Matthew 6:1 | Take heed not to do your alms before men to be seen of them, otherwise ye have no reward with your Father who is in the heavens. | Take heed that you do not your justice before men, to be seen by them: otherwise you shall not have a reward of your Father who is in heaven. | Take care not to do your good works before men, to be seen by them; or you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. |
Matthew 6:2 | When therefore thou doest alms, sound not a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may have glory from men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. | Therefore when thou dost an almsdeed, sound not a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be honoured by men. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward. | When then you give money to the poor, do not make a noise about it, as the false-hearted men do in the Synagogues and in the streets, so that they may have glory from men. Truly, I say to you, They have their reward. |
Matthew 6:3 | But thou, when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand does; | But when thou dost alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doth. | But when you give money, let not your left hand see what your right hand does: |
Matthew 6:4 | so that thine alms may be in secret, and thy Father who sees in secret will render [it] to thee. | That thy alms may be in secret, and thy Father who seeth in secret will repay thee. | So that your giving may be in secret; and your Father, who sees in secret, will give you your reward. |
Matthew 6:5 | And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites; for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets so that they should appear to men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. | And when ye pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, that love to stand and pray in the synagogues and corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men: Amen I say to you, they have received their reward. | And when you make your prayers, be not like the false-hearted men, who take pleasure in getting up and saying their prayers in the Synagogues and at the street turnings so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, They have their reward. |
Matthew 6:6 | But *thou*, when thou prayest, enter into thy chamber, and having shut thy door, pray to thy Father who is in secret, and thy Father who sees in secret will render [it] to thee. | But thou when thou shalt pray, enter into thy chamber, and having shut the door, pray to thy Father in secret: and thy Father who seeth in secret will repay thee. | But when you make your prayer, go into your private room, and, shutting the door, say a prayer to your Father in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret, will give you your reward. |
Matthew 6:7 | But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as those who are of the nations: for they think they shall be heard through their much speaking. | And when you are praying, speak not much, as the heathens. For they think that in their much speaking they may be heard. | And in your prayer do not make use of the same words again and again, as the Gentiles do: for they have the idea that God will give attention to them because of the number of their words. |
Matthew 6:8 | Be not ye therefore like them, for your Father knows of what things ye have need before ye beg [anything] of him. | Be not you therefore like to them, for your Father knoweth what is needful for you, before you ask him. | So be not like them; because your Father has knowledge of your needs even before you make your requests to him. |
Matthew 6:9 | Thus therefore pray *ye*: Our Father who art in the heavens, let thy name be sanctified, | Thus therefore shall you pray: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. | Let this then be your prayer: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. |
Matthew 6:10 | let thy kingdom come, let thy will be done as in heaven so upon the earth; | Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. | Let your kingdom come. Let your pleasure be done, as in heaven, so on earth. |
Matthew 6:11 | give us to-day our needed bread, | Give us this day our supersubstantial bread. | Give us this day bread for our needs. |
Matthew 6:12 | and forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors, | And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. | And make us free of our debts, as we have made those free who are in debt to us. |
Matthew 6:13 | and lead us not into temptation, but save us from evil. | And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. Amen. | And let us not be put to the test, but keep us safe from the Evil One. |
Matthew 6:14 | For if ye forgive men their offences, your heavenly Father also will forgive you [yours], | For if you will forgive men their offences, your heavenly Father will forgive you also your offences. | For if you let men have forgiveness for their sins, you will have forgiveness from your Father in heaven. |
Matthew 6:15 | but if ye do not forgive men their offences, neither will your Father forgive your offences. | But if you will not forgive men, neither will your Father forgive you your offences. | But if you do not let men have forgiveness for their sins, you will not have forgiveness from your Father for your sins. |
Matthew 6:16 | And when ye fast, be not as the hypocrites, downcast in countenance; for they disfigure their faces, so that they may appear fasting to men: verily I say unto you, They have their reward. | And when you fast, be not as the hypocrites, sad. For they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward. | And when you go without food, be not sad-faced as the false-hearted are. For they go about with changed looks, so that men may see that they are going without food. Truly I say to you, They have their reward. |
Matthew 6:17 | But *thou*, [when] fasting, anoint thy head and wash thy face, | But thou, when thou fastest anoint thy head, and wash thy face; | But when you go without food, put oil on your head and make your face clean; |
Matthew 6:18 | so that thou mayest not appear fasting unto men, but to thy Father who is in secret; and thy Father who sees in secret shall render [it] to thee. | That thou appear not to men to fast, but to thy Father who is in secret: and thy Father who seeth in secret, will repay thee. | So that no one may see that you are going without food, but your Father in secret; and your Father, who sees in secret, will give you your reward. |
