John 11:1Now there was a certain [man] sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister. Now a certain man named Lazarus was ill; he was of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha.
John 11:2It was [the] Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.(The Mary whose brother Lazarus was ill, was the Mary who put perfumed oil on the Lord and made his feet dry with her hair.)It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother, Lazarus, was sick.
John 11:3The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.So the sisters sent to him, saying, Lord, your dear friend is ill.The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, "Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick."
John 11:4But when Jesus heard [it], he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified by it.When this came to his ears, Jesus said, The end of this disease is not death, but the glory of God, so that the Son of God may have glory because of it.But when Jesus heard it, he said, "This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God's Son may be glorified by it."
John 11:5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. Now Jesus had love in his heart for Martha and her sister and Lazarus. Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
John 11:6When therefore he heard, He is sick, he remained two days then in the place where he was.So when the news came to him that Lazarus was ill, he did not go from the place where he was for two days. When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed at that time two days in the place where he was.
John 11:7Then after this he says to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. Then after that time he said to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. Then after this he said to the disciples, "Let's go into Judea again."
John 11:8The disciples say to him, Rabbi, [even but] now the Jews sought to stone thee, and goest thou thither again? The disciples said to him, Master, the Jews were attempting only the other day to have you stoned, and are you going back there again? The disciples told him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and are you going there again?"
John 11:9Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any one walk in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world; Then Jesus said in answer, Are there not twelve hours in the day? A man may go about in the day without falling, because he sees the light of this world.Jesus answered, "Aren't there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn't stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
John 11:10but if any one walk in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.But if a man goes about in the night, he may have a fall because the light is not in him.But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn't in him."
John 11:11These things said he; and after this he says to them, Lazarus, our friend, is fallen asleep, but I go that I may awake him out of sleep. These things said he: and after that he said to them, Lazarus our friend is at rest; but I go so that I may make him come out of his sleep. He said these things, and after that, he said to them, "Our friend, Lazarus, has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep."
John 11:12The disciples therefore said to him, Lord, if he be fallen asleep, he will get well. Then his disciples said to him, Lord, if he is resting he will get well. The disciples therefore said to him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover."
John 11:13But Jesus spoke of his death, but *they* thought that he spoke of the rest of sleep.Jesus, however, was talking of his death: but they had the idea that he was talking about taking rest in sleep. Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.
John 11:14Jesus therefore then said to them plainly, Lazarus has died. Then Jesus said to them clearly, Lazarus is dead.So Jesus said to them plainly then, "Lazarus is dead.
John 11:15And I rejoice on your account that I was not there, in order that ye may believe. But let us go to him.And because of you I am glad I was not there, so that you may have faith; but let us go to him.I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let's go to him."
John 11:16Thomas therefore, called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, Let *us* also go, that we may die with him. Then Thomas, who was named Didymus, said to the other disciples, Let us go so that we may be with him in death.Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, "Let's go also, that we may die with him."
John 11:17Jesus therefore [on] arriving found him to have been four days already in the tomb. Now when Jesus came, he made the discovery that Lazarus had been put into the earth four days before. So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.
John 11:18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia off,Now Bethany was near to Jerusalem, about two miles away; Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away.
John 11:19and many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, that they might console them concerning their brother. And a number of Jews had come to Martha and Mary to give them comfort about their brother. Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.
John 11:20Martha then, when she heard Jesus is coming, went to meet him; but Mary sat in the house. When Martha had the news that Jesus was on the way, she went out to him, but Mary did not go from the house. Therefore Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house.
John 11:21Martha therefore said to Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died; Then Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead. Therefore Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn't have died.
John 11:22but even now I know, that whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee. But I am certain that, even now, whatever request you make to God, God will give it to you.Even now I know that, whatever you ask of God, God will give you."
John 11:23Jesus says to her, Thy brother shall rise again.Jesus said to her, Your brother will come to life again.Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."
John 11:24Martha says to him, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection in the last day.Martha said to him, I am certain that he will come to life again when all come back from the dead at the last day.Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day."
John 11:25Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that believes on me, though he have died, shall live;Jesus said to her, I am myself that day and that life; he who has faith in me will have life even if he is dead;Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he die, yet will he live.
John 11:26and every one who lives and believes on me shall never die. Believest thou this? And no one who is living and has faith in me will ever see death. Is this your faith?Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"
John 11:27She says to him, Yea, Lord; I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who should come into the world. She said to him, Yes, Lord: my faith is that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world. She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God's Son, he who comes into the world."
John 11:28And having said this, she went away and called her sister Mary secretly, saying, The teacher is come and calls thee. And having said this, she went away and said secretly to her sister Mary, The Master is here and has sent for you. When she had said this, she went away, and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, "The Teacher is here, and is calling you."
John 11:29She, when she heard [that], rises up quickly and comes to him.And Mary, hearing this, got up quickly and went to him. She, when she heard this, arose quickly, and went to him.
John 11:30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha came to meet him.Now Jesus had not at this time come into the town, but was still in the place where Martha had seen him.Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him.
