John 4:1 | When therefore the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus makes and baptises more disciples than John | When Jesus therefore understood that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus maketh more disciples, and baptizeth more than John, | Now when it was clear to the Lord that word had come to the ears of the Pharisees that Jesus was making more disciples than John and was giving them baptism |
John 4:2 | (however, Jesus himself did not baptise, but his disciples), | (Though Jesus himself did not baptize, but his disciples,) | (Though, in fact, it was his disciples who gave baptism, not Jesus himself), |
John 4:3 | he left Judaea and went away again unto Galilee. | He left Judea, and went again into Galilee. | He went out of Judaea into Galilee again. |
John 4:4 | And he must needs pass through Samaria. | And he was of necessity to pass through Samaria. | And it was necessary for him to go through Samaria. |
John 4:5 | He comes therefore to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near to the land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph. | He cometh therefore to a city of Samaria, which is called Sichar, near the land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph. | So he came to a town of Samaria which was named Sychar, near to the bit of land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph: |
John 4:6 | Now a fountain of Jacob's was there; Jesus therefore, being wearied with the way he had come, sat just as he was at the fountain. It was about the sixth hour. | Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well. It was about the sixth hour. | Now Jacob's fountain was there. Jesus, being tired after his journey, was resting by the fountain. It was about the sixth hour. |
John 4:7 | A woman comes out of Samaria to draw water. Jesus says to her, Give me to drink | There cometh a woman of Samaria, to draw water. Jesus saith to her: Give me to drink. | A woman of Samaria came to get water, and Jesus said to her, Give me some water. |
John 4:8 | (for his disciples had gone away into the city that they might buy provisions). | For his disciples were gone into the city to buy meats. | For his disciples had gone to the town to get food. |
John 4:9 | The Samaritan woman therefore says to him, How dost thou, being a Jew, ask to drink of me who am a Samaritan woman? for Jews have no intercourse with Samaritans. | Then that Samaritan woman saith to him: How dost thou, being a Jew, ask of me to drink, who am a Samaritan woman? For the Jews do not communicate with the Samaritans. | The woman of Samaria said to him, Why do you, a Jew, make a request for water to me, a woman of Samaria? She said this because Jews have nothing to do with the people of Samaria. |
John 4:10 | Jesus answered and said to her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that says to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. | Jesus answered, and said to her: If thou didst know the gift of God, and who he is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou perhaps wouldst have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. | In answer Jesus said, If you had knowledge of what God gives freely and who it is who says to you, Give me water, you would make your prayer to him, and he would give you living water. |
John 4:11 | The woman says to him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: whence then hast thou the living water? | The woman saith to him: Sir, thou hast nothing wherein to draw, and the well is deep; from whence then hast thou living water? | The woman said to him, Sir, you have no vessel and the fountain is deep; from where will you get the living water? |
John 4:12 | Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself, and his sons, and his cattle? | Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? | Are you greater than our father Jacob who gave us the fountain and took the water of it himself, with his children and his cattle? |
John 4:13 | Jesus answered and said to her, Every one who drinks of this water shall thirst again; | Jesus answered, and said to her: Whosoever drinketh of this water, shall thirst again; but he that shall drink of the water that I will give him, shall not thirst for ever: | Jesus said to her, Everyone who takes this water will be in need of it again: |
John 4:14 | but whosoever drinks of the water which I shall give him shall never thirst for ever, but the water which I shall give him shall become in him a fountain of water, springing up into eternal life. | But the water that I will give him, shall become in him a fountain of water, springing up into life everlasting. | But whoever takes the water I give him will never be in need of drink again; for the water I give him will become in him a fountain of eternal life. |
John 4:15 | The woman says to him, Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst nor come here to draw. | The woman saith to him: Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come hither to draw. | The woman said to him, Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be in need again of drink and will not have to come all this way for it. |
John 4:16 | Jesus says to her, Go, call thy husband, and come here. | Jesus saith to her: Go, call thy husband, and come hither. 17 The woman answered, and said: I have no husband. Jesus said to her: Thou hast said well, I have no husband: | Jesus said to her, Go, get your husband and come back here with him. |
John 4:17 | The woman answered and said, I have not a husband. Jesus says to her, Thou hast well said, I have not a husband; | For thou hast had five husbands: and he whom thou now hast, is not thy husband. This thou hast said truly. | In answer, the woman said, I have no husband. Jesus said to her, You have said rightly, I have no husband: |
John 4:18 | for thou hast had five husbands, and he whom now thou hast is not thy husband: this thou hast spoken truly. | The woman saith to him: Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. | You have had five husbands, and the man you have now is not your husband: that was truly said. |