Matthew 6:19 | Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust spoils, and where thieves dig through and steal; | Lay not up to yourselves treasures on earth: where the rust, and moth consume, and where thieves break through and steal. | Make no store of wealth for yourselves on earth, where it may be turned to dust by worms and weather, and where thieves may come in by force and take it away. |
Matthew 6:20 | but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust spoils, and where thieves do not dig through nor steal; | But lay up to yourselves treasures in heaven: where neither the rust nor moth doth consume, and where thieves do not break through, nor steal. | But make a store for yourselves in heaven, where it will not be turned to dust and where thieves do not come in to take it away: |
Matthew 6:21 | for where thy treasure is, there will be also thy heart. | For where thy treasure is, there is thy heart also. | For where your wealth is, there will your heart be. |
Matthew 6:22 | The lamp of the body is the eye; if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body will be light: | The light of thy body is thy eye. If thy eye be single, thy whole body shall be lightsome. | The light of the body is the eye; if then your eye is true, all your body will be full of light. |
Matthew 6:23 | but if thine eye be wicked, thy whole body will be dark. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great the darkness! | But if thy eye be evil thy whole body shall be darksome. If then the light that is in thee, be darkness: the darkness itself how great shall it be! | But if your eye is evil, all your body will be dark. If then the light which is in you is dark, how dark it will be! |
Matthew 6:24 | No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and will love the other, or he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. | No man can serve two masters. For either he will hate the one, and love the other: or he will sustain the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. | No man is able to be a servant to two masters: for he will have hate for the one and love for the other, or he will keep to one and have no respect for the other. You may not be servants of God and of wealth. |
Matthew 6:25 | For this cause I say unto you, Do not be careful about your life, what ye should eat and what ye should drink; nor for your body what ye should put on. Is not the life more than food, and the body than raiment? | Therefore I say to you, be not solicitous for your life, what you shall eat, nor for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the life more than the meat: and the body more than the raiment? | So I say to you, Take no thought for your life, about food or drink, or about clothing for your body. Is not life more than food, and the body more than its clothing? |
Matthew 6:26 | Look at the birds of the heaven, that they sow not, nor reap, nor gather into granaries, and your heavenly Father nourishes them. Are *ye* not much more excellent than they? | Behold the birds of the air, for they neither sow, nor do they reap, nor gather into barns: and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not you of much more value than they? | See the birds of heaven; they do not put seeds in the earth, they do not get in grain, or put it in store-houses; and your Father in heaven gives them food. Are you not of much more value than they? |
Matthew 6:27 | But which of you by carefulness can add to his growth one cubit? | And which of you by taking thought, can add to his stature by one cubit? | And which of you by taking thought is able to make himself a cubit taller? |
Matthew 6:28 | And why are ye careful about clothing? Observe with attention the lilies of the field, how they grow: they toil not, neither do they spin; | And for raiment why are you solicitous? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they labour not, neither do they spin. | And why are you troubled about clothing? See the flowers of the field, how they come up; they do no work, they make no thread: |
Matthew 6:29 | but I say unto you, that not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed as one of these. | But I say to you, that not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed as one of these. | But I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. |
Matthew 6:30 | But if God so clothe the herbage of the field, which is to-day, and to-morrow is cast into [the] oven, will he not much rather you, O [ye] of little faith? | And if the grass of the field, which is to day, and to morrow is cast into the oven, God doth so clothe: how much more you, O ye of little faith? | But if God gives such clothing to the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is put into the oven, will he not much more give you clothing, O you of little faith? |
Matthew 6:31 | Be not therefore careful, saying, What shall we eat? or What shall we drink? or What shall we put on? | Be not solicitous therefore, saying, What shall we eat: or what shall we drink, or wherewith shall we be clothed? | Then do not be full of care, saying, What are we to have for food or drink? or, With what may we be clothed? |
Matthew 6:32 | for all these things the nations seek after; for your heavenly Father knows that ye have need of all these things. | For after all these things do the heathens seek. For your Father knoweth that you have need of all these things. | Because the Gentiles go in search of all these things: for your Father in heaven has knowledge that you have need of all these things: |
Matthew 6:33 | But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. | Seek ye therefore first the kingdom of God, and his justice, and all these things shall be added unto you. | But let your first care be for his kingdom and his righteousness; and all these other things will be given to you in addition. |
Matthew 6:34 | Be not careful therefore for the morrow, for the morrow shall be careful about itself. Sufficient to the day [is] its own evil. | Be not therefore solicitous for to morrow; for the morrow will be solicitous for itself. Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof. | Then have no care for tomorrow: tomorrow will take care of itself. Take the trouble of the day as it comes. |
