John 11:1Now there was a certain [man] sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister.Now there was a certain man sick, named Lazarus, of Bethania, of the town of Mary and Martha her sister.Now a certain man named Lazarus was ill; he was of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.
John 11:2It was [the] Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.(And Mary was she that anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair: whose brother Lazarus was sick.)(The Mary whose brother Lazarus was ill, was the Mary who put perfumed oil on the Lord and made his feet dry with her hair.)
John 11:3The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.His sisters therefore sent to him, saying: Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.So the sisters sent to him, saying, Lord, your dear friend is ill.
John 11:4But when Jesus heard [it], he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified by it.And Jesus hearing it, said to them: This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God: that the Son of God may be glorified by it.When this came to his ears, Jesus said, The end of this disease is not death, but the glory of God, so that the Son of God may have glory because of it.
John 11:5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister Mary, and Lazarus.Now Jesus had love in his heart for Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
John 11:6When therefore he heard, He is sick, he remained two days then in the place where he was.When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he still remained in the same place two days.So when the news came to him that Lazarus was ill, he did not go from the place where he was for two days.
John 11:7Then after this he says to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.Then after that, he said to his disciples: Let us go into Judea again.Then after that time he said to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.
John 11:8The disciples say to him, Rabbi, [even but] now the Jews sought to stone thee, and goest thou thither again?The disciples say to him: Rabbi, the Jews but now sought to stone thee: and goest thou thither again?The disciples said to him, Master, the Jews were attempting only the other day to have you stoned, and are you going back there again?
John 11:9Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any one walk in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world;Jesus answered: Are there not twelve hours of the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world:Then Jesus said in answer, Are there not twelve hours in the day? A man may go about in the day without falling, because he sees the light of this world.
John 11:10but if any one walk in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.But if he walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.But if a man goes about in the night, he may have a fall because the light is not in him.
John 11:11These things said he; and after this he says to them, Lazarus, our friend, is fallen asleep, but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.These things he said; and after that he said to them: Lazarus our friend sleepeth; but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.These things said he: and after that he said to them, Lazarus our friend is at rest; but I go so that I may make him come out of his sleep.
John 11:12The disciples therefore said to him, Lord, if he be fallen asleep, he will get well.His disciples therefore said: Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.Then his disciples said to him, Lord, if he is resting he will get well.
John 11:13But Jesus spoke of his death, but *they* thought that he spoke of the rest of sleep.But Jesus spoke of his death; and they thought that he spoke of the repose of sleep.Jesus, however, was talking of his death: but they had the idea that he was talking about taking rest in sleep.
John 11:14Jesus therefore then said to them plainly, Lazarus has died.Then therefore Jesus said to them plainly: Lazarus is dead.Then Jesus said to them clearly, Lazarus is dead.
John 11:15And I rejoice on your account that I was not there, in order that ye may believe. But let us go to him.And I am glad, for your sakes, that I was not there, that you may believe: but let us go to him.And because of you I am glad I was not there, so that you may have faith; but let us go to him.
John 11:16Thomas therefore, called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, Let *us* also go, that we may die with him.Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples: Let us also go, that we may die with him.Then Thomas, who was named Didymus, said to the other disciples, Let us go so that we may be with him in death.
John 11:17Jesus therefore [on] arriving found him to have been four days already in the tomb.Jesus therefore came, and found that he had been four days already in the grave.Now when Jesus came, he made the discovery that Lazarus had been put into the earth four days before.
John 11:18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia off,(Now Bethania was near Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off.)Now Bethany was near to Jerusalem, about two miles away;
John 11:19and many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, that they might console them concerning their brother.And many of the Jews were come to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.And a number of Jews had come to Martha and Mary to give them comfort about their brother.
John 11:20Martha then, when she heard Jesus is coming, went to meet him; but Mary sat in the house.Martha therefore, as soon as she heard that Jesus had come, went to meet him: but Mary sat at home.When Martha had the news that Jesus was on the way, she went out to him, but Mary did not go from the house.
John 11:21Martha therefore said to Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;Martha therefore said to Jesus: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.Then Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead.
