John 4:1When therefore the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus makes and baptises more disciples than JohnNow when it was clear to the Lord that word had come to the ears of the Pharisees that Jesus was making more disciples than John and was giving them baptismWhen therefore the Lord knew that the Pharisees heard that Jesus more disciples doth make and baptize than John,
John 4:2(however, Jesus himself did not baptise, but his disciples),(Though, in fact, it was his disciples who gave baptism, not Jesus himself),(though indeed Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples,)
John 4:3he left Judaea and went away again unto Galilee.He went out of Judaea into Galilee again.he left Judea and went away again to Galilee,
John 4:4And he must needs pass through Samaria.And it was necessary for him to go through Samaria.and it was behoving him to go through Samaria.
John 4:5He comes therefore to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near to the land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph.So he came to a town of Samaria which was named Sychar, near to the bit of land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph:He cometh, therefore, to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near to the place that Jacob gave to Joseph his son;
John 4:6Now a fountain of Jacob's was there; Jesus therefore, being wearied with the way he had come, sat just as he was at the fountain. It was about the sixth hour.Now Jacob's fountain was there. Jesus, being tired after his journey, was resting by the fountain. It was about the sixth hour.and there was there a well of Jacob. Jesus therefore having been weary from the journeying, was sitting thus on the well; it was as it were the sixth hour;
John 4:7A woman comes out of Samaria to draw water. Jesus says to her, Give me to drinkA woman of Samaria came to get water, and Jesus said to her, Give me some water.there cometh a woman out of Samaria to draw water. Jesus saith to her, `Give me to drink;`
John 4:8(for his disciples had gone away into the city that they might buy provisions).For his disciples had gone to the town to get food.for his disciples were gone away to the city, that they may buy victuals;
John 4:9The Samaritan woman therefore says to him, How dost thou, being a Jew, ask to drink of me who am a Samaritan woman? for Jews have no intercourse with Samaritans.The woman of Samaria said to him, Why do you, a Jew, make a request for water to me, a woman of Samaria? She said this because Jews have nothing to do with the people of Samaria.the Samaritan woman therefore saith to him, `How dost thou, being a Jew, ask drink from me, being a Samaritan woman?` for Jews have no dealing with Samaritans.
John 4:10Jesus answered and said to her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that says to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.In answer Jesus said, If you had knowledge of what God gives freely and who it is who says to you, Give me water, you would make your prayer to him, and he would give you living water.Jesus answered and said to her, `If thou hadst known the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked him, and he would have given thee living water.`
John 4:11The woman says to him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: whence then hast thou the living water?The woman said to him, Sir, you have no vessel and the fountain is deep; from where will you get the living water?The woman saith to him, `Sir, thou hast not even a vessel to draw with, and the well is deep; whence, then, hast thou the living water?
John 4:12Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?Are you greater than our father Jacob who gave us the fountain and took the water of it himself, with his children and his cattle?Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who did give us the well, and himself out of it did drink, and his sons, and his cattle?`
John 4:13Jesus answered and said to her, Every one who drinks of this water shall thirst again;Jesus said to her, Everyone who takes this water will be in need of it again:Jesus answered and said to her, `Every one who is drinking of this water shall thirst again;
John 4:14but whosoever drinks of the water which I shall give him shall never thirst for ever, but the water which I shall give him shall become in him a fountain of water, springing up into eternal life.But whoever takes the water I give him will never be in need of drink again; for the water I give him will become in him a fountain of eternal life.but whoever may drink of the water that I will give him, may not thirst to the age; and the water that I will give him shall become in him a well of water, springing up to life age-during.`
John 4:15The woman says to him, Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst nor come here to draw.The woman said to him, Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be in need again of drink and will not have to come all this way for it.The woman saith unto him, `Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come hither to draw.`
John 4:16Jesus says to her, Go, call thy husband, and come here.Jesus said to her, Go, get your husband and come back here with him.Jesus saith to her, `Go, call thy husband, and come hither;`
John 4:17The woman answered and said, I have not a husband. Jesus says to her, Thou hast well said, I have not a husband;In answer, the woman said, I have no husband. Jesus said to her, You have said rightly, I have no husband:the woman answered and said, `I have not a husband.` Jesus saith to her, `Well didst thou say A husband I have not;
John 4:18for thou hast had five husbands, and he whom now thou hast is not thy husband: this thou hast spoken truly.You have had five husbands, and the man you have now is not your husband: that was truly said.for five husbands thou hast had, and, now, he whom thou hast is not thy husband; this hast thou said truly.`