John 11:31The Jews therefore who were with her in the house and consoling her, seeing Mary that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, She goes to the tomb, that she may weep there. Then the Jews who were with her in the house, comforting her, when they saw Mary get up quickly and go out, went after her in the belief that she was going to the place of the dead and would be weeping there. Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, "She is going to the tomb to weep there."
John 11:32Mary therefore, when she came where Jesus was, seeing him, fell at his feet, saying to him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she went down at his feet, saying, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead.Mary therefore, when she came to where Jesus was, and saw him, fell down at his feet, saying to him, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn't have died."
John 11:33Jesus therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, was deeply moved in spirit, and was troubled,And when Jesus saw her weeping, and saw the Jews weeping who came with her, his spirit was moved and he was troubled,When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,
John 11:34and said, Where have ye put him? They say to him, Lord, come and see.And said, Where have you put him? They said, Come and see, Lord.and said, "Where have you laid him?" They told him, "Lord, come and see."
John 11:35Jesus wept. And Jesus himself was weeping.Jesus wept.
John 11:36The Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him!So the Jews said, See how dear he was to him!The Jews therefore said, "See how much affection he had for him!"
John 11:37And some of them said, Could not this [man], who has opened the eyes of the blind [man], have caused that this [man] also should not have died? But some of them said, This man, who made open the eyes of the blind man, was he not able to keep his friend from death? Some of them said, "Couldn't this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also caused that this man wouldn't die?"
John 11:38Jesus therefore, again deeply moved in himself, comes to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.So Jesus, deeply troubled in heart, came to the place of the dead. It was a hole in the rock, and a stone was over the opening.Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.
John 11:39Jesus says, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead, says to him, Lord, he stinks already, for he is four days [there].Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said, Lord, by this time the body will be smelling, for he has been dead four days.Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, "Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days."
John 11:40Jesus says to her, Did I not say to thee, that if thou shouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?Jesus said to her, Did I not say to you that if you had faith you would see the glory of God?Jesus said to her, "Didn't I tell you that if you believed, you would see God's glory?"
John 11:41They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifted up his eyes on high and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me;So they took away the stone. And Jesus, looking up to heaven, said, Father, I give praise to you for hearing me.So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, "Father, I thank you that you listened to me.
John 11:42but I knew that thou always hearest me; but on account of the crowd who stand around I have said [it], that they may believe that thou hast sent me.I was certain that your ears are at all times open to me, but I said it because of these who are here, so that they may see that you sent me.I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude that stands around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me."
John 11:43And having said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. Then he said in a loud voice, Lazarus, come out! When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"
John 11:44And the dead came forth, bound feet and hands with graveclothes, and his face was bound round with a handkerchief. Jesus says to them, Loose him and let him go.And he who was dead came out, with linen bands folded tightly about his hands and feet, and a cloth about his face. Jesus said to them, Make him free and let him go.He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Free him, and let him go."
John 11:45Many therefore of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what he had done, believed on him; Then a number of the Jews who had come to Mary and had seen the things which Jesus did had belief in him. Therefore many of the Jews, who came to Mary and saw that which Jesus did, believed in him.
John 11:46but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. But some of them went to the Pharisees with the news of what Jesus had done. But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done.
John 11:47The chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What do we? for this man does many signs. Then the high priests and the Pharisees had a meeting and said, What are we doing? This man is doing a number of signs. The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, "What are we doing? For this man does many signs.
John 11:48If we let him thus alone, all will believe on him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation. If we let him go on in this way, everybody will have belief in him and the Romans will come and take away our place and our nation. If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation."
John 11:49But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, Ye know nothingBut one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, You have no knowledge of anything; But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all,
John 11:50nor consider that it is profitable for you that one man die for the people, and not that the whole nation perish. You do not see that it is in your interest for one man to be put to death for the people, so that all the nation may not come to destruction.nor do you take account that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish."
John 11:51But this he did not say of himself; but, being high priest that year, prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation; He did not say this of himself, but being the high priest that year he said, as a prophet, that Jesus would be put to death for the nation; Now he didn't say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,
John 11:52and not for the nation only, but that he should also gather together into one the children of God who were scattered abroad. And not for that nation only, but for the purpose of uniting in one body the children of God all over the world.and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.
John 11:53From that day therefore they took counsel that they might kill him.And from that day they took thought together how to put him to death. So from that day forth they took counsel that they might put him to death.
John 11:54Jesus therefore walked no longer openly among the Jews, but went away thence into the country near the desert, to a city called Ephraim, and there he sojourned with the disciples. So Jesus no longer went about publicly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near to the waste land, to a town named Ephraim, where he was for some time with the disciples.Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples.
John 11:55But the passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves. Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and numbers of people went up from the country to Jerusalem to make themselves clean before the Passover. Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the Passover, to purify themselves.
John 11:56They sought therefore Jesus, and said among themselves, standing in the temple, What do ye think? that he will not come to the feast? They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another while they were in the Temple, What is your opinion? Will he not come to the feast? Then they sought for Jesus and spoke one with another, as they stood in the temple, "What do you think? Isn't he coming to the feast?"
John 11:57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandment that if any one knew where he was, he should make it known, that they might take him.Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone had knowledge where he was, he was to give them word, so that they might take him.Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.
