John 11:1 | Now there was a certain [man] sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister. | Now there was a certain man sick, named Lazarus, of Bethania, of the town of Mary and Martha her sister. | Now a certain man, named Lazarus, of Bethany, was lying ill Bethany being the village of Mary and her sister Martha. |
John 11:2 | It was [the] Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. | (And Mary was she that anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair: whose brother Lazarus was sick.) | (It was the Mary who poured the perfume over the Lord and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill.) |
John 11:3 | The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. | His sisters therefore sent to him, saying: Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. | So the sisters sent to Him to say, "Master, he whom you hold dear is ill." |
John 11:4 | But when Jesus heard [it], he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified by it. | And Jesus hearing it, said to them: This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God: that the Son of God may be glorified by it. | Jesus received the message and said, "This illness is not to end in death, but is to promote the glory of God, in order that the Son of God may be glorified by it." |
John 11:5 | Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. | Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister Mary, and Lazarus. | Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. |
John 11:6 | When therefore he heard, He is sick, he remained two days then in the place where he was. | When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he still remained in the same place two days. | When, however, He heard that Lazarus was ill, He still remained two days in that same place. |
John 11:7 | Then after this he says to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. | Then after that, he said to his disciples: Let us go into Judea again. | Then, after that, He said to the disciples, "Let us return to Judaea." |
John 11:8 | The disciples say to him, Rabbi, [even but] now the Jews sought to stone thee, and goest thou thither again? | The disciples say to him: Rabbi, the Jews but now sought to stone thee: and goest thou thither again? | "Rabbi," exclaimed the disciples, "the Jews have just been trying to stone you, and do you think of going back there again?" |
John 11:9 | Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any one walk in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world; | Jesus answered: Are there not twelve hours of the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world: | "Are there not twelve hours in the day?" replied Jesus. "If any one walks in the daytime, he does not stumble because he sees the light of this world. |
John 11:10 | but if any one walk in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him. | But if he walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him. | But if a man walks by night, he does stumble, because the light is not in him." |
John 11:11 | These things said he; and after this he says to them, Lazarus, our friend, is fallen asleep, but I go that I may awake him out of sleep. | These things he said; and after that he said to them: Lazarus our friend sleepeth; but I go that I may awake him out of sleep. | He said this, and afterwards He added, "Our friend Lazarus is sleeping, but I will go and wake him." |
John 11:12 | The disciples therefore said to him, Lord, if he be fallen asleep, he will get well. | His disciples therefore said: Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. | "Master," said the disciples, "if he is asleep he will recover." |
John 11:13 | But Jesus spoke of his death, but *they* thought that he spoke of the rest of sleep. | But Jesus spoke of his death; and they thought that he spoke of the repose of sleep. | Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought He referred to the rest taken in ordinary sleep. |
John 11:14 | Jesus therefore then said to them plainly, Lazarus has died. | Then therefore Jesus said to them plainly: Lazarus is dead. | So then He told them plainly, |
John 11:15 | And I rejoice on your account that I was not there, in order that ye may believe. But let us go to him. | And I am glad, for your sakes, that I was not there, that you may believe: but let us go to him. | "Lazarus is dead; and for your sakes I am glad I was not there, in order that you may believe. But let us go to him." |
John 11:16 | Thomas therefore, called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, Let *us* also go, that we may die with him. | Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples: Let us also go, that we may die with him. | "Let us go also," Thomas, the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, "that we may die with him." |
John 11:17 | Jesus therefore [on] arriving found him to have been four days already in the tomb. | Jesus therefore came, and found that he had been four days already in the grave. | On His arrival Jesus found that Lazarus had already been three days in the tomb. |
John 11:18 | Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia off, | (Now Bethania was near Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off.) | Bethany was near Jerusalem, the distance being a little less than two miles; |
John 11:19 | and many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, that they might console them concerning their brother. | And many of the Jews were come to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. | and a considerable number of the Jews were with Martha and Mary, having come to express sympathy with them on the death of their brother. |
John 11:20 | Martha then, when she heard Jesus is coming, went to meet him; but Mary sat in the house. | Martha therefore, as soon as she heard that Jesus had come, went to meet him: but Mary sat at home. | Martha, however, as soon as she heard the tidings, "Jesus is coming," went to meet Him; but Mary remained sitting in the house. |
John 11:21 | Martha therefore said to Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died; | Martha therefore said to Jesus: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. | So Martha came and spoke to Jesus. "Master, if you had been here," she said, "my brother would not have died. |
