John 8:1But Jesus went to the mount of Olives. But Jesus went to the Mountain of Olives.but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
John 8:2And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him; and he sat down and taught them.And early in the morning he came again into the Temple and all the people came to him and he was seated teaching them.At break of day however He returned to the Temple, and there the people came to Him in crowds. He seated Himself;
John 8:3And the scribes and the Pharisees bring [to him] a woman taken in adultery, and having set her in the midst,Now the scribes and Pharisees came, with a woman who had been taken in the act of sinning against the married relation;and was teaching them when the Scribes and the Pharisees brought to Him a woman who had been found committing adultery. They made her stand in the centre of the court, and they put the case to Him.
John 8:4they say to him, Teacher, this woman has been taken in the very act, committing adultery. And putting her forward, they said to him, Master, this woman has been taken in the very act of sinning against the married relation."Rabbi," they said, "this woman has been found in the very act of committing adultery.
John 8:5Now in the law Moses has commanded us to stone such; thou therefore, what sayest thou? Now in the law Moses gave directions that such women were to be stoned; what do you say about it?Now, in the Law, Moses has ordered us to stone such women to death. But what do you say?"
John 8:6But this they said proving him, that they might have [something] to accuse him [of]. But Jesus, having stooped down, wrote with his finger on the ground. They said this, testing him, so that they might have something against him. But Jesus, with his head bent down, made letters on the floor with his finger. They asked this in order to put Him to the test, so that they might have some charge to bring against Him. But Jesus leant forward and began to write with His finger on the ground.
John 8:7But when they continued asking him, he lifted himself up and said to them, Let him that is without sin among you first cast the stone at her.But when they went on with their questions, he got up and said to them, Let him among you who is without sin be the first to send a stone at her. When however they persisted with their question, He raised His head and said to them, "Let the sinless man among you be the first to throw a stone at her."
John 8:8And again stooping down he wrote on the ground. And again, with bent head, he made letters on the floor. Then He leant forward again, and again began to write on the ground.
John 8:9But they, having heard [that], went out one by one beginning from the elder ones until the last; and Jesus was left alone and the woman standing there. And when his words came to their ears, they went out one by one, starting with the oldest even to the last, because they were conscious of what was in their hearts: and Jesus was there by himself with the woman before him. They listened to Him, and then, beginning with the eldest, took their departure, one by one, till all were gone. And Jesus was left behind alone and the woman in the centre of the court.
John 8:10And Jesus, lifting himself up and seeing no one but the woman, said to her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? Has no one condemned thee? Then Jesus got up, and seeing nobody but the woman, he said to her, Where are the men who said things against you? did no one give a decision against you? Then, raising His head, Jesus said to her, "Where are they? Has no one condemned you?"
John 8:11And she said, No one, sir. And Jesus said to her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. And she said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said, And I do not give a decision against you: go, and never do wrong again.]"No one, Sir," she replied. "And *I* do not condemn you either," said Jesus; "go, and from this time do not sin any more."]
John 8:12Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world; he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. Then again Jesus said to them, I am the light of the world; he who comes with me will not be walking in the dark but will have the light of life.Once more Jesus addressed them. "I am the Light of the world," He said; "the man who follows me shall certainly not walk in the dark, but shall have the light of Life."
John 8:13The Pharisees therefore said to him, Thou bearest witness concerning thyself; thy witness is not true.So the Pharisees said to him, The witness you give is about yourself: your witness is not true."You are giving testimony about yourself," said the Pharisees; "your testimony is not true."
John 8:14Jesus answered and said to them, Even if I bear witness concerning myself, my witness is true, because I know whence I came and whither I go: but ye know not whence I come and whither I go.Jesus said in answer, Even if I give witness about myself, my witness is true, because I have knowledge of where I came from and where I am going; but you have no knowledge of where I come from or of where I am going."Even if I am giving testimony about myself," replied Jesus, "my testimony is true; for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you know neither of these two things.
