Genesis 11:1 | And the whole earth had one language, and the same words. | And the earth was of one tongue, and of the same speech. | And all the earth had one language and one tongue. |
Genesis 11:2 | And it came to pass as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and dwelt there. | And when they removed from the east, they found a plain in the land of Sennaar, and dwelt in it. | And it came about that in their wandering from the east, they came to a stretch of flat country in the land of Shinar, and there they made their living-place. |
Genesis 11:3 | And they said one to another, Come on, let us make bricks, and burn [them] thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar. | And each one said to his neighbour: Come, let us make brick, and bake them of stones, and slime instead of mortar. | And they said one to another, Come, let us make bricks, burning them well. And they had bricks for stone, putting them together with sticky earth. |
Genesis 11:4 | And they said, Come on, let us build ourselves a city and a tower, the top of which [may reach] to the heavens; and let us make ourselves a name, lest we be scattered over the face of the whole earth. | And they said: Come, let us make a city and a tower, the top whereof may reach to heaven: and let us make our name famous before we be scattered abroad into all lands. | And they said, Come, let us make a town, and a tower whose top will go up as high as heaven; and let us make a great name for ourselves, so that we may not be wanderers over the face of the earth. |
Genesis 11:5 | And Jehovah came down to see the city and the tower which the children of men built. | And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of Adam were building. | And the Lord came down to see the town and the tower which the children of men were building. |
Genesis 11:6 | And Jehovah said, Behold, the people is one, and have all one language; and this have they begun to do. And now will they be hindered in nothing that they meditate doing. | And he said: Behold, it is one people, and all have one tongue: and they have begun to do this, neither will they leave off from their designs, till they accomplish them in deed. | And the Lord said, See, they are all one people and have all one language; and this is only the start of what they may do: and now it will not be possible to keep them from any purpose of theirs. |
Genesis 11:7 | Come, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. | Come ye, therefore, let us go down, and there may not understand one another's speech. | Come, let us go down and take away the sense of their language, so that they will not be able to make themselves clear to one another. |
Genesis 11:8 | And Jehovah scattered them thence over the face of the whole earth. And they left off building the city. | And so the Lord scattered them from that place into all lands, and they ceased to build the city. | So the Lord God sent them away into every part of the earth: and they gave up building their town. |
Genesis 11:9 | Therefore was its name called Babel; because Jehovah there confounded the language of the whole earth. And Jehovah scattered them thence over the face of the whole earth. | And therefore the name thereof was called Babel, because there the language of the whole earth was confounded: and from thence the Lord scattered them abroad upon the face of all countries. | So it was named Babel, because there the Lord took away the sense of all languages and from there the Lord sent them away over all the face of the earth. |
