John 9:1 | And as he passed on, he saw a man blind from birth. | And when he went on his way, he saw a man blind from birth. | As he passed by, he saw a man blind from his birth. |
John 9:2 | And his disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi, who sinned, this [man] or his parents, that he should be born blind? | And his disciples put a question to him, saying, Master, was it because of this man's sin, or the sin of his father and mother, that he has been blind from birth? | His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" |
John 9:3 | Jesus answered, Neither has this [man] sinned nor his parents, but that the works of God should be manifested in him. | Jesus said in answer, It was not because of his sin, or because of his father's or mother's; it was so that the works of God might be seen openly in him. | Jesus answered, "Neither did this man sin, nor his parents. But, that the works of God might be revealed in him, |
John 9:4 | I must work the works of him that has sent me while it is day. [The] night is coming, when no one can work. | While it is day we have to do the works of him who sent me: the night comes when no work may be done. | I must work the works of him who sent me, while it is day. The night is coming, when no one can work. |
John 9:5 | As long as I am in the world, I am [the] light of the world. | As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. | When I am in the world, I am the light of the world." |
John 9:6 | Having said these things, he spat on the ground and made mud of the spittle, and put the mud, as ointment, on his eyes. | Having said these words, he put earth, mixed with water from his mouth, on the man's eyes, | When he had said this, he spat on the ground, made mud with the saliva, anointed the blind man's eyes with the mud, |
John 9:7 | And he said to him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, which is interpreted, Sent. He went therefore and washed, and came seeing. | And said to him, Go and make yourself clean in the bath of Siloam (the sense of the name is, Sent). So he went away and, after washing, came back able to see. | and said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which means "Sent"). So he went away, washed, and came seeing. |
John 9:8 | The neighbours therefore, and those who used to see him before, that he was a beggar, said, Is not this he that was sitting and begging? | Then the neighbours and others who had seen him before in the street, with his hand out for money, said, Is not this the man who got money from people? | The neighbors therefore, and those who saw that he was blind, before, said, "Isn't this he who sat and begged?" |
John 9:9 | Some said, It is he; others said, No, but he is like him: *he* said, It is I. | Some said, It is he: others said, No, but he is like him. He said, I am he. | Others said, "It is he." Still others said, "He is like him." He said, "I am he." |
John 9:10 | They said therefore to him, How have thine eyes been opened? | So they said to him, How then were your eyes made open? | They said therefore to him, "How were your eyes opened?" |
John 9:11 | He answered [and said], A man called Jesus made mud and anointed mine eyes, and said to me, Go to Siloam and wash: and having gone and washed, I saw. | His answer was: The man who is named Jesus put earth mixed with water on my eyes, and said to me, Go and make yourself clean in Siloam: so I went away and, after washing, am now able to see. | He answered, "A man called Jesus made mud, anointed my eyes, and said to me, "Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash." So I went away and washed, and I received sight." |
John 9:12 | They said therefore to him, Where is he? He says, I do not know. | And they said to him, Where is he? His answer was: I have no knowledge. | Then they asked him, "Where is he?" He said, "I don't know." |
John 9:13 | They bring him who was before blind to the Pharisees. | They took him before the Pharisees this man who had been blind. | They brought him who before was blind to the Pharisees. |
John 9:14 | Now it was sabbath when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. | Now the day on which the earth was mixed by Jesus and the man's eyes were made open was the Sabbath. | It was a Sabbath when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. |
John 9:15 | The Pharisees therefore also again asked him how he received his sight. And he said to them, He put mud upon mine eyes, and I washed, and I see. | So the Pharisees put more questions to him about how his eyes had been made open. And he said to them, He put earth on my eyes, and I had a wash and am able to see. | Again therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he received his sight. He said to them, "He put mud on my eyes, I washed, and I see." |
John 9:16 | Some of the Pharisees therefore said, This man is not of God, for he does not keep the sabbath. Others said, How can a sinful man perform such signs? And there was a division among them. | Then some of the Pharisees said, That man has not come from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath. Others said, How is it possible for a sinner to do such signs? So there was a division among them. | Some therefore of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, because he doesn't keep the Sabbath." Others said, "How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?" There was division among them. |
John 9:17 | They say therefore again to the blind [man], What dost thou say of him, that he has opened thine eyes? And he said, He is a prophet. | Again they said to the blind man, What have you to say about him for opening your eyes? And he said, He is a prophet. | Therefore they asked the blind man again, "What do you say about him, in that he opened your eyes?" He said, "He is a prophet." |
John 9:18 | The Jews therefore did not believe concerning him that he was blind and had received sight, until they had called the parents of him that had received sight. | Now the Jews had no belief in the statement that he had been blind and was now able to see, till they sent for the father and mother of the man whose eyes had been made open, | The Jews therefore did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and had received his sight, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight, |
John 9:19 | And they asked them saying, This is your son, of whom ye say that he was born blind: how then does he now see? | And put the question to them, saying, Is this your son, of whom you say that he was blind at birth? how is it then that he is now able to see? | and asked them, "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?" |
John 9:20 | His parents answered [them] and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; | In answer his father and mother said, We are certain that this is our son and that he was blind at birth: | His parents answered them, "We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; |
