John 9:1 | And as he passed on, he saw a man blind from birth. | And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. | And when he went on his way, he saw a man blind from birth. |
John 9:2 | And his disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi, who sinned, this [man] or his parents, that he should be born blind? | And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? | And his disciples put a question to him, saying, Master, was it because of this man's sin, or the sin of his father and mother, that he has been blind from birth? |
John 9:3 | Jesus answered, Neither has this [man] sinned nor his parents, but that the works of God should be manifested in him. | Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. | Jesus said in answer, It was not because of his sin, or because of his father's or mother's; it was so that the works of God might be seen openly in him. |
John 9:4 | I must work the works of him that has sent me while it is day. [The] night is coming, when no one can work. | I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. | While it is day we have to do the works of him who sent me: the night comes when no work may be done. |
John 9:5 | As long as I am in the world, I am [the] light of the world. | As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. | As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. |
John 9:6 | Having said these things, he spat on the ground and made mud of the spittle, and put the mud, as ointment, on his eyes. | When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, | Having said these words, he put earth, mixed with water from his mouth, on the man's eyes, |
John 9:7 | And he said to him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, which is interpreted, Sent. He went therefore and washed, and came seeing. | And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. | And said to him, Go and make yourself clean in the bath of Siloam (the sense of the name is, Sent). So he went away and, after washing, came back able to see. |
John 9:8 | The neighbours therefore, and those who used to see him before, that he was a beggar, said, Is not this he that was sitting and begging? | The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged? | Then the neighbours and others who had seen him before in the street, with his hand out for money, said, Is not this the man who got money from people? |
John 9:9 | Some said, It is he; others said, No, but he is like him: *he* said, It is I. | Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he. | Some said, It is he: others said, No, but he is like him. He said, I am he. |
John 9:10 | They said therefore to him, How have thine eyes been opened? | Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened? | So they said to him, How then were your eyes made open? |
John 9:11 | He answered [and said], A man called Jesus made mud and anointed mine eyes, and said to me, Go to Siloam and wash: and having gone and washed, I saw. | He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight. | His answer was: The man who is named Jesus put earth mixed with water on my eyes, and said to me, Go and make yourself clean in Siloam: so I went away and, after washing, am now able to see. |
John 9:12 | They said therefore to him, Where is he? He says, I do not know. | Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not. | And they said to him, Where is he? His answer was: I have no knowledge. |
John 9:13 | They bring him who was before blind to the Pharisees. | They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind. | They took him before the Pharisees this man who had been blind. |
John 9:14 | Now it was sabbath when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. | And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes. | Now the day on which the earth was mixed by Jesus and the man's eyes were made open was the Sabbath. |
John 9:15 | The Pharisees therefore also again asked him how he received his sight. And he said to them, He put mud upon mine eyes, and I washed, and I see. | Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see. | So the Pharisees put more questions to him about how his eyes had been made open. And he said to them, He put earth on my eyes, and I had a wash and am able to see. |
John 9:16 | Some of the Pharisees therefore said, This man is not of God, for he does not keep the sabbath. Others said, How can a sinful man perform such signs? And there was a division among them. | Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them. | Then some of the Pharisees said, That man has not come from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath. Others said, How is it possible for a sinner to do such signs? So there was a division among them. |
John 9:17 | They say therefore again to the blind [man], What dost thou say of him, that he has opened thine eyes? And he said, He is a prophet. | They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet. | Again they said to the blind man, What have you to say about him for opening your eyes? And he said, He is a prophet. |
John 9:18 | The Jews therefore did not believe concerning him that he was blind and had received sight, until they had called the parents of him that had received sight. | But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight. | Now the Jews had no belief in the statement that he had been blind and was now able to see, till they sent for the father and mother of the man whose eyes had been made open, |
John 9:19 | And they asked them saying, This is your son, of whom ye say that he was born blind: how then does he now see? | And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see? | And put the question to them, saying, Is this your son, of whom you say that he was blind at birth? how is it then that he is now able to see? |
John 9:20 | His parents answered [them] and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; | His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind: | In answer his father and mother said, We are certain that this is our son and that he was blind at birth: |
