Titus 1:1Paul, bondman of God, and apostle of Jesus Christ according to [the] faith of God's elect, and knowledge of [the] truth which [is] according to piety;Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of the elect of God and the acknowledging of the truth, which is according to godliness:Paul, a servant of God, and an Apostle of Jesus Christ, in agreement with the faith of the saints of God and the full knowledge of what is true in harmony with religion,
Titus 1:2in [the] hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before the ages of time,Unto the hope of life everlasting, which God, who lieth not, hath promised before the times of the world:In the hope of eternal life, which was made certain before eternal time, by the word of God who is ever true;
Titus 1:3but has manifested in its own due season his word, in [the] proclamation with which *I* have been entrusted, according to [the] commandment of our Saviour God;But hath in due times manifested his word in preaching, which is committed to me according to the commandment of God our Savior:Who, in his time, made clear his word in the good news, of which, by the order of God our Saviour, I became a preacher;
Titus 1:4to Titus, my own child according to [the] faith common [to us]: Grace and peace from God [the] Father, and Christ Jesus our Saviour.To Titus my beloved son, according to the common faith, grace and peace from God the Father, and from Christ Jesus our Savior.To Titus, my true child in our common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Saviour.
Titus 1:5For this cause I left thee in Crete, that thou mightest go on to set right what remained [unordered], and establish elders in each city, as *I* had ordered thee:For this cause I left thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and shouldest ordain priests in every city, as I also appointed thee:I did not take you with me when I went away from Crete, so that you might do what was necessary to put things in order there, placing men in authority over the churches in every town, as I said to you;
Titus 1:6if any one be free from all charge [against him], husband of one wife, having believing children not accused of excess or unruly.If any be without crime, the husband of one wife, having faithful children, not accused of riot, or unruly.Men having a good record, husbands of one wife, whose children are of the faith, children of whom it may not be said that they are given to loose living or are uncontrolled.
Titus 1:7For the overseer must be free from all charge [against him] as God's steward; not headstrong, not passionate, not disorderly through wine, not a striker, not seeking gain by base means;For a bishop must be without crime, as the steward of God: not proud, not subject to anger, not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre:For it is necessary for a Bishop to be a man of virtue, as God's servant; not pushing himself forward, not quickly moved to wrath or blows, not desiring profit for himself;
Titus 1:8but hospitable, a lover of goodness, discreet, just, pious, temperate,But given to hospitality, gentle, sober, just, holy, continent:But opening his house freely to guests; a lover of what is good, serious-minded, upright, holy, self-controlled;
Titus 1:9clinging to the faithful word according to the doctrine taught, that he may be able both to encourage with sound teaching and refute gainsayers.Embracing that faithful word which is according to doctrine, that he may be able to exhort in sound doctrine, and to convince the gainsayers.Keeping to the true word of the teaching, so that he may be able to give comfort by right teaching and overcome the arguments of the doubters.
Titus 1:10For there are many and disorderly vain speakers and deceivers of people's minds, specially those of [the] circumcision,For there are also many disobedient, vain talkers, and seducers: especially they who are of the circumcision:For there are men who are not ruled by law; foolish talkers, false teachers, specially those of the circumcision,
Titus 1:11who must have their mouths stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which ought not [to be taught] for the sake of base gain.Who must be reproved, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.By whom some families have been completely overturned; who take money for teaching things which are not right; these will have to be stopped.
Titus 1:12One of themselves, a prophet of their own, has said, Cretans are always liars, evil wild beasts, lazy gluttons.One of them a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are always liars, evil beasts, slothful bellies.One of their prophets has said, The men of Crete are ever false, evil beasts, lovers of food, hating work.
Titus 1:13This testimony is true; for which cause rebuke them severely, that they may be sound in the faith,This testimony is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;This witness is true. So say sharp words to them so that they may come to the right faith,
Titus 1:14not turning [their] minds to Jewish fables and commandments of men turning away from the truth.Not giving heed to Jewish fables and commandments of men, who turn themselves away from the truth.Giving no attention to the fictions of the Jews and the rules of men who have no true knowledge.
Titus 1:15All things [are] pure to the pure; but to the defiled and unbelieving nothing [is] pure; but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.All things are clean to the clean: but to them that are defiled, and to unbelievers, nothing is clean: but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.To the clean in heart all things are clean: but to those who are unclean and without faith nothing is clean; they become unclean in mind and in thought.
Titus 1:16They profess to know God, but in works deny [him], being abominable, and disobedient, and found worthless as to every good work.They profess that they know God: but in their works they deny him; being abominable, and incredulous, and to every good work reprobate.They say that they have knowledge of God, while by their acts they are turning their backs on him; they are hated by all, hard-hearted, and judged to be without value for any good work.