John 8:15Ye judge according to the flesh, I judge no one.You are judging from what you see; I am judging no man.You judge according to appearances: I am judging no one.
John 8:16And if also I judge, my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who has sent me.Even if I am judging, my decision is right, because I am not by myself with me is the Father who sent me.And even if I do judge, my judgement is just; for I am not alone, but the Father who sent me is with me.
John 8:17And in your law too it is written that the testimony of two men is true:Even in your law it is said that the witness of two men is true.In your own Law, too, it is written that the testimony of two men is true.
John 8:18I am [one] who bear witness concerning myself, and the Father who has sent me bears witness concerning me.I give witness about myself and the Father who sent me gives witness about me.I am one giving testimony about myself, and the Father who sent me gives testimony about me."
John 8:19They said to him therefore, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye know neither me nor my Father. If ye had known me, ye would have known also my Father. Then they said to him, Where is your Father? Jesus said in answer, You have no knowledge of me or of my Father: if you had knowledge of me you would have knowledge of my Father."Where is your Father?" they asked. "You know my Father as little as you know me." He replied; "if you knew me, you would know my Father also."
John 8:20These words spoke he in the treasury, teaching in the temple; and no one took him, for his hour was not yet come.Jesus said these words in the place where the offerings were stored, while he was teaching in the Temple: but no man took him because his time was still to come. These sayings He uttered in the Treasury, while teaching in the Temple; yet no one arrested Him, because His time had not yet come.
John 8:21He said therefore again to them, I go away, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sin; where I go ye cannot come. Then he said to them again, I am going away and you will be looking for me, but death will overtake you in your sins. It is not possible for you to come where I am going.Again He said to them, "I am going away. Then you will try to find me, but you will die in your sins. Where I am going, it is impossible for you to come."
John 8:22The Jews therefore said, Will he kill himself, that he says, Where I go ye cannot come?So the Jews said, Will he take his life? Is that why he says, Where I go it is not possible for you to come? The Jews began to ask one another, "Is he going to kill himself, do you think, that he says, `Where I am going, it is impossible for you to come'?"
John 8:23And he said to them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above. Ye are of this world; I am not of this world. And he said to them, You are of the earth; I am from heaven: you are of this world; I am not of this world."You," He continued, "are from below, I am from above: you are of this present world, I am not of this present world.
John 8:24I said therefore to you, that ye shall die in your sins; for unless ye shall believe that I am [he], ye shall die in your sins. For this reason I said to you that death will overtake you in your sins: for if you have not faith that I am he, death will come to you while you are in your sins. That is why I told you that you will die in your sins; for, unless you believe that I am He, that is what will happen."
John 8:25They said therefore to him, Who art thou? [And] Jesus said to them, Altogether that which I also say to you. Then they said to him, Who are you? Jesus said, What I said to you from the first."You who are you?" they asked. "How is it that I am speaking to you at all?" replied Jesus.
John 8:26I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but he that has sent me is true, and I, what I have heard from him, these things I say to the world.I have much to say about you and against you: but he who sent me is true and what he has said to me I say to the world."Many things I have to speak and to judge concerning you. But He who sent me is true, and the things which I have heard from Him are those which I have come into the world to speak."
John 8:27They knew not that he spoke to them of the Father. They did not see that his words were about the Father. They did not perceive that He was speaking to them of the Father.
John 8:28Jesus therefore said to them, When ye shall have lifted up the Son of man, then ye shall know that I am [he], and [that] I do nothing of myself, but as the Father has taught me I speak these things. So Jesus said, When the Son of man has been lifted up by you, then it will be clear to you who I am, and that I do nothing of myself, but say as the Father gave me teaching. So Jesus added, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He. Of myself I do nothing; but as the Father has taught me, so I speak.
John 8:29And he that has sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, because I do always the things that are pleasing to him.He who sent me is with me; he has not gone from me, because at all times I do the things which are pleasing to him.And He who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone: for I do always what is pleasing to Him."
John 8:30As he spoke these things many believed on him. When he said this a number came to have faith in him.As He thus spoke, many became believers in Him.
