Judges 18:1 | In those days there was no king in Israel, and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought for themselves an inheritance to dwell in; for to that day [their lot] had not fallen to them for inheritance among the tribes of Israel. | In those days there was no king in Israel, and the tribe of Dan sought them an inheritance to dwell in: for unto that day they had not received their lot among the other tribes. | In those days there was no king in Israel, and in those days the Danites were looking for a heritage for themselves, to be their living-place; for up to that time no distribution of land had been made to them among the tribes of Israel. |
Judges 18:2 | And the children of Dan sent of their family five men of their whole number, men of valour, from Zoreah and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to examine it; and they said to them, Go, examine the land. And they came to the hill-country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, and lodged there. | So the children of Dan sent five most valiant men of their stock and family from Saraa and Esthaol, to spy out the land, and to view it diligently: and they said to them: Go, and view the land. They went on their way, and when they came to mount Ephraim, they went into the house of Michas, and rested there: | So the children of Dan sent five men from among their number, strong men, from Zorah and from Eshtaol, to take a look at the land and make a search through it; and they said to them, Go and make a search through the land; and they came to the hill-country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, where they made a stop for the night. |
Judges 18:3 | When they were by the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the young man, the Levite; and they turned in thither, and said to him, Who brought thee hither? and what doest thou in this [place]? and what hast thou here? | And knowing the voice of the young man the Levite, and lodging with him, they said to him: Who brought thee hither? what dost thou here? why wouldst thou come hither? | When they were near the house of Micah, hearing a voice which was not strange to them, that of the young Levite, they went out of their road to his place, and said to him, How did you come here? and what are you doing in this place? and why are you here? |
Judges 18:4 | And he said to them, Thus and thus has Micah done to me; and he has hired me, and I am his priest. | He answered them: Michas hath done such and such things for me, and hath hired me to be his priest. | And he said to them, This is what Micah did for me, and he gave me payment and I became his priest. |
Judges 18:5 | And they said to him, Inquire, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way on which we go shall be prosperous. | Then they desired him to consult the Lord, that they might know whether their journey should be prosperous, and the thing should have effect. | Then they said, Do get directions from God for us, to see if the journey on which we are going will have a good outcome. |
Judges 18:6 | And the priest said to them, Go in peace: before Jehovah is your way on which ye go. | He answered them: Go in peace, the Lord looketh on your way, and the journey that you go. | And the priest said to them, Go in peace: your way is guided by the Lord. |
Judges 18:7 | And the five men departed, and came to Laish; and they saw the people that were therein, dwelling securely, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and no one was in the land who possessed authority, that might put [them] to shame in anything; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had nothing to do with [any] man. | So the five men going on came to Lais: and they saw how the people dwelt therein without any fear, according to the custom of the Sidonians, secure and easy, having no man at all to oppose them, being very rich, and living separated, at a distance from Sidon and from all men. | Then the five men went on their way and came to Laish and saw the people who were there, living without thought of danger, like the Zidonians, quiet and safe; for they had everything on earth for their needs, and they were far from the Zidonians and had no business with Aram. |
Judges 18:8 | And they came to their brethren at Zoreah and Eshtaol. And their brethren said to them, What [say] ye? | And they returned to their brethren in Saraa and Esthaol, who asked them what they had done? to whom they answered: | So they came back to their brothers in Zorah and Eshtaol, and their brothers said to them, What news have you? |
Judges 18:9 | And they said, Arise, and let us go up against them; for we have seen the land, and behold, it is very good; and ye are still! Be not slothful to go, to enter to take possession of the land. | Arise, and let us go up to them: for we have seen the land which is exceeding rich and fruitful: neglect not, lose no time: let us go and possess it, there will be no difficulty. | And they said, Up! and let us go against Laish; for we have seen the land, and it is very good: why are you doing nothing? Do not be slow to go in and take the land for your heritage. |