John 11:22 | but even now I know, that whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee. | But now also I know that whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. | And even now I know that whatever you ask God for, God will give you." |
John 11:23 | Jesus says to her, Thy brother shall rise again. | Jesus saith to her: Thy brother shall rise again. | "Your brother shall rise again," replied Jesus. |
John 11:24 | Martha says to him, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection in the last day. | Martha saith to him: I know that he shall rise again, in the resurrection at the last day. | "I know," said Martha, "that he will rise again at the resurrection, on the last day." |
John 11:25 | Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that believes on me, though he have died, shall live; | Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, although he be dead, shall live: | "I am the Resurrection and the Life," said Jesus; "he who believes in me, even if he has died, he shall live; |
John 11:26 | and every one who lives and believes on me shall never die. Believest thou this? | And every one that liveth, and believeth in me, shall not die for ever. Believest thou this? | and every one who is living and is a believer in me shall never, never die. Do you believe this?" |
John 11:27 | She says to him, Yea, Lord; I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who should come into the world. | She saith to him: Yea, Lord, I have believed that thou art Christ the Son of the living God, who art come into this world. | "Yes, Master," she replied; "I thoroughly believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world." |
John 11:28 | And having said this, she went away and called her sister Mary secretly, saying, The teacher is come and calls thee. | And when she had said these things, she went, and called her sister Mary secretly, saying: The master is come, and calleth for thee. | After saying this, she went and called her sister Mary privately, telling her, "The Rabbi is here and is asking for you." |
John 11:29 | She, when she heard [that], rises up quickly and comes to him. | She, as soon as she heard this, riseth quickly, and cometh to him. | So she, on hearing that, rose up quickly to go to Him. |
John 11:30 | Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha came to meet him. | For Jesus was not yet come into the town: but he was still in that place where Martha had met him. | Now Jesus was not yet come into the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met Him. |
John 11:31 | The Jews therefore who were with her in the house and consoling her, seeing Mary that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, She goes to the tomb, that she may weep there. | The Jews therefore, who were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary that she rose up speedily and went out, followed her, saying: She goeth to the grave to weep there. | So the Jews who were with Mary in the house sympathizing with her, when they saw that she had risen hastily and had gone out, followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep aloud there. |
John 11:32 | Mary therefore, when she came where Jesus was, seeing him, fell at his feet, saying to him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. | When Mary therefore was come where Jesus was, seeing him, she fell down at his feet, and saith to him: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. | Mary then, when she came to Jesus and saw Him, fell at His feet and exclaimed, "Master, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." |
John 11:33 | Jesus therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, was deeply moved in spirit, and was troubled, | Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews that were come with her, weeping, groaned in the spirit, and troubled himself, | Seeing her weeping aloud, and the Jews in like manner weeping who had come with her, Jesus, curbing the strong emotion of His spirit, |
John 11:34 | and said, Where have ye put him? They say to him, Lord, come and see. | And said: Where have you laid him? They say to him: Lord, come and see. | though deeply troubled, asked them, "Where have you laid him?" "Master, come and see," was their reply. |
John 11:35 | Jesus wept. | And Jesus wept. | Jesus wept. |
John 11:36 | The Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him! | The Jews therefore said: Behold how he loved him. | "See how dear he held him," said the Jews. |
John 11:37 | And some of them said, Could not this [man], who has opened the eyes of the blind [man], have caused that this [man] also should not have died? | But some of them said: Could not he that opened the eyes of the man born blind, have caused that this man should not die? | But others of them asked, "Was this man who opened the blind man's eyes unable to prevent this man from dying?" |
John 11:38 | Jesus therefore, again deeply moved in himself, comes to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. | Jesus therefore again groaning in himself, cometh to the sepulchre. Now it was a cave; and a stone was laid over it. | Jesus, however, again restraining His strong feeling, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone had been laid against the mouth of it. |
John 11:39 | Jesus says, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead, says to him, Lord, he stinks already, for he is four days [there]. | Jesus saith: Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith to him: Lord, by this time he stinketh, for he is now of four days. | "Take away the stone," said Jesus. Martha, the sister of the dead man, exclaimed, "Master, by this time there is a foul smell; for it is three days since he died." |
John 11:40 | Jesus says to her, Did I not say to thee, that if thou shouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? | Jesus saith to her: Did not I say to thee, that if thou believe, thou shalt see the glory of God? | "Did I not promise you," replied Jesus, "that if you believe, you shall see the glory of God?" |
