Luke 20:1 | And it came to pass on one of the days, as he was teaching the people in the temple, and announcing the glad tidings, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up, | And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders, | And it came about on one of those days, when he was teaching the people in the Temple and preaching the good news, |
Luke 20:2 | and spoke to him saying, Tell us by what authority thou doest these things, or who is it who has given thee this authority? | And spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority? | That the chief priests and the scribes and the rulers of the people came to him and said, Make clear to us by what authority you do these things and who gave you this authority. |
Luke 20:3 | And he answering said to them, *I* also will ask you [one] thing, and tell me: | And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me: | And in answer he said to them, I will put a question to you, and do you give me an answer: |
Luke 20:4 | The baptism of John, was it of heaven or of men? | The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? | The baptism of John, was it from heaven or of men? |
Luke 20:5 | And they reasoned among themselves, saying, If we should say, Of heaven, he will say, Why have ye not believed him? | And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not? | And they said among themselves, If we say, From heaven; he will say, Why did you not have faith in him? |
Luke 20:6 | but if we should say, Of men, the whole people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet. | But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet. | But if we say, Of men; we will be stoned by the people, for they are certain that John was a prophet. |
Luke 20:7 | And they answered, they did not know whence. | And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was. | And they made answer that they had no idea where it came from. |
Luke 20:8 | And Jesus said to them, Neither do *I* tell you by what authority I do these things. | And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things. | And Jesus said, And I will not make clear to you by what authority I do these things. |
Luke 20:9 | And he began to speak to the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard and let it out to husbandmen, and left the country for a long time. | Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time. | And he gave the people this story: A man made a vine-garden and gave the use of it to some field-workers and went into another country for a long time. |
Luke 20:10 | And in the season he sent to the husbandmen a bondman, that they might give to him of the fruit of the vineyard; but the husbandmen, having beaten him, sent [him] away empty. | And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty. | And at the right time he sent a servant to the workers to get part of the fruit from the vines; but the workmen gave him blows and sent him away with nothing. |
Luke 20:11 | And again he sent another bondman; but they, having beaten him also, and cast insult upon him, sent [him] away empty. | And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty. | And he sent another servant, and they gave blows to him in the same way, and put shame on him, and sent him away with nothing. |
Luke 20:12 | And again he sent a third; and they, having wounded him also, cast [him] out. | And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out. | And he sent a third, and they gave him wounds and put him out. |
Luke 20:13 | And the lord of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: perhaps when they see him they will respect [him]. | Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him. | And the lord of the garden said, What am I to do? I will send my dearly loved son; they may give respect to him. |
Luke 20:14 | But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir; [come,] let us kill him, that the inheritance may become ours. | But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. | But when the workmen saw him, they said to one another, This is he who will one day be the owner of the property: let us put him to death and the heritage will be ours. |
Luke 20:15 | And having cast him forth out of the vineyard, they killed [him]. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do to them? | So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them? | And driving him out of the garden they put him to death. Now what will the lord do to these workmen? |
Luke 20:16 | He will come and destroy those husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it they said, May it never be! | He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid. | He will come and put them to destruction and give the garden to others. And when he said this, they said, May it not be so. |
Luke 20:17 | But he looking at them said, What then is this that is written, The stone which they that builded rejected, this has become the corner-stone? | And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? | But he, looking on them, said, Is it not in the Writings, The stone which the builders put on one side, the same has become the chief stone of the building? |
Luke 20:18 | Every one falling on this stone shall be broken, but on whomsoever it shall fall, it shall grind him to powder. | Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. | Everyone falling on that stone will be broken, but the man on whom the stone comes down will be crushed to dust. |
Luke 20:19 | And the chief priests and the scribes sought the same hour to lay hands on him, and they feared the people; for they knew that he had spoken this parable of them. | And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them. | And the chief priests and the scribes made attempts to get their hands on him in that very hour; and they were in fear of the people, for they saw that he had made up this story against them. |
Luke 20:20 | And having watched [him], they sent out suborned persons, pretending to be just men, that they might take hold of him in [his] language, so that they might deliver him up to the power and authority of the governor. | And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor. | And they kept watch on him, and sent out secret representatives, who were acting the part of good men, in order that they might get something from his words, on account of which they might give him up to the government and into the power of the ruler. |
Luke 20:21 | And they asked him saying, Teacher, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, and acceptest no [man's] person, but teachest with truth the way of God: | And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly: | And they put a question to him, saying, Master, we are certain that your teaching and your words are right, and that you have no respect for a man's position, but you are teaching the true way of God: |