John 9:21 | but how he now sees we do not know, or who has opened his eyes we do not know. *He* is of age: ask *him*; *he* will speak concerning himself. | But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself. | But how it is he is now able to see, or who made his eyes open, we are not able to say: put the question to him; he is old enough to give an answer for himself. |
John 9:22 | His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if any one confessed him [to be the] Christ, he should be excommunicated from the synagogue. | These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue. | They said this because of their fear of the Jews: for the Jews had come to an agreement that if any man said that Jesus was the Christ he would be put out of the Synagogue. |
John 9:23 | On this account his parents said, He is of age: ask *him*. | Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him. | That was the reason why they said, He is old enough; put the question to him. |
John 9:24 | They called therefore a second time the man who had been blind, and said to him, Give glory to God: we know that this man is sinful. | Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner. | So they sent a second time for the man who had been blind and they said to him, Give glory to God: it is clear to us that this man is a sinner. |
John 9:25 | He answered therefore, If he is sinful I know not. One thing I know, that, being blind [before], now I see. | He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see. | He said in answer, I have no knowledge if he is a sinner or not, but one thing I am certain about; I was blind, and now I see. |
John 9:26 | And they said to him again, What did he do to thee? how opened he thine eyes? | Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes? | Then they said to him, What did he do to you? how did he give you the use of your eyes? |
John 9:27 | He answered them, I told you already and ye did not hear: why do ye desire to hear again? do ye also wish to become his disciples? | He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples? | His answer was: I have said it before, but your ears were shut: why would you have me say it again? is it your desire to become his disciples? |
John 9:28 | They railed at him, and said, Thou art his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. | Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples. | And they were angry with him and said, You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. |
John 9:29 | We know that God spoke to Moses; but [as to] this [man], we know not whence he is. | We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is. | We are certain that God gave his word to Moses: but as for this man, we have no knowledge where he comes from. |
John 9:30 | The man answered and said to them, Now in this is a wonderful thing, that *ye* do not know whence he is, and he has opened mine eyes. | The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes. | The man said in answer, Why, here is a strange thing! You have no knowledge where he comes from though he gave me the use of my eyes. |
John 9:31 | [But] we know that God does not hear sinners; but if any one be God-fearing and do his will, him he hears. | Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth. | We have knowledge that God does not give ear to sinners, but if any man is a worshipper of God and does his pleasure, to him God's ears are open. |
John 9:32 | Since time was, it has not been heard that any one opened the eyes of one born blind. | Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind. | In all the years nobody has ever before seen the eyes of a man blind from birth made open. |
John 9:33 | If this [man] were not of God he would be able to do nothing. | If this man were not of God, he could do nothing. | If this man did not come from God he would be unable to do anything. |
John 9:34 | They answered and said to him, Thou hast been wholly born in sins, and thou teachest us? And they cast him out. | They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out. | Their answer was: You came to birth through sin; do you make yourself our teacher? And they put him out of the Synagogue. |
John 9:35 | Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him, he said to him, Thou, dost thou believe on the Son of God? | Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? | It came to the ears of Jesus that they had put him out, and meeting him he said, Have you faith in the Son of man? |
John 9:36 | He answered and said, And who is he, Lord, that I may believe on him? | He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? | He said in answer, And who is he, Lord? Say, so that I may have faith in him. |
John 9:37 | And Jesus said to him, Thou hast both seen him, and he that speaks with thee is he. | And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee. | Jesus said to him, You have seen him; it is he who is talking to you. |
John 9:38 | And he said, I believe, Lord: and he did him homage. | And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him. | And he said, Lord, I have faith. And he gave him worship. |
John 9:39 | And Jesus said, For judgment am I come into this world, that they which see not may see, and they which see may become blind. | And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind. | And Jesus said, I came into this world to be a judge, so that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind. |
John 9:40 | And [some] of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and they said to him, Are we blind also? | And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also? | These words came to the ears of the Pharisees who were with him and they said to him, Are we, then, blind? |
John 9:41 | Jesus said to them, If ye were blind ye would not have sin; but now ye say, We see, your sin remains. | Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth. | Jesus said to them, If you were blind you would have no sin: but now that you say, We see; your sin is there still. |