John 4:19The woman says to him, Sir, I see that thou art a prophet.The woman said to him, Sir, I see that you are a prophet.The woman saith to him, `Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet;
John 4:20Our fathers worshipped in this mountain, and ye say that in Jerusalem is the place where one must worship.Our fathers gave worship on this mountain, but you Jews say that the right place for worship is in Jerusalem.our fathers in this mountain did worship, and ye ye say that in Jerusalem is the place where it behoveth to worship.`
John 4:21Jesus says to her, Woman, believe me, [the] hour is coming when ye shall neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem worship the Father.Jesus said to her, Woman, take my word for this; the time is coming when you will not give worship to the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem.Jesus saith to her, `Woman, believe me, that there doth come an hour, when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall ye worship the Father;
John 4:22Ye worship ye know not what; we worship what we know, for salvation is of the Jews.You give worship, but without knowledge of what you are worshipping: we give worship to what we have knowledge of: for salvation comes from the Jews.ye worship what ye have not known; we worship what we have known, because the salvation is of the Jews;
John 4:23But [the] hour is coming and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth; for also the Father seeks such as his worshippers.But the time is coming, and is even now here, when the true worshippers will give worship to the Father in the true way of the spirit, for these are the worshippers desired by the Father.but, there cometh an hour, and it now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father also doth seek such to worship him;
John 4:24God [is] a spirit; and they who worship him must worship [him] in spirit and truth.God is Spirit: then let his worshippers give him worship in the true way of the spirit.God [is] a Spirit, and those worshipping Him, in spirit and truth it doth behove to worship.`
John 4:25The woman says to him, I know that Messias is coming, who is called Christ; when *he* comes he will tell us all things.The woman said to him, I am certain that the Messiah, who is named Christ, is coming; when he comes he will make all things clear to us.The woman saith to him, `I have known that Messiah doth come, who is called Christ, when that one may come, he will tell us all things;`
John 4:26Jesus says to her, I who speak to thee am [he].Jesus said to her, I, who am talking to you, am he.Jesus saith to her, `I am [he], who am speaking to thee.`
John 4:27And upon this came his disciples, and wondered that he spoke with a woman; yet no one said, What seekest thou? or, Why speakest thou with her?At that point the disciples came back, and they were surprised to see him talking to a woman; but not one of them said to him, What is your purpose? or, Why are you talking to her?And upon this came his disciples, and were wondering that with a woman he was speaking, no one, however, said, `What seekest thou?` or `Why speakest thou with her?`
John 4:28The woman then left her waterpot and went away into the city, and says to the men,Then the woman put down her water-pot and went into the town, and said to the people,The woman then left her water-jug, and went away to the city, and saith to the men,
John 4:29Come, see a man who told me all things I had ever done: is not he the Christ?Come and see a man who has been talking to me of everything I ever did! Is it possible that this is the Christ?`Come, see a man, who told me all things as many as I did; is this the Christ?`
John 4:30They went out of the city and came to him.So they went out of the town and came to him.They went forth therefore out of the city, and were coming unto him.
John 4:31But meanwhile the disciples asked him saying, Rabbi, eat.While this was taking place, the disciples were saying to Jesus, Master, take some food.And in the meanwhile his disciples were asking him, saying, `Rabbi, eat;`
John 4:32But he said to them, I have food to eat which ye do not know.But he said to them, I have food of which you have no knowledge.and he said to them, `I have food to eat that ye have not known.`
John 4:33The disciples therefore said to one another, Has any one brought him [anything] to eat?So the disciples said one to another, Did anyone give him food?The disciples then said one to another, `Did any one bring him anything to eat?`
John 4:34Jesus says to them, My food is that I should do the will of him that has sent me, and that I should finish his work.Jesus said, My food is to do the pleasure of him who sent me and to make his work complete.Jesus saith to them, `My food is, that I may do the will of Him who sent me, and may finish His work;
John 4:35Do not ye say, that there are yet four months and the harvest comes? Behold, I say to you, Lift up your eyes and behold the fields, for they are already white to harvest.You would say, Four months from now is the time of the grain-cutting. Take a look, I say to you, at the fields; they are even now white for cutting.do not say that it is yet four months, and the harvest cometh; lo, I say to you, Lift up your eyes, and see the fields, that they are white unto harvest already.
John 4:36He that reaps receives wages and gathers fruit unto life eternal, that both he that sows and he that reaps may rejoice together.He who does the cutting now has his reward; he is getting together fruit for eternal life, so that he who did the planting and he who gets in the grain may have joy together.`And he who is reaping doth receive a reward, and doth gather fruit to life age-during, that both he who is sowing and he who is reaping may rejoice together;
John 4:37For in this is [verified] the true saying, It is one who sows and another who reaps.In this the saying is a true one, One does the planting, and another gets in the grain.for in this the saying is the true one, that one is the sower and another the reaper.
