Ephesians 4:1 | *I*, the prisoner in [the] Lord, exhort you therefore to walk worthy of the calling wherewith ye have been called, | I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, | I then, the prisoner in the Lord, make this request from my heart, that you will see that your behaviour is a credit to the position which God's purpose has given you, |
Ephesians 4:2 | with all lowliness and meekness, with long-suffering, bearing with one another in love; | With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; | With all gentle and quiet behaviour, taking whatever comes, putting up with one another in love; |
Ephesians 4:3 | using diligence to keep the unity of the Spirit in the uniting bond of peace. | Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. | Taking care to keep the harmony of the Spirit in the yoke of peace. |
Ephesians 4:4 | [There is] one body and one Spirit, as ye have been also called in one hope of your calling; | There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; | There is one body and one Spirit, even as you have been marked out by God in the one hope of his purpose for you; |
Ephesians 4:5 | one Lord, one faith, one baptism; | One Lord, one faith, one baptism, | One Lord, one faith, one baptism, |
Ephesians 4:6 | one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in us all. | One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. | One God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in all. |
Ephesians 4:7 | But to each one of us has been given grace according to the measure of the gift of the Christ. | But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. | But to every one of us has grace been given in the measure of the giving of Christ. |
Ephesians 4:8 | Wherefore he says, Having ascended up on high, he has led captivity captive, and has given gifts to men. | Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. | For this reason he says, He went up on high, taking his prisoners with him, and gave freely to men. |
Ephesians 4:9 | But that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended into the lower parts of the earth? | (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? | (Now this, He went up, what is it but that he first went down into the lower parts of the earth? |
Ephesians 4:10 | He that descended is the same who has also ascended up above all the heavens, that he might fill all things; | He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) | He who went down is the same who went up far over all the heavens so that he might make all things complete.) |
Ephesians 4:11 | and *he* has given some apostles, and some prophets, and some evangelists, and some shepherds and teachers, | And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; | And he gave some as Apostles, and some, prophets; and some, preachers of the good news; and some to give care and teaching; |
Ephesians 4:12 | for the perfecting of the saints; with a view to [the] work of [the] ministry, with a view to the edifying of the body of Christ; | For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: | For the training of the saints as servants in the church, for the building up of the body of Christ: |
Ephesians 4:13 | until we all arrive at the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, at [the] full-grown man, at [the] measure of the stature of the fulness of the Christ; | Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: | Till we all come to the harmony of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to full growth, to the full measure of Christ: |
Ephesians 4:14 | in order that we may be no longer babes, tossed and carried about by every wind of *that* teaching [which is] in the sleight of men, in unprincipled cunning with a view to systematized error; | That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; | So that we may be no longer children, sent this way and that, turned about by every wind of teaching, by the twisting and tricks of men, by the deceits of error; |
Ephesians 4:15 | but, holding the truth in love, we may grow up to him in all things, who is the head, the Christ: | But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: | But saying true words in love, may come to full growth in him, who is the head, even Christ; |
Ephesians 4:16 | from whom the whole body, fitted together, and connected by every joint of supply, according to [the] working in [its] measure of each one part, works for itself the increase of the body to its self-building up in love. | From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love. | Through whom all the body, being rightly formed and united together, by the full working of every part, is increased to the building up of itself in love. |
Ephesians 4:17 | This I say therefore, and testify in [the] Lord, that ye should no longer walk as [the rest of] the nations walk in [the] vanity of their mind, | This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, | This I say, then, and give witness in the Lord, that you are to go no longer in the way of the Gentiles whose minds are turned to that which has no profit, |
Ephesians 4:18 | being darkened in understanding, estranged from the life of God by reason of the ignorance which is in them, by reason of the hardness of their hearts, | Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: | Whose thoughts are dark, to whom the life of God is strange because they are without knowledge, and their hearts have been made hard; |
Ephesians 4:19 | who having cast off all feeling, have given themselves up to lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greedy unsatisfied lust. | Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. | Who having no more power of feeling, have given themselves up to evil passions, to do all unclean things with overmuch desire. |
Ephesians 4:20 | But *ye* have not thus learnt the Christ, | But ye have not so learned Christ; | For this was not the teaching of Christ which was given to you; |
Ephesians 4:21 | if ye have heard him and been instructed in him according as [the] truth is in Jesus; | If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: | If in fact you gave ear to him, and were given teaching in him, even as what is true is made clear in Jesus: |
Ephesians 4:22 | [namely] your having put off according to the former conversation the old man which corrupts itself according to the deceitful lusts; | That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; | That you are to put away, in relation to your earlier way of life, the old man, which has become evil by love of deceit; |
Ephesians 4:23 | and being renewed in the spirit of your mind; | And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; | And be made new in the spirit of your mind, |
Ephesians 4:24 | and [your] having put on the new man, which according to God is created in truthful righteousness and holiness. | And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. | And put on the new man, to which God has given life, in righteousness and a true and holy way of living. |
Ephesians 4:25 | Wherefore, having put off falsehood, speak truth every one with his neighbour, because we are members one of another. | Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. | And so, putting away false words, let everyone say what is true to his neighbour: for we are parts one of another. |
Ephesians 4:26 | Be angry, and do not sin; let not the sun set upon your wrath, | Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: | Be angry without doing wrong; let not the sun go down on your wrath; |
Ephesians 4:27 | neither give room for the devil. | Neither give place to the devil. | And do not give way to the Evil One. |
Ephesians 4:28 | Let the stealer steal no more, but rather let him toil, working what is honest with [his] hands, that he may have to distribute to him that has need. | Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. | Let him who was a thief be so no longer, but let him do good work with his hands, so that he may have something to give to him who is in need. |
Ephesians 4:29 | Let no corrupt word go out of your mouth, but if [there be] any good one for needful edification, that it may give grace to those that hear [it]. | Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. | Let no evil talk come out of your mouth, but only what is good for giving necessary teaching, and for grace to those who give ear. |
Ephesians 4:30 | And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which ye have been sealed for [the] day of redemption. | And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. | And do not give grief to the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were marked for the day of salvation. |
Ephesians 4:31 | Let all bitterness, and heat of passion, and wrath, and clamour, and injurious language, be removed from you, with all malice; | Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: | Let all bitter, sharp and angry feeling, and noise, and evil words, be put away from you, with all unkind acts; |
Ephesians 4:32 | and be to one another kind, compassionate, forgiving one another, so as God also in Christ has forgiven you. | And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. | And be kind to one another, full of pity, having forgiveness for one another, even as God in Christ had forgiveness for you. |
