John 18:1Jesus, having said these things, went out with his disciples beyond the torrent Cedron, where was a garden, into which he entered, he and his disciples. When Jesus had said these things, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where there was a garden, into which he entered with his disciples. After offering this prayer Jesus went out with His disciples to a place on the further side of the Ravine of the Cedars, where there was a garden which He entered Himself and His disciples.
John 18:2And Judas also, who delivered him up, knew the place, because Jesus was often there, in company with his disciples. And Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place; because Jesus had often resorted thither together with his disciples. Now Judas also, who at that very time was betraying Him, knew the place, for Jesus had often resorted there with His disciples.
John 18:3Judas therefore, having got the band, and officers of the chief priests and Pharisees, comes there with lanterns and torches and weapons.Judas therefore having received a band of soldiers and servants from the chief priests and the Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. So Judas, followed by the battalion and by a detachment of the Temple police sent by the High Priests and Pharisees, came there with torches and lamps and weapons.
John 18:4Jesus therefore, knowing all things that were coming upon him, went forth and said to them, Whom seek ye?Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said to them: Whom seek ye?Jesus therefore, knowing all that was about to befall Him, went out to meet them. "Who are you looking for?" He asked them.
John 18:5They answered him, Jesus the Nazaraean. Jesus says to them, I am [he]. And Judas also, who delivered him up, stood with them. They answered him: Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith to them: I am he. And Judas also, who betrayed him, stood with them."For Jesus the Nazarene," was the answer. "I am he," He replied. (Now Judas who was betraying Him was also standing with them.)
John 18:6When therefore he said to them, I am [he], they went away backward and fell to the ground. As soon therefore as he had said to them: I am he; they went backward, and fell to the ground. As soon then as He said to them, "I am he," they went backwards and fell to the ground.
John 18:7He demanded of them therefore again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus the Nazaraean.Again therefore he asked them: Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.Again therefore He asked them, "Who are you looking for?" "For Jesus the Nazarene," they said.
John 18:8Jesus answered, I told you that I am [he]: if therefore ye seek me, let these go away;Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way."I have told you," replied Jesus, "that I am he. If therefore you are looking for me, let these my disciples go their way."
John 18:9that the word might be fulfilled which he spoke, [As to] those whom thou hast given me, I have not lost one of them. That the word might be fulfilled which he said: Of them whom thou hast given me, I have not lost any one.He made this request in order that the words He had spoken might be fulfilled, "As for those whom Thou hast given me, I have not lost one."
John 18:10Simon Peter therefore, having a sword, drew it, and smote the bondman of the high priest and cut off his right ear; and the bondman's name was Malchus. Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it, and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. And the name of the servant was Malchus.Simon Peter, however, having a sword, drew it, and, aiming at the High Priest's servant, cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
John 18:11Jesus therefore said to Peter, Put the sword into the sheath; the cup which the Father has given me, shall I not drink it?Jesus therefore said to Peter: Put up thy sword into the scabbard. The chalice which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?Jesus therefore said to Peter, "Put back your sword. Shall I refuse to drink the cup of sorrow which the Father has given me to drink?"
John 18:12The band therefore, and the chiliarch, and the officers of the Jews, took Jesus and bound him:Then the band and the tribune, and the servants of the Jews, took Jesus, and bound him:So the battalion and their tribune and the Jewish police closed in, and took Jesus and bound Him.
John 18:13and they led him away to Annas first; for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. And they led him away to Annas first, for he was father in law to Caiphas, who was the high priest of that year. They then brought Him to Annas first; for Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was High Priest that year.
John 18:14But it was Caiaphas who counselled the Jews that it was better that one man should perish for the people. Now Caiphas was he who had given the counsel to the Jews: That it was expedient that one man should die for the people.(It was this Caiaphas who had advised the Jews, saying, "It is to your interest that one man should die for the People.")
John 18:15Now Simon Peter followed Jesus, and the other disciple. But that disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest; And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. And that disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the court of the high priest.Meanwhile Simon Peter was following Jesus, and so also was another disciple. The latter was known to the High Priest, and went in with Jesus into the court of the High Priest's palace.
John 18:16but Peter stood at the door without. The other disciple therefore, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the porteress and brought in Peter. But Peter stood at the door without. The other disciple therefore, who was known to the high priest, went out, and spoke to the portress, and brought in Peter. But Peter remained standing outside the door, till the disciple who was acquainted with the High Priest came out and induced the portress to let Peter in.
John 18:17The maid therefore, who was porteress, says to Peter, Art thou also of the disciples of this man? He says, I am not.The maid therefore that was portress, saith to Peter: Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith: I am not. This led the girl, the portress, to ask Peter, "Are you also one of this man's disciples?" "No, I am not," he replied.
John 18:18But the bondmen and officers, having made a fire of coals (for it was cold), stood and warmed themselves; and Peter was standing with them and warming himself. Now the servants and ministers stood at a fire of coals, because it was cold, and warmed themselves. And with them was Peter also, standing, and warming himself. Now because it was cold the servants and the police had lighted a charcoal fire, and were standing and warming themselves; and Peter too remained with them, standing and warming himself.
John 18:19The high priest therefore demanded of Jesus concerning his disciples and concerning his doctrine. The high priest therefore asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine. So the High Priest questioned Jesus about His disciples and His teaching.
John 18:20Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world; I taught always in [the] synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews come together, and in secret I have spoken nothing.Jesus answered him: I have spoken openly to the world: I have always taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither all the Jews resort; and in secret I have spoken nothing."As for me," replied Jesus, "I have spoken openly to the world. I have continually taught in some synagogue or in the Temple where all the Jews are wont to assemble, and I have said nothing in secret.