John 4:38I have sent you to reap that on which ye have not laboured; others have laboured, and ye have entered into their labours.I sent you to get in grain which you had no hand in planting: other men did that work, and you take the reward.I sent you to reap that on which ye have not laboured; others laboured, and ye into their labour have entered.
John 4:39But many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him because of the word of the woman who bore witness, He told me all things that I had ever done.Now a number of the people of that town had faith in him because of the woman's witness: He has been talking to me of everything I ever did.And from that city many believed in him, of the Samaritans, because of the word of the woman testifying, `He told me all things as many as I did.`
John 4:40When therefore the Samaritans came to him they asked him to abide with them, and he abode there two days.So when the people came to him they made request to him to be among them for a time, and he was there two days.When, then, the Samaritans came unto him, they were asking him to remain with them, and he remained there two days;
John 4:41And more a great deal believed on account of his word;And a great number more of them came to have faith in him because of what he himself said.and many more did believe because of his word,
John 4:42and they said to the woman, [It is] no longer on account of thy saying that we believe, for we have heard him ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world.And they said to the woman, Now we have faith, but not because of your story: we ourselves have given ear to his words, and we are certain that he is truly the Saviour of the world.and said to the woman `No more because of thy speaking do we believe; for we ourselves have heard and known that this is truly the Saviour of the world the Christ.`
John 4:43But after the two days he went forth thence and went away into Galilee,And after the two days he went on from there into Galilee.And after the two days he went forth thence, and went away to Galilee,
John 4:44for Jesus himself bore witness that a prophet has no honour in his own country.For Jesus himself said that a prophet has no honour in the country of his birth.for Jesus himself testified that a prophet in his own country shall not have honour;
John 4:45When therefore he came into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem during the feast, for they also went to the feast.So when he came into Galilee, the Galilaeans took him to their hearts because of the things which they had seen him do in Jerusalem at the feast they themselves having been there at the feast.when then, he came to Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all things that he did in Jerusalem in the feast for they also went to the feast.
John 4:46He came therefore again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain courtier in Capernaum whose son was sick.So he came to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And there was a certain man of high position whose son was ill at Capernaum.Jesus came, therefore, again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine, and there was a certain courtier, whose son was ailing in Capernaum,
John 4:47He, having heard that Jesus had come out of Judaea into Galilee, went to him and asked [him] that he would come down and heal his son, for he was about to die.When it came to his ears that Jesus had come from Judaea into Galilee, he went to him and made a request that he would come down to his son, who was near to death, and make him well.he, having heard that Jesus is come out of Judea to Galilee, went away unto him, and was asking him that he may come down and may heal his son, for he was about to die.
John 4:48Jesus therefore said to him, Unless ye see signs and wonders ye will not believe.Then Jesus said to him, You will not have faith if you do not see signs and wonders.Jesus then said unto him, `If signs and wonders ye may not see, ye will not believe.`
John 4:49The courtier says to him, Sir, come down ere my child die.The man said, Sir, come down before my boy is dead.The courtier saith unto him, `Sir, come down before my child die;`
John 4:50Jesus says to him, Go, thy son lives. And the man believed the word which Jesus said to him, and went his way.And Jesus said, Go in peace; your son is living. The man had faith in the word which Jesus said to him and went away.Jesus saith to him, `Be going on; thy son doth live.` And the man believed the word that Jesus said to him, and was going on,
John 4:51But already, as he was going down, his servants met him and brought [him] word saying, Thy child lives.And while he was going down, his servants came to him and said, Your boy is living.and he now going down, his servants met him, and told, saying `Thy child doth live;`
John 4:52He inquired therefore from them the hour at which he got better. And they said to him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.So he put a question to them as to the hour when he became better; and they said to him, The disease went from him yesterday at the seventh hour.he inquired then of them the hour in which he became better, and they said to him `Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him;`
John 4:53The father therefore knew that [it was] in that hour in which Jesus said to him, Thy son lives; and he believed, himself and his whole house.It was clear then to the father that this was the very time at which Jesus said to him, Your son is living. And he had faith in Jesus, he and all his family.then the father knew that [it was] in that hour in which Jesus said to him `Thy son doth live,` and he himself believed, and his whole house;
John 4:54This second sign again did Jesus, being come out of Judaea into Galilee.Now this is the second sign which Jesus did after he had come out of Judaea into Galilee.this again a second sign did Jesus, having come out of Judea to Galilee.