John 9:21 | but how he now sees we do not know, or who has opened his eyes we do not know. *He* is of age: ask *him*; *he* will speak concerning himself. | But how it is he is now able to see, or who made his eyes open, we are not able to say: put the question to him; he is old enough to give an answer for himself. | but how he now sees, we don't know; or who opened his eyes, we don't know. He is of age. Ask him. He will speak for himself." |
John 9:22 | His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if any one confessed him [to be the] Christ, he should be excommunicated from the synagogue. | They said this because of their fear of the Jews: for the Jews had come to an agreement that if any man said that Jesus was the Christ he would be put out of the Synagogue. | His parents said these things because they feared the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if any man would confess him as Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue. |
John 9:23 | On this account his parents said, He is of age: ask *him*. | That was the reason why they said, He is old enough; put the question to him. | Therefore his parents said, "He is of age. Ask him." |
John 9:24 | They called therefore a second time the man who had been blind, and said to him, Give glory to God: we know that this man is sinful. | So they sent a second time for the man who had been blind and they said to him, Give glory to God: it is clear to us that this man is a sinner. | So they called the man who was blind a second time, and said to him, "Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner." |
John 9:25 | He answered therefore, If he is sinful I know not. One thing I know, that, being blind [before], now I see. | He said in answer, I have no knowledge if he is a sinner or not, but one thing I am certain about; I was blind, and now I see. | He therefore answered, "I don't know if he is a sinner. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see." |
John 9:26 | And they said to him again, What did he do to thee? how opened he thine eyes? | Then they said to him, What did he do to you? how did he give you the use of your eyes? | They said to him again, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?" |
John 9:27 | He answered them, I told you already and ye did not hear: why do ye desire to hear again? do ye also wish to become his disciples? | His answer was: I have said it before, but your ears were shut: why would you have me say it again? is it your desire to become his disciples? | He answered them, "I told you already, and you didn't listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?" |
John 9:28 | They railed at him, and said, Thou art his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. | And they were angry with him and said, You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. | They became abusive towards him and said, "You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. |
John 9:29 | We know that God spoke to Moses; but [as to] this [man], we know not whence he is. | We are certain that God gave his word to Moses: but as for this man, we have no knowledge where he comes from. | We know that God has spoken to Moses. But as for this man, we don't know where he comes from." |
John 9:30 | The man answered and said to them, Now in this is a wonderful thing, that *ye* do not know whence he is, and he has opened mine eyes. | The man said in answer, Why, here is a strange thing! You have no knowledge where he comes from though he gave me the use of my eyes. | The man answered them, "How amazing! You don't know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. |
John 9:31 | [But] we know that God does not hear sinners; but if any one be God-fearing and do his will, him he hears. | We have knowledge that God does not give ear to sinners, but if any man is a worshipper of God and does his pleasure, to him God's ears are open. | We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshipper of God, and does his will, he listens to him. |
John 9:32 | Since time was, it has not been heard that any one opened the eyes of one born blind. | In all the years nobody has ever before seen the eyes of a man blind from birth made open. | Since the world began it has never been heard of that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. |
John 9:33 | If this [man] were not of God he would be able to do nothing. | If this man did not come from God he would be unable to do anything. | If this man were not from God, he could do nothing." |
John 9:34 | They answered and said to him, Thou hast been wholly born in sins, and thou teachest us? And they cast him out. | Their answer was: You came to birth through sin; do you make yourself our teacher? And they put him out of the Synagogue. | They answered him, "You were altogether born in sins, and do you teach us?" They threw him out. |
John 9:35 | Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him, he said to him, Thou, dost thou believe on the Son of God? | It came to the ears of Jesus that they had put him out, and meeting him he said, Have you faith in the Son of man? | Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and finding him, he said, "Do you believe in the Son of God?" |
John 9:36 | He answered and said, And who is he, Lord, that I may believe on him? | He said in answer, And who is he, Lord? Say, so that I may have faith in him. | He answered, "Who is he, Lord, that I may believe in him?" |
John 9:37 | And Jesus said to him, Thou hast both seen him, and he that speaks with thee is he. | Jesus said to him, You have seen him; it is he who is talking to you. | Jesus said to him, "You have both seen him, and it is he who speaks with you." |
John 9:38 | And he said, I believe, Lord: and he did him homage. | And he said, Lord, I have faith. And he gave him worship. | He said, "Lord, I believe!" and he worshipped him. |
John 9:39 | And Jesus said, For judgment am I come into this world, that they which see not may see, and they which see may become blind. | And Jesus said, I came into this world to be a judge, so that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind. | Jesus said, "I came into this world for judgment, that those who don't see may see; and that those who see may become blind." |
John 9:40 | And [some] of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and they said to him, Are we blind also? | These words came to the ears of the Pharisees who were with him and they said to him, Are we, then, blind? | Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and said to him, "Are we also blind?" |
John 9:41 | Jesus said to them, If ye were blind ye would not have sin; but now ye say, We see, your sin remains. | Jesus said to them, If you were blind you would have no sin: but now that you say, We see; your sin is there still. | Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, 'We see.' Therefore your sin remains. |