John 4:19 | The woman says to him, Sir, I see that thou art a prophet. | Our fathers adored on this mountain, and you say, that at Jerusalem is the place where men must adore. | The woman said to him, Sir, I see that you are a prophet. |
John 4:20 | Our fathers worshipped in this mountain, and ye say that in Jerusalem is the place where one must worship. | Jesus saith to her: Woman, believe me, that the hour cometh, when you shall neither on this mountain, not in Jerusalem, adore the Father. | Our fathers gave worship on this mountain, but you Jews say that the right place for worship is in Jerusalem. |
John 4:21 | Jesus says to her, Woman, believe me, [the] hour is coming when ye shall neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem worship the Father. | You adore that which you know not: we adore that which we know; for salvation is of the Jews. | Jesus said to her, Woman, take my word for this; the time is coming when you will not give worship to the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem. |
John 4:22 | Ye worship ye know not what; we worship what we know, for salvation is of the Jews. | But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true adorers shall adore the Father in spirit and in truth. For the Father also seeketh such to adore him. | You give worship, but without knowledge of what you are worshipping: we give worship to what we have knowledge of: for salvation comes from the Jews. |
John 4:23 | But [the] hour is coming and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth; for also the Father seeks such as his worshippers. | God is a spirit; and they that adore him, must adore him in spirit and in truth. | But the time is coming, and is even now here, when the true worshippers will give worship to the Father in the true way of the spirit, for these are the worshippers desired by the Father. |
John 4:24 | God [is] a spirit; and they who worship him must worship [him] in spirit and truth. | The woman saith to him: I know that the Messias cometh (who is called Christ); therefore, when he is come, he will tell us all things. | God is Spirit: then let his worshippers give him worship in the true way of the spirit. |
John 4:25 | The woman says to him, I know that Messias is coming, who is called Christ; when *he* comes he will tell us all things. | Jesus saith to her: I am he, who am speaking with thee. | The woman said to him, I am certain that the Messiah, who is named Christ, is coming; when he comes he will make all things clear to us. |
John 4:26 | Jesus says to her, I who speak to thee am [he]. | And immediately his disciples came; and they wondered that he talked with the woman. Yet no man said: What seekest thou? or, why talkest thou with her? | Jesus said to her, I, who am talking to you, am he. |
John 4:27 | And upon this came his disciples, and wondered that he spoke with a woman; yet no one said, What seekest thou? or, Why speakest thou with her? | The woman therefore left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men there: | At that point the disciples came back, and they were surprised to see him talking to a woman; but not one of them said to him, What is your purpose? or, Why are you talking to her? |
John 4:28 | The woman then left her waterpot and went away into the city, and says to the men, | Come, and see a man who has told me all things whatsoever I have done. Is not he the Christ? | Then the woman put down her water-pot and went into the town, and said to the people, |
John 4:29 | Come, see a man who told me all things I had ever done: is not he the Christ? | They went therefore out of the city, and came unto him. | Come and see a man who has been talking to me of everything I ever did! Is it possible that this is the Christ? |
John 4:30 | They went out of the city and came to him. | In the mean time the disciples prayed him, saying: Rabbi, eat. | So they went out of the town and came to him. |
John 4:31 | But meanwhile the disciples asked him saying, Rabbi, eat. | But he said to them: I have meat to eat, which you know not. | While this was taking place, the disciples were saying to Jesus, Master, take some food. |
John 4:32 | But he said to them, I have food to eat which ye do not know. | The disciples therefore said one to another: Hath any man brought him to eat? | But he said to them, I have food of which you have no knowledge. |
John 4:33 | The disciples therefore said to one another, Has any one brought him [anything] to eat? | Jesus saith to them: My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, that I may perfect his work. | So the disciples said one to another, Did anyone give him food? |
John 4:34 | Jesus says to them, My food is that I should do the will of him that has sent me, and that I should finish his work. | Do you not say, There are yet four months, and then the harvest cometh? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes, and see the countries; for they are white already to harvest. | Jesus said, My food is to do the pleasure of him who sent me and to make his work complete. |
John 4:35 | Do not ye say, that there are yet four months and the harvest comes? Behold, I say to you, Lift up your eyes and behold the fields, for they are already white to harvest. | And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life everlasting: that both he that soweth, and he that reapeth, may rejoice together. | You would say, Four months from now is the time of the grain-cutting. Take a look, I say to you, at the fields; they are even now white for cutting. |
John 4:36 | He that reaps receives wages and gathers fruit unto life eternal, that both he that sows and he that reaps may rejoice together. | For in this is the saying true: That it is one man that soweth, and it is another that reapeth. | He who does the cutting now has his reward; he is getting together fruit for eternal life, so that he who did the planting and he who gets in the grain may have joy together. |
John 4:37 | For in this is [verified] the true saying, It is one who sows and another who reaps. | I have sent you to reap that in which you did not labour: others have laboured, and you have entered into their labours. | In this the saying is a true one, One does the planting, and another gets in the grain. |
