to him from the Father. | And he said, This is why I said to you, No man is able to come to me if he is not given the power to do so by the Father. | So He added, "That is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it be granted him by the Father." |
John 6:66 | From that [time] many of his disciples went away back and walked no more with him. | Because of what he said, a number of the disciples went back and would no longer go with him. | Thereupon many of His disciples left Him and went away, and no longer associated with Him. |
John 6:67 | Jesus therefore said to the twelve, Will ye also go away? | So Jesus said to the twelve, Have you a desire to go away? | Jesus therefore appealed to the Twelve. "Will you go also?" He asked. |
John 6:68 | Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast words of life eternal; | Then Simon Peter gave this answer: Lord, to whom are we to go? you have the words of eternal life; | "Master," replied Simon Peter, "to whom shall we go? Your teachings tell us of the Life of the Ages. |
John 6:69 | and we have believed and known that thou art the holy one of God. | And we have faith and are certain that you are the Holy One of God. | And we have come to believe and know that *you* are indeed the Holy One of God." |
John 6:70 | Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you the twelve? and of you one is a devil. | Then Jesus said, Did I not make a selection of you, the twelve, and one of you is a son of the Evil One? | "Did not I choose you the Twelve?" said Jesus, "and even of you one is a devil." |
John 6:71 | Now he spoke of Judas [the son] of Simon, Iscariote, for he [it was who] should deliver him up, being one of the twelve. | He was talking of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. It was he who was to be false to Jesus one of the twelve. | He alluded to Judas, the son of Simon the Iscariot. For he it was who, though one of the Twelve, was afterwards to betray Him. |