John 11:41 | They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifted up his eyes on high and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me; | They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifting up his eyes said: Father, I give thee thanks that thou hast heard me. | So they removed the stone. Then Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, "Father, I thank Thee that Thou hast heard me. |
John 11:42 | but I knew that thou always hearest me; but on account of the crowd who stand around I have said [it], that they may believe that thou hast sent me. | And I knew that thou hearest me always; but because of the people who stand about have I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. | I know that Thou always hearest me; but for the sake of the crowd standing round I have said this that they may believe that Thou didst send me." |
John 11:43 | And having said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. | When he had said these things, he cried with a loud voice: Lazarus, come forth. | After speaking thus, He called out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out." |
John 11:44 | And the dead came forth, bound feet and hands with graveclothes, and his face was bound round with a handkerchief. Jesus says to them, Loose him and let him go. | And presently he that had been dead came forth, bound feet and hands with winding bands; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said to them: Loose him, and let him go. | The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped in cloths, and his face wrapped round with a towel. "Untie him," said Jesus, "and let him go free." |
John 11:45 | Many therefore of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what he had done, believed on him; | Many therefore of the Jews, who were come to Mary and Martha, and had seen the things that Jesus did, believed in him. | Thereupon a considerable number of the Jews namely those who had come to Mary and had witnessed His deeds became believers in Him; |
John 11:46 | but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. | But some of them went to the Pharisees, and told them the things that Jesus had done. | though some of them went off to the Pharisees and told them what He had done. |
John 11:47 | The chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What do we? for this man does many signs. | The chief priests therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered a council, and said: What do we, for this man doth many miracles? | Therefore the High Priests and the Pharisees held a meeting of the Sanhedrin. "What steps are we taking?" they asked one another; "for this man is performing a great number of miracles. |
John 11:48 | If we let him thus alone, all will believe on him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation. | If we let him alone so, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and take away our place and nation. | If we leave him alone in this way, everybody will believe in him, and the Romans will come and blot out both our city and our nation." |
John 11:49 | But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, Ye know nothing | But one of them, named Caiphas, being the high priest that year, said to them: You know nothing. | But one of them, named Caiaphas, being High Priest that year, said, "You know nothing about it. |
John 11:50 | nor consider that it is profitable for you that one man die for the people, and not that the whole nation perish. | Neither do you consider that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. | You do not reflect that it is to your interest that one man should die for the people rather than the whole nation perish." |
John 11:51 | But this he did not say of himself; but, being high priest that year, prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation; | And this he spoke not of himself: but being the high priest of that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation. | It was not as a mere man that he thus spoke. But being High Priest that year he was inspired to declare that Jesus was to die for the nation, |
John 11:52 | and not for the nation only, but that he should also gather together into one the children of God who were scattered abroad. | And not only for the nation, but to gather together in one the children of God, that were dispersed. | and not for the nation only, but in order to unite into one body all the far-scattered children of God. |
John 11:53 | From that day therefore they took counsel that they might kill him. | From that day therefore they devised to put him to death. | So from that day forward they planned and schemed in order to put Him to death. |
John 11:54 | Jesus therefore walked no longer openly among the Jews, but went away thence into the country near the desert, to a city called Ephraim, and there he sojourned with the disciples. | Wherefore Jesus walked no more openly among the Jews; but he went into a country near the desert, unto a city that is called Ephrem, and there he abode with his disciples. | Therefore Jesus no longer went about openly among the Jews, but He left that neighbourhood and went into the district near the Desert, to a town called Ephraim, and remained there with the disciples. |
John 11:55 | But the passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves. | And the pasch of the Jews was at hand; and many from the country went up to Jerusalem, before the pasch to purify themselves. | The Jewish Passover was coming near, and many from that district went up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves. |
John 11:56 | They sought therefore Jesus, and said among themselves, standing in the temple, What do ye think? that he will not come to the feast? | They sought therefore for Jesus; and they discoursed one with another, standing in the temple: What think you that he is not come to the festival day? And the chief priests and Pharisees had given a commandment, that if any man knew where he was, he should tell, that they might apprehend him. | They therefore looked out for Jesus, and asked one another as they stood in the Temple, "What do you think? will he come to the Festival at all?" |
John 11:57 | Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandment that if any one knew where he was, he should make it known, that they might take him. | | Now the High Priests and the Pharisees had issued orders that if any one knew where He was, he should give information, so that they might arrest Him. |