Judges 18:10 | When ye go in, ye shall come to a people secure, and the land is spacious in every direction; for God has given it into your hands; [it is] a place where there is no want of anything that is on the earth. | We shall come to a people that is secure, into a spacious country, and the Lord will deliver the place to us, in which there is no want of any thing that groweth on the earth. | When you come there you will come to a people living without thought of danger; and the land is wide, and God has given it into your hands: a place where there is everything on earth for man's needs. |
Judges 18:11 | And there went from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zoreah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men girded with weapons of war. | There went therefore of the kindred of Dan, to wit, from Saraa and Esthaol, six hundred men, furnished with arms for war, | So six hundred men of the Danites from Zorah and Eshtaol went out armed with instruments of war. |
Judges 18:12 | And they went up and encamped in Kirjath-jearim, in Judah; therefore they call that place Mahaneh-Dan to this day: behold, it is behind Kirjath-jearim. | And going up they lodged in Cariathiarim of Juda: which place from that time is called the camp of Dan, and is behind Cariathiarim. | And they went up and put up their tents in Kiriath-jearim in Judah: so that place is named Mahaneh-dan to this day. It is to the west of Kiriath-jearim. |
Judges 18:13 | And they passed thence to mount Ephraim, and came to the house of Micah. | From thence they passed into mount Ephraim. And when they were come to the house of Michas, | From there they went on to the hill-country of Ephraim and came to the house of Micah. |
Judges 18:14 | Then the five men that had gone to spy out the country of Laish spoke and said to their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image? And now ye know what to do. | The five men, that before had been sent to view the land of Lais, said to the rest of their brethren: You know that in these houses there is an ephod, and theraphim, and a graven, and a molten god: see what you are pleased to do. | Then the five men who had gone to make a search through the country of Laish, said to their brothers, Have you knowledge that in these houses there is an ephod and family gods and a pictured image and a metal image? So now you see what to do. |
Judges 18:15 | And they turned thither, and came to the house of the young man the Levite, the house of Micah, and inquired after his welfare. | And when they had turned a little aside, they went into the house of the young man the Levite, who was in the house of Michas: and they saluted him with words of peace. | And turning from their road they came to the house of the young Levite, the house of Micah, and said to him, Is it well with you? |
Judges 18:16 | And the six hundred men of the children of Dan, girded with their weapons of war, stood at the entrance of the gate. | And the six hundred men stood before the door, appointed with their arms. | And the six hundred armed men of the Danites took their places by the doorway. |
Judges 18:17 | And the five men that had gone to spy out the land went up, entered in thither, [and] took the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image; and the priest stood at the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men that were girded with weapons of war. | But they that were gone into the house of the young man, went about to take away the graven god, and the ephod, and the theraphim, and the molten god, and the priest stood before the door, the six hundred valiant men waiting not far off. | Then the five men who had gone to make a search through the land, went in and took the pictured image and the ephod and the family gods and the metal image; and the priest was by the doorway with the six hundred armed men. |
Judges 18:18 | And these came into Micah's house, and took the carved image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image. And the priest said to them, What do ye? | So they that were gone in took away the graven thing, the ephod, and the idols, and the molten god. And the priest said to them: What are you doing? | And when they went into Micah's house and took out the pictured image and the ephod and the family gods and the metal image, the priest said to them, What are you doing? |
Judges 18:19 | And they said to him, Hold thy peace, lay thy hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest. Is it better for thee to be a priest for the house of one man, or to be priest for a tribe and a family in Israel? | And they said to him: Hold thy peace and put thy finger on thy mouth and come with us, that we may have thee for a father, and a priest. Whether is better for thee, to be a priest in the house of one man, or in a tribe and family in Israel? | And they said to him, Be quiet; say nothing, and come with us and be our father and priest; is it better for you to be priest to one man's house or to be priest to a tribe and a family in Israel? |
Judges 18:20 | Then the priest's heart was glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and went in the midst of the people. | When he had heard this, he agreed to their words, and took the ephod, and the idols, and the graven god, and departed with them. | Then the priest's heart was glad, and he took the ephod and the family gods and the pictured image and went with the people. |
