Titus 1:1Paul, bondman of God, and apostle of Jesus Christ according to [the] faith of God's elect, and knowledge of [the] truth which [is] according to piety;Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of the elect of God and the acknowledging of the truth, which is according to godliness:Paul, a bondservant of God and an Apostle of Jesus Christ for building up the faith of God's own people and spreading a full knowledge of the truths of religion,
Titus 1:2in [the] hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before the ages of time,Unto the hope of life everlasting, which God, who lieth not, hath promised before the times of the world:in hope of the Life of the Ages which God, who is never false to His word, promised before the commencement of the Ages.
Titus 1:3but has manifested in its own due season his word, in [the] proclamation with which *I* have been entrusted, according to [the] commandment of our Saviour God;But hath in due times manifested his word in preaching, which is committed to me according to the commandment of God our Savior:And at the appointed time He clearly made known His Message in the preaching with which I was entrusted by the command of God our Saviour:
Titus 1:4to Titus, my own child according to [the] faith common [to us]: Grace and peace from God [the] Father, and Christ Jesus our Saviour.To Titus my beloved son, according to the common faith, grace and peace from God the Father, and from Christ Jesus our Savior.To Titus my own true child in our common faith. May grace and peace be granted to you from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Saviour.
Titus 1:5For this cause I left thee in Crete, that thou mightest go on to set right what remained [unordered], and establish elders in each city, as *I* had ordered thee:For this cause I left thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and shouldest ordain priests in every city, as I also appointed thee:I have left you behind in Crete in order that you may set right the things which still require attention, and appoint Elders in every town, as I directed you to do;
Titus 1:6if any one be free from all charge [against him], husband of one wife, having believing children not accused of excess or unruly.If any be without crime, the husband of one wife, having faithful children, not accused of riot, or unruly.wherever there is a man of blameless life, true to his one wife, having children who are themselves believers and are free from every reproach of profligacy or of stubborn self-will.
Titus 1:7For the overseer must be free from all charge [against him] as God's steward; not headstrong, not passionate, not disorderly through wine, not a striker, not seeking gain by base means;For a bishop must be without crime, as the steward of God: not proud, not subject to anger, not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre:For, as God's steward, a minister must be of blameless life, not over-fond of having his own way, not a man of a passionate temper nor a hard drinker, not given to blows nor greedy of gain,
Titus 1:8but hospitable, a lover of goodness, discreet, just, pious, temperate,But given to hospitality, gentle, sober, just, holy, continent:but hospitable to strangers, a lover of goodness, sober-minded, upright, saintly, self-controlled;
Titus 1:9clinging to the faithful word according to the doctrine taught, that he may be able both to encourage with sound teaching and refute gainsayers.Embracing that faithful word which is according to doctrine, that he may be able to exhort in sound doctrine, and to convince the gainsayers.holding fast to the faithful Message which he has received, so that he may be well qualified both to encourage others with sound teaching and to reply successfully to opponents.
Titus 1:10For there are many and disorderly vain speakers and deceivers of people's minds, specially those of [the] circumcision,For there are also many disobedient, vain talkers, and seducers: especially they who are of the circumcision:For there are many that spurn authority idle, talkative and deceitful persons, who, for the most part, are adherents of the Circumcision.
Titus 1:11who must have their mouths stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which ought not [to be taught] for the sake of base gain.Who must be reproved, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.You must stop the mouths of such men, for they overthrow the faith of whole families, teaching what they ought not, just for the sake of making money.
Titus 1:12One of themselves, a prophet of their own, has said, Cretans are always liars, evil wild beasts, lazy gluttons.One of them a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are always liars, evil beasts, slothful bellies.One of their own number a Prophet who is a countryman of theirs has said, "Cretans are always liars, dangerous animals, idle gluttons."
Titus 1:13This testimony is true; for which cause rebuke them severely, that they may be sound in the faith,This testimony is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;This testimony is true. Therefore sternly denounce them, that they may be robust in their faith,
Titus 1:14not turning [their] minds to Jewish fables and commandments of men turning away from the truth.Not giving heed to Jewish fables and commandments of men, who turn themselves away from the truth.and not give attention to Jewish legends and the maxims of men who turn their backs on the truth.
Titus 1:15All things [are] pure to the pure; but to the defiled and unbelieving nothing [is] pure; but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.All things are clean to the clean: but to them that are defiled, and to unbelievers, nothing is clean: but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.To the pure everything is pure; but to the polluted and unbelieving nothing is pure, but on the contrary their very minds and consciences are polluted.
Titus 1:16They profess to know God, but in works deny [him], being abominable, and disobedient, and found worthless as to every good work.They profess that they know God: but in their works they deny him; being abominable, and incredulous, and to every good work reprobate.They profess to know God; but in their actions they disown Him, and are detestable and disobedient men, and for any good work are utterly useless.