John 8:31Jesus therefore said to the Jews who believed him, If ye abide in my word, ye are truly my disciples;Then Jesus said to the Jews who had faith in him, If you keep my word, then you are truly my disciples;Jesus therefore said to those of the Jews who had now believed in Him, "As for you, if you hold fast to my teaching, then you are truly my disciples;
John 8:32and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free. And you will have knowledge of what is true, and that will make you free.and you shall know the Truth, and the Truth will make you free."
John 8:33They answered him, We are Abraham's seed, and have never been under bondage to any one; how sayest thou, Ye shall become free? They said to him in answer, We are Abraham's seed and have never been any man's servant: why do you say, You will become free?"We are descendants of Abraham," they answered, "and have never at any time been in slavery to any one. What do those words of yours mean, `You shall become free'?"
John 8:34Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say to you, Every one that practises sin is the bondman of sin.And this was the answer Jesus gave them: Truly I say to you, Everyone who does evil is the servant of sin."In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that every one who commits sin is the slave of sin.
John 8:35Now the bondman abides not in the house for ever: the son abides for ever. Now the servant does not go on living in the house for ever, but the son does. Now a slave does not remain permanently in his master's house, but a son does.
John 8:36If therefore the Son shall set you free, ye shall be really free.If then the son makes you free, you will be truly free.If then the Son shall make you free, you will be free indeed.
John 8:37I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word has no entrance in you.I am conscious that you are Abraham's seed; but you have a desire to put me to death because my word has no place in you.You are descendants of Abraham, I know; but you want to kill me, because my teaching gains no ground within you.
John 8:38I speak what I have seen with my Father, and ye then do what ye have seen with your father.I say the things which I have seen in my Father's house: and you do the things which come to you from your father's house. The words I speak are those I have learnt in the presence of the Father. Therefore you also should do what you have heard from your father."
John 8:39They answered and said to him, Abraham is our father. Jesus says to them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham; In answer they said to him, Our father is Abraham. Jesus said to them, If you were Abraham's children you would do what Abraham did."Our father is Abraham," they said. "If you were Abraham's children," replied Jesus, "it is Abraham's deeds that you would be doing.
John 8:40but now ye seek to kill me, a man who has spoken the truth to you, which I have heard from God: this did not Abraham. But now you have a desire to put me to death, a man who has said to you what is true, as I had it from God: Abraham did not do that. But, in fact, you are longing to kill me, a man who has spoken to you the truth which I have heard from God. Abraham did not do that.
John 8:41Ye do the works of your father. They said [therefore] to him, We are not born of fornication; we have one father, God.You are doing the works of your father. They said to him, We are true sons of Abraham; we have one Father, who is God.You are doing the deeds of your father." "We," they replied, "are not illegitimate children. We have one Father, namely God."
John 8:42Jesus said to them, If God were your father ye would have loved me, for I came forth from God and am come [from him]; for neither am I come of myself, but *he* has sent me.Jesus said to them, If God was your Father you would have love for me, because it was from God I came and am here. I did not come of myself, but he sent me."If God were your Father," said Jesus, "you would love me; for it is from God that I came and I am now here. I have not come of myself, but *He* sent me.
John 8:43Why do ye not know my speech? Because ye cannot hear my word. Why are my words not clear to you? It is because your ears are shut to my teaching. How is it you do not understand me when I speak? It is because you cannot bear to listen to my words.
John 8:44Ye are of the devil, as [your] father, and ye desire to do the lusts of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks falsehood, he speaks of what is his own; for he is a liar and its father:You are the children of your father the Evil One and it is your pleasure to do his desires. From the first he was a taker of life; and he did not go in the true way because there is no true thing in him. When he says what is false, it is natural to him, for he is false and the father of what is false. The father whose sons you are is the Devil; and you desire to do what gives him pleasure. *He* was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand firm in the truth for there is no truth in him. Whenever he utters his lie, he utters it out of his own store; for he is a liar, and the father of lies.