John 11:22but even now I know, that whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee.But now also I know that whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.But I am certain that, even now, whatever request you make to God, God will give it to you.
John 11:23Jesus says to her, Thy brother shall rise again.Jesus saith to her: Thy brother shall rise again.Jesus said to her, Your brother will come to life again.
John 11:24Martha says to him, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection in the last day.Martha saith to him: I know that he shall rise again, in the resurrection at the last day.Martha said to him, I am certain that he will come to life again when all come back from the dead at the last day.
John 11:25Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that believes on me, though he have died, shall live;Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, although he be dead, shall live:Jesus said to her, I am myself that day and that life; he who has faith in me will have life even if he is dead;
John 11:26and every one who lives and believes on me shall never die. Believest thou this?And every one that liveth, and believeth in me, shall not die for ever. Believest thou this?And no one who is living and has faith in me will ever see death. Is this your faith?
John 11:27She says to him, Yea, Lord; I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who should come into the world.She saith to him: Yea, Lord, I have believed that thou art Christ the Son of the living God, who art come into this world.She said to him, Yes, Lord: my faith is that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.
John 11:28And having said this, she went away and called her sister Mary secretly, saying, The teacher is come and calls thee.And when she had said these things, she went, and called her sister Mary secretly, saying: The master is come, and calleth for thee.And having said this, she went away and said secretly to her sister Mary, The Master is here and has sent for you.
John 11:29She, when she heard [that], rises up quickly and comes to him.She, as soon as she heard this, riseth quickly, and cometh to him.And Mary, hearing this, got up quickly and went to him.
John 11:30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha came to meet him.For Jesus was not yet come into the town: but he was still in that place where Martha had met him.Now Jesus had not at this time come into the town, but was still in the place where Martha had seen him.
John 11:31The Jews therefore who were with her in the house and consoling her, seeing Mary that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, She goes to the tomb, that she may weep there.The Jews therefore, who were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary that she rose up speedily and went out, followed her, saying: She goeth to the grave to weep there.Then the Jews who were with her in the house, comforting her, when they saw Mary get up quickly and go out, went after her in the belief that she was going to the place of the dead and would be weeping there.
John 11:32Mary therefore, when she came where Jesus was, seeing him, fell at his feet, saying to him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.When Mary therefore was come where Jesus was, seeing him, she fell down at his feet, and saith to him: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she went down at his feet, saying, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead.
John 11:33Jesus therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, was deeply moved in spirit, and was troubled,Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews that were come with her, weeping, groaned in the spirit, and troubled himself,And when Jesus saw her weeping, and saw the Jews weeping who came with her, his spirit was moved and he was troubled,
John 11:34and said, Where have ye put him? They say to him, Lord, come and see.And said: Where have you laid him? They say to him: Lord, come and see.And said, Where have you put him? They said, Come and see, Lord.
John 11:35Jesus wept.And Jesus wept.And Jesus himself was weeping.
John 11:36The Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him!The Jews therefore said: Behold how he loved him.So the Jews said, See how dear he was to him!
John 11:37And some of them said, Could not this [man], who has opened the eyes of the blind [man], have caused that this [man] also should not have died?But some of them said: Could not he that opened the eyes of the man born blind, have caused that this man should not die?But some of them said, This man, who made open the eyes of the blind man, was he not able to keep his friend from death?
John 11:38Jesus therefore, again deeply moved in himself, comes to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.Jesus therefore again groaning in himself, cometh to the sepulchre. Now it was a cave; and a stone was laid over it.So Jesus, deeply troubled in heart, came to the place of the dead. It was a hole in the rock, and a stone was over the opening.
John 11:39Jesus says, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead, says to him, Lord, he stinks already, for he is four days [there].Jesus saith: Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith to him: Lord, by this time he stinketh, for he is now of four days.Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said, Lord, by this time the body will be smelling, for he has been dead four days.
John 11:40Jesus says to her, Did I not say to thee, that if thou shouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?Jesus saith to her: Did not I say to thee, that if thou believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?Jesus said to her, Did I not say to you that if you had faith you would see the glory of God?