John 4:38 | I have sent you to reap that on which ye have not laboured; others have laboured, and ye have entered into their labours. | Now of that city many of the Samaritans believed in him, for the word of the woman giving testimony: He told me all things whatsoever I have done. | I sent you to get in grain which you had no hand in planting: other men did that work, and you take the reward. |
John 4:39 | But many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him because of the word of the woman who bore witness, He told me all things that I had ever done. | So when the Samaritans were come to him, they desired that he would tarry there. And he abode there two days. | Now a number of the people of that town had faith in him because of the woman's witness: He has been talking to me of everything I ever did. |
John 4:40 | When therefore the Samaritans came to him they asked him to abide with them, and he abode there two days. | And many more believed in him because of his own word. | So when the people came to him they made request to him to be among them for a time, and he was there two days. |
John 4:41 | And more a great deal believed on account of his word; | And they said to the woman: We now believe, not for thy saying: for we ourselves have heard him, and know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world. | And a great number more of them came to have faith in him because of what he himself said. |
John 4:42 | and they said to the woman, [It is] no longer on account of thy saying that we believe, for we have heard him ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world. | Now after two days, he departed thence, and went into Galilee. | And they said to the woman, Now we have faith, but not because of your story: we ourselves have given ear to his words, and we are certain that he is truly the Saviour of the world. |
John 4:43 | But after the two days he went forth thence and went away into Galilee, | For Jesus himself gave testimony that a prophet hath no honour in his own country. | And after the two days he went on from there into Galilee. |
John 4:44 | for Jesus himself bore witness that a prophet has no honour in his own country. | And when he was come into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all the things he had done at Jerusalem on the festival day; for they also went to the festival day. | For Jesus himself said that a prophet has no honour in the country of his birth. |
John 4:45 | When therefore he came into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem during the feast, for they also went to the feast. | He came again therefore into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain ruler, whose son was sick at Capharnaum. | So when he came into Galilee, the Galilaeans took him to their hearts because of the things which they had seen him do in Jerusalem at the feast they themselves having been there at the feast. |
John 4:46 | He came therefore again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain courtier in Capernaum whose son was sick. | He having heard that Jesus was come from Judea into Galilee, went to him, and prayed him to come down, and heal his son; for he was at the point of death. | So he came to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And there was a certain man of high position whose son was ill at Capernaum. |
John 4:47 | He, having heard that Jesus had come out of Judaea into Galilee, went to him and asked [him] that he would come down and heal his son, for he was about to die. | Jesus therefore said to him: Unless you see signs and wonders, you believe not. | When it came to his ears that Jesus had come from Judaea into Galilee, he went to him and made a request that he would come down to his son, who was near to death, and make him well. |
John 4:48 | Jesus therefore said to him, Unless ye see signs and wonders ye will not believe. | The ruler saith to him: Lord, come down before that my son die. | Then Jesus said to him, You will not have faith if you do not see signs and wonders. |
John 4:49 | The courtier says to him, Sir, come down ere my child die. | Jesus saith to him: Go thy way; thy son liveth. The man believed the word which Jesus said to him, and went his way. | The man said, Sir, come down before my boy is dead. |
John 4:50 | Jesus says to him, Go, thy son lives. And the man believed the word which Jesus said to him, and went his way. | And as he was going down, his servants met him; and they brought word, saying, that his son lived. | And Jesus said, Go in peace; your son is living. The man had faith in the word which Jesus said to him and went away. |
John 4:51 | But already, as he was going down, his servants met him and brought [him] word saying, Thy child lives. | He asked therefore of them the hour wherein he grew better. And they said to him: Yesterday, at the seventh hour, the fever left him. | And while he was going down, his servants came to him and said, Your boy is living. |
John 4:52 | He inquired therefore from them the hour at which he got better. And they said to him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. | The father therefore knew, that it was at the same hour that Jesus said to him, Thy son liveth; and himself believed, and his whole house. | So he put a question to them as to the hour when he became better; and they said to him, The disease went from him yesterday at the seventh hour. |
John 4:53 | The father therefore knew that [it was] in that hour in which Jesus said to him, Thy son lives; and he believed, himself and his whole house. | This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judea into Galilee. | It was clear then to the father that this was the very time at which Jesus said to him, Your son is living. And he had faith in Jesus, he and all his family. |
John 4:54 | This second sign again did Jesus, being come out of Judaea into Galilee. | | Now this is the second sign which Jesus did after he had come out of Judaea into Galilee. |