John 8:45and because I speak the truth, ye do not believe me.But because I say what is true, you have no belief in me.But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me.
John 8:46Which of you convinces me of sin? If I speak truth, why do ye not believe me?Which of you is able truly to say that I am a sinner? If I say what is true, why have you no belief in me?Which of *you* convicts me of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me?
John 8:47He that is of God hears the words of God: therefore ye hear [them] not, because ye are not of God.He who is a child of God gives ear to the words of God: your ears are not open to them because you are not from God.He who is a child of God listens to God's words. You do not listen to them: and why? It is because you are not God's children."
John 8:48The Jews answered and said to him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan and hast a demon? The Jews said to him in answer, Are we not right in saying that you are of Samaria and have an evil spirit?"Are we not right," answered the Jews, "in saying that you are a Samaritan and are possessed by a demon?"
John 8:49Jesus answered, I have not a demon; but I honour my Father, and ye dishonour me.And this was the answer of Jesus: I have not an evil spirit; but I give honour to my Father and you do not give honour to me."I am not possessed by a demon," replied Jesus. "On the contrary I honour my Father, and you dishonour me.
John 8:50But I do not seek my own glory: there is he that seeks and judges.I, however, am not in search of glory for myself: there is One who is searching for it and he is judge.I, however, am not aiming at glory for myself: there is One who aims at glory for me and who judges.
John 8:51Verily, verily, I say unto you, If any one shall keep my word, he shall never see death.Truly I say to you, If a man keeps my word he will never see death. In most solemn truth I tell you that if any one shall have obeyed my teaching he shall in no case ever see death."
John 8:52The Jews therefore said to him, Now we know that thou hast a demon. Abraham has died, and the prophets, and thou sayest, If any one keep my word, he shall never taste death. The Jews said to him, Now we are certain that you have an evil spirit. Abraham is dead, and the prophets are dead; and you say, If a man keeps my word he will never see death."Now," exclaimed the Jews, "we know that you are possessed by a demon. Abraham died, and so did the Prophets, and yet *you* say, `If any one shall have obeyed my teaching, he shall in no case ever taste death.'
John 8:53Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who has died? and the prophets have died: whom makest thou thyself? Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? and the prophets are dead: who do you say that you are?Are you really greater than our forefather Abraham? For he died. And the prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?"
John 8:54Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father who glorifies me, [of] whom ye say, He is our God.Jesus said in answer, If I take glory for myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father who gives me glory, of whom you say that he is your God."Were I to glorify myself," answered Jesus, "I should have no real glory. There is One who glorifies me namely my Father, who you say is your God.
John 8:55And ye know him not; but I know him; and if I said, I know him not, I should be like you, a liar. But I know him, and I keep his word. You have no knowledge of him, but I have knowledge of him; and if I said I have no knowledge of him I would be talking falsely like you: but I have full knowledge of him, and I keep his word. You do not know Him, but I know Him perfectly; and were I to deny my knowledge of Him, I should resemble you, and be a liar. On the contrary I do know Him, and I obey His commands.
John 8:56Your father Abraham exulted in that he should see my day, and he saw and rejoiced.Your father Abraham was full of joy at the hope of seeing my day: he saw it and was glad.Abraham your forefather exulted in the hope of seeing my day: and he saw it, and was glad."
John 8:57The Jews therefore said to him, Thou hast not yet fifty years, and hast thou seen Abraham? Then the Jews said to him, You are not fifty years old; have you seen Abraham?"You are not yet fifty years old," cried the Jews, "and have you seen Abraham?"
John 8:58Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, Before Abraham came into being, I am."In most solemn truth," answered Jesus, "I tell you that before Abraham came into existence, I am."
John 8:59They took up therefore stones that they might cast [them] at him; but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple, [going through the midst of them, and thus passed on.]So they took up stones to send at him: but Jesus got secretly out of their way and went out of the Temple.Thereupon they took up stones with which to stone Him, but He hid Himself and went away out of the Temple.