John 18:21Why demandest thou of me? Demand of those who have heard, what I have spoken to them; behold, they know what I have said. Why asketh thou me? ask them who have heard what I have spoken unto them: behold they know what things I have said. Why do you question me? Question those who heard what it was I said to them: these witnesses here know what I said."
John 18:22But as he said these things, one of the officers who stood by gave a blow on the face to Jesus, saying, Answerest thou the high priest thus? And when he had said these things, one of the servants standing by, gave Jesus a blow, saying: Answerest thou the high priest so?Upon His saying this, one of the officers standing by struck Him with his open hand, asking Him as he did so, "Is that the way you answer the High Priest?"
John 18:23Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why smitest thou me?Jesus answered him: If I have spoken evil, give testimony of the evil; but if well, why strikest thou me?"If I have spoken wrongly," replied Jesus, "bear witness to it as wrong; but if rightly, why that blow?"
John 18:24Annas [then] had sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. And Annas sent him bound to Caiphas the high priest. So Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the High Priest.
John 18:25But Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him, Art thou also of his disciples? He denied, and said, I am not.And Simon Peter was standing, and warming himself. They said therefore to him: Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said: I am not.But Simon Peter remained standing and warming himself, and this led to their asking him, "Are you also one of his disciples?" He denied it, and said, "No, I am not."
John 18:26One of the bondmen of the high priest, who was kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, says, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?One of the servants of the high priest (a kinsman to him whose ear Peter cut off) saith to him: Did I not see thee in the garden with him?One of the High Priest's servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "Did I not see you in the garden with him?"
John 18:27Peter denied therefore again, and immediately [the] cock crew.Again therefore Peter denied; and immediately the cock crew.Once more Peter denied it, and immediately a cock crowed.
John 18:28They lead therefore Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium; and it was early morn. And *they* entered not into the praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but eat the passover. Then they led Jesus from Caiphas to the governor's hall. And it was morning; and they went not into the hall, that they might not be defiled, but that they might eat the pasch. So they brought Jesus from Caiaphas's house to the Praetorium. It was the early morning, and they would not enter the Praetorium themselves for fear of defilement, and in order that they might be able to eat the Passover.
John 18:29Pilate therefore went out to them and said, What accusation do ye bring against this man?Pilate therefore went out to them, and said: What accusation bring you against this man?Accordingly Pilate came out to them and inquired, "What accusation have you to bring against this man?"
John 18:30They answered and said to him, If this [man] were not an evildoer, we should not have delivered him up to thee. They answered, and said to him: If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up to thee."If the man were not a criminal," they replied, "we would not have handed him over to you."
John 18:31Pilate therefore said to them, Take him, ye, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him, It is not permitted to us to put any one to death;Pilate therefore said to them: Take him you, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him: It is not lawful for us to put any man to death;"Take him yourselves," said Pilate, "and judge him by your Law." "We have no power," replied the Jews, "to put any man to death."
John 18:32that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled which he spoke, signifying what death he should die. That the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he said, signifying what death he should die. They said this that the words might be fulfilled in which Jesus predicted the kind of death He was to die.
John 18:33Pilate therefore entered again into the praetorium and called Jesus, and said to him, Thou art the king of the Jews?Pilate therefore went into the hall again, and called Jesus, and said to him: Art thou the king of the Jews?Re-entering the Praetorium, therefore, Pilate called Jesus and asked Him, "Are *you* the King of the Jews?"
John 18:34Jesus answered [him], Dost thou say this of thyself, or have others said it to thee concerning me?Jesus answered: Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or have others told it thee of me?"Do you say this of yourself, or have others told it you about me?" replied Jesus.
John 18:35Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thy nation and the chief priests have delivered thee up to me: what hast thou done?Pilate answered: Am I a Jew? Thy own nation, and the chief priests, have delivered thee up to me: what hast thou done?"Am I a Jew?" exclaimed Pilate; "it is your own nation and the High Priests who have handed you over to me. What have you done?"
John 18:36Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my servants had fought that I might not be delivered up to the Jews; but now my kingdom is not from hence.Jesus answered: My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would certainly strive that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now my kingdom is not from hence."My kingdom," replied Jesus, "does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my subjects would have resolutely fought to save me from being delivered up to the Jews. But, as a matter of fact, my kingdom has not this origin."
John 18:37Pilate therefore said to him, Thou art then a king? Jesus answered, Thou sayest [it], that I am a king. I have been born for this, and for this I have come into the world, that I might bear witness to the truth. Every one that is of the truth hears my voice.Pilate therefore said to him: Art thou a king then? Jesus answered: Thou sayest that I am a king. For this was I born, and for this came I into the world; that I should give testimony to the truth. Every one that is of the truth, heareth my voice."So then *you* are a king!" rejoined Pilate. "Yes," said Jesus, "you say truly that I am a king. For this purpose I was born, and for this purpose I have come into the world to give testimony for the truth. Every one who is a friend of the truth listens to my voice."
John 18:38Pilate says to him, What is truth? And having said this he went out again to the Jews, and says to them, I find no fault whatever in him.Pilate saith to him: What is truth? And when he said this, he went out again to the Jews, and saith to them: I find no cause in him."What is truth?" said Pilate. But no sooner had he spoken the words than he went out again to the Jews and told them, "I find no crime in him.
John 18:39But ye have a custom that I release [some] one to you at the passover; will ye therefore that I release unto you the king of the Jews? But you have a custom that I should release one unto you at the pasch: will you, therefore, that I release unto you the king of the Jews? But you have a custom that I should release one prisoner to you at the Passover. So shall I release to you the King of the Jews?"
John 18:40They cried therefore again all, saying, Not this [man], but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber. Then cried they all again, saying: Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber. With a roar of voices they again cried out, saying, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber.