John 11:41They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifted up his eyes on high and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me;They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifting up his eyes said: Father, I give thee thanks that thou hast heard me.So they took away the stone. And Jesus, looking up to heaven, said, Father, I give praise to you for hearing me.
John 11:42but I knew that thou always hearest me; but on account of the crowd who stand around I have said [it], that they may believe that thou hast sent me.And I knew that thou hearest me always; but because of the people who stand about have I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.I was certain that your ears are at all times open to me, but I said it because of these who are here, so that they may see that you sent me.
John 11:43And having said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.When he had said these things, he cried with a loud voice: Lazarus, come forth.Then he said in a loud voice, Lazarus, come out!
John 11:44And the dead came forth, bound feet and hands with graveclothes, and his face was bound round with a handkerchief. Jesus says to them, Loose him and let him go.And presently he that had been dead came forth, bound feet and hands with winding bands; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said to them: Loose him, and let him go.And he who was dead came out, with linen bands folded tightly about his hands and feet, and a cloth about his face. Jesus said to them, Make him free and let him go.
John 11:45Many therefore of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what he had done, believed on him;Many therefore of the Jews, who were come to Mary and Martha, and had seen the things that Jesus did, believed in him.Then a number of the Jews who had come to Mary and had seen the things which Jesus did had belief in him.
John 11:46but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.But some of them went to the Pharisees, and told them the things that Jesus had done.But some of them went to the Pharisees with the news of what Jesus had done.
John 11:47The chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What do we? for this man does many signs.The chief priests therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered a council, and said: What do we, for this man doth many miracles?Then the high priests and the Pharisees had a meeting and said, What are we doing? This man is doing a number of signs.
John 11:48If we let him thus alone, all will believe on him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.If we let him alone so, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and take away our place and nation.If we let him go on in this way, everybody will have belief in him and the Romans will come and take away our place and our nation.
John 11:49But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, Ye know nothingBut one of them, named Caiphas, being the high priest that year, said to them: You know nothing.But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, You have no knowledge of anything;
John 11:50nor consider that it is profitable for you that one man die for the people, and not that the whole nation perish.Neither do you consider that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.You do not see that it is in your interest for one man to be put to death for the people, so that all the nation may not come to destruction.
John 11:51But this he did not say of himself; but, being high priest that year, prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation;And this he spoke not of himself: but being the high priest of that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation.He did not say this of himself, but being the high priest that year he said, as a prophet, that Jesus would be put to death for the nation;
John 11:52and not for the nation only, but that he should also gather together into one the children of God who were scattered abroad.And not only for the nation, but to gather together in one the children of God, that were dispersed.And not for that nation only, but for the purpose of uniting in one body the children of God all over the world.
John 11:53From that day therefore they took counsel that they might kill him.From that day therefore they devised to put him to death.And from that day they took thought together how to put him to death.
John 11:54Jesus therefore walked no longer openly among the Jews, but went away thence into the country near the desert, to a city called Ephraim, and there he sojourned with the disciples.Wherefore Jesus walked no more openly among the Jews; but he went into a country near the desert, unto a city that is called Ephrem, and there he abode with his disciples.So Jesus no longer went about publicly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near to the waste land, to a town named Ephraim, where he was for some time with the disciples.
John 11:55But the passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves.And the pasch of the Jews was at hand; and many from the country went up to Jerusalem, before the pasch to purify themselves.Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and numbers of people went up from the country to Jerusalem to make themselves clean before the Passover.
John 11:56They sought therefore Jesus, and said among themselves, standing in the temple, What do ye think? that he will not come to the feast?They sought therefore for Jesus; and they discoursed one with another, standing in the temple: What think you that he is not come to the festival day? And the chief priests and Pharisees had given a commandment, that if any man knew where he was, he should tell, that they might apprehend him.They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another while they were in the Temple, What is your opinion? Will he not come to the feast?
John 11:57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandment that if any one knew where he was, he should make it known, that they might take him.Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone had knowledge where he was, he was to give them word, so that they might take him.
