John 9:1 | And as he passed on, he saw a man blind from birth. | And when he went on his way, he saw a man blind from birth. | And passing by, he saw a man blind from birth, |
John 9:2 | And his disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi, who sinned, this [man] or his parents, that he should be born blind? | And his disciples put a question to him, saying, Master, was it because of this man's sin, or the sin of his father and mother, that he has been blind from birth? | and his disciples asked him, saying, `Rabbi, who did sin, this one or his parents, that he should be born blind?` |
John 9:3 | Jesus answered, Neither has this [man] sinned nor his parents, but that the works of God should be manifested in him. | Jesus said in answer, It was not because of his sin, or because of his father's or mother's; it was so that the works of God might be seen openly in him. | Jesus answered, `Neither did this one sin nor his parents, but that the works of God may be manifested in him; |
John 9:4 | I must work the works of him that has sent me while it is day. [The] night is coming, when no one can work. | While it is day we have to do the works of him who sent me: the night comes when no work may be done. | it behoveth me to be working the works of Him who sent me while it is day; night doth come, when no one is able to work: |
John 9:5 | As long as I am in the world, I am [the] light of the world. | As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. | when I am in the world, I am a light of the world.` |
John 9:6 | Having said these things, he spat on the ground and made mud of the spittle, and put the mud, as ointment, on his eyes. | Having said these words, he put earth, mixed with water from his mouth, on the man's eyes, | These things saying, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and rubbed the clay on the eyes of the blind man, and said to him, |
John 9:7 | And he said to him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, which is interpreted, Sent. He went therefore and washed, and came seeing. | And said to him, Go and make yourself clean in the bath of Siloam (the sense of the name is, Sent). So he went away and, after washing, came back able to see. | `Go away, wash at the pool of Siloam,` which is, interpreted, Sent. He went away, therefore, and did wash, and came seeing; |
John 9:8 | The neighbours therefore, and those who used to see him before, that he was a beggar, said, Is not this he that was sitting and begging? | Then the neighbours and others who had seen him before in the street, with his hand out for money, said, Is not this the man who got money from people? | the neighbours, therefore, and those seeing him before, that he was blind, said, `Is not this he who is sitting and begging?` |
John 9:9 | Some said, It is he; others said, No, but he is like him: *he* said, It is I. | Some said, It is he: others said, No, but he is like him. He said, I am he. | others said `This is he;` and others `He is like to him;` he himself said, `I am [he].` |
John 9:10 | They said therefore to him, How have thine eyes been opened? | So they said to him, How then were your eyes made open? | They said, therefore, to him, `How were thine eyes opened?` |
John 9:11 | He answered [and said], A man called Jesus made mud and anointed mine eyes, and said to me, Go to Siloam and wash: and having gone and washed, I saw. | His answer was: The man who is named Jesus put earth mixed with water on my eyes, and said to me, Go and make yourself clean in Siloam: so I went away and, after washing, am now able to see. | he answered and said, `A man called Jesus made clay, and rubbed my eyes, and said to me, Go away to the pool of Siloam, and wash; and having gone away and having washed, I received sight;` |
John 9:12 | They said therefore to him, Where is he? He says, I do not know. | And they said to him, Where is he? His answer was: I have no knowledge. | they said, therefore, to him, `Where is that one?` he saith, `I have not known.` |
John 9:13 | They bring him who was before blind to the Pharisees. | They took him before the Pharisees this man who had been blind. | They bring him to the Pharisees who once [was] blind, |
John 9:14 | Now it was sabbath when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. | Now the day on which the earth was mixed by Jesus and the man's eyes were made open was the Sabbath. | and it was a sabbath when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes. |
John 9:15 | The Pharisees therefore also again asked him how he received his sight. And he said to them, He put mud upon mine eyes, and I washed, and I see. | So the Pharisees put more questions to him about how his eyes had been made open. And he said to them, He put earth on my eyes, and I had a wash and am able to see. | Again, therefore, the Pharisees also were asking him how he received sight, and he said to them, `Clay he did put upon my eyes, and I did wash and I see.` |
John 9:16 | Some of the Pharisees therefore said, This man is not of God, for he does not keep the sabbath. Others said, How can a sinful man perform such signs? And there was a division among them. | Then some of the Pharisees said, That man has not come from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath. Others said, How is it possible for a sinner to do such signs? So there was a division among them. | Of the Pharisees, therefore, certain said, `This man is not from God, because the sabbath he doth not keep;` others said, `How is a man a sinful one able to do such signs?` and there was a division among them. |
John 9:17 | They say therefore again to the blind [man], What dost thou say of him, that he has opened thine eyes? And he said, He is a prophet. | Again they said to the blind man, What have you to say about him for opening your eyes? And he said, He is a prophet. | They said to the blind man again, `Thou what dost thou say of him that he opened thine eyes?` |
John 9:18 | The Jews therefore did not believe concerning him that he was blind and had received sight, until they had called the parents of him that had received sight. | Now the Jews had no belief in the statement that he had been blind and was now able to see, till they sent for the father and mother of the man whose eyes had been made open, | and he said `He is a prophet.` The Jews, therefore, did not believe concerning him that he was blind and did receive sight, till that they called the parents of him who received sight, |
John 9:19 | And they asked them saying, This is your son, of whom ye say that he was born blind: how then does he now see? | And put the question to them, saying, Is this your son, of whom you say that he was blind at birth? how is it then that he is now able to see? | and they asked them, saying, `Is your son, of whom ye say that he was born blind? how then now doth he see?` |
John 9:20 | His parents answered [them] and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; | In answer his father and mother said, We are certain that this is our son and that he was blind at birth: | His parents answered them and said, `We have known that this is our son, and that he was born blind; |