Judges 18:21 | And they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the cattle and the baggage before them. | And when they were going forward, and had put before them the children and the cattle and all that was valuable, | So they went on their way again, putting the little ones and the oxen and the goods in front of them. |
Judges 18:22 | They were already far from the house of Micah, when the men that were in the houses near to Micah's house were gathered together, and overtook the children of Dan. | And were now at a distance from the house of Michas, the men that dwelt in the houses of Michas gathering together followed them, | When they had gone some way from the house of Micah, the men from the houses near Micah's house came together and overtook the children of Dan, |
Judges 18:23 | And they cried to the children of Dan. And they turned their faces, and said to Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company? | And began to shout out after them. They looked back, and said to Michas: What aileth thee? Why dost thou cry? | Crying out to them. And the Danites, turning round, said to Micah, What is your trouble, that you have taken up arms? |
Judges 18:24 | And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away; and what have I more? and what is this that ye say to me, What aileth thee? | And he answered: You have taken away my gods which I have made me and the priest, and all that I have, and do you say: What aileth thee? | And he said, You have taken my gods which I made, and my priest, and have gone away; what is there for me now? Why then do you say to me, What is your trouble? |
Judges 18:25 | And the children of Dan said to him, Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest men of exasperated spirit run upon you, and thou lose thy life and the lives of thy household. | And the children of Dan said to him: See thou say no more to us, lest men enraged come upon thee, and thou perish with all thy house. | And the children of Dan said to him, Say no more, or men of bitter spirit may make an attack on you, causing loss of your life and the lives of your people. |
Judges 18:26 | And the children of Dan went their way; and Micah saw that they were too strong for him, and he turned and went back to his house. | And so they went on the journey they had begun. But Michas seeing that they were stronger than he, returned to his house. | Then the children of Dan went on their way; and when Micah saw that they were stronger than he, he went back to his house. |
Judges 18:27 | And they took that which Micah had made, and the priest that he had had, and came upon Laish, upon a people quiet and secure; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and burned the city with fire. | And the six hundred men took the priest, and the things we spoke of before, and came to Lais to a people that was quiet and secure, and smote them with the edge of the sword: and the city was burnt with fire, | And they took that which Micah had made, and his priest, and came to Laish, to a people living quietly and without thought of danger, and they put them to the sword without mercy, burning down their town. |
Judges 18:28 | And there was no deliverer, for it was far from Zidon, and they had nothing to do with [any] man; and it [lay] in the valley that is by Beth-rehob. And they built the city and dwelt therein. | There being no man at all who brought them any succour, because they dwelt far from Sidon, and had no society or business with any man. And the city was in the land of Rohob: and they rebuilt it and dwelt therein. | And they had no saviour, because it was far from Zidon, and they had no business with Aram; and it was in the valley which is the property of Beth-rehob. And building up the town again they took it for their living-place. |
Judges 18:29 | And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israel; howbeit Laish was the name of the city at the first. | Calling the name of the city Dan after the name of their father, who was the son of Israel, which before was called Lais. | And they gave the town the name of Dan, after Dan their father, who was the son of Israel: though the town had been named Laish at first. |
Judges 18:30 | And the children of Dan set up the graven image; and Jehonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Moses; he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land. | And they set up to themselves the graven idol, and Jonathan the son of Gersam the son of Moses, he and his sons were priests in the tribe of Dan, until the day of their captivity. | (And the children of Dan put up the pictured image for themselves; and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Moses, and his sons were priests for the tribe of the Danites till the day when the ark was taken prisoner.) |
Judges 18:31 | And they set up for themselves Micah's graven image, which he had made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh. | And the idol of Michas remained with them all the time that the house of God was in Silo. In those days there was no king in Israel. | And they put up for themselves the image which Micah had made, and it was there all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh. |