Luke 20:22 | Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not? | Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no? | Is it right for us to make payment of taxes to Caesar or not? |
Luke 20:23 | But perceiving their deceit he said to them, Why do ye tempt me? | But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me? | But he saw through their trick and said to them, |
Luke 20:24 | Shew me a denarius. Whose image and superscription has it? And answering they said, Caesar's. | Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Caesar's. | Let me see a penny. Whose image and name are on it? And they said, Caesar's. |
Luke 20:25 | And he said to them, Pay therefore what is Caesar's to Caesar, and what is God's to God. | And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's. | And he said, Then give to Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and to God the things which are God's. |
Luke 20:26 | And they were not able to take hold of him in [his] expressions before the people, and, wondering at his answer, they were silent. | And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace. | And they were not able to get anything from these words before the people: but they were full of wonder at his answer, and said nothing. |
Luke 20:27 | And some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is any resurrection, coming up [to him], | Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him, | And some of the Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no coming back from the dead; and they said to him, |
Luke 20:28 | demanded of him saying, Teacher, Moses wrote to us, If any one's brother, who has a wife, die, and he die childless, his brother shall take the wife and raise up seed to his brother. | Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. | Master, Moses said that if a man's brother comes to his end, having a wife, but no children, his brother is to take the wife, and get a family for his brother. |
Luke 20:29 | There were then seven brethren: and the first, having taken a wife, died childless; | There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children. | Now there were seven brothers, and the first had a wife and came to his end, having no children; |
Luke 20:30 | and the second [took the woman, and *he* died childless]; | And the second took her to wife, and he died childless. | And the second; |
Luke 20:31 | and the third took her: and in like manner also the seven left no children and died; | And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died. | And the third took her; and in the same way, all the seven, without having any children, came to their end. |
Luke 20:32 | and last of all the woman also died. | Last of all the woman died also. | And last of all, the woman came to her end. |
Luke 20:33 | In the resurrection therefore of which of them does she become wife, for the seven had her as wife? | Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife. | When they come back from the dead, whose wife will she be? for all the seven had her. |
Luke 20:34 | And Jesus said to them, The sons of this world marry and are given in marriage, | And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage: | And Jesus said to them, The sons of this world are married and have wives; |
Luke 20:35 | but they who are counted worthy to have part in that world, and the resurrection from among [the] dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; | But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: | But those to whom is given the reward of the world to come, and to come back from the dead, have no wives, and are not married; |
Luke 20:36 | for neither can they die any more, for they are equal to angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. | Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection. | And death has no more power over them, for they are equal to the angels, and are sons of God, being of those who will come back from the dead. |
Luke 20:37 | But that the dead rise, even Moses shewed in [the section of] the bush, when he called [the] Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob; | Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. | But even Moses made it clear that the dead come back to life, saying, in the story of the burning thorn-tree, The Lord, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. |
Luke 20:38 | but he is not God of [the] dead but of [the] living; for all live for him. | For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him. | Now he is not the God of the dead but of the living: for all men are living to him. |
Luke 20:39 | And some of the scribes answering said, Teacher, thou hast well spoken. | Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said. | And some of the scribes, in answer to this, said, Master, you have said well. |
Luke 20:40 | For they did not dare any more to ask him anything. | And after that they durst not ask him any question at all. | And they had fear of putting any more questions to him. |
Luke 20:41 | And he said to them, How do they say that the Christ is David's son, | And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David's son? | And he said to them, Why do they say that the Christ is the son of David? |
Luke 20:42 | and David himself says in the book of Psalms, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand | And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, | For David himself says in the book of Psalms, The Lord said to my Lord, Take your seat at my right hand, |
Luke 20:43 | until I put thine enemies [as] footstool of thy feet? | Till I make thine enemies thy footstool. | Till I put under your feet all those who are against you. |
Luke 20:44 | David therefore calls him Lord, and how is he his son? | David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son? | David then gives him the name of Lord, so how is it possible for him to be his son? |
Luke 20:45 | And, as all the people were listening, he said to his disciples, | Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples, | And in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples, |
Luke 20:46 | Beware of the scribes, who like to walk about in long robes, and who love salutations in the market-places, and first seats in the synagogues, and first places at suppers; | Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts; | Keep away from the scribes, whose pleasure it is to go about in long robes, and to have words of respect said to them in the market-places, and to take the chief seats in the Synagogues and the first places at feasts; |
Luke 20:47 | who devour the houses of widows, and as a pretext make long prayers. These shall receive a severer judgment. | Which devour widows' houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation. | Who take the property of widows and before the eyes of men make long prayers; they will get a greater punishment. |
