Genesis 16:1 | And Sarai Abram's wife did not bear him [children]. And she had an Egyptian maidservant; and her name was Hagar. | Now Sarai the wife of Abram, had brought forth no children; having a handmaid, an Egyptian, named Agar, | Now Sarai, Abram's wife, bore him no children. She had a handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. |
Genesis 16:2 | And Sarai said to Abram, Behold now, Jehovah has shut me up, that I do not bear. Go in, I pray thee, to my maidservant: it may be that I shall be built up by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai. | She said to her husband: Behold, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing: go in unto my handmaid, it may be I may have children of her at least. And when he agreed to her request, | Sarai said to Abram," See now, Yahweh has restrained me from bearing. Please go in to my handmaid. It may be that I will obtain children by her." Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. |
Genesis 16:3 | And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar, the Egyptian, her maidservant, at the end of ten years that Abram had dwelt in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram, as his wife. | She took Agar the Egyptian her handmaid, ten years after they first dwelt in the land of Chanaan, and gave her to her husband to wife. | Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband to be his wife. |
Genesis 16:4 | And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was lightly esteemed in her eyes. | And he went in to her. But she, perceiving that she was with child, despised her mistress. | He went in to Hagar, and she conceived. When she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes. |
Genesis 16:5 | And Sarai said to Abram, My wrong be on thee! I have given my maidservant into thy bosom; and now she sees that she has conceived, I am lightly esteemed in her eyes. Jehovah judge between me and thee! | And Sarai said to Abram: Thou dost unjustly with me: I gave my handmaid into thy bosom, and she perceiving herself to be with child, despiseth me. The Lord judge between me and thee. | Sarai said to Abram, "This wrong is your fault. I gave my handmaid into your bosom, and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes. Yahweh judge between me and you." |
Genesis 16:6 | And Abram said to Sarai, Behold, thy maidservant is in thy hand: do to her what is good in thine eyes. And Sarai oppressed her; and she fled from her face. | And Abram made answer, and said to her: Behold thy handmaid is in thy own hand, use her its it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai afflicted her, she ran away. | But Abram said to Sarai, "Behold, your maid is in your hand. Do to her whatever is good in your eyes." Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her face. |
Genesis 16:7 | And the Angel of Jehovah found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur. | And the angel of the Lord having found her, by a fountain of water in the wilderness, which is in the way to Sur in the desert, | The angel of Yahweh found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur. |
Genesis 16:8 | And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maidservant, whence comest thou? and whither art thou going? And she said, I am fleeing from the face of my mistress Sarai. | He said to her: Agar, handmaid of Sarai, whence comest thou? and whither goest thou? And she answered: I flee from the face of Sarai, my mistress. | He said, "Hagar, Sarai's handmaid, where did you come from? Where are you going?" She said, "I am fleeing from the face of my mistress Sarai." |
Genesis 16:9 | And the Angel of Jehovah said to her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands. | And the angel of the Lord said to her: Return to thy mistress, and humble thyself under her hand. | The angel of Yahweh said to her, "Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hands." |
Genesis 16:10 | And the Angel of Jehovah said to her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude. | And again he said: I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, and it shall not be numbered for multitude. | The angel of Yahweh said to her, "I will greatly multiply your seed, that they will not be numbered for multitude." |
Genesis 16:11 | And the Angel of Jehovah said to her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael, because Jehovah hath hearkened to thy affliction. | And again: Behold, said he, thou art with child, and thou shalt bring forth a son: and thou shalt call his name Ismael, because the Lord hath heard thy affliction. | The angel of Yahweh said to her, "Behold, you are with child, and will bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, because Yahweh has heard your affliction. |
Genesis 16:12 | And he will be a wild-ass of a man, his hand against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell before the face of all his brethren. | He shall be a wild man: his hand will be against all men, and all men's hands against him: and he shall pitch his tents over against all his brethren. | He will be like a wild donkey among men. His hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him. He will live opposite all of his brothers." |
Genesis 16:13 | And she called the name of Jehovah who spoke to her, Thou art the ùGod who reveals himself, for she said, Also here have I seen after he has revealed himself. | And she called the name of the Lord that spoke unto her: Thou the God who hast seen me. For she said: Verily here have I seen the hinder parts of him that seeth me. | She called the name of Yahweh who spoke to her, "You are a God who sees," for she said, "Have I even stayed alive after seeing him?" |
Genesis 16:14 | Therefore the well was named Beer-lahai-roi: behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered. | Therefore she called that well, The well of him that liveth and seeth me. The same is between Cades and Bared. | Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi. Behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered. |
Genesis 16:15 | And Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. | And Agar brought forth a son to Abram: who called his name Ismael. | Hagar bore a son for Abram. Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. |
Genesis 16:16 | And Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram. | Abram was fourscore and six years old when Agar brought him forth Ismael. | Abram was eighty-six years old, when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram. |