John 9:21 | but how he now sees we do not know, or who has opened his eyes we do not know. *He* is of age: ask *him*; *he* will speak concerning himself. | But how it is he is now able to see, or who made his eyes open, we are not able to say: put the question to him; he is old enough to give an answer for himself. | and how he now seeth, we have not known; or who opened his eyes, we have not known; himself is of age, ask him; he himself shall speak concerning himself.` |
John 9:22 | His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if any one confessed him [to be the] Christ, he should be excommunicated from the synagogue. | They said this because of their fear of the Jews: for the Jews had come to an agreement that if any man said that Jesus was the Christ he would be put out of the Synagogue. | These things said his parents, because they were afraid of the Jews, for already had the Jews agreed together, that if any one may confess him Christ, he may be put out of the synagogue; |
John 9:23 | On this account his parents said, He is of age: ask *him*. | That was the reason why they said, He is old enough; put the question to him. | because of this his parents said `He is of age, ask him.` |
John 9:24 | They called therefore a second time the man who had been blind, and said to him, Give glory to God: we know that this man is sinful. | So they sent a second time for the man who had been blind and they said to him, Give glory to God: it is clear to us that this man is a sinner. | They called, therefore, a second time the man who was blind, and they said to him, `Give glory to God, we have known that this man is a sinner;` |
John 9:25 | He answered therefore, If he is sinful I know not. One thing I know, that, being blind [before], now I see. | He said in answer, I have no knowledge if he is a sinner or not, but one thing I am certain about; I was blind, and now I see. | he answered, therefore, and said, `If he be a sinner I have not known, one thing I have known, that, being blind, now I see.` |
John 9:26 | And they said to him again, What did he do to thee? how opened he thine eyes? | Then they said to him, What did he do to you? how did he give you the use of your eyes? | And they said to him again, `What did he to thee? how did he open thine eyes?` |
John 9:27 | He answered them, I told you already and ye did not hear: why do ye desire to hear again? do ye also wish to become his disciples? | His answer was: I have said it before, but your ears were shut: why would you have me say it again? is it your desire to become his disciples? | He answered them, `I told you already, and ye did not hear; why again do ye wish to hear? do ye also wish to become his disciples?` |
John 9:28 | They railed at him, and said, Thou art his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. | And they were angry with him and said, You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. | They reviled him, therefore, and said, `Thou art his disciple, and we are Moses` disciples; |
John 9:29 | We know that God spoke to Moses; but [as to] this [man], we know not whence he is. | We are certain that God gave his word to Moses: but as for this man, we have no knowledge where he comes from. | we have known that God hath spoken to Moses, but this one we have not known whence he is.` |
John 9:30 | The man answered and said to them, Now in this is a wonderful thing, that *ye* do not know whence he is, and he has opened mine eyes. | The man said in answer, Why, here is a strange thing! You have no knowledge where he comes from though he gave me the use of my eyes. | The man answered and said to them, `Why, in this is a wonderful thing, that ye have not known whence he is, and he opened my eyes! |
John 9:31 | [But] we know that God does not hear sinners; but if any one be God-fearing and do his will, him he hears. | We have knowledge that God does not give ear to sinners, but if any man is a worshipper of God and does his pleasure, to him God's ears are open. | and we have known that God doth not hear sinners, but, if any one may be a worshipper of God, and may do His will, him He doth hear; |
John 9:32 | Since time was, it has not been heard that any one opened the eyes of one born blind. | In all the years nobody has ever before seen the eyes of a man blind from birth made open. | from the age it was not heard, that any one did open eyes of one who hath been born blind; |
John 9:33 | If this [man] were not of God he would be able to do nothing. | If this man did not come from God he would be unable to do anything. | if this one were not from God, he were not able to do anything.` |
John 9:34 | They answered and said to him, Thou hast been wholly born in sins, and thou teachest us? And they cast him out. | Their answer was: You came to birth through sin; do you make yourself our teacher? And they put him out of the Synagogue. | They answered and said to him, `In sins thou wast born altogether, and thou dost teach us!` and they cast him forth without. |
John 9:35 | Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him, he said to him, Thou, dost thou believe on the Son of God? | It came to the ears of Jesus that they had put him out, and meeting him he said, Have you faith in the Son of man? | Jesus heard that they cast him forth without, and having found him, he said to him, `Dost thou believe in the Son of God?` |
John 9:36 | He answered and said, And who is he, Lord, that I may believe on him? | He said in answer, And who is he, Lord? Say, so that I may have faith in him. | he answered and said, `Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?` |
John 9:37 | And Jesus said to him, Thou hast both seen him, and he that speaks with thee is he. | Jesus said to him, You have seen him; it is he who is talking to you. | And Jesus said to him, `Thou hast both seen him, and he who is speaking with thee is he;` |
John 9:38 | And he said, I believe, Lord: and he did him homage. | And he said, Lord, I have faith. And he gave him worship. | and he said, `I believe, sir,` and bowed before him. |
John 9:39 | And Jesus said, For judgment am I come into this world, that they which see not may see, and they which see may become blind. | And Jesus said, I came into this world to be a judge, so that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind. | And Jesus said, `For judgment I to this world did come, that those not seeing may see, and those seeing may become blind.` |
John 9:40 | And [some] of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and they said to him, Are we blind also? | These words came to the ears of the Pharisees who were with him and they said to him, Are we, then, blind? | And those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and they said to him, `Are we also blind?` |
John 9:41 | Jesus said to them, If ye were blind ye would not have sin; but now ye say, We see, your sin remains. | Jesus said to them, If you were blind you would have no sin: but now that you say, We see; your sin is there still. | Jesus said to them, `If ye were blind, ye were not having had sin, but now ye say We see, therefore doth your sin remain. |
