Romans 9:1 | I say [the] truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience bearing witness with me in [the] Holy Spirit, | And not only she. But when Rebecca also had conceived at once, of Isaac our father. | I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me testimony in the Holy Spirit, |
Romans 9:2 | that I have great grief and uninterrupted pain in my heart, | For when the children were not yet born, nor had done any good or evil (that the purpose of God, according to election, might stand,) | That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. |
Romans 9:3 | for I have wished, I myself, to be a curse from the Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen, according to flesh; | Not of works, but of him that calleth, it was said to her: The elder shall serve the younger. | For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ, for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh: |
Romans 9:4 | who are Israelites; whose [is] the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the law-giving, and the service, and the promises; | As it is written: Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated. | Who are Israelites; to whom pertain the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises; |
Romans 9:5 | whose [are] the fathers; and of whom, as according to flesh, [is] the Christ, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen. | What shall we say then? Is there injustice with God? God forbid. | Whose are the fathers, and from whom according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen. |
Romans 9:6 | Not however as though the word of God had failed; for not all [are] Israel which [are] of Israel; | For he saith to Moses: I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy; and I will shew mercy to whom I will shew mercy. | Not as though the word of God hath taken no effect. For they are not all Israel, who are descendants from Israel? |
Romans 9:7 | nor because they are seed of Abraham [are] all children: but, In Isaac shall a seed be called to thee. | So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy. | Neither because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. |
Romans 9:8 | That is, [they that are] the children of the flesh, these [are] not the children of God; but the children of the promise are reckoned as seed. | For the scripture saith to Pharao: To this purpose have I raised thee, that I may shew my power in thee, and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth. | That is, They who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted for the seed. |
Romans 9:9 | For this word [is] of promise, According to this time I will come, and there shall be a son to Sarah. | Therefore he hath mercy on whom he will; and whom he will, he hardeneth. | For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sarah shall have a son. |
Romans 9:10 | And not only [that], but Rebecca having conceived by one, Isaac our father, | Thou wilt say therefore to me: Why doth he then find fault? for who resisteth his will? | And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac, |
Romans 9:11 | [the children] indeed being not yet born, or having done anything good or worthless (that the purpose of God according to election might abide, not of works, but of him that calls), | O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it: Why hast thou made me thus? | (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God, according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth) |
Romans 9:12 | it was said to her, The greater shall serve the less: | Or hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump, to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? | It was said to her, The elder shall serve the younger. |
Romans 9:13 | according as it is written, I have loved Jacob, and I have hated Esau. | What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath, fitted for destruction, | As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated. |
Romans 9:14 | What shall we say then? [Is there] unrighteousness with God? Far be the thought. | That he might shew the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he hath prepared unto glory? | What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? By no means. |
Romans 9:15 | For he says to Moses, I will shew mercy to whom I will shew mercy, and I will feel compassion for whom I will feel compassion. | Even us, whom also he hath called, nor only of the Jews, but also of the Gentiles. | For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. |
Romans 9:16 | So then [it is] not of him that wills, nor of him that runs, but of God that shews mercy. | As in Osee he saith: I will call that which was not my people, my people; and her that was not beloved, beloved; and her that had not obtained mercy, one that hath obtained mercy. | So then, it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that showeth mercy. |
Romans 9:17 | For the scripture says to Pharaoh, For this very thing I have raised thee up from amongst [men], that I might thus shew in thee my power, and so that my name should be declared in all the earth. | And it shall be, in the place where it was said unto them, You are not my people; there they shall be called the sons of the living God. | For the scripture saith to Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might show my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. |
Romans 9:18 | So then, to whom he will he shews mercy, and whom he will he hardens. | And Isaias crieth out concerning Israel: If the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved. | Therefore he hath mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. |
Romans 9:19 | Thou wilt say to me then, Why does he yet find fault? for who resists his purpose? | For he shall finish his word, and cut it short in justice; because a short word shall the Lord make upon the earth. | Thou wilt say then to me, Why doth he yet find fault? for who hath resisted his will? |
Romans 9:20 | Aye, but thou, O man, who art *thou* that answerest again to God? Shall the thing formed say to him that has formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? | And as Isaias foretold: Unless the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been made as Sodom, and we had been like unto Gomorrha. | No, but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? |
Romans 9:21 | Or has not the potter authority over the clay, out of the same lump to make one vessel to honour, and another to dishonour? | What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who followed not after justice, have attained to justice, even the justice that is of faith. | Hath not the potter power over the clay of the same lump to make one vessel to honor, and another to dishonor? |
Romans 9:22 | And if God, minded to shew his wrath and to make his power known, endured with much long-suffering vessels of wrath fitted for destruction; | But Israel, by following after the law of justice, is not come unto the law of justice. | What if God, willing to show his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much long-suffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: |
Romans 9:23 | and that he might make known the riches of his glory upon vessels of mercy, which he had before prepared for glory, | Why so? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were of works. For they stumbled at the stumblingstone. | And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had before prepared for glory, |
Romans 9:24 | us, whom he has also called, not only from amongst [the] Jews, but also from amongst [the] nations? | As it is written: Behold I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and a rock of scandal; and whosoever believeth in him shall not be confounded. | Even us whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles. |
Romans 9:25 | As he says also in Hosea, I will call not-my-people My people; and the-not-beloved Beloved. | | As he saith also in Hosea, I will call them My people, who were not my people; and her Beloved, who was not beloved. |
Romans 9:26 | And it shall be, in the place where it was said to them, *Ye* [are] not my people, there shall they be called Sons of [the] living God. | | And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said to them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called, The children of the living God. |
Romans 9:27 | But Esaias cries concerning Israel, Should the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, the remnant shall be saved: | | Isaiah also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved: |
Romans 9:28 | for [he] is bringing the matter to an end, and [cutting [it] short in righteousness; because] a cutting short of the matter will [the] Lord accomplish upon the earth. | | For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth. |
Romans 9:29 | And according as Esaias said before, Unless [the] Lord of hosts had left us a seed, we had been as Sodom, and made like even as Gomorrha. | | And as Isaiah said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodom, and been made like Gomorrah. |
Romans 9:30 | What then shall we say? That [they of the] nations, who did not follow after righteousness, have attained righteousness, but [the] righteousness that is on the principle of faith. | | What shall we say then? That the Gentiles who followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is by faith: |
Romans 9:31 | But Israel, pursuing after a law of righteousness, has not attained to [that] law. | | But Israel, who followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. |
Romans 9:32 | Wherefore? Because [it was] not on the principle of faith, but as of works. They have stumbled at the stumblingstone, | | Why? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling-stone; |
Romans 9:33 | according as it is written, Behold, I place in Zion a stone of stumbling and rock of offence: and he that believes on him shall not be ashamed. | | As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumbling-stone, and rock of offense: and whoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. |
